As if Pixy Misa gives a tuppenny fuck about us mobile users. This is the least mobile friendly site that's still active on the internet. He can't even be bothered to fix a bad URL to the style sheet that kind of works but kind of doesn't because some browsers can correctly guess the real link but others follow the literal broken link to the CSS and it fails. Why would he bother to fix the CSS to have fixed margins or other faggy shit like that?
But don't mind us, we find a way to make it work. Pixy has more important work, like rehashing HN and Slashdot at 4 AM in the US. Posted by: Dworkin Barimen at December 21, 2024 10:59 PM (RGt60) 110

Navy shoots down its own F/A-18 in Red Sea fight
https://t.co/OJqhrpDMF2 The USS Gettysburg “mistakenly fired on” the F/A-18, CENTCOM said. The shoot down happened amid a weekend of military action against the Houthis, a militant Yemeni nationalist group that controls much of Yemen, including the capital. American and British aircraft have been bombing targets in Sana’a. The incident is under investigation. On Saturday, Dec. 21, CENTCOM said that U.S. forces had shot down several one-way attack drones and an anti-ship cruise missile fired from Yemen over the Red Sea; it’s unclear if the back-and-forth strikes were ongoing when the Navy jet was shot down. Dude on the end "drops" his catch and it rolls away between the two lines of jugglers. He jogs through the lines, barely avoiding getting beaned by the tossed pins, picks up his "dropped" pin, and returns to his spot, again barely avoiding getting beaned. I am honored to see a still from my only foray into the field of children's entertainment atop this evening's ONT. "It's an Abomination from the Cruel Void of Outer Space, Young Charlie Brown, as Your Foretaste of the Abyss" was widely successful in Deutschland, but somehow did not test well in America markets. Perhaps it was not colorful enough? Werner does not know. Charles Schulz sent me a video in which he screams for three minutes, before being forcibly restrained from committing seppuku. If Werner is being honest, I have had much worse reactions to my works.

Malzberg and Resnick were two victims of proto#woke in SF. They had the temerity to talk of "lady writers".
I don't know of Malzberg's fiction; I didn't ever read much of it, but there's this - Wiki: Malzberg uses metafiction techniques to subject the heroic conventions and literary limitations of space opera to biting satire. Seems like his career was devoted to taking away from SF's hope and wonder, and from its appeal. Driving away boys left Malzberg vulnerable to mean girls, and the mean girls did what they do. Posted by: nurse ratched, garbage at December 21, 2024 11:31 PM (kIzwW) Pooky has a service dog named JT (after Justin Thomas, the golfer who sponsored him). He's had him for two years now, and talked to my sister beforehand, and was reassured that as long as he kept his distance, he'd be fine. Well, my sister's crippling asthma/allergies got triggered the first time she met JT and we've been trying to mitigate ever since. Meanwhile, my 13-year-old niece decided (consciously or subconsciously, I'm not sure) that she was terrified of dogs and therefore my brother's family refuses to be in the same room as the dog (my brother has allergies as well, but much milder than my sister). So now we take "shifts" at my parents and my older brother and sister have never seen my son (I helped raise their kids). My only consolation in my niece's cynophobia is that it's not limited to JT, the friendliest dog you've ever met who doesn't understand the concept of aggression; but it also extends to her best friend's elderly and blind dog as well as her aunt on the other side's friendly Shih Tzu. DEI is working very well in the Military....
USS Gay Pride and Captain Stuebing had no comment on the incident. President Biden was awakened, but only asked where is the Red Sea ?, and that someone needs to change my depends... The Binder also referred reporters to the Three Stooges for further comments on the incident.. Nyuk... Nyuk...... Nyuk.. Two U.S. Navy pilots were shot down Sunday over the Red Sea in an apparent “friendly fire” incident, the U.S military said, marking the most serious incident to threaten troops in over a year of America targeting Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Both pilots were recovered alive, with one suffering minor injuries, but the incident underlines just how dangerous the Red Sea corridor has become over the ongoing attacks on shipping by the Iranian-backed Houthis despite U.S. and European military coalitions patrolling the area. In WWII, we could afford for subs like the Barb, with an aggressive Captain and crew, to accomplish such audacious acts.
But today's "Fast Attack" boats have nothing in common with the WWII Fleet Boat, other than both carry some torpedoes. Fact is, our Sub Fleet is wholly unsuited to the sinking of millions of tons of enemy shipping. Fast Attacks are used for the hunting of enemy missile subs, and little else. We need a class of subs, dedicated to WWII type denial of shipping missions, and otherwise choking-off seaborne commerce to belligerent nations. Cheaper than Fast Attacks, maybe even.... affordable losses, in time of war. The U.S. lost over 50 subs in WWII action. And shrugged off the losses. Lose FIVE subs today, and the effects may be shattering. And that ain't wise, or good. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 22, 2024 12:39 AM (Xo+UM) 241
AOP, there were some similar missions. US subs were quite active in supplying/supporting the Philippines guerrillas against the Japanese up until liberation. A sub also was key to the amazingly daring and risky operation that got Gen. Mark Clark ashore in North Africa to discuss non-resistance options with Vichy French brass prior to Operation Torch. And I believe both British and US subs did support sabotage and intel teams in the Med.

I am not so sure that there will ever be another large war using conventional weapons between major powers...too much risk of it going nuclear if one side or the other starts losing badly. You don't think Hitler or the Imperial Japanese would have started tossing nukes in 45 if they had them? But yeah, the trend towards small numbers of extremely advanced and expensive ships, planes, even tanks would tend to discourage much action, kind of like how the big British and German fleets were very leery to go at it in WW1..you could lose the war in an afternoon

Posted by: pookysgirl broke the mold then danced on its ashes at December 22, 2024 12:35 AM (r6qde) Well, yes. Hex begs for it every time I open the freezer door. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 22, 2024 12:43 AM (8zz6B) Anytime. Fairly common knowledge for some warbird buffs here. The article mentions Curdes unknowingly shot down a nurse that day that he had dated a couple days previous and they got married later but I don't know for certain if that's true. As far as sinking enemy shipping goes, maybe subs are not needed for that. Satellites see everything on the surface of the ocean. Identify an enemy container ship or tanker, and some surface ship a thousand miles away launches a sea-to-sea missile.

Posted by: azjaeger at December 22, 2024 12:46 AM (3/XaG) New-fangled drone warfare. Tanks are sitting ducks. Look at what's happening coast-to-coast with drones of unknown origin but aren't a threat. My fear are coordinated drone attacks across the country on inauguration day. Our infrastructure is vulnerable. And that's not telling tales out of school. Posted by: RickZ at December 22, 2024 12:54 AM (gKDq2) 255
Been reading about the F-18 sootdown. Is it possible it was a maintenance fuckup and the ground crew didn't update the crypto keys in the IFF transponder?

Seems to me there's some website that will "preview" any shortened URL to let you know where it links.
Do I have that bookmarked? Of course not. DDGing on "preview shortened url" expandurl.net techspot.com checkshorturl.com dynadot.com getlinkinfo.com Just the top search results. Many decades ago, I'd drive to Tulsa to do my laundry and visit the bar next door. High trust society days. Never worried about someone running off with my underwear.
The bar served frozen margaritas before the BYOB liquor laws were changed, but got away with it. Somehow. Probably because it was near the college. Posted by: mindful webworker - they had good nachos too at December 22, 2024 01:01 AM (Wr8x8) 259

Rain? In the Pacific Northwest?
CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL! Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at December 22, 2024 01:02 AM (JkO4W) I know! But we normally get a pretty steady medium rain, not HARD rain. It seems to be tapering off a bit. mikeski if you're ever in San Diego there is a monument (actually individual small monuments for each boat) to the lost subs of WWII at the former Naval Training Center, now called Liberty Station in its decommissioned/repurposed incarnation. Worth seeing the place anyway, but the memorial is interesting.
