Top Story

  • Oh yeah, don't use SMS for two-factor authentication either. (Gizmodo)

It was never ideal since your phone number could get SIM-swapped without you knowing, but now that the entire phone network has been hacked it's not very useful at all.

  • Microsoft promises meanwhile to keep nagging you to use passkeys rather than passwords online. (The Register)

A passkey lets you log in to a website without the tedious logging in part, so long as you have already logged in to your device. This is actually fairly secure because the passkey consists of two parts - you have one part and the website has the other - and nobody can steal your password from the website and hack your account because effectively they only have half the password.

But if they hack your laptop, you're hosed. Though that is true regardless.

Don't use SMS: Which makes me despise (even more) the businesses that don't give you a choice and force SMS 2FA on you.

Microsoft promises to ... NO! *slap* Stop "helping" me, Microsoft! (Or I shall go straight to your major databanks with a very large axe and give you a reprogramming you will never forget. Capisco? Okay... Get the axe.)

Chemosphere de-indexed: And you have to wonder how many other journals are exactly like them, and how many "researchers" that were publishing to various journals were publishing unverifiable crap just to keep the grant money flowing. Most of them. It's probably most of them. But... "Trust The Science!"

Nintendo... Too litigious and frothing-at-the-mouth zealous about protecting their trademarks (to the point they shut down fan bases of games all the time.) Dog in the manger. Ignore them and their offerings.

Amazon Haul / Temu / Shein / etc, ad nauseum: Caveat Emptor. Also: A fool and his money are soon parted.

32 @12/Ciampino: "Hi Oregon, we have a problem."

They may also just be overly aggressive about applying sex offender charges and pursuing them to conviction for things like "That guy was taking a piss outside, he exposed himself to... those bushes over there!" (And yes, this can and does result in people being put on various states' sex offender lists, which is ridiculous, so of course it happens. A lot.)

Posted by: AltonJackson at December 20, 2024 05:11 AM (tljrc)

45 @43/Close The Fed:

a) It's new tech. We don't know how strong (or weak) the implementation of this security method really is. Let other people be the canaries in the mine. Wait.

b) It's Microsoft pushing it, hard. Definitely wait.

c) Passwords (something you know in your mind) are protected by the Fourth Amendment. Passkeys are a "thing" that can be disclosed against your will by search warrant or otherwise. Choose wisely.

Is your bank account hosed? Probably not. Use a very strong password.

One free tool I can recommend if you want to stick with good old fashioned passwords is Proton's password generator, which generates very strong passwords:

Click on "Resources and Support" at the top, and select "Password Generator"

84 @71/eleven: My own experience with Realtek audio drivers is that they are... fragile. Some versions work, some don't. When you find one that works, it's best to leave it alone. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!)

Unfortunately, Microsoft in Windows 10 or 11 forces updates to drivers that are working and replaces them with new ones, and sometimes you get a dud.

Again, we're back to "Stop 'helping' me, Microsoft!"

In the ACW, there was a young Union officer who participated in the expedition going up the Yazoo to find a way around Vicksburg. As they progressed up the river, the Confederates cut down giant cypress trees behind them to block the way back. When they finally gave up and turned around, they were forced to deal with the obstacles. After they got back, the young man wrote home that he no longer wondered how the pyramids got built - put enough men on a rope, and you can move anything.

They've been considered kiddie because of their censorship policies. It was heavy-handed, but considering the government of the time and the moral crusaders (see Tipper Gore for an abject example, and Jello Biafra's condemnation of her).

More importantly - with all the emulation that goes on, whose games do people download first? And the piracy isn't recent - Nintendo had to deal with piracy and counterfeiting, people literally stealing their work and selling it (physically, even) for several decades now.

Trump's major concern appears to be the debt ceiling. He wants that resolved prior to the inauguration. I assume he's fine with funding the government at, essentially, currently levels in order to get the debt ceiling increase.

I also understand Chip Roy's point. They promise and promise and promise and then they go to DC and do other.

It's a tough mess. We won't get there in one go but we won't get there at all if we never start. I assume the 38 are concerned that DOGE will end up being another empty promise.

The size of the bill was 10%. I don't believe the amount of money spent was all that different. The new bill just didn't include the changes to law like shielding all members of Congress from prosecution, or investigation, for any crime ever.

I believe that is the complaint by the people who voted no. It makes no attempt to spend less.

Or they've hacked everything but the 2FA and you're dumb enough to authorize it or ignore it when you get it unprompted.

Looks like the Democrats now have their genius political response to Trump lined up:

Just refuse every single thing that Trump wants or requires as President.

And they're disciplined enough to get at least 38 Republican'ts to vote with them. So, there's the genius GOPe response.

Are single issue bills the answer? Maybe. Those would be hard to propagandize against.

But, the Retard Strength Voting Block of Dims and Republican'ts is tough to budge.

I hope there's an easy Constitutional way around it.
