Are you tinkering, reading, and otherwise enjoying surprises in your stocking or under your tree? As much as those things might be appreciated, we all know the true meaning of the season. Christmas and Hanukkah are not about stuff. They are really all about the ONT. Here we go... Do not miss the mystery clicks. They are what I got you for Christmas but they were on sale, so I cannot return them.Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking? Come out and play. Thanks much to the Horde for playing along with the ONT reindeer games and an AoS HQ hat tip to the COBs and contributors for the help and support throughout the year. This is a special place. No, I will not be issuing pardons for barrel violations. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Merry Christmas night, all! The "Once In Royal David's City" I saw in the hymn book at Linda's church this morning, but I didn't have time to peruse the lyrics, and the singer didn't perform it.
Today has been Clint Day on Grit. Pale Rider is on now. I'm going to head off to bed in about half an hour, though; planning to work out tomorrow, then try one of the new tobaccos Linda got me for Xmas. We had our ham and stuffing, some turtle cheesecake for dessert, and gave bits of ham to the cats. Stirling inhaled his; not sure if Dagny showed any interest, which means he inhaled hers too. I hope everybody had a good Christmas Eve and Day! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 25, 2024 10:11 PM (omVj0) 19

Werner returns briefly from hiding from Krampus to bid all a Merry Christmas. I left out a note announcing that I was to be found at Michael Moore's house, so hopefully it's his problem now. Also, many thanks, TRex - that first musical selection really hit Werner in the feels. Suddenly it seems a trifle dusty around here, as obviously Werner would not weep. Ja, I don't believe me either. In any event, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

I just went downstairs for more beer and heard water running.
The cats staying with us turn on the water faucet in the bathroom next to the laundry room. The faucet releases water onto a downward, open, cascade when you lift the handle up. I'm trying to remember to close the door there at night. The water's not going full blast. But still. Water! I thought it was Snowflake who has a ton of playful energy. I looked in the bathroom the other day and Snowflake was on the ground looking up at Trumpy on the counter amazed at the falling water. Very cute. Not my cats, but cute. It is a religious obligation for the menorah to be in the window because one purpose of lighting it is to shine a light in the dark. Posted by: San Franpsycho
As usual, America found its own way to these traditions: "During the American Revolutionary War, whenever a soldier went to war, the family he left behind would light a candle in the window every night he was gone. As usual, America found its own way to these traditions: "During the American Revolutionary War, whenever a soldier went to war, the family he left behind would light a candle in the window every night he was gone. The candle remained burning until he returned. Many families, who lost their loved ones to the war, continued to light the candle in the window in remembrance of the soldier who would never be coming back home." This tradition became part of the American Civil War.

Filled with bearer bonds and love, where dreams don't die hard Maybe there's a tower, somewhere up above Filled with shoulder pads and love, where dreams can fly hard Posted by Victor Tango Kilo Werner is not too proud to admit that he spent part of the early Nineties trying to work up a version of "Die Hard" that took place in a dirigible, or at least some version of a rigid airship, like a zeppelin. Klaus Kinski would, of course, be the villain, going up against the one of the most manic, impulsive, and irreverent performers ever, Max von Sydow. I know, it writes itself. Creative differences and relative supplies of helium vs. hydrogen really brought things to a halt, and by the end I was pitching Herve Villechaize on a box kite. It was, alas, not to be. Also, Werner realizes in retrospect that he may have confused Max von Sydow and Michael Madsen. Posted by: Werner Herzog Has Opinions at December 25, 2024 11:18 PM (G6LTi) 168

DD#1, DD#3, and their families were all here with us for Christmas. Tomorrow we all head out in different directions. We had a wonderful time with everyone, although my reading of "The Littlest Angel" went over like a lead balloon. DD#1 couldn't understand why I got so teary-eyed at the end of the story. I can't really explain it; it is just so beautifully written, and the copy that I have has such lovely illustrations. Oh, well.
Got a big hug from DD#3's husband when we were saying goodbye (they are leaving very early in the morning) - I asked him to take care of her for me, and he said, "Always". Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah.
Maison JTB was quiet and peaceful. Walks with Precious the Bichon, a great meal, reading about Christmas past, and listening to Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas album. For dessert I found beautiful renditions of two of the most beautiful carols ever: Wexford Carol and the Coventry Carol. We got a video of our great nephews, ages 5 and 2, in their Christmas Jeep. They managed to dent a wall in the house in the first minute. Judging by the giggles of the 2 year old, he's ready for demolition derby. Posted by: JTB at December 25, 2024 11:46 PM (yTvNw) 204

I think one reason "Once in Royal David's City" doesn't make the rotation too often is that the harmony is kind of difficult. Have you ever heard it sung in more than one part?
60 Do you have a favorite that rarely makes the rotation? Several, 'Bring A Torch, Jeanette Isabella', and 'Good King Wenceslas', among others, 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen', 'The Holly and the Ivy'. Nice choices. "Good King Wenceslas" always reminds me of the miserable experience of the father of a friend who was in the hospital before the days of patient control over TV, etc. The sound system was stuck on a repeat of this song all night. The Irish Rovers do a good version. Posted by: KT at December 26, 2024 12:19 AM (xekrU) 224

>173 I'm not familiar with either of the hand gestures in the Hornet video. It looks like the splattered hand against the canopy is denoting a hard echelon turn, maybe?
The Navy and USMC may do things differently. To me that would have been "Push button 5," change the UHF channel to the pre-loaded frequency 5. It's difficult to tell in the video but it might also have been "Take 5-second spacing," which would explain the turn away from the wingman. IIRC for us that was a twirl followed by the 5 sign. TRex, the music at the opening mystery click is great.
I am just getting around to the day's posts, and the Joe Mannix non-rant includes a version of Silent Night that comes with a backstory from the program notes. This version was also used in a short Kevin Sorbo Christmas video. "In 2003, Pete and Judy Duelo of Minneapolis lost their son Nick in a tragic car accident. Nick was a senior at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and had been an enthusiastic participant in the choral program there, so his family decided to honor his memory by commissioning a new arrangement of a choral piece. Mack Wilberg was chosen for the commission, and his crystalline arrangement of “Silent Night” was premiered at the 2006 “Christmas at Luther” concert. The shimmering orchestration and hushed choral writing touched the audience deeply during the candle-lit performance. . . . As the Duelos had hoped, this beautiful arrangement of “Silent Night” will now continue to reach and touch millions around the world.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Krj_9gOdy8k Posted by: KT at December 26, 2024 12:27 AM (xekrU) 228

Bers, that's sad. But, at 90? Totally understandable.
Hubs is only 70. We're *not* sitting on 100s of K, and he will likely need nursing home if he doesn't pull out of this. I just can't do it all anymore. Medicaid spend-down on this POS house, I guess. Hope I can make it livable, because it'll be where I die. Posted by: JQ at December 26, 2024 02:51 AM (YoCnN) 278
And you know how everyone that isn't there with you every hour has an opinion.
Fuck them...tired. Posted by: Stateless ---------- Amen! When hubs was discharged from hospital a week or so ago-- the nurse said I should "get some help" Oh, really?!?! No sh1t! But she didn't hand me a list of names & numbers. Fk'n useless. Posted by: JQ at December 26, 2024 02:58 AM (YoCnN) 279

The man I was with previously, died a couple years before I met hubby. That's why I say-- this ain't my first rodeo-- and the only thing I would change, would be that these wonderful men would both be alive & healthy, even if it meant that I'd never get to be with them.

Oh, JQ and Stateless. It's hard to hear your stories without bringing back the memories of taking care of mom.
You are both in my prayers . Perseverance and strength. You are doing the right thing, and it won't be for forever. ( even if it feels that way) Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 26, 2024 03:11 AM (1feMt) 286
JQ -
Does the hospital have a social worker or patient advocate? {They would have names and numbers more readily available than a nurse.} Also HHS, Adult division as your hubby is over 65. In AZ, they actually had a pamphlet with names, numbers, and services. Some services worked better than others, as with most things. Agree with you about levels of help. Take the personal care help if you can. That was most difficult for my son and I. But at least mom was small in stature so sort of easy to maneuver

It may not help now, Stateless and JQ, and I know this because I heard it and felt the way you are feeling. But you know in your heart that what you are doing is the right thing for your loved one. You're doing your best for them.
It's not forever even if it feels that way. Take your "good moments" to heart, and hang on to that to get you through the really sucky days and nights. You've got this. * and there's ALWAYS this place to come to vent! Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 26, 2024 03:37 AM (1feMt) 302

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at December 26, 2024 03:37 AM (1feMt) My father was 90 when he died. We had walks where we talked about my goals while taking care of him and Mom. He told me how lucky they were that I was there to take care of them. He had a stroke while we were at the produce store. I literally watched the progression. I went to see him once in the hospital. He wasn't going to get better. I thanked him for everything, told him I loved him and I'd take care of Mom. So he could rest. My brother spent the last tortuous hours with Dad. It was horrible for him. But Dad and I had no unexpressed thoughts. We were good. 3:50. Mom just up. Trumpy in her room with the doga. Caregiver... It's no fun to be sick in a medical rehab for Christmas in the Peoples Republic. Conditions horrible, these for profit health facilities are nightmarish and hire the banana boat people from Haiti rather than real Americans. I miss real fruit. What is this thing called an orange or grapefruit? I haven't seen one. Just disgusting.
