THE MORNING RANT: EV Fire in Parking Garage Causes Terrifying Nighttime Rescues at a Chattanooga, TN Apartment Building

Kia EV Fire - Chattanooga.JPG

As cool as the “new urban” lifestyle sounds, with dining and entertainment options within blocks of your condo/loft, there have always been negatives. These include the hassle factor of multi-story apartment living, shared walls, street noise, etc. There’s now a new negative – the risk of a runaway thermal fire in the parking garage underneath the building you live in.

Some residents of an apartment building in a hip Chattanooga neighborhood had a terrifying night recently when an electric vehicle parked in the building’s garage spontaneously erupted in flames during the wee hours of the night.

“Electric vehicle started major apartment fire in Chattanooga” [WTVC – 12/17/2024]

Five people were hospitalized.

Per the Chattanooga Fire Department, “Residents were giving important information to the police, and officers were relaying those details to the crews conducting searches and making rescues. You can also see and hear the compassion the first responders have on the scene as they help people fleeing their smoke-filled homes in the middle of the night.

Hook and ladder units had to be employed by the fire department to rescue some residents.

Heavy smoke made its way into the building where some residents needed assistance to escape. Some residents had to evacuate by climbing down an aerial ladder from multiple stories up. Residents expressed their gratitude for the firefighters response.

Hook and Ladder - EV Fire - Chattanooga.JPG

Obviously, the fire department’s primary concern was rescuing residents before they succumbed to the smoke that had engulfed the building. But there was also a raging inferno down below in the garage, as the burning EV began to ignite adjacent vehicles.

"There were multiple vehicles on fire," said Lindsey Rogers with the Chattanooga Fire Department. "The smoke from the vehicle fires made its way throughout the building, so we had half of our crews in the sub-level garage working to extinguish those car fires. We had the other half of our crews working to do multiple rescues."

The electric vehicle that started the fire was determined to be a Kia EV. Following the awful night that the residents endured, almost all of them soon learned that their cars had been damaged too.

Two other vehicles next to the EV burned, and most of the cars in the garage suffered heat damage, in the early morning hours of November 22nd. Fire officials identified the car that caught fire as a Kia.

The greatest peril in a multi-family building is fire. That risk has now been compounded by the fact that a trendy EV parked in an apartment’s garage might spontaneously erupt into an unextinguishable inferno at any time.

I know that I will be receiving the usual emails reminding me that there are more fires involving gasoline-powered (“ICE” cars than from EVs. Of course there are, because there are so many more ICE cars on the road than EVs, and when ICE cars get in wrecks, the gasoline sometimes combusts.

But ICE cars just don’t spontaneously burst into flames like EVs do. There is essentially no risk that a parked ICE car in a garage will burst into flames, while there is a very real, greater-than-zero risk that an EV will spontaneously combust, and cause tremendous damage to everything around it. And above it.

For safety reasons and for insurance purposes, buildings with covered parking garages really need to start considering a ban on EVs.

58 @38 insurance riders for those with EV's

You'd think so, wouldn't you? It usually comes up only in health insurance discussion, but -- there is a lot of internal politics with insurance. If something is officially blessed, like certain personal practices, or dangerous but well-intentioned tech revolutions, magically the risk will be spread across everyone in the market. Only those innovations unliked by The Committee result in special extra charges just for the practitioners.

61 Lithium batteries are inherently unstable. When they break down (collision, corrosion, or just wearing out) the fire that can result cannot be quenched until the fuel is all consumed. And the smoke is poisonous. They are a fire hazard and should not be used in vehicles that might get in a collision. They even go up in spontaneous combustion while parked in a garage!

He would keep closer tabs on that for obvious reasons than I do.

But making batteries with lithium ingredients is not the only way to make them. Part of the biggest problem, I understand with using other means is that they weigh more which obviously affects mobile use.

90 President Joe Biden has announced he will travel to Italy in January to meet with Pope Francis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The White House said Biden spoke with Pope Francis by phone on Thursday, during which he “graciously accepted His Holiness Pope Francis’s invitation to visit the Vatican next month.” Pope Francis will receive Biden, only the second Catholic to serve as U.S. president, in the Vatican on January 10 to “discuss efforts to advance peace around the world,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

People have become so used to the idea of "ideology" being something that every politics has. It's not though.

Ideology is actually a theory on how people should be governed, almost always academic, and almost always opposing whatever pragmatic opposition that may arise from the implementation of that agenda.

If you have an ideology, that's what's important, meeting the goals of the theory. Not responding to the pushback of the people.

Marxism is an ideology, Fascism is an ideology, Self-rule is not. Self-rule is an idea of the purpose of government, and doesn't demand any outcome, necessarily.

So, progression, along a theory will always try to grab power to execute that agenda, and that means any popular opposition to that agenda, must be made illegitimate somehow.

Chattanooga used to be a distribution point and industrial center due to its river and its rail network access.

When the old smog producing industries went under, the city did not do well at first and only gradually recovered by shifting to lifestyle and tourism promotion. Did not hurt after TennCare crashed and burned that Tennessee has no state income tax for those relocating.

Still has a high crime rate in some areas which can spill over to the tourist areas on occasion.

136 The myth that ICE vehicles catch on fire more frequently than EV's is just that - a myth.

The rate of spontaneously ignition of vehicle fires for EV's is much, much higher than ICE vehicles. ICE vehicles catch on fire "more frequently" due to accidents and arson. Even then, most ICE vehicle fires are put out easily before any collateral damage is incurred.

Whereas with EV fires, and more terrifyingly - VCE (Vapor Combustible Explosions) start seemingly by themselves with the vehicle at rest.

The South Korean Insurance industry just last year found that EV fires do in fact out-pace ICE fires - and when they do catch fire, the cost of the damage is much, much worse.

The only thing keeping the rest of the world from recognizing this obvious fact is the FUD emanating from the EVangelist lobby.

Just like to add to your excellent summary that ideology beliefs in people create a causal mechanism in their mind between their beliefs in how the world works and specific policies meant to forward putting their 'principles' into action.

It is a relatively small percentage of a given population at any time that are ideologues--estimates are about 10-15 percent while most people have broad outcome preferences (peace, prosperity, etc.) but not much idea how to bring those about.

Average people can decide eventually what policies they do not like or what policies they do like based on experiences. Vietnam War is an example.

Once they have come to public judgment on a matter, it becomes very difficult (and frustrating for ideologues with a 'better' way) to change their minds.

Because people who listen to the voters are "On the Right" where fascists are.

It's illiterate logic.

Also, thanks to James Lindsay's podcast, I now know the manipulation that Engels put on "The State".

So, in Engels view, if you can't establish that the formal power is "the lower classes for the benefit of the upper classes" then you (rolls eyes) "Don't have 'A State'!"

Because Engels defined "The State" as that power that oppresses the lower classes for the benefit of the upper classes. So, you can have the Dictatorship of the Proletariat until Jesus comes to claim His Throne, and the "Government has withered away" because in theory it's no longer "oppressing the lower classes".

So, as long as the authority of the Organ Formerly Known As The State mandates that nobody question that there is not a lower class being oppressed for the benefit of another class, the "State" has "withered away" and we have Engelian "Utopia".

Lithium battery fires are far more toxic than a gasoline fire. And as Sponge points out, the only way to actually put it out is massive doses of water to cool the ingredients down past the combustion point.

But, pouring water on an electrical system can cause shorting in the remaining cells which can reignite the fire so putting out a lithium multicell fire becomes an exercise in futility until it burns itself out eventually.

Yup.

And that's how you get "Lysenkoism". You start insisting that reality really coincides with your enlightened view and that what everybody has believed about reality before is simply the witchcraft of the Structure of Oppression.

So, Lysenko earnestly believed that nature was really at base more cooperative than what "Capitalists" had made dogma. And as head of Soviet Agriculture insisted that all people who had formerly applied themselves as skilled farmers, heed the "True Cooperative Nature of Nature" more consistent with Marx's theory.

Corporations often get a dead cat bounce and one of the virtues of a conglomerate like Disney is that earnings from one unit can offset poor performance in another for a time.

Eventually though, amputations are needed to exit dying businesses like cable/broadcast tv or the whole conglomerate starts to disintegrate.

The mighty Intel is currently mired in such a situation despite its current profits. The longer term prognosis though is more serious unless serious changes are made including deciding whether or not to exit the Foundry business.

Tesla does not sell the roadster any more and while the Model 3 is theoretically a $35k car transaction prices are higher.

Camrys can be cheaper but those transaction prices are closer to $40k.

The car in this story was a Kia and it doesn't say what model but it's going to be priced mid-50s. Which if you look at prices of mid size SUVs in any dealership is about middle of the pack.

The right needs to use the "Sue and Settle" strategy that the left has employed whenever they are in power.

Essentially our aligned groups sue the bureaucracies and agencies over a rule they don't like - and instead of fighting it in court, the agency simply "settles" the case by relenting to the "aggrieved" party.

The problem is not a single f*cking spineless ICE manufacturer (maybe Ram, with Kuniskis back at the helm) will do that.

Why are they repeating themselves like that?

I think in the Biden's-been-senile-the-entire-time story the media was outed as being water carriers for whatever the DC Party wants.

The media is repeating baseless DNC-strategy spin.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic

I noticed that Musk application of AI and that is exactly how to apply it as an expert system rather than diddling around with general AI answering stupid questions as on reddit and quora.

Computers are extremely good at fitting in the gobbledygook of bills in a timely fashion if they have been trained on the existing US Code and spending authorization bills. Sort of like the other AI techniques in upscaling images (use the current graphic info to infer what a higher resolution pix would be etc.)

So, Grok could get a good summary quick of a current bill and how it affects current existing law (including spending bills) going forward.

Nice application of it and empowering to people. Has to scare the shit out of DC and its power mongers.

Great discussion here by Rush Limbaugh when President Trump threatened a government shut down over illegal immigration and the border wall.

July 2018: https://bit.ly/4ggSNGN

So Trump is taking the exact opposite route. He is saying he would be willing to do it. The key is over what? Immigration. Trump is showing he’s not afraid of a government shutdown — which, believe me, the base of this party loves. The base of the Republican Party… We know now, by the way, any poll shows Trump has 85 to 92% support the Republican Party. The Republican base is Trump’s now.

It’s not a bunch of populist nationalists. It’s the mainstream of the Republican Party that’s for Trump, and they hate this cowering before the Democrats and the media over government shutdowns. They hate giving up every policy idea in the face of the blackmail of the government shutdown.

Posted by: Elric The Blade
=====

I'm okay with them doing that these days though. Because as more comes out about media corruption and collusion with the Democrat message, and the more they distort contexts to make their message, the greater the likelihood that they cause a few more would-be drones to walk away.

I saw this video the other day of a guy who was said that his last day as a Democrat was a DNC debate. The context is that he had lost his ample-coverage-low-premium health insurance under "Obamacare". And he replaced it with a plan that cost (I think) 12 times more for a 6 times larger deductible.

What he saw was every Democrat on stage raised their hands to give illegal aliens free health care. And that was his "Last Day as a Democrat".

289 I'd rather have a flatworm on our side than that guy. It took a decade of pain for him to finally say, "the ACA didn't deliver on its promises." He should just stop voting. That's the best scenario. He deserves no voice in American governance.

Most people deserve no voice in the implementation of government power to compel their neighbor against their will. Which is all, really, the only thing that government can do.

Most people, my entire life on any topic, will make statements in certain tones that let you know "don't question this". You know how to send most people into absolute meltdown ? Question it anyway. Then don't let the topic change.

That's it. Most people are slaves to their emotion. They don't think their way through life. They feel their way through.

297 I love the argument that Elon couldn't possibly have read a bill that large as fast as he claimed he did.

So, therefore, we should just go ahead and push through all of what Elon can't get a staff to read through or something.

There's a reason why Democrats keep messages short. So you can't think much in that time.

However, some people suggest that Vivek actually read the entire bill and Elon just posted Vivek's call outs.

300 I haven't bought Disney stock because I despise the company. But there's upside to the stock.

I bought some Intel near its bottom, at $20. I think it's worth at least $30. $40 if it can get its ass back in gear. We'll see.
Posted by: Elric The Blade at December 20, 2024 12:04 PM (iFTx/)

I can't figure out Disney stock.
They are massive and diversified, and are facing a shitload of problems in 2025. Their main profit center, Disney World, will face competition from Epic Universe opening this spring, as Disney raises prices and tries to chisel every nickel from brain dead pixie dusters.

Movies lately have been doing meh (breaking even/modest profit), but their are not many big flicks on deck for '25.

D+ is a disaster. The Hulu merger is not synergistic.

Then there is ESPN ( I am not familiar with it enough to judge) and ABC ( a POS network).

Having said that, the company can turn itself around if they Pinochet Eiger and their woke-ass cadres and start 1. Telling good stories and 2. Responding to what customers want at a reasonable price.

That my $0.02.

Note to self: Quit giving the kids our old cars when we get new ones.
Posted by: Tonypete

Treat cars with care and basic maintenance, many can last for over a decade. Cars from the 90's to the early 00's, perhaps 300k-500k miles without major work on engines or transmissions.

But, I do think that there has been a general deterioration in auto reliability over the last ten years or so which is caused by government required geegaws for safety or EPA hoops, poor parts sourcing from dubious quality suppliers in third world countries like China or Mexico, and the massive increase in electronics of all sorts in cars.

Which means ultimately that a battery has caused the problem, same as EVs.
Not that that means anything.

305 More carbon dioxide in the air is good for the environment. It feeds the plants which makes the world greener. More plant life means more food for animals that eat plants. More food for animals that eat plants means more food for animals that eat the animals that eat the plants. It’s a win/win all around! Global warming is a hoax. If more carbon dioxide could make the atmosphere “run-away” to extreme heat it would have done so long ago when there was significantly more carbon dioxide in the air. It didn’t because we are too far from the Sun, unlike poor Venus. Poor Mars is too far from the Sun so too cold and too small to retain its atmosphere. We are here in the golden mean distance, large enough to retain our atmosphere and internal magnetism (useful to deflect cosmic rays and much of the solar flux). Life here is not only possible, but pretty good, at least for a few billion years more. If you’re still here in a few billion years, please remember to turn out the light (or God can do it for you!).

My first car was a '64 MG Midget. I learned a LOT about working on cars with that thing. My hands were small enough that I could replace the starter motor without having to remove the distributor. I lived at Pick-n-Pull.

307 I’ve only seen one ICE vehicle ever spontaneously combust. Of course it was a bad battery.

Fire extinguished rather quickly, even if the responding fire fighters originally couldn’t be bothered with actually spraying the water on the flames vs. on the closed hood.

308 1. As the number of EVs grows, we're seeing more EV fires where the EV is parked in the garage of an apartment building.
2. ...causing insurance companies to consider telling building owners that their fire policies will no longer cover EVs parked in garages of those buildings.
3. Pro-EV wokiez in the biden regime threaten an Executive Order banning that, claiming it "unfairly discriminates" against people who own electric vehicles. Since "unfair" is a winning buzz-word for wokiez, Americans don't object.
4. Insurance companies go to Plan B: raising premiums on those buildings.
5. biden's handlers have him sign an Executive Order barring insurance companies from doing that, claiming it "unfairly discriminates against people who own EVs."
6. Barred from raising premiums on the source of the problem, insurance companies--understandably unwilling to lose money--raise insurance premiums on ALL buildings with underground garages.
7. biden's woke handlers congratulate themselves on "saving duh Erf" by nullifying yet another reason NOT to own an EV--by forcing all Americans to pay the true cost of owning an EV.

8. biden's woke Democrat staffers laugh.

309 It is remarkable how the environmentalists can demand that users of fossil fuels or chemicals put all sorts of filters and devices to capture almost every molecule of possibly harmful compounds. But they then look at a burning EV sending clouds of toxic substances and have no comment.
