23 I had lunch with a former frequent opponent frenemy [hereinafter "F"] when I was a member of the bar. He told a story about an ethically challenged attorney [hereinafter "EC"] we've both known for decades. F and EC represented two similarly situated codefendants on a routine case and each received a similar retainer. The DA was reasonable and each got the same deal and neither lawyer had to do much work. So everybody is happy, right? Well, F figured his time and refunded 75% of the retainer. EC refunded 0%. So a few days later, F gets a call from EC. EC wants F to call up his client and either tell him he made a mistake and he needs the refund back or tell his client, "Boy, that EC is a helluvan attorney and did all the work that got you these favorable outcomes!" F did neither.

I always found EC highly amusing rather like Mr. Haney on Green Acres.

42 True story. When I lived in Boston I had a small Saab wagon because I needed something I could hall stuff in to go to boat, fit the dog and find parking in Boston which is a nightmare.

My last Golden was the most car riding dog in the world. He did the two window thing non-stop with an occasional face press on the rear window if a car got close behind us. He would whine if we went anywhere without both windows down even in the dead of winter.

One time after a trip to the marina I left him on the boat to go to the pub at the marina to get lunch. I ended up sitting next to a couple who had a doodle and we starting chatting about dogs. They told me they followed a car from Boston that morning and there was this goofy dog who kept doing the 2 window, rear windshield smash in front of them and they showed me the video they took on their phone and laughed like hyenas. We spent the afternoon having drinks on the boat with the dogs.

He was such a great dog.

In order to pass a CR without going through committee it takes a 2/3 vote not a simple majority. There was zero chance any Democrats were going to vote for this bill and Republicans have only a tiny majority.

156 Quick note. The house allows bills to proceed directly to the floor via a suspension of the rules but it requires a 2/3rd vote which the Dems clearly would not support.

The longer route to the floor is via the Rules Cmte which sets the rules for a bill , time for debate, amendments, etc. Then a bill can go directly to the floor after Rules and it only requires majority vote to pass

That's the question. As whig said above this bill was voted under "suspension" rules not as a committee bill and the rules for a suspension bill require a 2/3 vote to pass. There was no chance that was ever going to happen.

My guess would be that this was used as a means to slow the process down and start again with this bill used as the basis of where to begin negotiations but that's just a guess.

I had a cat that went wild due to exposure to Feliway calming pheromone misters when it wore off. He was charging another cat and out of control. He got me good, had to keep the bleeding going to avoid infection.

So, he needs to get a referral from his primary care physician to be seen outside the VA. But he's on vacation. So. It's demoralizing to him.

On the plus side, cats do have a learning curve. The combination of understanding how hard the grip is to break combined with the plate of tuna fish* waiting for them at the end of the ordeal tends to induce (grudging) compliance.

Concur.
At the end of Desert Storm my unit got stuck running the ports and the return of forces to the States and back to Germany. An annoying extra two months on the deployment while the port troops got into place and we could.leave. (We were an artillery unit). Once we were set up, it was remarkably easy. We had a plan, the military ran it, the civilians stayed out of the way.
As I watched Afghanistan unfold, I knew early on it was screwed.
Yeah, some generals needed to fall on their swords.on this.

Thing is, there is no emergency for a government shutdown, the reaching of the debt limit is only slightly more concerning.

After the whole Budget Guidance legislation passed in 1974, there were multiple 'shutdowns' that no one noticed because Congress simply could not pass its bills on time. Federal fiscal year used to run to June 30th and was extended to Oct because of this fault.

Twas not until GHWB etc. that the showdowns became highly covered and that was because it was just before the First Gulf War kicked off and the Dems demanded GHWB fall on his sword by raising taxes so the Dem controlled Congress in 1992 could spend more and GHWB could kick off his Gulf War.

One of the advantages of living in a small state is you tend to run into everyone including politicians or at least you know people who have. Jack Reed lives in my neighborhood and my best friend went to high school with Sheldon Whitehouse's wife and knows him from social circles.

Most people in DC are incredibly average at best. AOC almost won one of the most powerful committee chairs in the House for Democrats.

Smart, impressive people in DC are the exception and they are few and far between.

CR bill was in the House this week. Schumer, as typical, has not done jack shit in the Senate so that the House GOP could immolate itself.

If the Senate can do the shell bills for all sorts of things like Obamacare, then they can do this for a CR. Thing is, they are waiting for the House Speaker and GOP idiots to cave first to prevent a 'shutdown' when the Fedgov shuts down for the weekend anyway and then a holiday.

Essential services are maintained in a shutdown and anyway Biden is in the WH and Schumer in the Senate. They can jolly well fall on their swords to pass anything.

Failure theater is a thing. That being said, as I said upthread, this was under suspension of the rules requiring 2/3rds majority to pass. Without the goodies, the Dems were not going to vote for it.

Last I heard, some version of the CR would go through Rules Cmte and then it can go on the floor only requiring a majority vote.

The neighbor's girl is in her twenties. She can't get a job that works more than 35 hours in a week because the state would require her employer to provide insurance. If she gets a second job she has to juggle the two schedules. She never gets OT. She needs help from her mom to own a car. She can't afford an apartment on her own much less consider buying a house. She cannot afford health care so she is on Oregon Health Plan, and does not have a doctor, just someone assigned. She spent her senior year in school in a mask. She already has student debt.

I am surprised more don't want to kill someone.
