Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Congress Votes Itself a Pay-Raise Because It's Doing Such a Crackerjack JobThe 40% pay raise was hidden in a 1,000-page plus continuing resolution. Their salaries went from $174,000 -- which is already pretty good -- to $243,000. That is a big, big raise. Not too many people get a 40% company-wide raise. The last-minute continuing resolution was only needed because Congress did not do its job and pass a budget during regular order. In other words, they did not do their jobs, and they didn't do their jobs so well that they figured they were owed a 40% pay raise.

I’m of the mindset that congressional pay should be a lot higher. Make it $1M. It’s chump ch age in the grand scheme of things given the trillions spent.
But if pay were something like $1M a lot of successful people would want to run for congress. And it would cut down on corruption. If you’re making $1M a year, you’re less likely to risk that to take bribes. This is why now most of congress is really rich people who don’t care about pay. But someone making $300k is unlikely to give up a career to run for congress to make $200k. These are the people you want in there, is t it? The ambitious and successful people. Congressional Pay Raises are restricted by the 27th Amendment. Never heard of it? See below. By my reading it prohibits any raise in this CR from going into effect for about 23 months. Is that what the CR puts into law? I doubt it. Whig, what's your take?
Twenty-Seventh Amendment: No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened. Discussion: The Twenty-Seventh Amendment prevents laws that modify Members of Congress’ compensation from taking effect until after an intervening congressional election. The Supreme Court has not decided any cases interpreting the Twenty-Seventh Amendment. Nonetheless, the unusual circumstances of the Amendment’s ratification, which occurred more than 200 years after Congress initially proposed it, have raised important questions about Article V’s process for amending the Constitution. DC is a very expensive town these days, and they generally need to maintain two households, if you count the one back in their district.
sounds more to me like they should be living in a dormitory. Posted by: anachronda at December 18, 2024 01:50 PM (v3pYe) Make Congress housing just like Military housing... make a district they can live in while in DC, that belongs to the States themselves, with the States funding it. Make them live and stay in their districts, constantly surrounded by their "garbage" constituents, only to visit DC for ceremonial purposes like the SOTU inaugurations. I don't think Congress deserves any additional money. We have people in Congress who spend their entire adult lives there so obviously they either think they are making plenty now or they realize they are too stupid to make this kind of money in the private sector and most are.
The only way I would agree to increased pay is a completely different way of selecting representatives and I use the term select on purpose. If they are going to get paid like rockstars then they should be rockstars and we will never get that when we let objectively stupid people help chose them. AOC is complete smooth brain. Almost all the information available to Congress is available to the public. There are actually firms who specialize in scooping up all the committee agendas and documents, then trade off that information. That’s why it’s not insider trading 99.9% of the time. There have actually been numerous accusations where congressman have pulled out those agendas and materials as proof.

1 Health Insurance Subsidy: Congress members purchase their insurance through an Affordable Care Act exchange, and 72% of their premiums are covered by a federal subsidy.
2 Lifetime Health Insurance: Upon retirement, Congress members are eligible for lifetime health insurance under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. 3 Pension: Congress members receive a pension based on their age, length of service, and salary. The pension value can be up to 80% of their final salary, which is $174,000 per year. At an 80% rate, that’s a pension benefit of $139,200. 4 Thrift Savings Plan: Congress members participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, a 401(k)-like investment vehicle with fees of just 0.03%. 5 Death Benefits: If a Congress member dies while in office, their surviving family receives at least one year’s worth of salary, or a minimum of $174,000. 6 Retirement Allowance: Upon retirement, Congress members receive an annual allowance, which varies depending on their position. For example, House members receive a $900,000 annual allowance for staff and $250,000 for travel and office expenses, while Senators receive a budget close to $3.3 million. 7 Free and Reserved Parking: Posted by: Truthbomb at December 18, 2024 02:04 PM (PHUO7) Posted by: Candidus at December 18, 2024 02:04 PM (dsKux) 302
