Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A bold educational change in New ZealandIt is a rare day that I suggest we follow New Zealand’s example for anything, but this is one step Congress and the Trump Administration should strongly consider in their efforts to force universities to reform themselves (which they are not going to do without concentrated and sustained outside pressure): From Science magazine:Links at the link. BOLD! What do you think led to this move?Amid cuts to basic research, New Zealand scraps all support for social sciences This week, in an announcement that stunned New Zealand’s research community, the country’s center-right coalition government said it would divert half of the NZ$75 million Marsden Fund, the nation’s sole funding source for fundamental science, to “research with economic benefits.” Moreover, the fund would no longer support any social sciences and humanities research, and the expert panels considering these proposals would be disbanded. Hmmmmm . . . New Zealand expects to post budget deficits over five-year forecast period Immigration: Another annual record for departures from New Zealand Imagine taking budgeting into consideration when designing university programs. First, I am sure that if the Trump Administration cuts off NSF and other federal funding for university social sciences and humanities, the campus whiners won’t call it “astonishing.” They’ll call it “genocide.”Remind you of anything going on in the USA right now? Hayward also got curious and looked up the bio of a professor quoted by Science because of her interest in the importance of social sciences to New Zealand’s economy and “social cohesion.” Read her research accomplishments and interests at the link. She seems to be fascinated by the concept of "nation", especially with regard to Northern Ireland, and she has been concerned about pre-9/11 stereotypes of Irish terrorists. One could imagine by trying really hard how that research could improve the social cohesion and economy of New Zealand for certain people. But can she show us her data? How about her other interests? Does studying them improve social cohesion and the economy? Where are the data? She has a PhD from Stanford, so there may be some professors pretty much like her stateside. And some who are more feisty and disagreeable. There is an appealing photo of her at the link if you're into professors who are into cosplay. Students are not being well-educated at our current universities pretty much anywhere in the West. Got any suggestions for federal or state authorities, or donors here in the USA? The droneswarm has only intensified over the last week. And that’s just in New Jersey. On Capitol Hill, the spending drones have suddenly hit some electronic interference in the form of Elon Musk, and boy are they hopping mad about it. Imagine—a billionaire not named Soros or Bloomberg having the audacity to get involved in politics! And media drones such as George Stephanopoulos and Chris Cillizza are losing altitude fast.

Both terrorism and regular crime are seen as positive by western elites. Because fear will allow them to push for ever more control over society. Now they won't use their additional power to stop terrorism/crime but the compliant FNM will obscure that. How many times have you seen "we have to do something!" when there are already laws against some outrage...laws that weren't enforced against politically sensitive groups? Every activity was heavily regulated and heavily taxed. For some reason X has put a couple of videos in my feed of a woman arguing that the Crimean Tatars are "indigenous" to Crimea, as opposed to Turkic invaders who "displaced" the Greeks and other ethnic groups who were living in Crimea earlier. The Official Explanation, as given on Wikipedia, is that the Tatars "merged" with the existing population of Crimea, so the Tartars count as indigenous. We should try that argument with Europeans and American Indians. Next up, I expect to see videos explaining that the Turks are indigenous to Turkey. Next up, I expect to see videos explaining that the Turks are indigenous to Turkey.
It's a difficult line of argument - you need to understand that being allegedly Indigenous is all-important in the United States, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia; and being allegedly Indigenous is utterly unimportant in Europe. One wouldn't want to view the new masses of people flooding into Europe as coloristic settler-invaders, like one views historical immigration into the US/Can/Aus/NZ area. That part of the world had a large number of groups move through it - the Scythians, Alans, Huns, etc. Though to your point the Greeks had the longest most notable presence in the area. The tax cuts offered are generally trivial to the standard of life of middle class and above people. Want to really encourage family and kids? Married couple pays 50% of their combined tax rate after all other deductions are made. Then each kid as he increases the size of the family reduces it further - one kid 33%, two kids 25% and so on. This would save enough money to really have an impact on people's lives and encourage rich/upper middle class people who can afford kids to have them. And yes it would in the end heavily penalize singles and DINKs. Posted by: 18-1 at December 21, 2024 12:24 PM (oZhjI) 132

Constantine and a few successors did make a stab at it by issuing gold currency, but he linked it with price controls, but in turn those were only followed where there was any enforcement. Personally I think the resurgence of Europe was based around the development of credit markets which gave a point to long-distance trade. Posted by: Kindltot at December 21, 2024 12:30 PM (D7oie) 143

I toured NZ on a bicycle January 1990.The single lane bridges along the western coast southern island have no guardrails, just a small curb. There’s a reason for doing so. That whole section of coast is very rural, quite pretty, dripping wet.The flightless birds were very curious. The sand flies there are aggressive.
The road over the southern pass from the coast was surfaced with compacted clay. I don’t recall seeing more than a few cars while crossing to the summit. You make that summit and the terrain looks like eastern Washington/ Wenatchee. Posted by: 13times at December 21, 2024 01:17 PM (BQSJx) 180

Senator Britt could have made a much better presentation if she had read her aides written presentation a couple of times before coming to the dais. BOLD! What do you think led to this move?

Economics is a social "science." And so they're cutting out economics as having no economic benefit.
Sounds about right, actually. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at December 21, 2024 01:29 PM (YqDXo) 184
Stupid fuckers don’t have the chops to pass Physics?
Just start a Physics “Studies” course, and bitch about Whitey instead. Thus preparing students to compete in the global economy. 5th grade Indians taking Calculus will certainly be no match for gender-dysphoria drug-addled youth learning to gobble cock for Social Credit scores. Another reason the Western Empire fell so completely and permanently is that accounts of the day tell how burdensome and expensive Imperial control had become - sounds familiar. Every activity was heavily regulated and heavily taxed. Most all of the rural towns and villages found it far easier and cheaper to just pay tribute to their new Barbarian overlords, rather than suffer under Imperial control. The barbarian kings wanted money, but other than that didn’t care much how things were run.
Posted by: Tom Servo at December 21, 2024 11:54 AM (7MHHr) Speaking of 'Imperial control', the Eastern Roman Empire 's bureaucracy got so bad that there's a name for it that's lasted to this day - Byzantine. Heh. Posted by: Chairborne!...Desk From Above! at December 21, 2024 02:12 PM (JDH8J) 186

Had I known nothing about this other than reading this Grok summary on X, I would not have any idea this was an Islamic terrorist attack by an illegal:

On bridges -
Hawaii has a lot of one lane bridges. Outside of Honolulu the whole state is BFE. It's been 20 years but one post card pretty valley had one access road, one lane, very steep, no guardrails. Posted rules were 4x4 only (4L), vehicles coming up had right of way. Nobody fvcked with those rules. Valley had maybe a population of 100.
