Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - January 8, 2025 [TRex]
Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.
This is the Wednesday night ONT.19 participants made guesses for the financial numbers quiz.
Every participant for the numbers quiz also attempted the event quiz. Collective Horde wisdom:
Ammo prices remain unchanged, gas prices fall, S&P 500 up slightly, lumber and Ford F150 prices rise slightly, Smith & Wesson, Tesla and Home Depot all rise modestly. The Euro gets weaker and Bitcoin rises slightly. We already have a development for the event quiz with Trudeau's announcement. 26 Hordelings called it. There is otherwise a lack of consensus on the events quiz but RFK and SpaceX Starship launches look good. A majority of the Horde projects a Supreme Court vacancy. Thanks for playing along. It will be interesting to see how it turns out!
But a new study suggests that there is nothing to worry about in the near future: There is not enough molten material pooled in one place to trigger the sort of violent eruptions that have caused massive disruptions in the past. The study also suggests that the primary focus of activity may be shifting outside of the caldera formed by past eruptions.
That has allowed the research team to build a three dimensional map of the molten material underneath Yellowstone and to determine the fraction of the material in a given area that is molten. The team finds that there are two major sources of molten material that extend up from the mantle crust boundary at about 50 kilometers below the surface. These extend upward separately but merge about 20 kilometers below the surface. While they collectively contain a lot of molten basaltic material (between 4,000 and 6,500 cubic kilometers of it), it's not very concentrated. Instead, this is mostly relatively small volumes of molten material traveling through cracks and faults in solid rock. This keeps the concentration of molten material below that needed to enable eruptions.

Husband and I, in our almost 50 years of marriage, whoa, we're old. Anyways, our favorite vehicles have been Surburbans, the back in the day when they were awesome and my Chrysler minivan. Scoff if you must about the minivan, lol, but that thing can haul tons of stuff. We've moved full sized couches in it and didn't have to bungee cord the hatch. It is 12 years old and only has 85,000 miles on it. We keep it maintained and hopefully it will keep running.

Chef Gruel is one of the good ones. He had a few casual seafood restaurants called Slapfish in Orange County. He held the line and kept the place open in Huntington Beach during the lockdowns. The food was good, staff was good, and we went out of our way to patronize his restaurant. He sold that chain and has a new gig now.

A couple of seasons later they reveal one crew member is way, way stronger then originally hinted at as she can rewind time and replay it learning from past failures and in doing so has largely been responsible for the success of Sorbo's mission.
Then in one episode a few seasons later they start an episode by replaying the fight between Sorbo and his treacherous XO. Except the XO wins. And you find out he isn't treacherous. And he tries to do the things that Sorbo has done but keeps failing because of his own limitations. He was/is a better fighter but Sorbo was a better diplomat. And even with the character that can rewind time he keeps failing.

Both the execution and the setup of this plot point were brilliant though sadly the show as a whole was rather lacking. Outside of Lexa Doig it very tight futuristic outfits of course.

I love my 07 Dodge Caravan. It's not even a Grand Caravan, about a foot shorter. It's the most useful vehicle I have ever owned. Plenty powerful, great HVAC, and it can do so many things, including pull a 4X8 utility trailer.

I'm known in our extended family as the duct tape queen, as well as other things which I won't mention, lol.
Kids and grandkids had a problem with a breakdown in Utah driving back here to Wyoming. Husband went to their rescue with my automotive duct tape. It got them back home and we got the vehicle in the shop the next day. They all laugh at me, but hey, duct tape is awesome.

Model T cars look kind of spindly, but in reality they were REALLY tough. They had to be, because “roads” we’re basically mostly rough paths. The solid axles could be twisted round and round and round like a Twizzler and would unwind back to shape. Really amazing. Vanadium was one of the secrets of success for the Model T.
Ford Motor Co. did use good steel for many years.

Had they taken the time to try and get the other car out of the garage they most likely would have burned. The hand crank was dangerous if the engine backfired, hand fractures were common. In fact the impetus for the electric starter was put into high gear because of an incident where a very good friend of the GM president stopped to help a stranded motorist. The engine backfired, the crank handle broke his jaw. It became infected and he died. Kettering of AC Delco fame, a prolific inventor was tasked to make a workable electric starter. I remember some SF movie where a guy has to jump from one ship to another without a space suit. And since one of the ships is between him and the sun he survives - because the near perfect vacuum you won't freeze quickly, and since it is only a few seconds oxygen in your blood stream isn't an issue but the exposure to vacuum/zero air pressure does injure him.

Tesla: Read an Edmonds review, which is from a drivers interest and perspective. It was the Y car which is an SUV of the 3 car. They drove it for 4 years (sport model). 0-60 in 3.2 seconds sucks up the juice, ride so rough/wonky it made his wife nauseous. (I made my wife nauseous too) and superficial build quality was so poor/ they took it in so many times they were ready to throw in the towel. First year. After that kinks were worked out. Zero mechanical problems.
Disappointing I had expected more. Guess it's going to be that Mexican Hi-Lux when Trump drops the CAFE standards.

Read up on Camp Century. Cold War relic. We got it in our heads that a nuclear missile base in Greenland would be a good thing, and this was a test.
Dug trenches and built an underground base, complete with nuclear reactor for power source. Sewage was a problem, turned out. The smell got unbearable.
And the funny thing was we built it without really asking or telling Denmark much about it until after the fact.
The experts miscalculated how much the ice sheets would move, and the whole thing was abandoned.

Charge Fauci with crimes against humnity anyway. He can sit in solitary until he produces a certified copy (or original) of his pardon. I'm holding at 27F. It was 26F but we had one of those little heat bumps. Wind picked up, temp jumped back up to 29F (and dew point dropped fast as well). And it's been gradually cooling back down.

Cedar fire killed 15 people and destroyed more than 2,200 homes. It started out in the sticks by a hunter go got lost, and a helicopter that was sent to drop water was recalled because it was less than 30 minutes to dark. At it's peak, was burning at a rate of 6,000 acres per hour.

It was rural until it wasn't. In Scripps ranch, burned 300 or 400 homes. It's part of the city of San Diego. Flames were at the I-15 and even near I-805.
I remember getting up that Sunday morning to go for a walk with my (then) pregnant wife and wondering why everything smelled smokey and there was an eerie orange glow to the east...

It needs to start in overgrown brush, and needs a good head-start to get to the house-burning phase. If you look at where the fire burned, you'll see it very rural around those homes (homes near or surrounded by a number of canyons and parks). Lots of attention because it's greater LA and rich/famous folks live there.

Reading about the satellite trucks. The old, big ones used to be C-band. Expensive, but high bandwidth and reliable. You needed telephone lines to use them, though, for some reason (it was about authorization and encryption, I think). Then came the smaller Ku band ones.
Anyway, they have them, but it's cheaper and easier to use cellular and fiber optic (if avaible) links, I was reading.

These are almost always near scrubby hills and canyons, where it's basically just dried grass and shrubby shit. It's pretty much chapparal, on steep terrain. I'm not saying they couldn't do controlled burns, but it would be difficult and there aren't hundreds of huge trees with root structures to help with erosion. There would be constant mudslides if they were forever burning the hills. I promise you there are going to be massive mudslides next Spring; it always happens after these fires.
Also, there is a lot of pearl clutching about there not being enough water. And, again, I have no doubt they let the reservoirs get low because of some fucking fish.
But there will never be enough water in to fight a fire in a heavily populated area, when entire city blocks for miles are completely engulfed, in the midst of hot, dry 100 mph winds, and zero air support.
Urban fires are very different than forest fires.

Yeah. Many of the things people bring up are factors, but the core problem is California is overdeveloped relative to its ability to maintain fire safety.
Another factor is the shoddiness of modern construction. Stick-built junk and sawdust held together with glue. Once the winds whip up the flames, it’s too late.
Most of the burned areas should not be re-developed (at least not as densely as they were) and should use new fire codes.
Spoiler alert: they won’t. It’ll be #LosAngelesStrong, Federal bailouts, insurance companies pulling out, leaving more people dependent on the state for homeowners insurance. Then they’ll rebuild cheaper, more fire-prone houses on top of the ashes. Same thing that’s happened in Florida with hurricanes. The risks of living in places with nice weather is socialized, while the benefits are privatized.
We are not a serious nation.

Ah yes I believe this is why many European Monarchs as well as family members were related. BUT Czar Nicholas and his whole family were very beautiful people. Agree. Most major forest/wildfires occur with predictable regularity in sparsely populated areas and never get the opportunity to destroy property on a scale like we're seeing right now. What makes the LA fires different isn't that massive fires have broken out, combine an abundance of wood fuel, aird conditions, winds, and a spark and you will get fires, what is different here is they are occurring on the edge of a major metropolitan area on terrain that is brutal to fight fires and at the same time highly over developed. These fires happen every year. What's different is this year is the scale is unprecedented and has exposed the utter mismanagement of the environment by California various governments. And yes, "The risks of living in places with nice weather [will be] socialized, while the benefits are privatized". Plus celebrities deserve better.

Now I vaguely remember another one, a new Outer Limits episode. Beau Bridges was in it. Some medical researcher prankster, Bridges, shoots his boss up with some paralysis inducing drug, and makes him think he's dead, but his consciousness is still trapped in his body, and he's aware of everything.
Beau goes through the motions of cutting him up and embalming him and all that. Scenes are shot from the POV of the would be dead guy, seeing Beau cracking wise about the whole process.
In the end it really happens, to Beau I think. Karma. He's really dead. He said, I was wrong about one thing, "You still feel pain!" It ends with him screaming as the pathologist starts the autopsy....

If I were dictator of California, I would decree that 12 inch steel pipelines be built at half-mile intervals, up from the shore to the tops of the inhabited canyons. Pump stations on the beach front, with huge Diesel-powered pumps. Lines run out into the ocean, well beyond the lowest tide, from the pump suctions. At the top of each line, big monitor nozzles that could spray a stream of water a quarter mile, and hydrants at intervals along the line for fire department use.

People who live in smaller more compact cities have no idea how huge this place is. From Santa Clarita in the north San Fernando Valley SW to Dana Point is 85 miles along the 5 freeway. And it's ALL concrete.
Similarly, from Thousand Oaks in the west San Fernando Valley, to Redlands along the 101 and 10 Freeways is just under 100 miles. All concrete.
So these fires are getting a lot of attention, but in reality, a very minuscule amount of the populated area is affected.

Remarkably humans trigger a good number of major fires. 3 years ago, if I recall correctly, about 600,000 acres of New Mexico were on fire at the same time. All the fires were caused by the Forest Service. The devastating Palisade, CA fires was caused by the electrical companies transmission lines setting the forest on fire. When I lived in the Pacific Northwest most big fires were caused by lightning strikes, but it was not uncommon for human activity, accidental or malicious, to set the forest on fire. In Los Angeles, the out of control homeless population is constantly starting fires; luckily most of them don't result in devastation at this scale. So yes, asking how these fires started is a fair and essential question. It would seem in this case human activity of some sort plays a factor here.

It would be an excellent terrorist opportunity, though. And cheap af. Just train a few dozen on how to look for weather conditions favorable for santana conditions and turn them loose with matches, gas cans, and strategic maps.
Hell, you wouldn't even have to train them about weather, just make sure they understood enough English to understand the weather reports.
I do think the extremely high winds, way higher than the norm, is what really made these fires so horrific. You couldn't count on that again.

Even worse is these major fires create their own weather systems which include horrific winds that drive fires up and over ridges and down the other side. The rate at which they can double and double again is terrifying. Add thousands of houses sitting on on these mountain sides stocked with abundant fuel to the mix and it was a question of time before something at this scale occurred. As our population expands and we move out into these fire prone areas, we are going to see more devastation like this; The LA fires are an extreme example.
