7 Made it!

Evening and morning, insomaniacals, early risers, and late toilers. 'Tis Woden's Day, the halfway mark of the work week.

The cooler temps the weather mavens predicted have come to pass -- 55 F., damp and rainy. My cold has passed in only about three days, leaving occasional coughs and clogged nasal passages. Amazing what even OTC cold medicines can do.

8 The Rivian charging station sounds great, but -- .46 to .60 per kWh? How much would that come to if, say, your EV was on half charge and you wanted to get close to full?

9 The Rivian Joshua Tree EV charging station is how Rivian Joshua Tree EV charging stations should be. (The Verge)

Meanwhile over at Ars is an acknowledgement that all the cheerleading and handwaving about how great EVs are is pretty much nothing more than cheerleading and handwaving. The Communist commentariat is undeterred: engineering is easy; handwaving is hard.

Hullo, JQ,

Yes, my usual breakfast is a scrambled egg with chili powder and pepper and paprika, sometimes cheese, with a frozen beef & bean burrito sprinkled with the chili powder too. Not super spicy, not like New Mexico chile dishes, but not bland either.

I miss my occasional pipe, but I'm determined not to light up until the cough is gone. That might be tomorrow or not until Saturday. I just can't imagine how cigarette smokers, a club I've never been in, keep on puffing even through a sore throat or a cold. Or how people with rings in their noses deal with that when they're sniffling.

21 The Rivian charging station sounds great, but -- .46 to .60 per kWh?

That is a complicated discussion that mostly centers around rationing your access AKA managed charging - charge at the wrong time it will cost more. This is apparently a good idea instead of a wake up call that system wide there is not enough electricity to support all the planned EVs. Then there is the charging station class. Lower output chargers are cheaper but you mind spend 4+ hours charging a car while higher out chargers will cut that time but you will get scalped for that privilege. This assumes the chargers are working which is often not the case and there isn't an hours long line to get a charger.

Estimating an answer: Tesla Model 3 has a 57 kWh battery. 28 kWh * .46 = $12.88 and 28 kWh * .60 = $16.80; plus lots of your time plus taxes and other fees. After that you will get about 80% of the factory specified range. Typical is 300 miles *. 80 = 240 miles.

My RAV 4 has a 14.75 gallon fuel tank. 7.5 gallons at $2.75 p/g = $20.62. Plus 10 minutes. My real range is about 350 miles using about 11g.

In New York, first-degree murder involves "special circumstances", such as the murder of a police officer or witness to a crime, multiple murders, or murders involving torture. Under this system, second-degree murder is any other premeditated murder.

NY murder types.
2nd - It is defined as when someone commits an intentional killing without a felony under New York's felony murder rule

1st - 2nd degree plus aggravated circumstances such killing a police officer, torture, or terrorism.

Maybe because 2nd degree is a no brainer charge that could be up to 1st later. There is a clear element of terrorism here.

33 Further to my comment #24... From the Tom's Hardware article:

"When installing on unsupported hardware, Microsoft will push a small disclaimer that effectively cancels your warranty in case of compatibility-related mishaps. Likewise, you won't be entitled to receiving updates - including security updates - so we're back to square one."

Never mind, Microsoft is still stupidly playing chicken while trying to imply they're not.

Tune in next week when the story changes to, "Okay you'll get security updates if you don't have a TPM module..."

(in Ron Perlman's voice): "Microsoft. Microsoft never changes."

A good comparison is the VW ID4 and RAV4 Hybrid. The VWs start at 40K and go to 57K while the RAV4 Hybrid start at 32K and top out at 40K. Keep in mind the VW is spec'd at 291 mile range which will, at best, be 80% of that or 230 miles while the RAV4 Hybrid gets 560 miles. It is a no brainer unless you are a Communist. EVs generally make everything worse.

Some cable news Ette got the assignment to cover the Google quantum computing story. Her opening line was "I have spent all day researching this story." She then went on to note that Quantum computing is a lot like a dimmer switch and because of that does amazing things and that septillion is really, really, really big number. It was quite amusing.

65 The other good thing about the BMW, a turbocharged 4-cyl., was that it got great gas mileage. Yes, it needed premium, but I used to see 27 mpg on my regular weekly drives, compared to the 22 i usually get with the Buick. One morning I gassed up, zeroed out the trip meter and mpg track, and drove directly to work, 60-65 mph all the way. When I got off the expressway, about 8-9 miles later, the average mpg read 40! I wonder how that car would have done on a road trip.

75 Around here you can buy a refurbed Thinkpad T14 with 32 GB RAM and a Ryzen 7 Pro CPU that's 100% Win11 compatible for about $325USD. Win11 is just a cosmetic shell upgrade to Windows 10 - it uses the same driver model and the same kernel API - and everything Win11 adds can be easily turned off.

I've been watching people whine about the new version of Windows since 3.11 and I've lost my patience with it. Yes, yes, Bill Gates is filthy rich and you aren't. Get the fuck over it.

1:10^25 which was said to be a statistical impossibility.

But the "science" that is taught in schools is pushed by

If you do nothing come 10/25 security updates to W10 end though you will be able to buy an additional year of support for less than $50. Other than that you machine will continue to work.

You can bootleg a W11 install. See my earlier comments about that. Doing that comes with some excitement but nothing that can't be handled.

You could by a new PC spec'd for W11.

Or you could install you favorite Linux edition. This does come with its own set of challenges and cock-ups in spite of the proponents assuring you it is a utopia.

He's NOT wrong folks, and I say that as someone that encourages people to give Linux Mint a try. There are some software packages that are only made for Windows, and there is no linux version. You can try to get them working under WINE, or you can run them in a virtual environment under Linux that itself runs Windows 11.) I might go that route for my tax software.

Games are the big one if you play them. There are some high end games that just will not play nice with Linux + WINE or will (due to anti-cheat mechanisms) refuse to play in a virtual environment where Windows is installed, plus in the virtual environment there's a performance impact.

Steam DOES support Linux so that's a plus for those that use it. Some games from GOG (Good Old Games) also have linux installers, which is nice.

Me? I still have a Windows 7 box I'm tenaciously clinging to because I have certain games installed and working on it and I won't give them up.

EVs are a niche mode of transportation that come with boatloads of technical issues. They have a place as a transportation option but they are not a universal replacement for our current options. That there is where the EV Communist leave earth - they just can't accept EVs are but one solution. The huge issue right now is how the Federal government has mucked up everything with EV subsidies, impossible CAFE standards, jamming through solar/wind as the future when it isn't and never will be. The Feds have distorted the energy and transportation markets in a way that if allowed to go to its insane end we will have energy shortages, rationing, much higher costs, and less mobility. This has to end. Let the EV thing bubble on its own merits; technology and markets will determine is future without having to strip me of my prosperity and liberty.

If that executive were kidnapping children and chaining them up in his basement for his own amusement, I'd probably be calling this killer a hero.

It gets to the idea of what people consider good and evil. Kill a person to save very specific people from very specific harm and danger? I consider that noble. Kill a person from some vague half baked conception of "societal harm" that you can't even fully articulate? There are people who consider that to be noble. Both positions clearly fall afoul of any conception of law and order.

I won't even hesitate to say that I am right and they are wrong, though.

158 I've installed windows 11 on numerous computers with "unsupported" hardware, it's a sh*t operating system that is essentially spyware that also pushes leftist propaganda.

I find it grimly amusing that the DOJ went after Microsoft for including a browser in it's operating system but not over the fact that it's essentially spyware/malware dissemination platform.

I would assume they don't because more than likely one of the conditions of the DOJ not suing them into oblivion are built-in back doors the IC apparatus controls.

167 It’s becoming obvious to the large automakers (GM, Ford, VW, etc,) that going all in on EV was a huge mistake. They’re losing money hand over fist due to their hopium induced belief that just because the fed.gov mandated & subsidized them that the general public would run right out and buy them,

The Ford Lightning EV truck is the biggest example. They’ve shut down the production line and have so much excess inventory they don’t know what to do with them all.

If BigAuto had gone with hybrid tech like they used to do, and Toyota still does, they’d have been alright. And while hybrid still can’t compete with full combustion engines they are at least capable of getting you around without dependence on charging or good weather and they won’t catch on fire randomly or burn you to death in an accident or have to be totaled if you get in a minor fender-bender.

For tooling around town, commuting, or as a grocery-getter, Hybrids are much better and would fill the gap until EVs are truly viable, which is at least 20 years away.

180 Where Windows 11 really screws you is not allowing you to File Share over your WiFi network unless you are logged into your Microsoft account and not just a Local Account.

This PC I built earlier this year only had a Local Account I made during Win11 install. I figured M$ couldn’t spy on me, as much, with just the Local.

But I have a Win11 laptop that is signed in with the Microsoft account and I could even connect to my iMac over WiFi with it. But no joy on the new machine.

I bit the bullet when I updated to Win11 version 24H2 last week and logged into my M$ account.
I can pull files over WiFi now, but alas, Windows is all in the new PC… ugh.

Did it lead directly to my getting a job outright?. Well, I was at one point the Asst Mgr of a bookstore . I probably wouldn't haven't gotten that job if I didn't care and know about books. The English degree helped with my ability in writing and the theatre degree was an asset in writing and directing church related plays. Also, I was never in debt

Oh I know they’re a pain in the ass to work on.
My nephew has been working on his GFs Ford Focus Hybrid for months on and off.
She’s a beast to her car so that’s part of it.
But the gas mileage on them is tremendous.

I think there is room for both Hybrid and ICE, as well as for EV if that’s what people want.

But the mandates and impossible CAFE standards need to be killed for sure.

197 I find the author's remarks puzzling. The Republicans of the Civil War era put 50,000 people in jails without the benefit of trials and killed POWs in camps via systematic starvation that made the Nazis seem like amateurs. Lincoln also okayed the burning of homesteads, and private property having nothing to do with the war, making the Mongols look like Boy Scouts. Today's Democrats have nothing to do with the Democrats of a 150 years ago any more than the GOPof Reagan has any links to Lincoln.
