Gutfeld (well, technically Timpf) was just showing a clip of The View where Whoopi Goldberg was telling people to chill out and take a break from politics from now until the inauguration, and all the co-hosts were jumping down her throat for saying that.

Sine qua non literally translates as "without which, not". It's the indispensable thing, the element of a thing without which the thing would not be.

"Sine" there in Latin is a preposition meaning "without". I don't know nuttin' much 'bout no Latin, other than all the cases and declinations get complicated indeed.

The "sine" as in the mathematical meaning comes from Latin "sinus", which means a pocket or bay, or bend. That itself came from a medieval mistranslation somehow. They mistranslated some word in another language to Latin "sinus".

Whenever I hear Richard Burton, I think of the book, "How to Speak Southern". There is an entry for "wretched", that goes like this:

Wretched: p noun: Proper name, as in "That Wretched Burton is a good actor".

187 Big news. Netflix is rebooting the Chronicles of Narnia, produced by Greta Gerwig of Barbie "fame." She's quoted as saying it's going to be all about rock and roll.

I can't even.

189 He's pretty beat up. His wife kicked him out of bed because the broken nose makes his already loud snoring even worse. He has to learn to eat and write left handed because of the broken arm and is slated to go to work tomorrow. Hopefully he takes a second look at riding a motorcycle in city traffic in SoCal.
But probably not.

Innumerable bruises, sprains and road rash, broken arm, broken collarbone and one really nice 3 degree burn off a combination muffler/cat.
It was worth it. Even in a helmet, you're connected to the world in a way you aren't in any other vehicle, including little roadsters. The immediacy of control is amazing, and all this at over the ton is better than cocaine- not that I'd know. Eventually - for almost all of us, so relax- the infirmities of age catch up... so I got a trike. They're actually more dangerous than two wheels - same exposure, not as much control- but I figure I've got a few more years. It's not as good, so when I finally can't get my leg over saddle, I think it'll be easier to let go.

191 It's late enough, not to threadjack.

Hubby went to ER today, he was suddenly weak & confused this morning. Fell. Messed his pants, came back to bed and then couldn't stand up... so I called teh amberlamps...

Not 100% sure what's up, but suspect hepatic encephalopathy. Ammonia level elevated. Dang, it's been a long time since we went thru this & in hindsight, likely enough. I missed the clues!

So... doing laundry here. Lots of laundry, while hubby stays overnight at hospital "for observation"

That is a lot miles for that route. Good job. The driving gets easier after that provided the SLC lunatics don't run you over. I swear their speedometers begin at 70 mph.

Birdbath status?

It's about 20 degrees here, I think. Had snow falling the first 35 miles from home, then roads were all bare and dry the rest of the way, and from Vulcan, AB, to Great Falls, it was above freezing, and quite pleasant. Just got colder after than. Worst was at Lima, MT, where it was 12 degrees with a howling gale. Had to let dog out of the car for a pee break. She was real quick about it, LOL. There was a big rig over on its side in the ditch just a mile north of Lima in the southbound lane. No ice. Maybe driver fell asleep, or the wind flipped it. Did not appear to be a total wreck. I felt bad for the cops and tow truck operators working the wreck scene.

Roads were all but empty. Friend of mine said "take the Del Bonita border crossing; not as busy as Sweetgrass." Well, it was not busy, but it was a bout 70 miles of extra driving. Saw some pretty country, so not a total loss.

207 Good evening, good people, from the Adirondacks home of the ugly winter of rain, sleet, wind and just nasty raw wet cold.

209 Utah and Feds should get together and build an I-15 Express. Causeway from somewhere north of Ogden across the salt pond to Toele, and then 4-lane the small roads linking Toele and Beaver. Would shave a few miles off the long trip, and completely avoid the Utah Valley/SLC cluster fuck. Would get a fuckton of trucks of I-15 through the SLC corridor, too, which would benefit the locals there.

211 Taking a major road trip through Western Canada / US in December can be a "what in the hell was I thinking" event. Best one was in a 65 VW from Hibbing, MN to Seattle, WA. I think I left on December 15. It was -30F when I left (air cooled cars produce zero heat in the weather), I stopped in ND because I thought I had a flat only to find out the interstate had 3" of ice on it, Montana was mostly a white out blizzard the whole time, the mountain pass into Idaho was a parking lot as we all chained up and a few miles later unchained, and Eastern WA pretty much was solid black ice the whole way. The sideways rain in Western WA for the last stretch felt like a vacation in Hawaii.

212 Was so very happy when they completed the I205 bypass around Portland. West Linn, for the win!

Used to be a maze (they actually called it The Maze) at Portland-- and there was *always* some construction on it-- talk about clusterfuck! Probably still is there, but I won't drive it again.

At least the VW Beetle was pretty sure-footed in snow! I remember a geologist telling me about a trip he took in winter to Dawson City, Yukon in a VW beetle. The running boards fell off because the bolts froze and broke.

215 I am drinking a can of "Pig's Ass Porter" from Harvest Moon Brewery in Belt, Montana. It is pretty tasty. Label has some pink pigs in tail coats and top hats bellied up to the bar in a pub.

That thing was unstoppable. It did get sporty in Lookout pass when the snow got deep enough that front tires kept losing contact with the ruts - that flat bottom on the VW in the right conditions was sort of a surf board.
