More than that, it was fetishistic thinking. It was like wearing an item to show your devotion to the common good. That was the thing that struck me is that especially for the elites, they wanted everyone to wear the mask (while they did not) so that they could see evidence of their power and the submission of the People.
I still think one of the most tragic things I saw during covid were two things: 1) I was walking Ajax on a perfect sunny day. I was walking down a sidewalk and on the opposite side of the street was an older couple, hand in hand. No one in 20 feet of them, just enjoying each other's company. Both masked. 2) In the grocery store. A woman and daughter (maybe 16 or 17.) The Mom was not masked. The young girl was. What the hell? Posted by: Aetius451AD at December 10, 2024 06:01 AM (bss/y) 83

Even if the mask weren't a "petri dish on your face," the weave was far too open to block any virus. The info was easily accessible. And yet so many of our fellow citizens bought the propaganda and sold it to others. And I still see people with the damn things on. If it's a clerk at a store, I say calmly, "I can't understand you with that thing on your face," and turn away to look for someone less brainwashed. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 10, 2024 05:54 AM (QUTU/) Surprisingly doesn't feel that difficult. Not like when I came in one or two "visits" ago, spitting cotton, nauseous, in pain, and waiting well over an hour before being given anything for nausea or pain (nothing for thirst for hours after that). Compared to that, no pain, no thirst, no nausea, no real hunger, i.e. more than tolerable. Posted by: jim (in hospital in Kalifornia) at December 10, 2024 *** Good luck, Jim. On every issue, no matter how big or small, they will flee from coherence, principle, and reason to fling themselves at the maximally evil position, and then compound the evil by couching that position in words of justice and fairness and goodness in order to corrupt as much as possible. They have nothing to do with toppling aristocracy or unifying the proletariat. They have nothing to do with universalizing public policy or opposing war and conflict. They don't even pretend to anymore. It's all about fostering the evil and destroying the good, and nothing else. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 10, 2024 06:30 AM (y/ZMQ) 123

@Jim: "They got me going commando under my robe."
Funny story for you... I'd had plans to fly long before 9/11 happened, so I found myself at the airport about a week after, headed for a conference. National Guard were posted to the security stations in the airport I was flying out of and they had weapons held at the front, pointing down and left. (This is a lot more effective at getting people's attention and making them want to play nice than the TSA's current nonsense.) Anyhow, I've got someone from the NG standing about 6 feet behind me, while a lady from security checks me over, and asks me to remove everything from my pockets, remove my western boots, and also remove my belt. At that last request, I asked, "Uh... Are you sure about the belt? In the rush to get here at oh-dark-hundred this morning I can't remember if I put on underwear or not, and if I remove my belt, pants may fall down, and y'all might find out if I'm going commando today or not." Security lady gives me that exasperated look, while the fellow in the National Guard just lets out a snort of laughter. I look back over my shoulder grinning and he just nods at me also smiling. Made his day. :-) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at December 10, 2024 06:43 AM (O7YUW) 154

Costco is good at being lower than average. They are not there to give you amazing breaks, but to be consistently lower than the average and that is about that.. we have regular gas stations in our town that are at least as low as Costco and often lower by 10 or 20 cents. Of course the entire gasoline game is a racket, all the gas stations near each other have the same price.

I don't always have a black cloud over my head, but when it's there, it's paralyzing. I've been stuck in the middle of my new book for a couple of months now and my current anti-depressants aren't doing a thing. Also, I don't like this time of year and wish I could lock the doors and draw the shades and not come out until spring. Here's my airplane story: On a trip to Hong Kong, I had to grab ALL the luggage and run to the next terminal, which had changed to the other side of the airport (of course). When we finally got to Hong Kong, my leg and hip were bothering me a little, but I ignored it. Day before we had to fly back, the pain was too much, so saw an herbalist and chiropractor who worked on me until a sickening cracking noise came from my hip. She said I'd jammed my leg into the hip socket and it would get worse if I ever did it again. She put this Gawd-aweful smelling ointment on it and told me I couldn't take it off for 24 hours. So I fly back to the states wearing this stinky ointment the entire flight. When we landed @ LAX, as I was deplaning, a steward tells a stewardess, "There's that smell again! I told you it wasn't me!". Posted by: jim (in hospital in Kalifornia) at December 10, 2024 07:02 AM (SSBCb) 192

Bill Clinton says Hillary lost in 2016 because of the "mainstream media".
Sure Bill. They were never on her side and preferred DJT. Posted by: fd at December 10, 2024 07:39 AM (vFG9F) 242

The impish side of me is strongly hoping that:
A) Wild gets in severe hot water for this shit B) What she leaked turns out to be completely unsubstantiated libel anyway C) Whoever created this tidbit of bullshit gets in hot water, too I don't even really like Gaetz that much, but hey, no enemies in a foxhole. Confusion to the enemy. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 10, 2024 07:40 AM (y/ZMQ) 245

Sure Bill. They were never on her side and preferred DJT. Posted by: fd at December 10, 2024 07:39 AM (vFG9F) The media did exactly what the Clintons told them to do in 2016: Portray Hillary as an insufferable, overbearing, ignorant cunt. They honestly all thought that was her "good side". Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 10, 2024 07:42 AM (y/ZMQ) 249
Today, I hit the big six-oh. Yay me.

The old creepy thing about the N.O. Mass used to be the handshaking. If COVID did something useful, it was making it acceptable to just nod to your neighbors. The new creepy thing is people adopting the Orans position. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 10, 2024 07:00 AM (dxSpM) ---- I hated that artificial make-pleasant with people around me. I can socialize after the service. What's an Orans position? Sounds dirty. Posted by: Ciampino - Weirdly weird at December 10, 2024 07:53 AM (i0xsb) 251
My father had a major stroke yesterday, with not a good prognosis.
I should be on the road sometime today. Any spare prayers would be appreciated. Thanks. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at December 10, 2024 05:18 AM (a1415) Not good. May he make a good recovery, and confound the doctors! Safe travels. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 10, 2024 08:22 AM (TqaEe) 252
118 Jim, I saw the word 'resection' and thought of someone dear to me who had an emergency resection due to a bowel twist and gangrene. They were *this* close to dying. Another hour would have done it. Septic and all. Today you'd never know it happened. Full health.
Prayers for you! Posted by: lizabth at December 10, 2024 06:27 AM (Jfw7U) What a great story! Thank you for posting it. Posted by: m at December 10, 2024 09:08 AM (VnUSN) 253
160 My folks were somewhat interesting.... their position was basically "Hey, i'll strap a wet possum to my face if it'll guarantee everyone leaves me the fuck alone."

That keyboard Pi looks cool. I've been wanting something like it for retro games. Might pick one up.
