Ace featured some tweets from Justine Bateman after the election in November. The 80s actress has been active on X, posting critiques of many post-election liberal meltdown videos. She reviews them from a filmmaking perspective and has drawn the ire of snowflakes everywhere. This article from a few weeks ago tells her story of emerging from the shadows.

The Case of Justine Bateman And Why Gen X Broke for Trump
Three days after the election, Justine Bateman, the former Family Ties star, catapulted herself into the political muck with a tweetstorm to her 140,000 followers that began: “Decompressing from walking on eggshells for the past four years.” She continued: “Common sense was discarded, intellectual discussion was demonized. . . Complete intolerance became almost a religion and one’s professional and social life was threatened almost constantly. Those that spoke otherwise were ruined as a warning to others. Their destruction was displayed in the ‘town square’ of social media for all to see.” In other words, she said out loud the thing everyone has been thinking. At 58, Bateman is a member of Generation X, as am I, so I was hardly surprised to see a Gen Xer—those of us who mostly grew up in the 1970s and early 1980s—willing to say what so many Americans (of all ages) had been thinking: that they were done with being told how to think. That they would no longer put up with the travesties of the past four or eight or 10 years, or whenever you mark the beginning of the Great Awokening: the cancel culture, the pronoun fetish, the war on supposed “disinformation,” and all the rest of it.
The founders gave us the First Amendment for a reason. They gave us the Second Amendment to help protect the First. Or maybe they just had a good sense of humor.

However, the point they established as the western end of the line was disputed by Connecticut and ultimately found to be eight miles too far south. According to a pamphlet in our vertical file, for the next 60 years, "surveyors hired by either Connecticut or Massachusetts set a number of boundaries favorable to the colony that employed them. The only result of these surveys was increased animosity between the two colonies. Even a joint survey in 1702 did little to settle the affair.

NEW: Couple seen leading their rottweilers away from their home after the dogs mauled and k*lled a 5-year-old girl.
The incident happened at the couple's $2 million home in Covina, California.
The girl had reportedly been around the dogs, aged 10 and 6, for her entire life.
It is suspected that the girl is the couple's daughter however that information is not yet public.
"She fell. They (the rottweiler and rottweiler mix) immediately started attacking her," said sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong.
The girl's father then dove on top of her to shield her from the dogs but it wasn't enough.
The girl was rushed to the hospital with injuries to her neck and head. She didn't make it.
The couple's dogs are a 10-year-old rottweiler, a 6-year-old rottweiler/Weimaraner mix, a 10-year-old Weimaraner and a 4-year-old Doberman.

I think there is a lot of executive suite and Governor office people who are deathly afraid of vigilantes because those worthies mandated covid shots, and there is enough evidence surfacing that those shots killed or injured enough people to almost guarantee someone among the survivors is carrying a bitter feeling about it all

My impressions are that it is a neat concept but the overall utility of the vice is drastically limited due to the nature of the 3D printed jaws.
Because the vise jaw mechanism is a 100mm fine dot pitch screw, it takes forever to open and close the jaws, also the plastic jaws/clamps on the vise can't really apply enough clamping force to do real work.
It's really only good to do what the authors real intent was... use it to paint small figurines.
For that, this is the setup for you.
There are people who have developed mounting plates to attach real, small form factor metal vises to the ball mechanism, I might give that a shot.
It does does work nicely as a demo show piece though but not so much as something that can do real work.
It's a shame as it takes a lot of time to print and build out.
And it's quite costly because most people are not going to have the assortment of metric bolts needed to assemble the unit.

In a socialist society the government takes from those that have to give to those that need. Even if you assume the people doing that are virtuous they will use the political power of their positions to force those producers to give up their labor "for the common good". You can't even allow people to do their own thing because the society owns the labor that dissident should be producing.

In those days, a guy in a fucking uniform and a hat would fuel up your machine, and wash the windows, etc. On the downside, most places rolled up the sidewalk at night and getting gasoline at night was few and far between travelling on rural roads.

That is so gentle yet so well said. There is still a lot of very deep anger from disparate groups about the COVID-1984 Dempanic. And the corporate media is certainly not going to touch that third rail with whatever 'talent' they have left and give it a proper airing. Which just makes people angrier. One of my scoutmasters worked for Boise Cascade, and had done a fair share of surveying with chain and compass. They would hike in and find the sector and township corners, and then plot the proposed cuts for the loggers. He said he had a guy on his crew that would save any decent sized shelf fungus (Indian paint fungus conks usually) and when they found a corner he would inscribe it with the date, the location and the names of the crew.
there are some areas in the Cascades where you can't rely on a compass because of magnetic anomalies up there, and you have to do some jiggering to get the numbers right. GPS is a real boon in those areas

The Oregon/California border has some odd variations like that too, but I suspect it is because of either magnetic anomalies or operator error.

Well, if they had shot true meridian lines for their North-South boundaries, there would have been no problem. Sounds like they turned a 90 degree angle from an East-West boundary, which will diverge away rapidly from a true meridian. Here in Alberta (and elsewhere) North-South roads will have a "correction line" in them every six miles or so, to bring them back to "close" to the meridian.

Almost all the colonial farmland in that region was abandoned after the Year of No Summer, and reverted to woods. Another big impact on the older families was the building of Hartford's reservoirs, which put most of the unredeveloped scrub forest and ravines under water. It used to be pretty wild country.

Oh yeah, 3D printing is fantastic for prototyping.
I am 3D printing out the board game Catan, I found some designs for storage bins for the pieces, I want to be able to nest the storage bins in a larger bin, so I scaled down the z-axis on the larger bin and printed it out to test if the smaller bins would fit within the larger bin once it's printed.
It took a couple of tries but I got the fit right, now I'm printing out the larger bin which will take a couple of hours.
I'm 3D printing so much that I'm probably going to add a 2nd printer.

Lewis and Clark did the survey chain thing basically from St. louis all the way to the Pacific coast. “Celestial Observations” took a lot of time. Sometimes a lot of work, because trees might have to be cut down to be able to get a fix on stars or planets or whatever.
Modern surveyors find the old school guys were pretty damn good considering the equipment and conditions.

Separation tests were carried out with an F-14A and inert practice bombs. And it almost ended in disaster.
Sure, the bomb released but the separation charge was not strong enough to kick the bomb out of the slipstream far enough. So, the bomb continued to fly underneath the Tomcat in perfect formation. Talk about pucker factor of 11.
Only by executing a hard break was the Tomcat able to escape its accidental wingman.

I worked as a surveyor after college for about 4 years. On one job we had to resurvey a portion of an Indian reservation boundary in North Dakota. Back when they surveyed the boundary they would break a whiskey bottle over the marker then cover it.
Those original surveyors were damn good using a metal chain for measuring distances. We found over the length of about 5 miles, their original markers were within about two-tenths of an inch off. A truly remarkable feat.

Except the guys who screwed up the meter in France. I can't remember the name of the book, but it's pretty good (if you might like something about surveying and the metric system). They bollixed the measurements from south to north of France and the meter is not actually what it was supposed to be because of it.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was them at a county fair north of Tucson about 20 years ago. Stage was just a tiny bit above ground level and Nielsen started absolutely shredding with Hello There and just didn't stop. He was nowhere near as fast the last time I saw them about 2019 but that's ok, they are all around 70 now

Nope, but ex of 14 years came home from a business trip, came to see me laid up in the hospital, and after seeing me safely home, two days later, promptly lit out on another business trip.
I had to call friends and co-workers to even GET me to the bathroom, as I was then immobile, in my newly altered state. Could not get to bathroom for necessaries, nor kitchen to fend for myself. Oct 1998, Door Dash was someone's twisted nightmare, at best.
Could not have got to the front door, anyway.
I *do* know the meaning of Debilitating Pain. It is a condition to be avoided.

That's one place I can say I've been. Was going to Japan for the World Jamboree in '71. We left D.C., hit Winnipeg for fuel at 4 a.m. local, landed in Anchorage (on a Sunday morning at 6 a.m.) where we got off the plane to stretch our legs and to go on the roof of the airport (back when you could) for some nice panoramic vista photos. Fueled up and took off, landing on Adak (?) to top off the tanks one last time. Didn't get off the plane but saw the tiny little railway and all. Then off to Osaka.

No need to be sorry Deb, I prolly shall be sorry after posting this.
Since Jules has been hospitalized for over a month I'm having problems w/ Flash, our 16 month old Gordon Setter. He's crate trained so at first he was fine being crated while I was gone. J was usually home all day with him.
Now he has caught on that when I let him in he might be crated for several hrs. He has perfected this dance where he comes near me to go inside and then runs away. Over and over.
It's after 1 am here, should I leave his sorry ass outside all night or go check on his stupid ass again? I'm not a Dem so voting times do have a closure time, say one hour from now.

Yes indeed, that's how I lure into the crate. He has always been fed there, otherwise our older dog who does mother him, will simply scoop in and eat whatever is left.
