Making Free Speech Great Again Ace featured some tweets from Justine Bateman after the election in November. The 80s actress has been active on X, posting critiques of many post-election liberal meltdown videos. She reviews them from a filmmaking perspective and has drawn the ire of snowflakes everywhere. This article from a few weeks ago tells her story of emerging from the shadows. ”The ‘Family Ties’ star, who came out swinging against wokeness after the election, speaks for a generation tired of being told what to think.” The Case of Justine Bateman And Why Gen X Broke for Trump Three days after the election, Justine Bateman, the former Family Ties star, catapulted herself into the political muck with a tweetstorm to her 140,000 followers that began: “Decompressing from walking on eggshells for the past four years.” She continued: “Common sense was discarded, intellectual discussion was demonized. . . Complete intolerance became almost a religion and one’s professional and social life was threatened almost constantly. Those that spoke otherwise were ruined as a warning to others. Their destruction was displayed in the ‘town square’ of social media for all to see.” In other words, she said out loud the thing everyone has been thinking. At 58, Bateman is a member of Generation X, as am I, so I was hardly surprised to see a Gen Xer—those of us who mostly grew up in the 1970s and early 1980s—willing to say what so many Americans (of all ages) had been thinking: that they were done with being told how to think. That they would no longer put up with the travesties of the past four or eight or 10 years, or whenever you mark the beginning of the Great Awokening: the cancel culture, the pronoun fetish, the war on supposed “disinformation,” and all the rest of it. The founders gave us the First Amendment for a reason. They gave us the Second Amendment to help protect the First. Or maybe they just had a good sense of humor. If you were very bored one day and built a 3D model of the state of Connecticut, then ran your hand along the top, you’d get to a place, just north of the town of Granby, where your hand would fall into a strange little pocket. This is the “Southwick Jog,” a two-square-mile plot of land where an otherwise straight border between Connecticut and Massachusetts breaks and dips itself a little south.**** Why is there a "jog" in Connecticut's border with Massachusetts? The notch in Connecticut's northern border, just above Granby, is sometimes called the "Southwick Jog". In 1642 Massachusetts hired two surveyors, Nathaniel Woodward and Solomon Saffery, to survey the boundary between that colony and Connecticut. However, the point they established as the western end of the line was disputed by Connecticut and ultimately found to be eight miles too far south. According to a pamphlet in our vertical file, for the next 60 years, "surveyors hired by either Connecticut or Massachusetts set a number of boundaries favorable to the colony that employed them. The only result of these surveys was increased animosity between the two colonies. Even a joint survey in 1702 did little to settle the affair. Collin Rugg @CollinRugg NEW: Couple seen leading their rottweilers away from their home after the dogs mauled and k*lled a 5-year-old girl. The incident happened at the couple's $2 million home in Covina, California. The girl had reportedly been around the dogs, aged 10 and 6, for her entire life. It is suspected that the girl is the couple's daughter however that information is not yet public. "She fell. They (the rottweiler and rottweiler mix) immediately started attacking her," said sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong. The girl's father then dove on top of her to shield her from the dogs but it wasn't enough. The girl was rushed to the hospital with injuries to her neck and head. She didn't make it. The couple's dogs are a 10-year-old rottweiler, a 6-year-old rottweiler/Weimaraner mix, a 10-year-old Weimaraner and a 4-year-old Doberman. Funny, never heard of the Southwick Jog in CT. Never noticed it on a map. Knew people from nothern CT and they never mentioned it. Strange thing from back when colonies/states mattered. Not that which state you reside in doesn't matter today. One only has to look at the Penny trial to know which state you live in still matters. Let's hope that changes. I remember it being an issue in the mid-80s, where double-checking the border location revealed that it was wrong on the maps. So, I've finished printing and assembling the 3D Printed ball vise that was featured on the Hobby Thread a couple of weeks ago.
My impressions are that it is a neat concept but the overall utility of the vice is drastically limited due to the nature of the 3D printed jaws. Because the vise jaw mechanism is a 100mm fine dot pitch screw, it takes forever to open and close the jaws, also the plastic jaws/clamps on the vise can't really apply enough clamping force to do real work. It's really only good to do what the authors real intent was... use it to paint small figurines. For that, this is the setup for you. There are people who have developed mounting plates to attach real, small form factor metal vises to the ball mechanism, I might give that a shot. It does does work nicely as a demo show piece though but not so much as something that can do real work. It's a shame as it takes a lot of time to print and build out. And it's quite costly because most people are not going to have the assortment of metric bolts needed to assemble the unit. Posted by: Thomas Bender at December 09, 2024 10:27 PM (XV/Pl) 103

Assuming we define leftwing as socialist, in terms of authoritarianism leftwing people HAVE to be.
Why? In a socialist society the government takes from those that have to give to those that need. Even if you assume the people doing that are virtuous they will use the political power of their positions to force those producers to give up their labor "for the common good". You can't even allow people to do their own thing because the society owns the labor that dissident should be producing. They would hike in and find the sector and township corners, and then plot the proposed cuts for the loggers. He said he had a guy on his crew that would save any decent sized shelf fungus (Indian paint fungus conks usually) and when they found a corner he would inscribe it with the date, the location and the names of the crew. there are some areas in the Cascades where you can't rely on a compass because of magnetic anomalies up there, and you have to do some jiggering to get the numbers right. Sounds like they turned a 90 degree angle from an East-West boundary, which will diverge away rapidly from a true meridian. Here in Alberta (and elsewhere) North-South roads will have a "correction line" in them every six miles or so, to bring them back to "close" to the meridian. Long ago before the F-14 Bombcat, in the dim early days of the Tomcat's development Grumman and the Navy were thinking of giving the plane a strike capability.
Separation tests were carried out with an F-14A and inert practice bombs. And it almost ended in disaster. Sure, the bomb released but the separation charge was not strong enough to kick the bomb out of the slipstream far enough. So, the bomb continued to fly underneath the Tomcat in perfect formation. Talk about pucker factor of 11. Only by executing a hard break was the Tomcat able to escape its accidental wingman. Posted by: Anna Puma at December 09, 2024 10:55 PM (9rKTR) 179

If you're looking at surveying stories, you might be interested in the border between Beloit, Wisconsin, and South Beloit, Illinois. I remember it being an issue in the mid-80s…
Posted by: Hour of the Wolf Ah, that was after my time there. The good greasy pizza place was over the line in Illinois, where the drinking age was 21, but they didn't card us college kids buying their cheap-ass pitchers. Always contemplated standing astride the Wis-Ill border, with a beer in the hand on the Wisconsin side, legal at 18 at the time. Would I be breaking the law? Just about the only good thing about my time at Beloit College: MiladyJo and I met there. That made it all worth the suffering. The Toledo War was settled by sending the Assistant Astronomer of West Point to re-survey a boundary from Lake Erie to Indiana, by star shots and chain. In the 90's, a professional surveyor group rechecked the marker stones with satellite shots, and other than the stones that had been deliberately rolled over to avoid paying taxes to two states, they were dead nuts.

Our family farm in eastern PA had been in the family for over 100 years. Many of the landmarks described in the original Deed were stone cairns, stone fences, trees or creeks. The land itself was a part of William Penn's cutout. The first modern survey was performed by the MetEd electric utility when they routed a high tension right of way over one of our mountains and through a valley. There was a boatload of negotiation between the adjacent landowners and our family and luckily for everyone, we all pretty much ended up with the same acreage as before. There were minor adjustments but no hard feelings when it was all said and done.
But it was a real mess while it was going on. Posted by: Tonypete at December 09, 2024 11:15 PM (WXNFJ) 208

Maybe. But I don't think featuring a hard left, climate whack job murderer is going to be a big winner for them. And it won't be Alysin Camerota doing the reporting on CNN on either story because she was fired because CNN's ratings are in the toilet. Cause they are losing. Trump's win in 2016 was somewhat of a fluke. They didn't think we could win but when he did they were prepared to unleash hell and neither Trump nor we were prepared for it. We all are now. When the US returned some land, which had been used for military installations, to the locals in Okinawa, there was much consternation. The original Japanese surveying had been plotted out based on the contours of the land. The US had graded it flat. The landowners found they received plots that were measurably smaller than they had been.

Give him my email, willya? He's now a member of the Over the Handlebars Club, and must be properly initiated. You, of course, know the Four Rules, as they related to firearms. There are only Two Rules to compare, for motorcyclists: Rule 1. YOU ARE INVISIBLE. They can seem to look right at you, but they're looking right through you, to the traffic beyond. They don't see you, they won't see you, they DIDN'T SEE YOU. Rule 2. Anyone who CAN "see you" IS TRYING TO KILL YOU! Avoid, accordingly. Guy who pulled (similarly) out in front of me, from a parking lot? My Gold Wing TOTALED his car. I ended up with a broken tibia, multi-broken left ankle (5 screws), road rash and a divorce. Posted by: An Observation sez China Joe not my president at December 10, 2024 12:53 AM (Da7Vv) Getting sexually assaulted by a homeless guy of unnamed racial background will do that; the homeless guy apparently dry humped her or something. Whatever it was, it was definitely inapproprate and I'm sure scary. To top that off, the left accused her of racism and all but then she identified the guy as white. She, like many on the left, have found the right more willing to discuss ideas than the rigid left. Trump getting RFK on his side changed a few minds, too. Some on the left are now seeing it's not R vs D, it's We the People vs They the Cabal/Government/Technocrats. And Trump is a most unique message sent from We the People to those assholes ru(i)nning things. Posted by: RickZ at December 10, 2024 01:08 AM (gKDq2) 327
Elon Musk: Creating wealth should be applauded.
“If one creates wealth or creates great products and services, that is something that should be applauded. It's effectively increasing the standard of living of the country and perhaps of the world. And sometimes, people think of consumption and wealth as the same thing, but they're obviously not the same thing.” Interview with Everyday Astronaut, May 26, 2022 _Occupy Mars Posted by: Braenyard - some absent friends are more equal than others at December 10, 2024 01:12 AM (ah1Jo) 328

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at December 10, 2024 01:21 No need to be sorry Deb, I prolly shall be sorry after posting this. Since Jules has been hospitalized for over a month I'm having problems w/ Flash, our 16 month old Gordon Setter. He's crate trained so at first he was fine being crated while I was gone. J was usually home all day with him. Now he has caught on that when I let him in he might be crated for several hrs. He has perfected this dance where he comes near me to go inside and then runs away. Over and over. It's after 1 am here, should I leave his sorry ass outside all night or go check on his stupid ass again? I'm not a Dem so voting times do have a closure time, say one hour from now. Extra treats when he must go into the crate? Posted by: JQ at December 10, 2024 02:41 Yes indeed, that's how I lure into the crate.
