"Person of Interest" In Health Care CEO Assassination Caught in Altoona, PA, Identified as Luigi Mangione, "Former Ivy League Student"
NYT: He Carried a Manifesto Decrying Health Care Corporations' Greed

Update: Luigi Mangione, a "former Ivy League student."

The person of interest identified in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is an anti-capitalist former Ivy League student -- who liked online quotes from "Unabomber'' Ted Kaczynski raging against the country's medical community.

Tech whiz Luigi Mangione, 26, of Towson, Md., was taken into custody Monday morning at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pa., after an intense manhunt following the coldblooded execution of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel last week, sources said.

He has not been charged.

The former prep-school valedictorian was caught with a manifesto that appeared to list grievances with the healthcare industry including taking on their enormous profits and alleged shady motives, sources said.

Update: Per Zero Hedge, he is now being called a "strong person of interest."

I mean, yes, it does seem nearly 100% likely it is this Ivy league leftwing radical terrorist.

Interesting detail: He was armed with a veterinary pistol, used for euthanizing animals, which looks like the gun he used.

Weird detail: He was caught using a fake ID at a McDonald's. Why would someone have to use an ID at McDonald's?

Not sure if this is our killer.

Actually, now that I re-read the story, I think someone called a tip on the guy, recognizing him from his photo. When the police showed up, he showed a fake ID and gave a false name.

The cops, presumably, used the fake ID as the reason to arrest him while they try to figure out if he's Taylor Lorenz's favorite boy band murderer.

A person of interest was nabbed Monday in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson -- busted possibly trying to use a fake ID in a McDonald's, law enforcement sources said.

Per Trusted Member of the Media LA Sue, the fake ID was spotted because the name on it was "McLovin."

The man -- who sources said is being eyed for the coldblooded, targeted execution in front of a Manhattan hotel last week -- allegedly had a manifesto on him when he was taken into custody by cops in Altoona, Pa.

He also had a gun, silencer, four fake IDs and other items "consistent" with what authorities were looking for in the case, sources said.

Law enforcement was still trying to figure out the man's real identity, sources said.

He was nabbed on a tip called in to local cops, who apprehended him, sources said.

The NYPD was on its way to Altoona late Monday morning, sources said.

Added by Black Orchid, not sure of the source but Black Orchid is not a Fake News Macedonian Content Farmer but instead a Trusted Member of the Media.

"The handwritten manifesto found on the person of the man detained in Altoona criticized health care companies for putting profits above care, according to a senior law enforcement official."

The claim comes from the New York Times, which is, unfortunately, a Fake News Macedonian Content Farmer.

73 OT - Israeli bombulization in Syria continues, now Syrian naval assets getting hit (not russkis, they're small squadron is out of port, either in the area, or gone). And military assets of former regime still getting hit elsewhere. One of those contingency plans gathering dust in the files finally being implemented. And US enlivening the day/night for ISIS-types in central Syria via precision-guided valentines. Main Kurdish militia going after main Turkish-backed militia, though to what extent unclear.

Ceasefire in Lebanon remains excellent, meaning Israelis are smoking Hezb targets daily, while Hezb holds what's left of its schlong in its hands. But the first meeting of the ceasefire commission was held! Never has US and French diplomacy been put to better use.

172 If the firearm was a Welrod/B&T type pistol, the current iteration is marketed as a veterinarian's pistol for PR purposes because it has obvious application to targeted assassinations. The bolt action means that the pistol creates little to no report from the action itself. So if you pair it with a suppressor and subsonic ammunition, the pistol will be very, very quiet. Like the kind of thing you would use to ambush a target from behind and dispatch with one shot.

Interesting detail: He was armed with a veterinary pistol, used for euthanizing animals, which looks like the gun he used.

Almost certainly a B&T single-shot vet pistol, which incidentally, is basically a modernized Welrod. Ian at Forgotten Weapons has an interesting video on the Welrod and B&T which he produced several years ago.

Pop culture tells young women they can ALL become CEO, and have kids if they want, and travel the world, and find Mr Right who is even more successful then they are and yet still has time to pamper her.

And many young women believe this. Few people that really dedicate themselves to their career will get to the C level (hell how many will get to be a director or something like that?) and that kind of dedication seriously reduces your time/ability to have and raise kids, travel, and find that Mr Right.

Interestingly enough, at this point there is no way to know for sure, necessarily. The database has so thoroughly corrupted, any identification and back story can be perfect.

Completely fictitious identities would be trivial at this point, invented out of whole cloth. It would stand up to any cursory inspection any how. I noticed that the Bosnian immigrants first generation children looked and acted perfectly as an American accent as you’d find, for example. I mean, the Soviets would have wanted Wipepo who could pass, the Balkans are it.

They even let their kids do weirdo stuff like riding bikes and playing outside, adding to the effect. Set your watch back 50 years.

317 Still sticking to my original thought that this guy is an ex-employee that got laid off. UnitedHealthcare 86'd A LOT of employees over the last year and a half, and did it rather sneakily. They, also, ditched a lot of subsidiary companies that were primarily focused on virtual treatment meant to provide care to those who didn't usually have access. It was algorithm based and supposed to be the new thing...it wasn't. There are a couple such companies out near Altoona btw.

Ask yourself one simple question. How would someone know that UnitedHealthcare was meeting in NYC. Then, ask, how would someone know what hotel to stake out. The meeting might have been publicized. The hotel used by the CEO probably not. There are more than a handful of hotels in Manhattan.

JUST IN: The person of interest in the UnitedHealthcare CEO execution has been ID'd as Luigi Mangione, a former Ivy League student and activist.

Mangione is described as a "tech whiz" and was a former valedictorian.

Mangione is an anti-capitalist 26-year-old who shared quotes online from "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski.

"Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy then gives them the drugs to take away their unhappiness," a Kaczynski quote liked by Mangione read.

"Science fiction It is already happening to some extent in our own society. Instead of removing the conditions that make people depressed modern society gives them antidepressant drugs."

"In effect, antidepressants are a means of modifying an individual’s internal state in such a way as to enable him to tolerate social conditions that he would otherwise find intolerable."

Mangione studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He was valedictorian of his 2016 graduating class at the Gilman School in Baltimore, according to the New York Post.

I knew a guy who used to make drug runs. They really did take a variety of precautions to try to avoid being pulled over, but if you live/operate in certain areas, the cops know your car, and will pull you over no matter what.

He said they would bundle their stash in such a way, tightly wrapped, so they could zip around a corner, toss the goods, let the cop search as long as they like, and then come back sometime later and retrieve the package, which has presumably not been found by the cops or anyone else.

Am I permitted to doubt that many actual practicing veterinarians would go to the trouble (tax stamps) and expense ($2100) to own a VP9? And how many collectors who did buy one legally would allow it to fall into the hands of a nut bent on murder? Have there been any reports of such guns being stolen recently?

My money is on a pawn-shop 9 mm, fitted by the perp with a home-made suppressor. He got it to work well enough to do the job he intended it to do.

Posted by: AltonJackson at December 09, 2024 01:46 PM (w9Ycv)

Not necessarily "by hand" but it should show manifester's intent.

Manifesto is related to manifest, which occurs in English as a noun, verb, and adjective. Of these, the adjective, which means "readily perceived by the senses," is oldest, dating to the 14th century. Both manifest and manifesto derive ultimately from the Latin noun manus ("hand") and -festus, a combining form of uncertain meaning that is also found in the Latin adjective infestus ("hostile"), an ancestor of the English infest. Something that is manifest is easy to perceive or recognize, and a manifesto is a statement in which someone makes his or her intentions or views easy for people to ascertain. - MW

The standard for detaining someone is "reasonable suspicion", not "probable cause." And, "you like like the guy who is the subject of a national manhunt" is definitely reasonable suspicion.

No, and there may not be.

That said, different crimes have different elements. It's possible a lone juror was really hung up on the "reasonable man" standard. I haven't looked at the pattern jury instructions for the charges he faced, but some people take jury duty VERY seriously (as they should) and maybe that's all it was.

TBH a lot of the drive, good and ill, in society is over men trying to impress, and thereby "get" women.

Smart well structured societies try to point this drive towards constructive things. In Soviet America though fame has become one of the biggest drivers...

This system, he wrote, destroys nature and suppresses individual freedom. In short, humans adapt to machines rather than vice versa, resulting in a society hostile to human potential, freedom, and dignity.

Sometimes what one is thinking and/or feeling is to big, to intense, to scary to keep it locked inside. They need to get that outside of their head. Writing it down and reading it can ease that fear, that pressure. But if that person is completely fucked up and they act on the hatred/fear/helplessness then what they have written becomes a "manifesto". They may not consider it as such but others might.

Yep. This is why health insurance of the sort we have, AND government controlled health care are both absurd.

There is an almost infinite desire for healthcare. If "healthcare is a right" then you will eventually spend just about every dollars your society generates on healthcare.

So the common naive view is "someone" should pay for everyone's healthcare but, uh, not "me".

In my own experience as soon as a woman moves in that will change....of course having a hovel in the wood makes it rather unlikely you will get a woman to want to move in and fill your place with decorative pillows and "live laugh love" signs...

Nobody wants to be the guy who could never get a woman. Even if the relationship doesn't end up working out, you'd prefer that someone, somewhere, found you desirable.

Only in states with stop-and-ID laws is a person required to produce an ID or ID themselves verbally when being detained by law enforcement and instructed to do so.

Pennsylvania is not a stop-and-ID state.

Cops there can detain you based on their suspicions and can ask you to voluntarily provide them your ID, but you are under no legal obligation to comply.

If, however, you voluntarily agree to ID yourself and proceed to give them a fake name or fake ID, then you have committed a crime and are subject to arrest.

754 Possible explanation for the Penny verdicts (plural):

They all agreed he was innocent but didn't want to piss off the screaming mob and endanger their own lives, so they voted 10-2 for acquittal, hoping the judge would end the case without anyone being able to tell which of them voted to acquit. (Would the judge know what the vote count was? If so, would he have known who voted which way? My version works best if the answers are 'yes', then 'no'.)

But the stupid - or more likely vindictive asshole - judge forced them to vote again on the second charge, and they decided to man up and do what they didn't have the guts to do on the first count.

It's just a guess, but seems plausible to me.
