Well, here I am in the early morning with the other dear early risers and insomniacs .😊 I have two prayer requests, one of which I shared before.
My son, K, starts his new job today. It's a six month assignment but may be extended. He came to church yesterday and we prayed for him.. if you are a praying type, I'd appreciate your prayers. He's supposed to go tothe home of the young adult pastor of the evangelical church nearby which he's been attending and he likes the leader and members so that's a blessing. Thanks! The home nurse and aide for the "retired" elderly organist is in the hospital with GI bleeding and her EKGs have been showing abnormalities . She is a lovely person and we've become friends since my home visits ,or when she comes to church with our former organist. Her name is "E". Thanks so much! Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at December 09, 2024 04:55 AM (O7YUW) Imagine it. Fedgov goes ham promoting all this middle kingdom spy gear in the national grid thinking its a great way to install a backdoor on the cheap (or on the lazy, in so far as they're shopping with other people's money). Then when they go to ask the manufacturers for the back door key, all they hear is "LOLGF" in Chinese. So *now* it's a big problem we all have to care about. But all those internet cranks saying it's been a problem for years are still cranks because without evidence. Or something. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 09, 2024 05:18 AM (y/ZMQ) 48

The U.S. is spending $2 trillion more on healthcare than in 2010. Yet Americans aren’t healthier, as a new paper by the Paragon Health Institute observes. Mortality rates for 25- to 64-year-olds from major medical causes, such as hypertensive diseases, diabetes and neurologic conditions, climbed between 2009 and 2019
--------------- The WSJ writer Alyssia Finley makes the point ObamaCare, by nationalizing many health decisions and payment mechanisms, has caused massive deterioration of our national medical care. As an extra, the system has pissed people off to the point some people are cheering the shooting of a bureaucratic functionary at UnitedHealth, albeit a really highly paid one. I just had a colonoscopy a week ago and had to sign about thirty different times before they could do that simple thing. Posted by: Huck Follywood at December 09, 2024 05:41 AM (jGxgu) 62
In an honest accounting of the numbers, if such a thing were even possible anymore, I'd be willing to bet there's actually far less being spent on health care than there once was.
More on "healthcare", certainly. Massively. But less on health. See also: education, defense Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 09, 2024 05:47 AM (y/ZMQ) 63
If i pay a guy to pay a guy to pay a guy to go grocery shopping for me, and I'm obligated to do the same for two or three neighboring households as well, it might be technically true to say I'm spending more on groceries than ever before. True, but not very informative.

Once a box is installed and starts carrying traffic it's very difficult to replace with a different box. Not impossible buy lots of time and money that can be spent elsewhere.
I think the Fed incentivizing the replacements is a good idea. Just make sure the money isn't squandered in the usual management churn. There should be some Federal level task force pushing this but I'm sure the Chinese agents in DC will do their best to scuttle it. Maybe a Data Free National Holiday where everything is shut down like it would be during an actual and eventual attack would get peoples attention. Most folks take our data infrastructure for granted and don't know/care how fragile and pervasive it is. Posted by: pawn, RIP Vic at December 09, 2024 05:52 AM (QB+5g) 65

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is offence, let me bring pardon. Where there is discord, let me bring union. Where there is error, let me bring truth. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith. Where there is despair, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let me bring your light. Where there is sadness, let me bring joy. O Lord, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives, it is in self-forgetting that one finds, it is in forgiving that one is forgiven, it is in dying that one awakens to eternal life. The Constitution trumps any statutes or enforcement of same. The power of pardon granted to the President (Article Two, Section 2, Clause 1) has been held by the Courts to be very wide. The only thing explicitly excepted from a Presidential Pardon is cases of Impeachment. We may not like what's happening now with what Biden's doing with his power of pardon, but it's consistent with William Blackstone's ratio: "It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer."
