Amazing how we're expected to love snow and winter during this month, and then on 12/26 the media is instantly all about how long and brutal winter is. When I have my house I may put up some outdoor lights myself. As for a tree indoors, much as I'd love one, I dunno, considering the energy of the cats. It's strange to think I haven't put up a tree in years. When Linda and I lived together in Denver, I think we did something, but aside from that, I haven't done it since 1985. . . . Any words of wisdom or links to reference material? -- If you go with Mint (which is a great choice) it will default to a fairly absurd auto backup schedule during setup. This year we will have-as we have for many years- a towel rack for a tree. Sounds silly perhaps , but it is an old fashioned wood towel rack with an upright center and spiky bits sticking out. Why do we use it ? Because when he was about four son said looking at it , "it looks like a tree" so we put it up because it has a history and reminds of when our son was little.

Dad made a little "tree" out of tuna cans when I was little. Mom saw instructions in some women's magazine, and saved the cans (opened on both ends) and then Dad tacked them together. @15/JQ: 15 Ubuntu... Mint... I have heard of both. What's the difference?
Okay, I'm biased. I examined 20 different distributions + desktops to find the best one for people that used and liked Windows XP and Windows 7. It was Linux Mint I settled on, because paired with the Cinnamon Desktop, it fits the bill. Linux Mint has two other menu based desktops if you want to try them: Xfce or Mate (pronounced Mah-TAY). I've tried them, but I much prefer Cinnamon. Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop which to me seemed completely unfamiliar and non-intuitive. It was too much change for me coming from Windows. Also over the years I've learned that the Gnome team loves to keep changing things which drives the users nuts as well as programmers that depend on their API being stable. I just try to stay away from Gnome. Canonical (who makes the Ubuntu distribution) also likes to distribute software as "snaps" (via their "Snap" store.) Mint has completely rejected this for what I think are good reasons, and follows the "debian" way of updating using apt. This won't mean much to you now, but it may later. I'm hopping that with Trump as President, Gov Hochul of NYS will back off on her fossil free mandate by 2030-35 or so. No more new gas hookups and trucks must be all EV's and on and on. But I wouldn't hold my breath, she seems not to know the CO2 levels on the earth will make no difference what she mandates. Every 18 wheeler must be EV's, by some date not far off. The bottom line for me was that Linux Mint was appropriate for my elderly mother, and my wife to convert them away from Windows XP when it hit "end of life". It's been a really GOOD fit for them. The "familiar" factor was a huge thing for them, so I'm glad I went through the pain of looking at 20 separate distributions to find the one that would work out well for them. Also I've been super happy with the Linux Mint team's decisions and way of handling things. Mint is coordinated/headed by a man by the name of Clemente Lefebvre (aka "Clem".) Oliver Anthony put out a YT video that was interesting. I guess he's pretty much done with the music business and is going to do it his own way. The part of the video that had all the usual suspect clasping their pearls was when he slammed Beyonce's 'Country' album. Apparently, Oliver hates it. The entertainment religious leaders (Rolling Stone, Variety, etc)are screaming that he blasphemed Beyonce and must be burned at the stake!!!
He carefully explained the Nashville business and I understand why he bailed. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at December 06, 2024 07:18 AM (sAmhv) 183

Great start to our vacation visiting family in the Midwest. We've had freezing fog since Wednesday evening and the plane for our first flight didn't make it in last night for our 6:30am departure. Now flying out at 2:30pm and arriving at our final destination 8 hours late. I hate flying. At least United rebooked us and we didn't need to jump through hoops to reschedule like we did with the crowdstrike fiasco. That said these late night texts informing me that my flights are cancelled are growing old.

Another funny article about AI on TheVerg
https://tinyurl.com/52dd45hb If you go to Amazon, for instance, you’ll find a lot of posts with this as the product description: I’m sorry, but I cannot analyze or generate new product titles as it goes against OpenAI use policy, which includes avoiding any trademarked brand names. Because people are using ChatGPT to generate product descriptions but OpenAI doesn’t allow the use of brand names, I suspect most of these are Chinese sellers who don’t want to be bothered with learning english and don’t want to pay anybody who knows the language. I'm not seeing any of that here. Mostly it's blanket dismissal due to various rationalizations. Folks are going to have to adapt or be left in the dust. Because it's coming. Dear Daily Tech News -
I have a tech question. On Ace of Spades HQ (and on no other site I regularly visit), when I try to engage a link (generating a hand instead of an arrow), I can not do it on the bottom quarter of my screen. The top three quarters work fine. I am using Windows 10 Home on an Asus Sonic Master laptop with Firefox 132.0 64 bit. It is not a problem with Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or DuckDuckGo. I like Firefox, is there a setup parameter I am missing? Clueless Dave, Calgary, Alberta, Canada Posted by: Captain Dave at December 06, 2024 11:28 PM (SX5EB) 226
