Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Claim: Words Were Written on Assassin's Bullets -- "Deny," "Depose," and "Defend" -- Which Reference an Anti-Health-Care-Corporation BookLeftwing agitation never leads to violence, which is why the straight-shooters of the FBI focus all of their attention on 70-year-old grandmothers who posted tweets about the 2020 election being stolen. I wonder if they mean the shell casings had the words written on them. It seems unlikely these words would be written on bullets, or that the bullets would be intact enough to read these scratches as words.Police investigating the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson found engraved messages on bullets used in the killing. The words, eerily resembling a book title critical of the insurance industry, hint at a possible motive. Key Details: Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside the Midtown Hilton Hotel on December 4, 2024. NYPD recovered bullets and casings engraved with the words "deny," "depose," and "defend." The suspect used a silenced weapon, fled on an e-bike, and may have left a phone near the crime scene. Diving Deeper: UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was killed in what police are calling a "targeted" assassination outside a luxury Manhattan hotel early Wednesday morning. The 50-year-old executive was ambushed at close range by a masked gunman wielding a silenced firearm. The NYPD discovered a chilling clue among the evidence: live rounds and shell casings engraved with the words "deny," "depose," and "defend." These words closely align with the title of a 2010 book critical of the insurance industry, Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It. Thompson, who had been CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, was in town to host an investor conference. Surveillance footage shows the suspect waiting outside the Hilton Hotel before firing multiple shots at Thompson, striking his back and leg. The attack continued even as the victim attempted to crawl away. The assassin didn't have his mask on when he was caught on a videocamera at the youth hostel he was presumably staying in. The NYPD has released new photos of the gunman who shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, on Wednesday outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown. The new images show the suspect's face, which had previously been hidden behind a mask, with the gunman even seen flashing a smile. The photos were taken from an Upper West Side youth hostel where police believe he might have been staying at before the shooting. ![]() ![]() Tim PoolMaybe he just shared a room with the killer or something. But if he's an innocent, why does the NYPD have to put out his picture to find him? A non-criminal would presumably have checked into the hostel using, get this, his real name. America's Oldest Fake Teenager Taylor Lorenz -- who whines incessantly about online bullies sending her "death threats" and "hate" -- took zero time before celebrating the assassination as Righteous Kill. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She's now claiming she wasn't calling for the murders of executives when she justified the murders of executives. She was just a "reporter" "reporting" on the sentiment surrounding a story.

I don’t know about Health Insurance but I do know that casualty insurance companies generally pay out more in claims than they make in premiums. At one time when I worked for Liberty Mutual they were happy that we lowered the ratio to 1.14 to 1.0 of claims paid to premium received.

As we were discussing below, we have a nearly fully fascist business model of health care:
All the "health insurance" companies are merely administrators for ObamaCare. While there is technically "private" health care--all of them are minutely managed and regulated by the government. The health insurance companies spent billions in lobbying to pass--and keep--ObamaCare. Because being the pass-through administrator of 1/6 of the US economy is insanely profitable. But you'll never, ever, ever convince the left of any actual facts about health care in this country. They won't even let go of the completely debunked, discredited, absolutely false, and ridiculous "study" by Warren that claimed 1/5 of bankruptcies were due to medical expense. And a movie from the same time period, 1949, Holiday Affair. It's a rom-com, from what I dimly recall from the Late Show. By the way the "problem with healthcare in America" is stupidly simple - most people want everything free or at a nominal cost and in turn don't want to pay for the bills that come with that.
Health insurance, as currently implemented is not insurance, it is a health care payment pool. And for every expensive treatment someone in the pool gets every has to pay more - those miracle AIDS drugs and "gender affirming surgery" aren't cheap. The most direct solution is to ban insurance of this type. Allow catastrophic which would cover you if you get cancer or in a car accident, but you'd have to personally pay for your physical/blood work/etc. The "problem" with that is the FNM would go nuts with every sad sack story they could find of someone not being able to pay to get zer dick cut off. I don't think we are going to like how this turns out. There are a number of things that stick out. First, the book title. That's a standard reference book available anywhere and often used by people have had claims denied for various reasons. It's not an apparatchik material glorified by ANTIFA.
Secondly, the assassin seems sufficiently versed in fire arms (at least moderately so). He appears to be in relatively good shape. His demeanor suggests the ability to function under pressure. His planning and adherence to his planning suggest a well thought out exercise. Finally, UnitedHealthcare has an offshoot that deals with Veterans, discharged Veterans and retired Veterans. The flood. Sodom and Gomorrah. The command to kill all the inhabitants of a land. God really inflicting pain on Egypt and the like. But these last few years have changed my mind. It's now quite easy to see how God might just do a SMOD of flooding. Or some cultures of death just need to be exterminated. Were there a few good people? Yeah, probably. But God is the god of quick and dead, so He can spare the few good ones. And some societies like Sodom... He explicitly said find me ten good people and I won't do it. No one could find the ten good people. So God burning the world soon? Totally plausible. Posted by: SimoHayha at December 05, 2024 12:34 PM (yf7Pm) 177

There's obviously more to come with this story, and a murder on a busy street is also obviously not the way in a civilized society to solve something like this (did the shooter consider the poor woman who was standing by the door when he opened fire and ran away and will probably have PTSD all her life?), but I don't the amount of sympathy for the victim on the Right is going to be quite as high as some people would expect. We already have seen that Big Corp are not our friends, and the insurance/hospital complex might be some of the most egregious purveyors of waste and graft out there, as is coming out with the news the UNH was under investigation for insider trading. Some of the critiques on healthcare from the Left aren't all that different than what RFK Jr has said. I dunno, all I'm saying is after the last four years, I'm not entirely ready to dismiss any argument against the current joke of healthcare we have in the US. That doesn't mean I want socialized medicine or executives executed in the street, but something needs to change. You can condemn the act while understanding the motivation.

Private insurance is screwed up because the government has been massively interfering with the industry for years. They have been forcing them to cover every single aspect of your medical care and some non-medical care as well. This drives prices Sky High.
My dad was in the business his entire working life and he would always rant that insurance is supposed to cover Major Medical situations like getting cancer or being in a car wreck or having to go to the emergency room for a broken bone. It used to be affordable. Once the government started ordering the companies to pay for things like regular checkups and chiropractic and every other thing, the prices went through the roof and the insurance companies are not their own masters. This of course is the deliberate big push to force everyone into the socialized medicine concentration camp from which there will be no escape from the government power over your physical life. So you can't blame the CEOs of the private companies for most of this mess. Posted by: Beverly at December 05, 2024 12:50 PM (Epeb0) 288

I had United for a while. Not long. They denied every claim at first, until I made a stink and offered to get them in touch with my lawyer (which I didn't have, but they didn't know that). The time and trouble it took to have them pay was not worth the slightly lower premiums. Now I have BCBS, and while they generally take several months to approve various procedures, usually well past the time I have had the procedure, they do, in fact, pay the claims. People forget that insurance companies are in the business of making money, not handing it out, and they will do just about anything to pay the dividend to their shareholders before indulging every whim of their "customers."

I dunno. There is probably a justifiable amount of loathing for the health care industry, both hospitals and insurers. In the end, the average person gets caught in the middle of their cobra dance. The hospitals overcharge for services, and dump the costs of the uninsured and non-citizens on their patients. After COVID a lot of the nurses unions used that event as a means to get raises and put hospitals further in the red. Because they’re totes on your side. The insurance companies then deny and delay as a means of maximizing their profits. Don’t forget that companies like Aetna also own CVS so they get a taste at every juncture. The regulators have been in bed with both, and are simultaneously being pushed by the free shit crowd into socialized medicine. That said, murder doesn’t seem to be the solution. You know, if we’re going to take the moral high ground and fix things. But that’s just me.

First, murdering people is never an option but the state of Healthcare in this country is horrendous. If anything hopefully this brings up discussions on how to fix things.
Some of the major issues facing "healthcare" in this country: 1. We pay for a LOT of medical research which the rest of the world, basically, steals. 2. A significant fraction of our healthcare system cares for people who pay nothing and treat emergency rooms as regular doctor visits. 3. Government payment systems (medicare, etc.) pay a percentage of the commercial rate which leads to inflating the commercial rate. 4. Too much government intrusion, generally, means added layers of administration. If you want to fix US healthcare, start with #2. They make their money on investment of the premium dollar.
Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth That's generally true of all insurance companies. They maintain a certain cash "on hand" float to pay out claims, and the rest is invested. The reason they fight claims is to maintain that "float" of cash for as long as possible, before drawing more cash out of their investment yields. I don't like the way insurance companies generally work, but it would only be a lot worse if the government ran "single payer". Because when the annual budget for Single payer runs out, you get put on a waiting list. Don't get sick in November or December in a Single Payer country, because likely the money ran out by then. Would this bring down prices enough to make medical care more affordable? Why does the government only pay a percentage of what the commercial rate is? My sister was an auditor for a hospital and the government always wanted the most detailed list of item costs. She said they were a pain to deal with but maybe if everyone demanded the same level of transparency costs would go down? You guys are ignoring just how much CEOs like him earn in their lifetimes, and how many insurance instruments cover them. Thompson had $43 million in UHC stock and $21 million in options. For someone like that, a $10 million life insurance policy is boring and standard. People have to read their insurance plans.
Insurance claims are a problem if the user goes outside the provider network, i.e., How does out-of-network reimbursement work? Insurance companies usually cover less of the cost of an out-of-network provider. For example, you might have to pay a $25 copay if you see an in-network provider but a $35 copay if you see an out-of-network provider. Insurance companies do not usually reimburse you based on the amount you actually paid your provider. -- Many times, anesthetists for surgical procedures are not within the users insurance plan. That results in much higher out-of-pocket costs. If it's not a true medical emergency, the user needs to contact his/her insurance company and see how to manage costs. I've paid out of pocket thousands of dollars - most upfront - for a medication in lieu of going on a specific diet for sometime to check thyroid levels (following removal of thyroid), for radioactive iodine therapy and towards anesthetics for non-emergency surgery. So they are saying that the pistol did not jam! It's a Welrod, bolt action. He was manually cycling the bolt for each shot. This is to avoid the noise of a standard automatic cycling after a round is fired. This coupled with a good suppressor and subsonic rounds makes the gun very quiet.

If we concede any professionalism to the killer, the most important part of an operation is the safe exfiltration and muddying of the water to delay pursuit... If we concede also an antifa angle, I would be concerned that the Person of interest may have been socially engaged to provide cover. If I had to guess, if she's not up to her neck in it, she is likely dead and may be found in a couple of days. By then, the shooter could be in Bora-Bora.
