  • As expected, Intel's second-generation "Battlemage" graphics cards are here. (Tom's Hardware)

    The B580 comes with 12GB of VRAM and costs $249, while the B570 comes with 10GB and costs $219.

    The B580 will be on sale next week, while the B570 will wait until next month, though for $30 you might as well go with the faster model.

    Intel has released a lot of updates for it's graphics drivers since the rather shaky launch of the previous generation "Alchemist" cards and now looks like a viable alternative to Nvidia or AMD at the low end.

5 South Korea has replaced 10% of its workforce with robots. (The Business Standard)

SK's birthrate is so far below replacement that it makes the rest of the industrialized world look like sexual T-Rexes. It's gonna need a lot more robots than 10% of its workforce.

23 Cantique de Jean Racine. Gabriel Faure. 1865. Not specifically Christmassy, but also is.

The lyrics (sung in French) translated:
Word of the Highest, our only hope,
Eternal day of earth and the heavens,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!

Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace,
That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice;
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of your laws!

O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people
Now gathered here to praise you;
Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory;
May they go forth filled with your gifts.

39 As expected, Intel's second-generation "Battlemage" graphics cards are here. (Tom's Hardware)

--

I had one of the previous gen Intel Arc cards, the top of the line at the time *70 (don't remember exactly). It was outstanding and I would not hesitate to recommend one for people who are slightly technical minded and patient with a hiccup here and there. Drivers were steadily rolled out and it would play games great, up to and including Cyberpunk.

It seems like more of a value when you think about the "Oh, but Nvidia has better support" argument when they just admitted that bad actors could have had access to your system for who knows how long (since inception of the 40XX cards?) until they patched their GPUs with their most recent driver update.

Where the high school is located where I grew up used to be all coal mines. The whole area was underground mines, that have been filled in now. Probably. Hasn't happened in a while but when I was living there, I recall seeing these holes in the woods that were mine shafts. Now, that area is all large, nice, homes. Built over coal mines that are, probably, filled in. Probably won't collapse. Probably.

People need to know that yes, character does matter.

96 Beautiful. If I had to rank the old masters, I would probably go:
1) Bach
2) Beethoven
3) Mozart

But they are all so close that I would hate to have to live with the difference. To me though, Bach and Beethoven pull ahead of Mozart. I dunno.
Posted by: Aetius451AD

Beethoven is number one for me. In particular, the last four piano sonatas are my favorite works by him. At that time he was deaf and in failing health and still continued to work. Those pieces are architected to the nth degree transcend all that and become completely free. To me they strike me as Beethoven meditating about eternity.

134 Very nice. Do you find yourself locking in on specific performances of a given song?

Absolutely. The bulk of my listening by far is 20th century American music, and while I'm not an expert on it, I know a thing or two about a thing or two such as doing various performances of pieces over the decades. And yes, there are some that are off the charts excellent while others are just pedestrian. Gaining this understanding take some time, but once you crack the code of what makes a great performance, you instantly understand it when you bump into it in other places.

One of the greatest rock and roll performances of all time is the Beatles with John Lennon singing Twist and Shout. In the classical realm, one that does it for me is Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1970s performing Beethoven's 9th Symphony. When music is well internalized by the performers something profound happens: The poetry of sound emerges.

It's kind of hilarious how "supermodel" is no longer a viable career path. Models, especially runway models, are completely dehumanized interchangeable cogs. The only job requirements are looking a little weird naturally, and being willing to debase yourself by wearing the most absurd nonsense they can staple to you or glue on your face. There are no models who are household names anymore. Even designers and design houses have lost any cultural relevance they once may have had. The fashion industry went full retard.

Arrogance on the part of the actors, stupidity on the part of the entire industry, and the explosion of other entertainment options is to blame.

Modeling, on the other hand, is almost exclusively the determination of advertisers/fashion people to denigrate beauty.

252 I like Bach- not only for his stellar musical talent /but because he was a church organist for so many years and I have affection for church organists.

Bach is my favorite composer, followed by Beethoven and Sullivan (yes, he wrote more than just the Savoy Operas).

And I've begun reading the Bach mystery that was highlighted on the last book thread - The Organ Job. It's interesting, though not written in a style I expected. I'll have more to say about it on Sunday.

253 Will DeSantis leave Florida to become Sec Def?
Posted by: Ben Had

I think he is term limited and will be panhandling come 2026. DOD Sec. beats that It could be a big head start for the 2028 election. As far as hegseth goes, Trump has to make a choice If fighting a scorched earth confirmation battle, because that's what it will be, is worth it. Nominating DeSantis makes a lot of sense provided DeSantis wants the job.

254 Kos, of Daily Kos, is worried sick over inflation coming from Trump deporting illegals. A mind bender of an article.

Maybe the new AG could audit the ones that took more than one day to count?
Posted by: Ciampino - no chads, we're British

Maybe we need Congress to draft and pass a new Voting Rights Act that puts every state that had such difficulty conducting an open and free election and then counted the votes in a dawdling manner under feral scrutiny. Fines and jail time for state and local officials who could not master rapid kindergarten level counting. It's not like there isn't an example of whether that is possible already in place.

256 Wonderful site you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics
discussed in this article? I'd really love to be a part of
online community where I can get feed-back from other knowledgeable individuals that share the same interest.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
Cheers!

257 Remember in the first half of Biden's one-and-done administration when the country faced a computer chip crisis so severe that Congress had to throw more than a quarter of a trillion dollars at it? That's $280 billion to you and me and generations down the road.

One recipient of that emergency aid, Microchip Technology, decided to forgo its $162 million share of Biden's industrial-scale slush funds. "I have put the negotiations with the CHIPS office on hold for now," said CEO Steve Sanghi at a UBS conference, according to a Bloomberg report this week. "Probably, by the time I get my arms around it, we're into the new administration."

"The grant was applied to maybe almost a year ago when everybody thought that the factory capacity was never enough, and the world was gonna build silicon fabs forever," Sanghi continued. "Today, we have too much capacity."

Why, it's almost as though businesses respond to changing market conditions faster than government does.
