  • The most valuable gemstone on Earth is not blue diamond, or Padparadscha sapphire, or imperial jadeite. It's a little-known mineral called kyawthuite. (ScienceAlert)

Composed of an unusual formulation of bismuth antimonite and formed in cooling magma flows, it gets its value from its scarcity.

There's exactly one stone, and it's less than a quarter of an inch long.

4 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers! 'Tis Monday, and a particularly hard one, as we have to go back to work after 4-5 days off. Still, the old adage (mine) holds:

"Compared to being on the wrong side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?"

6 No doubt China is working on a way to make a synthetic version of this incredibly rare stone.

'Tis 52 F. here, and I am trying to motivate myself to go work out. Not because it's all that cold, but because I am lazy at this hour, and working out requires kicking myself into it.

Miss Linda dragged me to a local Christmas parade last evening. It was her b'day, so I said okay. And it wasn't bad. Mostly some dance teams and cheerleaders from a couple of local schools, and a stream of Jeep owners who had tricked out their vehicles with flashing and animated lights and shatteringly loud stereos. The owners wore Santa or Grinch costumes as they drove past , and their passengers threw toys and Tootsie Roll minis to us.

11 I've been getting bumped from commenting on group texts on my iPhone. I can see all the new texts in the chain coming in, but can't comment. The group has to add me back, which opens a new chain and now there's two... first world problems, sigh.

I thought my phone was just being dumb, but apparently other iPhone users are dealing with it too. Might be connected to one of the newer software upgrades.

Morning, JQ. I have to admit, I was impressed with the look of the Jeeps, which I never have been before. I mean, a moderate-sized one with decent-sized wheels and tires would sit higher off the ground, which is useful in floods, and four- or all-wheel drive would be useful for getting started in snow or mud or slush.

I heard they are not cheap, even used, and not all that reliable, so there's that.

13 When I was with XH in Japan, he bought a Mitsubishi-built Jap Military Jeep, CJ3B body style. It was a blast! And cold, very cold in winter, as it was a rag-top.

Yeah, he insisted on importing it and I did all the paperwork for EPA exemption and DOT compliance... it was built in '68, so not *too* difficult.

Worst was deciphering the original title. It was in Kanji/Katakana.

14 How should we treat beings that might be sentient?

Great, the left has come up with a new climate change substitute.

Are animals sentient? Of course they are. Have you ever asked a dog if they want steak? They always say yes. This does not apply to Chihuahuas which clearly are brain dead as burnt firewood though they somehow manage to be insane.

There's a James Bond story in there using this premise, I just know it. The stone does something cool, and 007 has to save it from falling into the hands of a supervillain.

19 Wolfus, I don't believe the newer Jeeps are any more or less reliable than any other modern vehicle.

Of course, the most "modern" Jeep I've ever owned was a '62 Willys wagon. LOL. It had a Buick V6 and Muncie 4speed manual, no more 4wd.

I just got rid of a 2016 Jeep product and I can guarantee you anything coming out of Chrysler, now part of Stellantis, over the last few decades can be a complete shit show. 32 The best Jeep I ever owned was a 1971 international Scout. It made no pretense about being reliable, easy to get parts for, easy to work on, got ridiculously bad gas mileage, was literally the worst car on the planet to drive, was too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, and the vacuum driven windshield wipers were something to behold.

Without a doubt, that is my all-time favorite car I have owned and I wish I never sold it. I so loved owning that damn thing. It was less a mechanical thing and more of an unholy demon that was out to steal my soul. It may have succeeded.

42 The curious thing about this Biden pardon is it covers all criminal activity beginning on January, 1 2014. Hunter Biden joined the Burisma board in May of 2014. This pardon has very little to do the gun violation and and not paying taxes and has everything to do with the Biden crime syndicate when Joe Biden was vice president.

60 The Hunter news...Biden's gotta Biden. And the Fredo of the Bidens once again gets daddy to bail him out.

I still don't understand why Biden didn't pardon him going all the way back to Jan. 2009, when Biden started doing shady deals as VP. I get the Burisma stuff, but it still seems weird. Also, pardons are just for federal crimes, state crimes like state income tax fraud could still be charged later, yes? Or, just wait. No way Hunter is sober and vice free. Something new will pop up after daddy leaves office.

187 The best thing about the Kash Patel nomination is that when the Dems in the Senate start to oppose him vigorously, and they will, Kash or Trump can say:

“What’s the problem? You guys don’t like brown people or something?”

Fingers crossed.

188 MI daughter sent her Nanna a phone video of her two singing "Happy Birthday".
They were so bundled up all you could see were their little faces. And they were standing on snow.
New experiences for them.

190 Sunrise was two minutes ago.

So we should see another small dip in temps.

Followed by a strong rise in temps about 20 minutes from now.

191 An article says that the UK has banned "new" gas cars by 2030. WTF? The UK is crazy. Brexit suggested they were coming back to reality, but nope. I'm kind of surprised that the sharia folks are down with the whole environmental crazy, but marxism is marxism I suppose.

They held the Brexit vote because the UK uniparty thought it would be voted down. Once it passed, they basically ignored it. Once they went through with it, the deliberately ignored the most important thing to voters (stop the fucking migrants) and screwed up as much as possible to punish the voters. Then the voters decided that the Tories sucked (true) so they'd give Labour a shot. They're so very entirely fucked.

194 When I was a kid in the 50's, my dad owned a 49 Lincoln Cosmopolitan. It had hydraulic windows. You wanted them to work because it was Houston TX and there was no air conditioning in the black car. However, you had to be careful with them because they were so powerful that when they worked they would make the glass explode if there was anything, like a tree branch etc. in the window when you tried to close it. They mostly leaked and didn't work. Idiot idea: expensive, rarely worked, and dangerous.

49 Lincolns were the fastest American cars available when new: they had a 150 hp flat head V-8, and won all the stock car races. Hence the song Hot Rod Lincoln.

195 Intel CEO Pet Gelsinger Retires, Stocks Jumps

196 If only he had listened to us then, the once-iconic chipmaker would have been in a far better place today, and the outcome would still be the same because early on Monday Intel reported that Pat Gelsinger fired himself, when he and retired from the company and stepped down from its board of directors just as the company is in the middle of trying to execute on a turnaround plan.

Intel CFO David Zinsner and Intel Products CEO Michelle Johnston Holthaus are serving as interim co-CEOs while the board searches for Gelsinger’s replacement, the company said in a statement. Frank Yeary, independent chair of the board of Intel, will serve as interim executive chair.

197 >Programming using a programming language is going to work out better

This makes the rather bold assumption that Ruby is a programming language.

Everything - and I mean *everything* - that Node.js has f*cked up about programming originated with Ruby. I could take Zed Shaw's infamous "Rails is a Ghetto" essay and s/Rails/Node/g without any loss of accuracy.
