Sunday Overnight Open Thread (12/1/24) - Doof

doof-clauscycle.JPG

Howdy Hordelings, and welcome to December! Thanks for stopping the Sunday ONT. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and the whole month of November are now in the rear view mirror. Shall we cruise on into the last month of the year and get into the holiday spirit?

****

Christmas Light Displays

Which of you Hordelings did this?

****

Be careful out there! Hanging Christmas lights can be dangerous.
California worker dies while hanging Christmas lights on home in freak accident

Antonio Pascual Mateo was hanging lights on the property and around a tree outside a client’s home in Escondido, Calif. when he threw the string of lights over a powerline.
The lights touched the live wire and created a circuit that caused electricity to flow, electrocuting the 24-year-old worker, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
First responders found Mateo hanging upside down from the tree, where he remained stuck for an hour while they were forced to wait for San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to cut off the power so they could rescue the man.

What The Season Is All About

In the classic TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, Linus recites words from the Gospel of Luke, beginning with: “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy…” Biblical scholars tell us that Luke was a physician, and his Gospel tells the story of the life of Jesus with focus on His care for people. A good way to wake up on Christmas day with a better understanding of who Christians celebrate that day is through the 24 Day Gospel of Luke Challenge.
Reading through the Gospel of Luke in December

For Christians, the season of Advent is all about looking back and looking forward at the same time. We look back to remember what Christ accomplished for us through His miraculous incarnation, and we also join with all the saints from the early Church until now in anticipation of His promised Second Coming.
If you’re looking for a focused way to prepare your heart this Advent season, try reading through the book of Luke, 1 chapter per day. If you start with chapter 1 on December 1st, you will finish the final chapter on December 24th, Christmas Eve, at which point you will have recounted through the entire life of Jesus—His birth, death and resurrection, and will hopefully be reminded of exactly why we celebrate this special time.

****

December is also time for Jews to celebrate The Miracle of Chanukah

Chanukah was a miraculous military victory, but a tiny cruse of oil proved more miraculous and enduring in the memory of the Jewish people.
The Talmud does not say much about Chanukah. There are perhaps forty lines spread out in different volumes, whereas almost all the other holidays have an entire Talmudic volume about them. In addition, the few words the Talmud has to say about Chanukah are cryptic. Perhaps that is why Chanukah has been subject to reinterpretation, as it has been in our time. People make whatever they want to make out of it. However, that is a mistake, a tragedy.

31 The simplest explanation is usually the correct one:

The pardon was already written before Joetato pulled out of the election. He ordered it released now because Hunter's sentencing is supposed to happen at the end of the month, per @HansMahncke.

34 18-1, from reading the "marco polo" laptop report (which I should not have done) several family members suspected that Hunter was being "inappropriate" with his niece who was 13 years old. Some of them are licensed therapists so are required to report when there is a suspicion. Unless apparently the last name rhymes with "by Don".

39 From Burisma bribery to raping underage girls there are a bunch of more serious changes that can and I hope will be brought.

It was a blanket Federal pardon for any and all acts Hunter committed for the last eleven years.

Only two ways around it - one: bring Hunter up on state charges somewhere.

Two: the pardon is only good through today.

Wait until Joe's out of office, subpoena Hunter to appear before some Congressional committee in a red state.

He can no longer plead the Fifth, and he can be jailed if he refuses to appear.

Nope, pardons don't work like that.

FWIW from Wiki;

Although it is not an official holiday, most companies voluntarily designate a holiday from December 29 to January 3, or, depending on the industry, from Christmas Eve to January 5.

So yeah having a party on the 24th would be weird even for the Japanese.

82 Is it possible the NFA could be ruled unconstitutional? Yes it is. Why? The powers granted the government in the main body of the Constitution can't be used to modify or over rule ANY of the Bill of Rights, because the Bill of Rights followed and modifies the main body powers. If that were not true the Interstate Commerce clause could be used to revoke 1st amendment rights. However that "Congress shall pass no law" in the 1A over rules all of the power granting clauses in the main body.

In other words because the "shall not be infringed" clause in the 2A, limits the main bod power granting clauses even more than the 1A restriction does, CONGRESS NEVER HAD THE LEGAL AUTHORITY TO WRITE THE NFA IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I once got a parking ticket in Grand Teton National Park - it was about -30, and I had failed to notice the snow covered "NO PARKING" sign in that corner of the otherwise empty parking lot.

The parking ticket was made out to me, and gave my home address in California, just in case I was thinking of skipping out on it.

The ticket indicated that I could appeal the parking ticket to the Federal court in Jackson.

I thought of writing a letter to the Park Superintendent praising his park ranger for getting out of his nice warm car in the ungodly cold to write me a ticket.

I need to ask cat people a question.

Our friends cats, Trumpy and Snowflake, are staying with us. We're cat sitting in the new year but have had the cats in our house for 2 months because I didn't want them to adapt in Canadian January.

The Horde has helped me so much. Thank you.

We had weather change in my part of Canada. The tropical part of Canada. Holy crap, we hit freezing and had a dusting of snow!

AOP laughs.

Both cats are staying outside a lot less. Trumpy goes outside a bit but wants to stay inside. His sister, and maybe lover before the fixing, Snowflake goes outside, even for an hour but comes when I call.

Anyways, Trumpy seems lethargic the last several days. I looked online. New house....he's been here 2 months and the cats have free reign.

Stress and anxiety. He's only 10.8 pounds, doesn't want to stay out in the cold. But he's used to being outside. Snowflake is 8.8 pounds but will venture out. But not too long.

Trumpy is eating. Drinking. He's just lethargic. Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey there! Wasn’t he recently neutered? Once everything works through his system, a neutered kitty becomes far less insane than an intact one. He will play and have moments of zoomies, but it chills them out a bit. I wonder if that is what you are seeing? Cats really aren’t made for cold weather. If they go out, they need shelter and even a heated blanket. If you can keep them inside, they will be better for it. If you have a litter box, you can monitor output as well as input to ensure he didn’t eat something that disagrees with him or has a blockage.

It will probably depend on Joe's "promise" to make the transition as smooth as possible. What I'm seeing is Trump putting people in charge of the departments who are so obnoxious to the permanent residents of the administrative state that they'll devote their precious moments fighting the cabinet officers instead of focusing on undermining the president. At least, that's the hope. Hunter is a nothing burger compared to the entrenched power.

124 Stateless, my outdoor Cat is spending more time indoors, too. No snow (yet) but it's 20s-30s at night & 30s-40s daytime...

I think he's bored. Cat seems restless sometimes, looking for trouble but can't find any so naps instead.

Posted by: JQ at December 01, 2024 10:33 PM (YoCnN)

For a cat who is not our cat, he has a lot of stuff here.

But I think you're right. He's used to being outside watching things. We have cat trees and tables by the windows. Lots of toys. But it's not outside.

He keeps getting offered outside, but passes.

I think it's an adjustment thing.

Thank you.

Yeah, I kind of think Trumpy's dealing with a lot.

Indoor cat a new house...low level. He's been here two months, they don't destroy things, they have free reign, even when the cats have the zoomies at 4 am and I hear them chasing each other around

But I do take him in my room, close the door so he can sleep without his sister bothering him. He's comfortable with that. House not the problen.

I think weather changes plus cats!!

255 I hear ya. Lying on yer back on cold concrete shop floor ain't a fun way to work on a vehicle (in the winter), but it does beat my memory of removing an oil filter with a chisel and a screwdriver in an apartment complex parking lot in the snow 'cause the previous owner didn't lube the gasket....or at least that's how I remember it. Gotta change the oil in the 2009 Yukon XL tomorrow and hearing a noise like u-joints as well....but at 235000, I guess I should expect that.
Posted by: Don in SoCo at December 01, 2024 11:07 PM (vd6bO)

Fortunately, I was not on my back! I have a hoist in the shop, and I was able to raise the 'burb to have standing headroom under the chassis. Getting the driveshaft out was a piece of cake. And I am real pleased to find an obviously bad U-joint, because that explains the noise and about rules out any problems with the differential and/or transfer case. But I will check fluid level in both while it is up there. Because easy.

These are the real crimes of Hunter and Joe Biden are the money laundering and selling foreign influence to then VP Joe Biden (and that’s not including the underage girls on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

The crimes they charged Hunter with that Joe Biden pardoned were the tip of the iceberg.

In 2009, Joe Biden became VP.

Between 2009 and 2017, Hunter Biden and his “business partners” opened 15 companies. None of those companies produced one product or sold one service. There are no invoices, no accounting records, no expenses.

Side note: Where are the tax returns for these companies?

These companies received:
- 3 million from Romania
- 6.5 million from Ukraine
- 8 million dollars from China
- 3.5 million from Russia

Every company was opened after Joe Biden became VP of the United States.

What goods or services did Hallie Biden, Hunter Biden, and James Biden provide to those 4 countries that allowed them to earn 21 million dollars in 8 years?

Besides money laundering and selling their only asset Joe Biden?

Just read something interesting about why Joey Shitpants pardoned Hunter so soon, rather than waiting until the last day or so, as is usual for shitty pardons.

This short circuits some "pre-sentencing investigation" that federal courts do. Don't know much about that, but apparently Joe didn't want that done.

The pardon power is plenary for federal crimes. POTUS can't pardon for state crimes.

And he can pardon himself. The only thing it doesn't extend to is *future* crimes. POTUS can't give someone or himself a blank check.

And it doesn't have to be actual charged, indicted crimes either, anything in the past, known or unknown, and Hunter got such a blanket pardon. The only thing is the time limit going back.

The president's power to pardon is not restricted by any temporal constraints except that the crime must have been committed. To pardon a family member who has not been charged or even indicted would be considered a presumptive pardon. Same as admitting guilt. The only presumptive pardon granted was Ford's pardon of Nixon. To pardon Jimmy, Hayley or any of the others is a slippery slope. It is definitely an area that could be challenged.

Get rid of all French influences as to design and engineering.

Everything weird and ugly about Nissan (Juke, Cube, etc.), came out of those French design studios. Remember the late 90s/early aughts Altima, with the narrow, longitudinal "sunroof"? French.

I am not current with Nissan's state of engineering. But Mazda has surpassed them on Reliability Ratings. Mazda is now up with Toyota and Honda. Nissan, ain't.

Nissan gets any "cheaper" in execution, they'll be down with Mitsubishi in the "also ran" sweepstakes.

Ukraine is the most corrupt country in Europe, hands down (or hand out for a bribe). We lost a lot of war materiel bugging out of Afghanistan, too. Trump's re-arrival may just be in the nick of time. Still 7 weeks to go for whomever is running the country.

Leaning back into my former academic career, I agree with your perception of the Crimean War. The end goals, apart from preventing the Russian Empire gaining a warm water port, were extremely ill-defined. The near-senile Brit commander, Lord Raglan, had to be constantly reminded that the enemy were Russian, not French, and the scale of his military knowledge had not developed further than the end of his previous service in the Napoleonic Wars in 1815.

One of the few good outcomes of the conflict, apart from the beginning of nursing as a profession, was that the Royal Army undertook an investigation into the competency of their officer class, and as a result the purchasing of commissions was eased out and institutions like Sandhurst came into being. I should add that many believe the PM and the Cabinet were drunk when they decided to sign off on the entire effort.

Appoints Jared's skeevy father (Charles Kushner) as ambassador to France.

Pardoning him was a mistake during his first term - listening to Jared Kushner on anything (ran Trump's re-election campaign
into the ground) was further incompetence.

This is what Daddy Kushner did (via Wikipedia, but on the record in this case):

"In 2005, he was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering after hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, arranging to record a sexual encounter between the two, and sending the tape to his sister. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, which he served in the Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery. As a convicted felon, he was also disbarred in three states."

When I bought it, passenger wiper arm was missing. Ok, ordered and put new one on. Maybe didn't get it quite right, off by one or two splines? Or just bend/tweak the new arm so it wipes cleanly?... I dunno.

Washer pump works, but sprays onto the ground from engine compartment... pump (evidently) mounts into the side of washer reservoir. If I try to fill reservoir, liquid eventually splashes onto the ground. Can't see #%$#^ because it's oddly shaped and mostly under the battery tray and behind shrouding at driver's side front tire.

Was *going to* do the work this spring, then summer, then fall-- now it's too cold to fuss around with it. Meh. Just try to avoid mud splash on the road for now.
