Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: El Firsto of Decembero (The First December) Edition!FUNdamentals Last week we reviewed grip, so this week why don't we discuss a proper shooting stance. There are three classic stances; the Weaver, the Isosceles and the Fighting, or at least that's what it says in this article helpfully titled The Three Shooting Stances. I am sure there are more, probably lots more, like the Rainy Tuesday Under a Full Moon stance, and the Look at my Bad-Ass Self With a Drop Holster Tactitard stance, and so forth, but I like keeping things simple. The key is to use whatever position is necessary to achieve a solid foundation without torqueing yourself into an unnatural position if at all possible in order to mitigate recoil and easily re-acquire the target for follow-up shots. If you can do that best by standing on your head and shooting weak handed, then by all means shoot standing on your head weak handed. When I am evaluating a shooter's stance, I am primarily looking at weight distribution. Look at the photos in the article linked above and imagine a combination of the Weaver and a little of the Fighting stances. That looks about like what I recommend. Whatever you do, please do not employ the Waiting For a Bus While Casually Checking Email on Your Phone stance that is evidently gaining popularity now. Instead, think aggressive with about 65-70% of your weight on the front foot leaning into the target. If you start square to the target with 75% of your weight on your heels, only bad things will happen as you begin shooting. Trust me. As you set up on a target, remember to focus on stance every bit as much as you are on grip, trigger and sight alignment, and periodically check that you're not doing something goofy and getting yourself all out of whack. You are focusing on fundamentals, aren't you? Highway Patrol and Trigger Discipline This week our Highway Patrol episode illustrates improper trigger discipline. This otherwise most excellent and popular series from the 1950's is summarized on Wikipedia and includes the following: Two technical advisors (one a patrolman on active service and one retired) read scripts before scenes were shot and were present during filming "to speak up whenever a technical violation, however slight, occurred."Well that's nice. Now settle in and let's take a look at a random episode. 1911 Madness! It's 1911 Madness week here at the ol' Gun Thread! Assembly at the Factory by Gum Chewing Lady Work it, Sister! Our Pal The Steel Rule This Is Not a Test!! Great movie! I bet the cop is a real live wire at parties. Cozy Cave Utilization Update Our little girl Gertie is settling in quite nicely, and Fun Size Joe is being a very patient big brother. The proper order of things. As we see here, Gertie has commandeered both cozy caves! I'm really very seriously not kidding around anymore. I haven't watched the 1911 fake video yet, but I'll again make the pitch that anyone who wants to sink serious $$ into collectible Colt 1911s needs to purchase Charles Clawson's reference books on the Colt 1911. Thirty years on, these books remain the gold standard for 1911 collectors. The cost to obtain these out-of-print tomes will put them out of reach for all but the most serious collectors, though. The best available alternative is Joe Poyer's book about the 1911, which draws heavily from the Clawson books. This book is in print and available from Amazon today for $35.95. What's missing from the Poyer book is the behind-the-scenes history from period correspondence from Colt and the Army about how things happened.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 01, 2024 07:17 PM (rsgN5) --- Though we speak a dialect of English (with altered spellings), The underlying US culture is far more German than English. The English regard hunting as something only for the elite on their fancy estates. The notion of a commoner taking a class and being granted a license to take game is simply inconceivable to them. Germany, by contrast, regards hunting as we do - a key part of land management. German firearms ownership is less than half that of the US, but almost five times that of the UK. And now for a range report: Accuracy of the Howa 1500 isn't good enough to compete with. Hunting accuracy is fine, about 1MOA. Match accuracy just isn't there. Which isn't really a surprise.
New barrel for the Savage won't arrive for a couple of months, at best. I've decided I have to reload and "chase the lands" so to speak. Also, when I build my new rifle next year, I'll keep a spare barrel on hand. No way I'm going through this again. Range report - getting less bad and a little more consistent. Adding a little speed and working on getting the grip set in muscle memory. The trigger hand still wants to clench on the grip periodically if I'm not fully focused on keeping it still. It takes so little to throw a bullet two inches off. Snapcaps on the agenda before the next visit. Still...at the point where we grumble about clusters we would have been pleased to see not so long ago. Fundamentals, kids. Fwiw, tons of people at the range today.

Posted by: Ed L at December 01, 2024 07:37 PM (AiJK3) --- Cavalry were always expected to use only one hand, as were officers (sword was in the other, chuckle). A one-handed grip with bent elbow changes your grip, lowering it to reduce the risk of slide/hammer bite as well. That Astra 300 is one of the slickest shooters I have with one hand. Easy recovery, and while the sights are small, the rounded frame makes them actually prominent and it points naturally. It's really quick on the clock. And then it fell overboard. So sad. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at December 01, 2024 07:53 PM (/lPRQ) --- I'm quite the fan of the Undercoverette. I've never shot a .327 mag, and it seems like too much of a good thing. With the Undercoverette you get a loaded weight on par with a titanium-frame .38 special, but much better stopping power and less recoil. Because the .327 is based on a .357 frame, it's going to be a lot heavier. I mean, I guess if you think .32 Mag is underpowered, it make sense. but .32 mag is equivalent to +p .38 or .380, so it's no slouch. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. I had posted before about a couple of ranges that I saw billboards for in South Carolina. One is the Palmetto State Armory Outdoor Shooting Sports Facility. The other is Champion Defense Shooting Complex. Both of them are located in Swansea, SC. This is a small town outside of Columbia.
I visited Friday after Thanksgiving. They said it was really busy. In comparison to NoVa ranges, it wasn't. It's got a hunting lodge/country club kind of motif. It has a club house where you check in (restrooms are labeled Drakes and Hens), and you can rent golf carts to drive to your shooting stations. The majority of the facility is devoted to shooting clays. There is a 5 bay 10 yard pistol range, outdoor but covered. There is a rifle range (I think it was also 5 bay I don't remember) that had targets at 50, 100, 200, and 300 yards. That doesn't seem like a lot of capacity. There is a lot of space devoted to the clays, but they take a lot of space, so not sure how many simultaneous shooters you can have. They have various club memberships, and those are again geared toward the clays - each of them includes some amount of discount per clay.... Rookie ammo question. I have my dads Ruger 327 federal magnum revolver. When I went looking for ammo for it this summer there was none so I ordered some but I figured my BIL had grabbed the 32 ammo when he cleaned out the gun room after dad passed away.
I never did start reloading nor do I have a serious interest in the guns so BIL and Sister have most stuff. So when I was there in Oct I asked if they had 32 ammo since the Ruger is the only 32. They had a couple boxes and I took them home but its regular 32 ammo. The casings are shorter then 327 magnum ammo. Do I need to find someone with a 32, not 327 magnum that could use a bit of ammo? I boxed the poor thing up and sent it to S&W and paid for their super-deluxe rebluing. I don't want to mess up the Ruger or myself shooting ammo that won't work in it.

What are the weapons with the large barrel covers of some type with the bipods between the bolt-action bipod rifles and the handguns arranged 69-style in the photo mid-rear??
And I don't have any mortars or RPGs in my collection. Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at December 01, 2024 07:48 PM (hovnC) Can't tell for sure, but I think they're RPG-2's. CAUTION: if you happen upon an older .32 revolver, be very careful what you put into it. Those that use .32 S&W long and also handle .32 short, but they may also chamber .32 ACP.
DO NOT TRY THIS. The pressure of .32 ACP is on par with .32 H&R Magnum, and many of those cheap Iver Johnsons will not stand up to it. The modern .32 Mag and .327 Mag have lengthened cases by design so they should not chamber. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at December 01, 2024 08:08 PM (ZOv7s) 146

Champion Defense has a totally different vibe. The rifle side has 20 bays, a couple of those are 50 yard zero, 3 are standing with a barrier/support, the rest are bench or prone. The range goes out to 600 yards. There are 5 different pistol areas. They call them bays but each can have multiple shooters. You can just back your truck up to the bay and then use your tailgate to lay out your gear. One of them is rimfire only.
And there is a "general purpose" range which is rifle or pistol and you can do barriers etc. They also have an archery range. They have memberships or passes for day ($30), week, or month. I like it BUT - I do have some questions about safety. They have 2 RSOs that cover that whole layout I just described. There is a LOT of reliance on the shooters experience and self-policing. The guy who gave me the tour said on the general purpose range you can set up barriers at different distances but you need to coordinate with other shooters so everyone is shooting from the same firing line. I expect their clientele is largely experienced shooters, and their plan has worked for them to this date. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at December 01, 2024 08:13 PM (QfvaV) 159

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 01, 2024 08:06 PM (rsgN5) --- That is correct. I will add that .32 Long is a criminally underappreciated self defense caliber. The guns chambered in it are dirt cheap (unless they're Colts, lol), and ammo is plentiful online and affordable. Why bother? Well, you get the simplicity (and safety) of a revolver, and if you are concerned about recoil, .32 Long is very mild. it also packs much more stopping power than .22 LR or .25 ACP and for a long time was a popular police caliber. Shot placement is king, folks, and if you are more comfortable shooting mild loads, go with it. If you cringe at recoil and regard range time as a chore, you're shooting something too heavy for you. Okay, a question for the group.
Hypothetically speaking, if one wanted to collect representative samples of, for example, WW II military sidearms, would the weapons in question have to be wartime production, or would post-war manufacture be acceptable? What about replicas? Tisa has an arrangement with CMP to produce what they call "museum-grade" WW II 1911A1s that are specially marked by the CMP. Would that fill the 1911 niche? The idea is to have the "look and feel" rather than specific collector models. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at December 01, 2024 08:25 PM (ZOv7s) 184

A blanket pardon or a cozy cave pardon?
Posted by: andycanuck (hovnC) at December 01, 2024 08:33 PM (hovnC) 210
Okay, a question for the group.
Hypothetically speaking, if one wanted to collect representative samples of, for example, WW II military sidearms, would the weapons in question have to be wartime production, or would post-war manufacture be acceptable? What about replicas? Tisa has an arrangement with CMP to produce what they call "museum-grade" WW II 1911A1s that are specially marked by the CMP. Would that fill the 1911 niche? The idea is to have the "look and feel" rather than specific collector models. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at December 01, 2024 08:25 PM (ZOv7s) For the serious, hard core collector community, the answer is "NO!!!" Pristine, original condition firearms command a premium. Replacement parts will knock the price down to the point that the hard core collectors will turn up their noses at such an example. But for casual collectors who aren't concerned about that stuff, replicas will fill the bill just fine. However, replicas have the potential to serve as jumping off points for fakers to create "originals" to be sold at premium prices. Colt has patented its markings and has gone after fakers to protect its brand, though. Posted by: Ed L at December 01, 2024 08:33 PM (AiJK3) 211

If you can do that best by standing on your head and shooting weak handed
Added advantage in a self-defense situation is the perp will be so busy trying to figure out WHAT IN THE BLUE BLAZES you are doing, you'll get your first couple of shots off unimpeded. Howdy, Horde. As has been mentioned here before, I actually find a bladed, one-handed stance to work for me, since I am trained in fencing and in some martial arts. But, for self defense, I find a crouch will get you stable in almost all situations, as you tend to get your feet about shoulder width and to get your weight over the balls of your feet. Not a deep crouch, but (crazily enough) the sort you see in old b&w westerns, with bent knees and a little forward lean. And that is true for bladed or square-on stances. Problem is that some people think the two are one and the same. If people get a replica of a historic firearm, they need to understand what it is and what it is not. Note that replicas are the only way to obtain some historic firearms without paying out five figures or more, such as the Thompson or BAR. Semi-auto replicas are a lot cheaper, don't have NFA paperwork problems, and have better parts availability. But even these might not come cheap. Ohio Ordinance's M1918A3 replica BAR comes in at a hefty $8k. Still, that's only about 10% the cost of the real deal. Posted by: Ed L at December 01, 2024 09:05 PM (AiJK3) 267

Problem is that some people think the two are one and the same. If people get a replica of a historic firearm, they need to understand what it is and what it is not.
Posted by: Ed L at December 01, 2024 09:05 PM (AiJK3) --- Absolutely. I think replicas are useful for people who want to experience the thing without paying for the actual thing. The other problem is that if you buy something authentic, every round you put through it lowers its value. Maybe have a "shooter" to go with your museum piece. I like the idea of the CMP Tisas 1911A1 for that reason. I can shoot it without guilt but it does have the CMP provenance, which is nice. These are clearly designed to make up for the CMP running out of 1911s (at least for the time being). Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. I've seen Baker rifle reproductions are almost all smoothbore for the reenactor market where they shoot them just on the reenacting battlefields for cost and ease of use for loading. So if you want an historically-accurate weapon, and literally accurate as a genuine rifle for use on the range, you have to get a replacement rifled barrel made for it.

It would be lovely to watch all of them either have to get pardoned before January 20, or go on trial shortly thereafter! My strategy if I was Trump would be a strict "no comment" policy for me and all Republicans, and let the Biden brain trust figure out whether to pardon the whole family or cut them adrift. Ok, my feeling is that it would depend on your reason for collecting them. If you have the cash and hope for appreciation, originals. If you have the cash and simply want to hold them and appreciate the history, originals. Of course, Hunter could commit new crimes, which would be outside the scope of the pardon. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at December 01, 2024 09:48 PM (ZOv7s) 347

Hunter is not going to transform into a saint. He will continue his criminal lifestyle, because it's all he knows. Wait until he commits some other crime, arrest him, and promise him a plea deal if he spills the beans on the rest of the Biden Crime family.

Class IIIs will appreciate in value, until they're made legal to produce, once more.
Though I doubt we'll see a full repeal of NFA '34, we're likely to see suppressors "off the list" in the visible future. What is likely with Class III, is they'll repeal that "act" (i forget it's name) which prohibited the manufacture of NEW Class III items. Before which time, an average Class III item such as a Ruger Mini 14 would retail for +/- 3x the retail of it's semi-auto counterpart. Gonna be a whole lotta collectors crying major tears, should that one come to pass. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at December 01, 2024 09:59 PM (Xo+UM) 367

I don't know that the President can legally pardon someone else for "Whatever".
Like, if I were to embezzle phat$taxx! from my employer and also shoplift from the local ValuRite, and I get caught doing the latter, legally Biden could pardon me from the theft charge, but not from the embezzlement if I'd not been charged for that. Seems like a... precedent. If that holds up. And not one that should be a precedent. Posted by: gKWVE at December 01, 2024 10:02 PM (gKWVE) 372
AOP,
Steam wand? Only ones I see are for expresso machines. Posted by: Grateful - the range bag lady at December 01, 2024 09:57 PM (IQ6Gq) When I was a much younger Peon, I bought a Clayton Steamin Demon steam cleaner. Had a kerosene-fired boiler, and electric pumps. Plug it into an AC outlet, fill the fuel tank, and provide a water supply from a garden hose. Had a long steam hose with a wand on it. The wand delivered a jet of high-pressure steam that was quite invisible, but soon condensed into a cloud of fog, especially in the humid air around Vancouver. But it would clean the grease and oil off a car undercarriage like a white tornado, if I could see what I was directing it at. The steam jet would cut concrete, LOL. I'm a lurker. Been shooting since I was 9, that's 48 years ago. Was rated expert on pistol and sharpshooter on m16 during my service years.
Currently enjoying my ar15 in 556 and my sniper rifle is a 204 with custom loads at 4200 fps. Still deadly with my 9mm 1911 Smith and Wesson. Love shooting just for fun, at targets in the gravel pit. Being a hunter all my life has blessed me with time spent with friends and family. Posted by: Kamala's Throat at December 01, 2024 10:15 PM (ippI8) 381
I owned a Baker Rifle replica (.62). I also bought the replica sword bayonet and the belt buckle. The stock was European Walnut and I ordered a Getz match barrel for it. Excellent firearm. I even won a local BP match with it. Posted by: mrp at December 01, 2024 10:17 PM (rj6Yv) 382

But I did want to let you know that even in Commiefornia, there are still people fighting the good fight for the 2A! I give you the "Gunslingers.com." Posted by: An Observation sez China Joe not my president at December 01, 2024 10:06 PM (Da7Vv) Top Gun Range rents a number of handguns and rifles, including some full auto. I’ve looked at renting the Thompson, but haven’t done it yet. Their rates aren’t bad, and their ammo prices for the calibers I bought there are reasonable. They’re on Beverly Hill, just outside the west 610 loop. Posted by: Advo at December 02, 2024 12:41 PM (jO4mz) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0716 seconds. |
