  • Need a faster network connection on your Thunderbolt / USB4 equipped laptop or mini-PC? The RaidenDigit LightONE might be what you need. (Serve the Home)

It is a general-purpose dock, with four USB-C ports (plus a fifth one purely for power), four USB-A ports, full-size and micro SD card slots, and a DisplayPort port. Where it stands out is that it also offers two 25Gbit Ethernet ports.

Yes, they're SFP, but while 25Gbase-T is a recognised standard using Cat-8 cables, there are approximately zero devices supporting it, so I can't really fault the designers there.

Only problem is that if you don't already have one of these you apparently can't get one. There was a Kickstarter, they delivered, the product worked, and then they disappeared.

  • Microsoft is not using your Word and Excel data to train AI. (Bleeping Computer)

    Okay.

  • Australia has passed a law to ban children from social media. (The Register)

The government was repeatedly asked how this was supposed to work, and it had no idea. The legislation nonetheless passed with bipartisan support, because our nominal opposition party is as useless as our nominal government.

26 Is it possible to split the screen and call up the same site in two languages? Posted by: Ben Had

Clarifying. You want to have two browsers open, side by side, open to the same web site, where one is in language A and the second language B most likely is in English?

Follow on questions. What browser are you using and what operating system.

27 Altaria, Windows 10 and firefox.

28 My tablet and phone (.Samsung) have split screen capability. I have no idea how it gets done but it does it often and H8 when it does it. Two different programs can happen simultaneously. No reason it can't be 2 same or totally different to me.

29 Windows 10 allows you to "snap" open windows to specific locations on the screen such as half and half.

Next, browsers do allow one to translate websites. I do not use Firefox so I am not up to speed with how to do that using that browser. However, the search question you want is "how do I translate web pages using firefox" A couple tutorials:
https://is.gd/qY02Ok

36 G'morning Horde.

Australia, and the new social media age-verification law:

The purpose was to create the opportunity to issue huge fines to the big tech firms, like Australia saw Europe getting away with repeatedly. "We want some of that sweet, filthy lucre for ourselves!"

So... How to deal with this if you're a social media platform? Throw the problem right back at the government that created it and let the angry people focus their anger accordingly.

Geo-fence Australia, and lock every user out from that area with a notice, "We were unable to verify with your government that you are 16 years of age or older, per the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024. In future, we hope that your government provides a digital API our service can connect with to perform this age verification so that we can let you into {Social-Media-Platform-Name} again. At that time, we will provide a page where you can update the necessary pieces of information on your profile. Once your age is verified, you may use the service again. Thank you for using {Social-Media-Platform-Name}."

38 Interesting question Ben Had.

I was wondering if it was important to have two different browsers doing the work. Why not use two separate Firefox windows?

Firefox seems to be unique in it's implementation in that the data stays resident in your PC and the translation is done my a neural net trained by Mozilla.

Also that this feature was sponsored by the EU.

51 24 Good morning to one and all. I have a "tech" question.
Is it possible to split the screen and call up the same site in two languages?

If their site has done it correctly, you can even have the same site open in two different tabs and have one tab set for one language, and one set to the other.

Just tried it here with a pet food online store called EdgardCooper and it worked fine. (I found them just now by doing a web search for "sites that offer multiple languages" and going to the Weglot link titled "5 Multilingual Websites That Did Everything Right")

Test it yourself:
https://www.edgardcooper.com/en/

Open this site in two different tabs, click on the tiny globe (or flag if you've already set a country/language) at the top in one and pick "Belgium" as the country and "francais" as the language.

Reload the page on both tabs (circular arrow button or the F5 key) and see if the language in both maintains properly.

Now if the site keeps track of language based on setting a cookie in your browser, and both tabs reference it, then the setting will possibly affect both tabs.

In that case, use two separate browsers. Firefox and Chrome/Chromium should work.

Need to hit Home Depot today for that fuse for my tire inflator; then Aldi for some supplies. Miss Linda wants to visit the Sculpture Garden in the city park. She says they have some new exhibits. Most of what they have is modern and abstract stuff, so the real value is getting a walk in the (semi-) fresh air.

Yes.
The poem exists in many versions; the one featured on the United States Holocaust Memorial reads:

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me."

62 @24/Ben Had (and further to my #51):

Since you want a split-screen solution, you should be able to have two separate instances of firefox running, each connected to the given site, one set to one language, and one set to the other. Resize both instances of Firefox, one to live on one half of the screen, the other to be on the other, and voila, split screen browsing, each with their own language.

Firefox SHOULD hopefully keep the site's cookies distinct between the two separate instances. Hopefully.

Okay, I gotta get ready for work.

88 G'morning, all.

Dinner went well, with the typical excess of food.

Definitely will need the 4 mile morning fart walk to get bak on track.

Then to the dump to give some stuff to the county.

I don't know what they pour over spaghetti in Cincinnati but, if it has cinnamon in it, it ain't chili.

"People like Mr. Rogan prey on people's vulnerabilities. They prey on fear. They prey on anxiety."

"I personally find it deeply repulsive, and to think that someone has such remarkable power in the United States is something that I look at in disbelief."

This my friends is the equivalent of Hitlers Rant in Downfall. It is a tyrant seeing their empire is fake, is fallen, and is in ashes.

Grocery shopping early, then finish loading the RV (oh, joy!) before Her Majesty takes off for Conroe with Diana and George.

George and Puff will be going up this weekend for coursing tests and socialization. George, a handsome boy who unfortunately has only one nut, may have a home lined up for himself.

100 No, I can't imagine cinnamon in chili. My experience of "chili on spaghetti" is with the usual Tex-Mex chili over angel hair pasta. The "hair" part has always bothered me, though, and I wish they'd come up with a new name for it or go with the original Italian name, whatever it was.

102 Hey Kim Williams

have you apologized yet to that Australian SAS Captain you called a war criminal by doctoring combat footage and using the unreliable testimony of an American soldier?

You know the SAS Captain that ABC had to fork out a large sum of taxpayer money to for this scurrilous and libelous smearing?

Thankfully the SAS Captain is a far better human than you Kimmy boy.

So fvck you ABC

It's actually sad. Monorchidism is one of those things that crops up every now and then in the breed. George's uncle Peanut had only one peanut.

The AKC rule is that both testicles have to be descended and of normal size (judges check this) for them to be shown. So poor Georgie has no show career, which is a pity because he's a very handsome boy. Just one more tragedy for this litter.

He got the name before we concluded he'd only have one. More's the pity. He was a handsome dog with a very placid personality, a true gentleman. He and his brother Finn would have made an excellent brace. He suffered from health problems, all of which he bore stoically. We lost him way too soon to cancer.
