I'm Thankful For The ONT

Happy Thanksgiving Horde! Hopefully all of you had an enjoyable day and are browsing the ONT in a tryptophan stupor. Does anyone have any good Thanksgiving stories to relate? We'd love to hear them. We are not liberals, so there will be no discussion of political subjects on the Thanksgving OP (You can talk about politics in the comments if you want, I just won't be writing about politics). Here at Casa de Weirddave, we had a traditional dinner with all the fixins:

IMG_1859.JPG

Sometimes life isn't fair. Jesus is the light of the world, and he dined with sinners and prostitutes, yet when I do the same thing I'm “making Thanksgiving awkward”. People ask WWJD, but I don't really think they mean it.

So what's your favorite part of the bird? Do you like legs? Wings? White meat? Dark meat?

IMG_1857.JPG

Anyone have any favorite recipes they'd like to share? And where do you stand on the great cranberry vs canberry sauce debate? I'm actually a heathen who prefers canberry sauce, and my late night Thanksgiving snack is a sandwich with white bread, canberry sauce and turkey.

IMG_1860.JPG

OK, design your Turkey Day dinner. I can't decide if I want to get rid of the sweet potatoes or the Fed. That's a toughie..

IMG_1868.JPG

I love community notes. Peta can suck it.

IMG_1867.JPG

Thanksgiving is behind us, so here's a money saving trip for Christmas!

IMG_1866.JPG

Thanksgiving humor

IMG_1861.JPG

That's about all I got, I'm feeling overstuffed and sleepy myself. I want to offer my sincere thanks for you, gentle morons. I'd rather spend time with the horde than with the finest people on the planet. You make this community something special, both IRL and here in the gray boxes. Thank you for being a constant source of humor, knowledge support and, yes, love. My world would be much poorer without y'all.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Joe Biden:

18 Mom always grew squash and baked it and served it savory style with butter salt and pepper. I like sweet tater fries. I don't think I would care for them with marshmallows on top. The great neighbors invited me to their meal today. I made dad's fruit salad and brought over. They make sweet taters just sliced and baked or possibly fried in very little butter so I don't skip em at their meal.

🚨#BREAKING: Mysterious lights have been reported over Capitol Hill causes UFO panic in DC

Watch as an apparent UFO was sighting was spotted hovering above Capitol Hill this week, sparking concerns that extraterrestrials might be plotting a coup. The viral snapshot and video show four bright lights eerily positioned just a few feet above the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol dome. The footage was reportedly captured by Dennis Diggins, a US Air Force veteran and licensed tour guide. The sighting quickly caused a stir on social media, fueling speculation, especially since it comes just weeks after a congressional hearing on alleged secret government programs involving “alien” spacecraft.

34 I made a somewhat traditional cranberry ice (basically a syrup sherbet) from an old (1947) refrigerator manual that was quite nice.

I also made a cranberry chutney that was basically cranberries and hot peppers chopped together. This was great with brisket and with turkey as well as on biscuits.

Cranberry Chutney (Vanaja Rao)

1 pkg. fresh cranberries; 10 red or green chilies; 1tsp. salt; 1tsp. cumin; 1 tsp. mustard; 1 1/2tsp. turmeric; oil

In hot oil, pop mustard and add chilies. Cook the chilies and remove them; add washed and drained cranberries and cook until cranberries have popped. Add all the other ingredients. First grind chilies and then add the other ingredients.

I only used four red chili peppers with a 12-oz package of cranberries. And I just chopped the chilis, adding them at the end so as to get the right heat for a Thanksgiving meal.

35 One thing I don't see anywhere at thanksgiving but my mom always made was egg noodles. I think it had turkey drippings and some of the gizzard stuff and typical turkey seasonings. It must have just been a midwest thing. It was really good and I'd covered it with the dressing.

Anyone ever have egg noodles at thanksgiving?

55 Disaster was narrowly avoided today. I spatchcocked my turkey, then cooked it breast down. Target cooking duration was five hours.
At the 3 1/2 hour mark I checked the bird, and found the legs and thighs were done. When I gave them the joint wiggle test, they fell off. Breast was still under cooked.
I pulled the hindquarters off and put them in the refrigerator. Rolled the bird over to breast up and cooked for another 1 1/2 hours.
I think this was due to cooking breast down and having a completely thawed turkey, with zero ice in the interior when I started prep work.

Lets see, my must haves if I'm cooking the meal: mashed taters and homemade gravy, sage dressing, (one year I forgot to buy celery so dad had to wait a day or 2 for the big meal) cranberries in some form, green beans, and either squash or baked sweet taters and some kind of pie. She was a Gourmet cook and laid out an absolute stellar 4 star dinner of which I was compelled to eat (though my stomach was near max) I was served a dish of thin sliced potato's which my wife's cousin called "Dead Rats in Butter" After a taste I exclaimed to my future wife's uncle.." I called mine BBQ sauce, but I guess it could be a chutney.

12 oz fresh cranberries
½ cup water
1/2 onion diced
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
2 Tablespoons dijon mustard
2 cloves garlic minced
2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce diced
Splashes of Worstershire and soy sauce optional.

Throw everything into a pot and bring to boil. Reduce heat and cook 20 minutesish. Optional throw into blender for smoother sauce. I didn't do that.

104 A quiet Thanksgiving here at the secret bunker deep in the forests of Westsylvania. As usual, it was just me and my Dad, so we spent the afternoon watching 3 Stooges films, then the WKRP turkey drop episode, then dinner, then one of our favorite cinematic classics, Tarantula, starring Mara Corday's breasts and John Agar.

We don't have any other family, so holidays are always two-person affairs, and that's just fine with me. More than anything I'm thankful to have been 29 for so long and still have a parent around to make fun of movies with.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

123 First, that Biden pic would be even funnier if there were a dreidel somewhere.

Second, Thanksgiving was not as good as it could have been. DILIT was not able to make it because she had to close at the pet day care. We did get to spend time with the dog, however.

Bacon-wrapped turkey (recipe on Pioneer Woman), a Texas spiced roast beef, cornbread, cucumber-tomato salad, cranberries (not out of a can), spaetzle with gouda and bacon, German potato salad (with bacon), some corn, salad, various drinks, and a pumpkin pie. And, next year, something for the dog. (I evidently cooked with a lot of things dogs shouldn't eat. But I did feed her a piece of bacon or two.)

Confession, the last few years, when I do the big holiday dinner for relatives, I cheat. You know those packages of refrigerated mashed potatoes? Bob Evans is one of the brands. Well, now you can get similar prepared sides, sweet potatoes, stuffing, even mac and cheese. I also got some cornbread and a pie from the bakery section of my grocery store. And frankly, I prefer the can of jelly cranberry sauce. I prepared a big meal that everyone liked. It is however, a bit more expensive.

I don't know about relish (probably grated orange and stuff in there) but cranberries are easy: 1 bag cranberries, 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar. Put water in pot and start heating, add sugar and stir until dissolved, add cranberries and get it back to a boil. When you can her the cranberries popping, go check on it. Once the thing looks a bit of a mess, take it off the heat and let it start to cool. When it's a little cool, put it in a glass container and put it in the fridge to gel. Unless you can't boil water, you can do cranberries easy. (And adding orange zest isn't much harder, though zesting an orange might be problematic for some.)

More foolproof way is to halve that amount of water and sugar and follow the same direction...once it seems cooked, taste it and see if it's too sour/too sweet/just right and/or too loose or too tight. Fix then.

Aka, it's hard to fix a too sweet, too loose cranberry sauce...but easy to sweeten or loosen.

I turned this job over to the kid this year - we did 3 bags of cranberries, 1/2 cup apple cider, 5 diced pears, 2 diced granny smiths, and 1 1/4 cup sugar. She started with 1/2 cup sugar.

178 Horde...can you feel it? Like a painful splinter pulled from your foot... like a cool breeze coming off the hills after a weeklong heat wave...a full moon rise in the still of the night without any other noise cept birds singing in the distance?

I have waited for this...prayed for this...and I will be now vigilant that these days ahead of us mean everything and that this should not be taken from us ever again. To my family I vow this with my last breath.

Goodnight Horde.

I'm sensing that maybe there wasn't sufficient gratitude expressed at your domicile?

The solution to persons who are critical of your cooking is to make them cook instead.

My Dad did that the first year his second wife's family joined us for some holiday. His new mother-in-law asked him to carve the turkey, and then criticized how he did it, so he handed her the knife and walked out of the kitchen.

He never carved the turkey any year following that either.

280 For the lovers/haters of green bean casserole: make 2 kinds of green beans. The Pioneer Woman Cooks has "Green Beans with Tomatoes" - and bacon, onion and a little cayenne. You can do it in a slow cooker so it doesn't take oven space. Be sure to cook it long enough. Good left over.

That sounds yum. Normally I would make some sort of sauteed green beans. This year I made green bean casserole from scratch (no Campbell's soup). Had a meal deal coupon from H.E.B.; fresh mushrooms and the fried onions were free with purchase of fresh green beans. It was quite good.

If I had turkey, mashed spuds, and stuffing on my plate, possibly some baked beans, then I don't need green stuff. Bacon swamps everything with its flavor so no, I want to taste the other food.

I hope you did as well.

Our fourth Christmas in October or November went well. Our friend's children across the street just wanted to decorate the Christmas tree 4 years ago.

Over 2.5 hours, the girls decorate the tree, we buy pizza, our neighbours brought homemade bread, chili, pumpkin pie and whipped cream and the kids had gifts.

Wonderful kids. Decorated the tree, brought the plastic boxes to me to pit away, cleaned up the table after eating, wrapping paper in the garbage. I had to stop the oldest child from doing dishes.

Wonderful neighbours and friends.

Yeah, good Christmas in November on American Thanksgiving.

Saw a YouTube thumbnail which read: Why Modern Socialists Don't Want You To Know Hitler Was A Socialist. (Haven't watched it.) One doesn't have to dig deep to come up with a reason. Guilt by association is a big one. To me, though, it just seems because of the war (yeah, I mentioned it), Uncle Joe being an 'ally' and all, seems every vile thing he did just got whitewashed and/or ignored. Bill Whittle's theory is Lenin's and Stalin's murders and camps were not filmed so we have no visual reference. But we have tons of videos of the atrocities in German camps, as well as survivors' descriptions. Then there is the question of would a camera work in minus 40 degree Fahrenheit anyway? German tanks sure didn't.

Green beans with tomatoes: Your daughter probably followed the recipe which I think calls for cooking them on the stovetop, but you can finish them in a slow cooker if you have a lot of stuff going on around your stove on Thanksgiving. They won't be as good if you skimp on cooking time. Think southern-style green beans.

My grandmother used to serve stewed tomatoes for breakfast, so these seem natural to me for breakfast the weekend after Thanksgiving, too.

331 The "old days"...

We used to visit Dad's sister's family for Thanksgiving. Aunt was a wonderful cook! Uncle was a curmudgeon, but harmless.

2 of our 3 cousins still lived at home and one of them was only a couple years older than me & big bro. She was always my favorite cousin-- didn't tease *all the time* like the others.

After dinner, the adults would have drinks & yap... and "us kids" would go for a walk down the street and out to the edge of the neighborhood. It was a growing subdivision, so the streets were paved and curbs in place, but mostly weedy, vacant lots. Good times! We talked about all kinds of Kid Stuff back in those days.

I miss my cousins. We went different ways and lost touch. Sad.

332 Well, Thanksgiving Day is over now, here in the Central Time Zone. The digesting goes on. There was only MiladyJo, SonM, and me this year, but we somehow managed to struggle through with merely turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, green beans, cranberries, and two kinds of pie. Wine with dinner, a little late-night coffee with the pie. Blessings counted.

Think I might sleep well tonight.

Well, yeah, I've always said, 'It says Socialist right there in the Nazi acronym'. Most people don't even know Nazi is an acronym. National Socialist German Workers' Party. Yep, says 'socialist' right there in the Nazi Party's full name. But they try oh so hard to ignore/cover up that niggling detail.

That's the guilt by association reason I gave for socialists running away from Hitler. I also think post-WW II, left/communist professors started the whole 'Hitler was right-wing' nonsense to separate themselves from Hitler; 'Hitler is right-wing' is all I ever heard through college. And using that Nazi acronym is so handy because you never have to say the full name but people know to whom you refer.

Our Thanksgiving Day gathering was with my in-laws. All five siblings and spouses were there, the matriarch of the clan, and three our her grandchildren.

No talk of politics, which brightened the gathering considerably.

Those ten of us in the first circle are starting to show our age with injury-related infirmities evident.

I chose to eat at the kids' table with our niece, who is youngest of all the cousins at age five. She and her father played a humorous game of "Where's Dad?" as we dined.

The missus and I took half the pot in the football pool, $50, a nice return for our $20 entry fee.

Socialism has been -- and will always be -- a Death Cult.

(Maybe that's why there's an affinity between lefties and pisslam.)

But pick any socialist paradise. Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba, Cambodia, any one or another. Yeah, thanks but no thanks. And now we have Britain falling as people are imprisoned for making a post on X mocking Starmer's government. But they cleared out the jails of real criminals first because . . . priorities.

Like CA and NY and IL... hmm. I see a pattern. Leftards emptying their prisons, so they can be refilled.

Wonder who they'd want to put in all those empty cells? Hmm.

It's a mystery.

More than that, reaaly. It's an incurious mystery. Like Epstein's flight logs or P. Diddy's freak-off vids. Nobody of influence seems the least bit interested. I still would like to have some explanation for the Las Vegas Shooting, thankyouverymuch. So many things we're not told and nobody seems to be bothered to even ask the question. I hope Trump really does shake things up.

348 Mom's final Thanksgiving (2001), she was in hospital. Pulmonary edema, intubated, semi-conscious.. We didn't know if she'd pull thru. (she did, but only lived another few months)

I cooked for Dad, hubby & brothers. We had fried pork chops, mash and gravy, steamed broccoli.

We prayed and visited her. Once she regained her senses, was shocked that it was then December! Last she remembered "it was just after Halloween"

Mom was awesome. We didn't always get along, but I miss her every day.

349 Breakfast is going to be turkey, stuffing and lots of gravy, not that you asked.

I have almost 40 cousins on one side of the family, unexpectedly heard from one of them today. It was nice.

No shit!

It's beyond puzzling, that our "media" is so disinterested in these obvious scandals. Oh, wait. Maybe some high-ups have worries? LMFAO.

Same here. Can't eat raw onion.

I have hiatal hernia, take prilosec daily. It's not quite enough...

I used to have a problem with fresh garlic repeating -- every time I ate eat. One day, I decided to cut a clove in half and, using the point of the knife, removed the sprout on both halves. Been doing that for some 20 years without any garlic repeating on me.

Don't know about the onions. I like onions, all of them (Spanish, white, red, shallot, leek, spring). But could be a similar thing. I doubt it, though. Probably a specific chemical compound in onions, like capsaisin in hot peppers.

Posted by: RickZ at November 29, 2024 02:57 AM (gKDq2)

357 I've also heard if you can't eat onions, try a Vidalia (East Coast) or a Maui (West Coast). I don't like Vidalias because they don't have much onion flavor and are a little sweeter. They say those onions are the onions for people who don't like onions.

Posted by: RickZ at November 29, 2024 03:03 AM (gKDq2)

358 Garlic is less a problem than onion, in my case. Don't know why.

Gotta talk about it with Dr, next time. Maybe take prilosec twice a day instead of just in the a.m.?

Seems okay if I have a (thin!) slice of raw onion on a sandwich at lunch, but NOT okay if it's later in the day.
