Don't Be a Jive Turkey

I just had my first tranche of Thanksgiving dinner. I wisely stepped away from the table so I wouldn't over-eat.

But believe me, I'm going in hard again later.

Lemme ask. Why does politics come up at all at a family dinner? You'd think for a few hours people could keep their yaps shut over something that's likely to be contentious. So why start? Can't anyone just enjoy the company instead of haranging an audience?

I have given up on trying to get the broke-down Suburban back together. And I still have to get the '08 Suburban onto the hoist and change out a bad U-joint.

Just did it...yeah, it's got 10 minutes left, tops. Time to panic a little and get the mashed potatoes done!

Reason folks eat so much dry turkey - people believe the internet/bag directions and don't temp check early...really early...and they have an oven like mine (one my spouse says he might replace for me for Christmas)...

So, food at 4:30 vs 5...no one will mind...if the potatoes get done...

74 Braenyard, you probably don't want to hear this, but those fans are generally the same fan design based around copper wrapping around that laminated iron core. If it had no trouble and seized up after sitting for a summer, the oil in the bearings probably turned into something similar to peanut butter impregnated dust bunnies.

What usually fails in those are the bearing seizing up. There are generally no bearings as such, just a sintered bronze bushing holding the pin the fan turns on. Those get mucked up with dust and cat hair, and bind up. One attempted fix is to put 4-in-one or clp on the bearing to let it sit for a bit and then judiciously rap the end of the fan axle with a bit of wood, and see if that loosens it up.

86 Speaking of Jive:

There's a story behind that.

ZAZ figured out that it would be funny to have two black guys speaking in slang so impenetrable that it required subtitles.

So, they auditioned actors, and explained in the audition notice what they wanted to do in the scene.

ZAZ had written a script, but as one of them put it - "We're Jews from suburban Milwaukee! What do we know about black speech?"

However, two guys who had been friends since high school showed up with their own script to the audition, and when ZAZ had picked themselves off the ground from laughing, they told that the actors that they were hired, and that they would use their script in the movie.

During filming, the two guys took Barbara Billingsley out to lunch and taught her how to speak jive.

So the two guys besides acting also got a writer's credit, which I'm sure has been worth a pretty penny over the years.

Just be sure to put the whipped cream or ice cream on it *after* heating.

We staged a quick raid at noon to bolster our dessert offerings and middle daughter found vodka-infused whip topping.

I kid you not.

Old and busted: a little Kahlua on your vanilla on your vanilla ice cream.

New hotness: vodka whip on the pumpkin pie.

And yes, by family tradition, this IS a drinking holiday.

96 However, two guys who had been friends since high school showed up with their own script to the audition, and when ZAZ had picked themselves off the ground from laughing, they told that the actors that they were hired, and that they would use their script in the movie.

During filming, the two guys took Barbara Billingsley out to lunch and taught her how to speak jive.

So the two guys besides acting also got a writer's credit, which I'm sure has been worth a pretty penny over the years.

Decision fatigue. You're stressed about dealing with a thing, the easy solution does work, so you just want to get out of it.

This is why minor bits and crap linger in corners for years on end because by the time I get to them, I'm too worn out from big cleaning to deal with it. This weekend we'll be solving a few of these problems.

I caught a bit of flak on this the other night, but it is a fact that while we have an English heritage, our culture is actually closer to Germany than that of the contemporary UK. Germany to this day has a robust hunting culture and their firearms laws (and laws regarding weapons) are a lot more sane than in England.

Germany still has a very strong firearms industry with names like Walther, H&K, SIG-Sauer and even tiny Austria can boast Glock and Steyr.

The UK's small arms industry is gone. Hunting there is the preserve of the ultra-rich on landed estates or oppressed farmers who have to do reams of paperwork to have deer killed. In Germany, it is open to anyone will do take the classes and get their licenses.

I mean where did the legendary Pennsylvania and Kentucky rifles come from, the ones that decimated British officers at Saratoga? The Rhineland.

BTW, von Steuben was the drillmaster of the Continental Army and to this day we salute like Germans, not with our palms up like the British.

Tim Burton is okay. He's done some good flicks.

Other than Michael Keaton as Batman, he's good at casting.

I mean, it was genius to cast Vincent Price in Ed Scissorhands. And Martin Landeau in Sleepy Hollow.

186 Take it apart, and see if it has an internal circuit breaker. The little electric fan heater running right behind me now had an internal circuit breaker, which failed open, so I bypassed it (and wrote a note to that effect in Sharpie on the case!). It has worked fine for years, since.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon
---

It uses two metal strips with contact points. When the strip warms it contracts and moves away from the other strip, opening the circuit. I bent the strips closer to the point of good contact at #2 on the setting dial. Progressively within less than two minutes, moving the setting to a higher number each time, the contact strip (it resembles a flat feeler gauge strip) had resumed its original shape leave the circuit open at the highest setting.

Thought about a dab of solder on the contact points. If the solder melted it would clear the electronics and fall to the bottom of the heater. Second thought is to wrap copper wire the two strips together.
