Thanksgiving Eve

It's the most wonderful time of the year. I don't mean that with an ounce of cynicism or sarcasm. I love Thanksgiving and think it is probably our greatest holiday. Not that it is without its stresses and, of course, its expenses - regardless of what the propagandists at CNBC have to say. I am eyebrow-deep in those stresses and expenses, but c'est la vie. It's part of the package, and more than worth it.

Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. Not that end-of-season harvest festivals are uniquely American, or that thanksgiving celebrations are uniquely American. They are not. But Thanksgiving as tremendous multi-day civic holiday is. We have one Thanksgiving Day, but it goes beyond that for most. It's always among the busiest - if not the busiest travel period of the year for a reason. It's a time when Americans come together and celebrate.

And there is always something to celebrate. Maybe you had a great year and have nothing but bounty to celebrate. Maybe you had a lousy year full of tribulations, as is distressingly common. But there is always something good worth acknowledging. When Lincoln founded our great national holiday, we weren't exactly sauntering through our salad days of joy and luck. We were a nation at war with itself, brother against brother. And yet, even then, there were things for which we could give thanks.

Thanksgiving is the most truly inclusive holiday on anyone's calendar. It is a universalist holiday, and a civic holiday. It is prayerful though not religious. It is national though not exclusive. It is not for some but not others. It is about one of the few common threads linking all men: gratitude, and the capacity for gratitude. It applies to and is for all of us. Thanksgiving is an American holiday through and through and is emblematic of our American culture. Whether one is an American by birth or an American by choice, this is our great time to celebrate what we have and who we are.

So the turkey came out dry or the cranberries were too tart (or not tart enough) or your blowhard cousin can't stop running his mouth or some drunk relative spills wine on the rug. Things can go wrong. Things can cost too much and be too much work. Regardless of the state of the world or the stresses or expenses of hosting or of travel or of being in close quarters or of having to work or being alone on the holiday, I sincerely hope everyone can find joy and reflect on his blessings - however numerous or sparse - during our great American celebration of gratitude.

It's just Her Majesty and me. And a very traditional dinner planned. Turkey, scalloped potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie. Last year we were watching puppies. In 2021, she was in Alabama at a show. We have a strange house.

38 I'm'a say this much, as much as I complain, I've still got loads to be thankful for. Finding a good church (at last!) has been a major boon to my spirit and my mind. I've got a roof over my head and maybe not three square meals a day, but I don't starve. My clothes may be ragged but I have them. I do have good friends still. Maybe now I can start putting the other pieces together with sanity seeming to return...so a little more hope in that area.

If you look hard enough, there's always something to be thankful for. And in my mind, it's worth it to make the effort.

Yes, and our biggest shopping days of the year were the days AFTER Christmas...Boxing Day which became Boxing Week.

BUT our retailers need to stay open to so a lot of them have Black Friday sales now. Which saves people the trouble of having to cross the border for good deals.

60 When I was a kid, my favorite part of Thanksgiving was watching all the parades on CBS hosted by the stars of various CBS shows, with William Conrad as the overall host.

They even showed the parade in Honolulu. Hosted by Jack Lord, of course.

Political power allows patronage which keeps disparate and contradictory interests together.

They were saved in 2016 by the GOP ganging up with them against Trump. It was also within the realm of normal political losses.

2020 would have shattered the party, but the cheat kept them together. It was obvious that the frictions within the party were not actually fixable, but patronage (positions, money, and power) papers over a lot.

2024 is going to strain the fractions in the D Party A LOT. They'll come together for 2026 to some degree, but the primaries should be particularly vicious.

Usually the tree goes up right after Halloween. Sometimes a bit earlier but we had a ton of renovations this year. And the kids of our friends and neighbours come over every year to decorate the tree.

Very informal. Just 2.5 to 3 hours. We get pizza and the kids get presents which started in year 2. I guess this is year 4.

Works out well this year.

I only got to experience that for 10 years with the family of my ex -- and it WAS wonderful.

Only exception -- and even though I was a football fan at that time: after eating, ALL the males would retire to the living room -- except for me (struck me as rude and anti-social).

First, I'd take all the kids outside to play for an hour, and then I'd hang out & talk with the females who remained at the dinner table (and helped clean up and do dishes).

Needless to say, this ingratiated me bigly with the ladies of the family ...

Yeah, I'm the oldest of eight sibs and we had yuge gatherings as an Auntie and Nonna lived just up the hill.

I'm thankful I still have all my sibs. My youngest sister (I still remember rocking her to sleep when she was an infant) pointed out to me the other day that one of us will never see a funeral for any of the others. And one of us will see them all.

171 Hubbymayhem has to work tomorrow. He's off on Friday. The boy spawn and his lady have full day schedule tomorrow for Thanksgiving stuff with her family. So we are doing our Thanksgiving on Friday! Not shopping, not working, and not stressing. Just enjoying a meal and spending time together.

Unless we have to cart Hubbymayhem to the ER. He has something going on with his leg that looks like he could have a blood clot. DVT can be a problem for truck drivers. There will almost certainly be a doctor visit either Friday or Saturday.
Which could interfere with the not stressing part of the plan.

If any of you praying maniacs want to toss a few for Hubbymayhem, it will be appreciated.

Contrast this with 2000, when Ralph Nader, the most visible third-party candidate, was barred from entering the debate hall.

Third-party candidates get all kinds of press when they can siphon off Republican votes.

During the protests that accompanied the food riots in Argentina in the 80's there was a series of propaganda ads put out trying to denigrate the protesters acting against the "economic austerity moves", showing chubby matrons wearing their furs beating on saucepans (caserolazo protest) to show that the people who were against the economic changes were the ones who had too much

In many ways that Zumba protest is just made to be the same thing, AND THEY ARE DOING IT TO THEMSELVES
