Fed 9 for brunch and 7 for dinner...
My new sweet potato recipe got rave reviews (well, all the food did, since the guest said it was the best he'd ever had...again, though, in NoVA, the cooking standards are lower so it's easier to wow people)...stole a Georgian recipe (aka deep south) for sweet potatoes with a peanut topping, and then dropped 60% of the sugar and all the dairy out of it (and upped the salt). It was a wow dish, even I thought so. And since my youngest ate 3 helpings of it, and yet only eats 1 green bean, we probably are gonna have to bring it back on the day (which is okay b/c I think I'm having an extra again next year, anyway, so an extra dish is good)... And it was such a blessing my 2 oldest helped cook and do dishes...and my spouse carved. Made the day manageable for me... Posted by: Nova Local at November 28, 2024 08:07 PM (exHjb) 15

Posted by: Hadrian the From 2016. I was curious. In front of millions of Americans on Thanksgiving Day, Aretha Franklin transformed the National Anthem into a religious experience. And a football stadium into a gospel church. The average time taken to sing the National Anthem is 1 minute 57 seconds. On Thanksgiving Day, Aretha Franklin more than doubled that mark with a stunning, near-religious rendition at Ford Field in downtown Detroit. The entire stadium, and millions of Americans, were effectively taken to church before a traditional NFL matchup between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. They were also unified by a spiritual leader who played a critical role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s. In the end, the spiritual performance clocked 4 minutes and 55 seconds, which is the longest recorded Posted by: Stateless at November 28, 2024 08:37 PM (jvJvP) Posted by: Elsie the Cow at November 28, 2024 08:37 PM (nS6qG) 37

Hatred of this country is a relatively new thing. Liberals back in the day didn't hate the country so much as they hated some of the same things we now hate. Mostly the elite and permanent government that has completely lost the plot on everything. There are always fringes but they weren't the heart of either side. Most people do actually love this country and so do the millions trying to invade this racist, fascist country. Loving this country is now back in fashion. It's going to be a great time. The Star-Spangled Banner officially became the U.S. national anthem in 1931, and by the end of World War II, NFL Commissioner Elmer Layden ordered that it be played at every football game. The tradition quickly spread to other sports, aided by the introduction of large sound systems and post-war patriotism. The anthem’s adoption also gave way to a new American pastime, almost as beloved as sports itself: complaining about people’s behavior during the national anthem. By 1954, Baltimore Orioles general manager Arthur Ehlers was already bemoaning fans he thought disrespected the anthem by talking and laughing during the song. Ehlers briefly stopped playing the anthem altogether, before relenting to pressure and reinstating it a month later. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at November 28, 2024 09:54 PM (63Dwl) 97

So, sing along with the anthem or no? I can't hit all the notes but growing up with it playing for the small school basketball games it was the thing for the bleachers to sing along with the record of the anthem.

According to my family and guests I have not lost my ability to cook. Rave compliments. Best ever they said. That makes me happy and grateful.
Unfortunately, I lost my sense of taste mid-August and couldn't taste much. Posted by: olddog in mo at November 28, 2024 10:04 PM (hoCmQ) 105
Okay, sorry to be such a downer. I'll stop. Much more enjoyable to hear about the great day y'all had. Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh, and I zested off the tip of pinky and it may have gone into the cranberry sauce, but no one commented. So that was good.

Had a crappy T-giving some years ago, before hubby & I got married:
Mom had already passed, Dad was out of town, BF had broken up with me, and work wanted volunteers (factory job) as we were way behind on order fulfillment. Okay... So I did ten hours, came home to my empty house, no phone messages. Glad for my big ol' calico cat! She was my only buddy that day.
