I was on a trail one time and I saw a very large eagle's shadow crossing on the ground. I was almost as alarmed as that cat.

You might say, what were you afraid of? An eagle can't do anything to you.

I saw an idiot arguing that tariffs would be inflationary, because they would raise prices. People tried to reason with him, pointing out that a TAX does not cause inflation, it actually reduces money in circulation. Only increasing the money supply can cause inflation.

The worst effect of a tariff is less overall economic activity, which would create deflation.

I have been banned from Tractor Supply. Yesterday I was at my local TSC store buying a large bag of dog food for my loyal dogs, and I was in the check out, when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog?
What the heck did she think I had an ELEPHANT !??! So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog. I was starting the DOG DIET again. I added that I probably shouldn't , because I ended up in the hospital last time, but I'd lost 10 pounds before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of my orifices and IV's in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way it works is to load your pockets with dog nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. ( I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story)
Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in the intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the curb to sniff an Irish Setter's rear end and a car hit me.

It's true though. I can't walk out of the pet store with food and treats for less than $150. I took Elvis to the vet the other day for a lump on his chest that turned out to be benign but still cost $300.

I'm smoking 2 hams and doing 2 turkeys in Big Easy's (infrared cooker) and have more people coming over than we've had in the house in a LONG time.

First Lady is a bit frustrated as she doesn't have the energy she thought she would 2 weeks off chemo, but she's making do.

It's been an incredibly stressful week, but HOPEFULLY I don't f*ck up the food, and all will be fine.

When I can get pork or chicken at a price cheaper for the ounce than canned cat food, I grind it and can it for the cats.

All but the one cat love it, and the one cat can eat dry food if he is picky, he is too fat anyways. Beef is never cheap enough to do that, though.

The reef where we used to take more experienced divers had two outer coral heads that basically formed a figure 8. There was an ancient cuda that lived around the reef that was always present. We nicknamed him Sam.

Sam was huge, over 3 feet, and we made t-shirts with his likeness for the dive shop. Teeth like a vampire but he was pretty much a pet.

Nothing funnier than to take a diver around one of the coral heads and have same hanging out and watch them blow bubbles as Sam flashes his teeth.

10 minutes a pound, roughly. I do an injection using Tony Chacherie's Butter Creole 1 to 2 hours before in a room temp bird.

I have also had a woman SCUBA dive buddy do her best Jackie Bisset impression with only a T-shirt and her natural buoyancy flotation devices akimbo. What made it especially fun, was her antics with her BC, as she tried to attain neutral buoyancy. She had inverted herself and was trying to 'shake loose' the excess air in her BC by gyrating, instead of getting the vent hose above the BC, so it would vent. She didn't want my help, so I just watched her.

Some years ago I was at a regional training conference and many of my fellow civil servants were prior military. We went out to do dinner and the waitress asked for drink orders. The place specialized in Old Fashioneds, so I said I'd have one of those. The waitress asked if I wanted whiskey or brandy. I thought a minute, and said "yes."

The next person asked was one of the presenters, who was also a retired Army officer. I was a senior NCO in the ANG. He never took his eyes off me and said evenly: "I'll have what he's having."

I do not remember much of that night.

My wife and kids are fine, and we're having a family dinner tomorrow.

Some weeks ago my mother texted me that she was too busy to talk because she was spending 12 hours a day working against White Christian Nationalists. She will be visiting us Saturday. Tomorrow we will spend a some time practicing walking on eggshells in preparation.

I think the grandkids (her great-grandkids) will be a welcome distraction, though.

223 Yes, ace, baking my pie (singular). Tomorrow morning actually. It's an extra (my assignment for the family event is garlic mashed potatoes), decided to go with sweet potato pie this time. First time making it. Will fancy it up with pecans in bourbon sauce around the edge.

Dough is made and chilling. Sweet potatoes roasting now, followed by 3 heads of garlic for the potatoes. Finishing off a decent cab from the other night, leftover tri-tip for dinner.

And the 4th of a 5-pack of Sancho Panza Double Maduro cigars finally was what I was expecting. Nice bitter chocolate note. Moving from relief at the election result into (discreet) exultation and indulgence. But the college gym is empty this weekend so we'll be there a bit working off some of the indulgence. And my friend's annual b-day pentathlon (duathlon for me) on Sunday.

It's comical. Earlier in the year she explained to me this dire emergent threat. I let her go on for a while and then said: "You live in West Michigan. They aren't White Christian Nationalists, Mom, they' Dutch Reformed."

She then babbled on abou ttheir crimes and I calmly replied: "Mom, they're Calvinists. Nobody likes Calvinists."

It's crazy to look back and see how our diet is basically ultra-premium cuts of meat, which is free-range, has their own emotional support staff and personal physicians.
