Robby Starbuck: Walmart Will End or Modify Some DEI/Woke/Transinsanity Policies (While Doubling Down on Others)

This isn't the win that Starbuck suggests it is, but it is moving things in the right direction.

It could be that corporations are going to suddenly revert back to (partial) sanity. Not only is the public extremely hostile to these policies -- and that can no longer be denied, as America elected a president who vows an end to DEI/CRT/trannies in the military -- but also, these policies require the government to provide cover for them.

These policies are illegal and discriminatory on their face. The only way a corporation can implement them and not be bankrupted is by having the political establishment running cover for them.

That cover is now gone.

But I don't want to take away anything from Robby Starbuck, either. He keeps telling these woke corporations that he's preparing to make them infamous, and they keep backing down.

Somewhat. As you'll see, this is mixed bag, and the "commitments" Walmart makes are mostly of the "review" or "evaluate" or Endeavor to Persevere kind.

MASSIVE news: Walmart is ending their woke policies. I can now exclusively tell you what's changing and how it happened.
Last week I told execs at @Walmart that I was doing a story on wokeness there. Instead we had productive conversations to find solutions.
Below are the changes Walmart committed to. I have to give their executives major credit because this will send shockwaves throughout corporate America. This is the biggest win yet for our movement to end wokeness in corporate America.
Here are the changes Walmart committed to:
* Surveys: Walmart will no longer participate in the HRC's woke Corporate Equality Index.

This is a bigger move than it seems. The HRC is the main enforcer of gay/trans insanity in corporations. By refusing to participate in their "index" -- which is a checklist of woke policies corporations must implement to get their approval -- Walmart is taking away power and credibility from the HRC, and also working to normalize non-compliance with their lunatic demands.

* Products: Monitor the Walmart marketplace to identify and remove inappropriate sexual and / or transgender products marketed to children.
* Funding of Grants: Review all funding of Pride, and other events, to avoid funding inappropriate sexualized content targeting kids.

"Review" is a weasel word. Both of these "commitments" are very weaselly.

* Equity: We will not extend the Racial Equity Center which was established in 2020 as a special five-year initiative.
* Supplier Diversity: We will evaluate supplier diversity programs and ensure they do not provide preferential treatment and benefits to suppliers based on diversity. We don't have quotas and won't going forward. Financing eligibility will no longer be predicated on providing certain demographic data.

"Evaluate" is another weasel word, but at least they say they won't have quotas going forward.

* LatinX: Walmart will no longer use the term in official communications.

This is nothing. This is the one thing the Woke Left has agreed they will stop doing. It's the one concession they're willing to make. And actually, they agreed that "LatinX" was a big problem for them back in 2021.

* Trainings: Walmart will discontinue racial equity training through the Racial Equity Institute.

Good. Starve the Woke Grifter Racists of corporate money.

* DEI: Walmart will discontinue the use of DEI as a term while ensuring a respectful and supportive environment. Our focus is on Belonging for ALL associates and customers.

This is less than nothing. They're only agreeing to stop using DEI as a term. They will not stop DEI. They'll just call it Heightened Inclusiveness and Aggressive Belongingness or whatever.

Remember, Walmart is the #1 employer in America with over 1.6 Million Employees and they have a market cap of nearly $800B. This won't just have a massive effect for their employees who will have a neutral workplace without feeling that divisive issues are being injected but it will also extend to their many suppliers.
We've now changed policy at companies worth over $2 Trillion dollars, with many millions of employees who have better workplace environments as a result. I'm happy to have secured these changes before Christmas when shoppers have very few large retail brands they can spend money with who aren't pushing woke policies. Companies like Amazon and Target should be very nervous that their top competitor dropped woke policies first. I think Target specifically will suffer serious sales problems as a result and Walmart will benefit.
Our campaigns are now so effective that we're getting the biggest companies on earth to change their policies without me even posting a story outlining their woke policies. Companies can clearly see that America wants normalcy back. The era of wokeness is dying right in front of our eyes. The landscape of corporate America is quickly shifting to sanity and neutrality. We are now the trend, not the anomaly.

They deliver around here. We've got in the habit of buying as many basic products there as possible and only going to the local grocery store for stuff you want to eyeball before you buy (produce, steaks, etc.). It does save money.

56 DEI policies don't hurt companies, but are the latest social/political hot topic so everyone must pile on. The underlying problem is there is not enough DEI without apology. It's like voting - we need more not less.

Your daily reminder that major corporations do not have morals and values. They seek only to increase their profits, however they can. They made noises about more inclusive policies when the #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements were in full swing because they thought that doing so would make them more more money. Now they are flipping the other way because they think that doing so will make them more money.

My sister in law worked in DEI for a major energy supplier in the northeast. She was recently notified the entire DEI department was being eliminated effective immediately.

Cowards. The fact Repubs talk about "merit" when Trump isn't "qualified" to run a lemonade stand make me realize I'm in the Twilight Zone. Trumpers refuse to realize that hiring mediocre white men is yet another form of "DEI".

Competitive advantage. Companies that pursue DEI will have a clear competitive advantage and will out compete companies who don't.

lol. There will be no 25% tariff on Canada. Trump is using the threat of devastating Canada's economy (and Mexico's) to try to prod both countries to stop being way points for illegals coming here.

Albertsons and Safeway and others that I don't exist here or Kroger, aka King Supers and all the chains they bought or the mexican groceries, the mexican groceries are probably locally owned small businesses but I don't know spanish. I am glad Wallys is being responsive to Mr Starbuck. I was shocked that TSC had been woke and I am very happy they responded to the pressure campaign to stop that BS cuz I shop a lot there.

Mexico has very good control of their own southern border. They are just deciding, for their own reasons, to allow millions of people to stream across it on their way to the US.

These people can piss off. Besides living in an actual desert I live in retail desert where the people here don't make a lot of money. Walmart is an essential part of the community here - their stores drive me crazy, they are retail factory farms. They come with good and bad. Walmart creates a retail monoculture but they also provide a range of options at a low cost that the local economy could never provide.

In these smaller lower income communities, like much of the USA, all you need to do is watch the Back to School shopping and Christmas shopping to get a real understanding of the positive value they bring. Not naive here, there is a real downside cost to all that but without them things would be worse.

But I agree. I stopped buying cheap stuff years ago. I would much prefer to spend $300 on a pair of boots that are high quality, can be re-soled, are made in the US in small, high quality batches, and last me several years than buy $65 pair on Amazon or at Walmart or whatever.

And I kind of carry that over in to everything I can. I have fewer possessions, but I take better care of them, enjoy them more, and they last longer.

Yeah. I hate to sound like a bleeding heart lib here, but it feels so... wasteful.

A few years ago I stopped buying plastic clothes hangars because I'm clumsy and kept breaking them. I've been replacing them with higher quality wooden ones. I have yet to have one break.

Yes, I'm spending more money on clothes hangars, but I feel better about having wooden hangars for, whatever, 10 years, then I do about breaking the plastic ones every few months.

The only planned obsolesce I can't easily avoid is tech. For example, the battery died in one of my airpods, and I really didnt have a practical alternative but to buy new ones. So now I'm on a schedule of buying new headphones made of plastic and lithium ion batteries every few years I guess. Which I don't love.

Grocery stores exist but are generally more expensive than Wal-Mart. And don't have as large of a selection. Especially produce. I don't see a lot of skanky people at our local store. Up here it's coyotes and buzzards. There's a good sized pack of coyotes that owns this section of the forest and some days we get between 40-50 buzzards that roost in the trees.

Back in my entrepreneurial days, I once came THIS CLOSE to founding a tech startup dedicated to designing and making hand-CRANKED laptops -- that is to say, it would be just a regular laptop, but have built into it a hand-crank connected to a dynamo/generator, allowing people to recharge the laptops battery even when having no access to a wall socket.

The primary customer bases would be people in third-world countries where there is often no electrical grid in the boondocks, campers/hikers/outdoorsman who want a laptop when out for multi-day hikes, and crazy enviro-lefties who think plugging into "the grid" is inherently evil.

Sadly to say, I abandoned the idea before ever doing it. But I still think it was a good idea.

I follow a value mindset over a price mindset - it helps that I can afford the often higher price that value items demand. I offset some of that by buying less. Many items in my house are a decade old and still fulling their purpose perfectly. I spent much effort figuring those things out and boy, they can sting when writing the check for them but in the end I never regret my choice. There is value in that.

That was the problem. Prelinimary research revealed that it was nearly a 1-to-1 crank-to-usage ratio -- i.e. if you crank for 10 minutes, you get ten minutes of battery charge -- based on the existing technology used for emergency radios and flashlights.

I thought that wasn't good enough, so I'd have to do a bunch of R&D to get at least a 2-to-1 ratio -- i.e. 2 minutes of laptop used for every 1 minute of ranking -- for the pubic to like the product. But funding R&D was out of my league, so I dropped the idea.
