Middle-aged Taylor Lorenz being fixated on youth is nothing new. The Boomers pioneered the unprecedented inversion of status where youth was exalted and age denigrated.
A large part of this had to do with loss of faith in God. If you accept the reality of the afterlife, than death holds no fear for you. However, if you deny the hereafter, than your entire being is swept up in a desire to deny the passage of time, to pretend you're still 29, and this requires facial surgery, supplements, etc. to maintain this illusion. Never knew that the night before their death ride towards Okinawa, the crews of the Yamato and its little task force partied like crazy (as if it were the last time they would).
"All divisions to receive sake". Ships' stores were thrown open. CO of Yamato was seen two-fisted drinking straight from bottles, his XO was wrestling junior officers. Sailors sitting in circles on the deck, singing drunken songs. When visiting last year, was surprised to learn Yamato was anchored its last night (April 6) just off the island where the kaiten suicide torpedo base/museum is located. Getting the book by surviving junior officer on Yamato, Yoshida Mitsuru (Requiem for Battleship Yamato) wherein all the juicy details were reported. I watched Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves last night. Its okay, 3 out of 5. I just re-watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service on Amazon. It remains really good. It's got all the good stuff you want in a James Bond movie, and it's all well done.
I tried to get a girl to watch it with me and my selling point was, "It's almost like a real movie." By which I mean, it's more than a very formulaic Bond movie. Though the formula is there (and really well done), it's more than that. It has some of the funniest lines of any Bond film. I also watched Dr. No. The first half is pretty good, the second half is meh. There are no twists in it at all. Bond follows the breadcrumbs directly to the villain's lair, then has a punch-up with him. Then it's over. Posted by: ace at November 26, 2024 07:57 PM (KRtlO) 102

I have a good friend who gave me a 10 lb ham for thanksgiving, he and a couple guys hunt feral hogs, then they take the good ones and smoke about 300 - 400 lbs to give to their friends, he takes his him and first wraps them tight and injects them with Chardonnay overnight, then smokes them in a big smoker for 5 or 6 hours. I gotta keep it on a garage fridge, because it’s so smoky that it’s just too strong to keep in the kitchen fridge. But it tastes wonderful.

I just re-watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service on Amazon. It remains really good.
Lazenby was great in that, its better than its given credit for. The sped up fight scenes were not great but other than that, I really enjoy it. Daniel Craig was a bad Bond. He was good at playing stoic, but had zero chemistry with any of the women and looked all wrong. Plus, by that point, everyone thought spy trillers had to be Bourne Identity, and they completely lost their way with how to write and direct a Bond movie. Had some good action sequences, but almost always very much following in the footsteps of previous films, where the older Bond movies led the way. I guess some (jealous, ignorant) folks in the UK carped that Fleming had no cloak/dagger/intel background back when the Bond thing was taking off. True, but he did have *some* intel background - as in being secretary to the chair of the UK's most important naval intel committee during the war (something like that, of course I forget details), and so was read in to just about all the high-level intel traffic of the war. Few novelists in the intel realm have anything like that background, AFAIK.
Clavell did have the experience of actually being in the Chang-I POW camp during the war, so "King Rat" was in his lane. Just thinking of one novelist who was writing from direct experience. Posted by: rhomboid at November 26, 2024 08:20 PM (1m82a) 181

Yeah they are one of the 19230182 easter eggs in the movie, no lines but in the background a few times. The writers went out of their way to make a lot of D&D references, and there were plenty of monster examples from the series (including a Displacer Beast, although it looked like the writers didn't quite get what the creature actually was like). But they didn't do a good job with character classes. Everyone was kind of generic slightly sneaky light fighter except the barbarian girl. The "druid" was just a shapeshifter, she had zero magic. I rank Timothy Dalton higher than Connery as Bond because despite having pretty poor writing and plotting, he exemplifies the book version of Bond the best of all the actors. He was supposed to do Goldeneye, which would have rescued his career as Bond, but scheduling conflicts.

Kind of attached to the Golden Era Bond movies myself, probably because I saw them at a different age (as the philosopher said, you never step in the same river twice).
And possibly because they were just classier, more classic products. Only much later have I learned, and find very amusing, that in Dr No the hotel room scene where Bond kills the professor, they apparently were too lazy or unable to provide the professor with the proper gun - and didn't bother to change the script. The professor has a 1911 (whose slide is not back, indicating it's not necessarily empty, as the script requires), not a revolver. Yet Bond calmly lets him retrieve and try to shoot the gun (click), and says "but that's a Smith & Wesson, and you've had your six" before dispatching him with the suppressed PPK (?). Really egregious gun-accuracy there, yet the scene still works (and was apparently shocking by the norms of the time, for the cold-blooded kill). 184 Guys, is Eskimo a racist slur?
I'm a Southerner and I like to think I'm up to date on all my slurs. When did Eskimo become a slur? ==== They're now called Inuit; I think eskimo was a [Cree?] Indian word for 'blubber-eaters' and not what they called themselves. So it's now Inuit. In Alaska though, one of our Moronettes has said in discussing this in the past at the HQ, there is a group that is called Eskimos. And not to be confused with Innu who are a group from Northern Quebec and Labrador. Posted by: andycanuck It's more complicated than that. Only white people and a few "woke" natives insist that Eskimo is now to be deemed a slur. The problem is that "Inuit" in a specific tribal name, and not all people formerly classified as "Eskimos" are actually "Inuits." Other northern peoples are Yupiks, Aleuts, Inupiats, etc. who would punch you in the nose if you tried to call the "Inuits," whom they regard as a totally different tribe. So, if you get rid of the sobriquet "Eskimo," there is actually no replacement word that means the same thing. "Eskimo" basically was a catchall term meaning "Any tribe above the Arctic Circle." Not an insult. Posted by: zombie at November 26, 2024 08:34 PM (pMi6S) 230

He spends the first half of the film absolutely dominant, controlling everything and getting the upper hand. Then he runs into a mirror and its all downhill from that point on. Very clever writing, actually. I like From Russia With Love better but Goldfinger is really the ultimate Bond movie. Posted by: Robert at November 26, 2024 08:14 PM (5YOFv) "Supposedly" the term "Eskimo" derived from a Dene Indian word meaning "eaters of raw flesh". To the Dene, it may have been a slur, but the European explorers and settlers just figured, "ah, so that's the name for these folks." White people did not use "Eskimo" as a slur; it was simply the recognized name for those folk. Usually, they were admired for their toughness. The woke white academics who are insisting on deeming "eskimo" to be a colonialist slur are in fact themselves repeating the same exact colonialist arc, once again imposing white naming protocols on a native population. The woke academics' heads would explode if they realized this -- that they are being just as "racist" as the 18th-century Canadian fur-trappers who started saying "Esquimaux" in the first place. The US has never had such a one sided media as we've had over the last decade or so. And we are bombarded with it. Every mainstream network news is leftwing, so are nearly all of the cable networks, virtually all of the print and they do nothing but preach about the horrors of global warming, Ukraine and every other leftwing emergency. And the American people have overwhelmingly rejected them. And they have also rejected Hollywood and all other Hollywood and music influencer including Baldwin. We are done with all of them. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 26, 2024 09:09 PM (dxSpM) Both yes and no. For local and relevant state news this how it was, but for international and US news often the local paper would either have the plates sent down from a large regional paper, or would have those sections printed and sent down by train. At the most breaking news the wire services would send out information by telegraph as well. the local paper in Tenino, where my Grandfather grew up, had a local paper, and the international news and big national news sections were sent down from Olympia and folded into the local paper. Getting pre-set type was another option for a middling big paper too. The Salem Oregon Capital Journal kept a telegrapher on staff until the 40's when they got the teletype (and then kept him on as a sportswriter) to get wire service news.
