The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on any goods coming into the United States from China--over and above any tariffs he has already pledged to impose on Chinese products--as well as a 25 percent tariff on all incoming goods from Canada and Mexico. He cited Beijing's broken promises to stem the flow of fentanyl, while saying that Canada and Mexico have failed to address the problem of illegal immigration through their borders into the United States.
Donald Trump could have endless rounds of meaningless "high level" meetings with those three offending countries. They would go nowhere, and any agreement reached would be violated before the ink is dry. A tariff on the other hand? It is an immediate penalty, and one that is instantly felt by the entire country. Yes, those proposed tariffs will hurt the American consumer too, especially in the short term, as domestic products go up in price. But there is an argument to be made that driving domestic production is a very good thing, and is worth the extra costs associated with that shift. But the geopolitical message sent will be clear and powerful. Stop making illegal immigration into America easy, or you will be considered an enemy. Stop flooding America with fentanyl, or you will be considered an enemy. There are costs associated with every government decision, and an increase in the price of some goods is one of those costs of tariffs. Compared to the incredible mess that is our current chaotic and ineffectual policy in Ukraine, those proposed tariffs will be a paragon of efficiency. They will hurt Canada, because Canada is hurting America. They will hurt Mexico, because Mexico is hurting America. They will hurt China, because China is hurting America. That is their purpose. The Democrat-compliant media will focus on the economic side effects of those tariffs, and downplay their real purpose. They will decry the pain caused in the American heartland...you know, the people whose lives are an afterthought until they can be used as a cudgel with which to beat Donald Trump and the new paradigm. That paradigm is that the people of the United States of America are more important than millions of lawbreakers crashing our border and destroying our traditional way of life. I think that the good people of the heartland will understand and approve of some temporary pain when they can see the obvious and immediate benefits of those tariffs.

I hope so, CBD. I am. . .let's say cautiously optimistic that the 'heartland' will see through any MFM propaganda, as they seem to have during the election. But I believe this is an area where Trump needs to be front and center as a leader / businessman, explaining that America may have to take it in the shorts in the short-term, but the effect of the tariffs will benefit us all in the long term.
But what do I know? I'm just an asshole commenter on a Smart Military Blog.

He's just turning up the heat so Trudeau becomes even more unpopular and gets turfed hard in the next election. Once that happens, and if a sane party gets in, Donald will hopefully back the tariffs off if he likes the next guy.
Trudeau had a meeting with Trump in Canada years back and was very cordial in person, and as soon as Trump was back on Air Force One and flying out, he was blading Trump in the media. Donald remembers that kind of thing and intends to pay him back in spades.
Canada's going to suffer for a while and that's going to suck while it's going on. People need to learn that elections have consequences, and we put a whiny bitch of a man in control of Canada, and now we're going to get bitch-slapped.

I've read stories of people making $250,000 a year in Toronto and deciding to leave. And others who spent everything to get here and can't afford to leave.

Here’s the thing. While the Prime Minister is right that interceptions at the U.S. northern border are low compared to the U.S. southern border, interceptions have doubled. While the Prime Minister acknowledges 10,000 illegal border crossings in 2023, as of September, media reports indicate that over 20,000 interceptions had already taken place.
Last December, U.S. Senator, Susan Collins, reported that "in the State of Maine, encounters have increased over 450 percent since fiscal year 2021."
Add to that the recent arrest of an ISIS-affiliated Canadian student visa holder from Pakistan who was planning an attack in the U.S. and Canada’s record on border issues under Justin Trudeau’s watch has been bad. So, not as bad as Mexico but the trend lines are hardly worth bragging about.

Steven Green on the Instapundit blog has an article about "Thyssenkrupp", with some sector that makes steel in Germany. They're cutting a good chunk of their employees because of various realities like energy prices and cheaper foreign steel.
There was a related quote: "Economy Minister Robert Habeck said German-made steel should be protected, while standing by Germany’s commitment to secure the sector’s future with more climate-friendly production."
Green's takeway is that you can produce, or you can be climate-friendly, but you can't really do both. But the quote is that Germany, the country, will take action towards steel protectionism. And with part of the problem being cheap steel from Asia, tariffs are probably one of their tools as well.

As we've seen already over the last 24 hours, they can also be used to protect the country from bad foreign actors.
They can be for a new country with a relatively small economy, because it's not that big a hit to the developed economies. That is certainly not the case for us now, so there is a risk of a Hawley-Smoot type reaction. At this point, it's a risk I'm willing to take.
Tariffs are fine as long as they are a means to an end, and don't become a way of life. Unions love them because they make their ridiculous wages more sustainable.

Don't forget Trump got nearly instant Mexican compliance with some of his border demands by briefly closing some border crossings at one point. Dramatic story that was (of course) under-reported to the point of being ignored. But in border cities it was pretty obvious.

I don't know how much more I can handle domestic prices going up. I went out to dinner over the w/e. 2 glasses of domestic wine, shrimp scampi, cheese cake=$59 w/o tip. Used to be I could have that same dinner a couple of years ago for $32. I sure hope President-elect Trump knows what he's doing.

Tariffs are an economic tool. They can either me used wisely or poorly. If a country puts a tariff on one of our industries, say wines as France does, it would be idiotic to give them free access to our markets.
The EU, our great ally, routinely has put tariffs on many of our goods and services. We on the other hand have spent decades allowing them easy access to our markets and then we whine that we are losing our industrial base.
I don't want free trade. I want fair trade. Free trade is a term used by people who have no idea what goes on in international trade.

Sure you can. You can want free, open trade, but when trading partners don't do it, or do other economic BS against your country, you can retaliate with tarrifs. If the government of China directly steals the intellectual property of American companies, or covers for Chinese businesses that do so, maybe tarrifs are an appropriate response. When China slaps extra restrictive requirements on American grain imports, more restrictive than the same grains imported from other nations, maybe tarrifs on Chinese goods is a way to correct the behavior.
When American companies like Apple abandon US manufacturing locations to open factories in China with literal slave labor and anti-suicide nets outside the forced housing, maybe tarrifs are an appropriate response.

Trump's loss in 2020 they expected (the polls said Biden would win by 10! "winning" by 3.5 was fine).
Trump's win in 2024 was something, I think, everyone knew was distinctly possible. You don't switch out opposition candidates against him in freaking July if Trump doesn't have a chance. A lot of people lied to themselves about it, but not at such a deep level that it'll break them, well, any more than they are already broken.

DEF is literally 60 percent water and 40 percent animal urine. It is not only a joke, but guess what happens to that mixture when the temperatures drop below freezing. My diesel had to have the DEF injectors replaced after a hard freeze broke them when the fluid froze. Nice system, taking a nearly indestructible diesel and making it almost as vulnerable as an EV.

I daily drive a '01 Ranger extended cab 2wd 5 speed. 3.0 V6. Only option is AC. 210,000 miles. Wouldn't give it up for anything. Gets 25mpg Hwy and does everything I ask of it. If Ford made another truck like this and priced it at $19,995, but with better MPG they'd sell like hotcakes. I get asked to sell it about every other week.

Gold is a hedge against insecurity and economic chaos. There are some problems with the gold market though, one is that there is about 1/3 of the reserve gold that no one is quite sure where it is. The second is that the central banks all over are fixing the price of gold on the market by all indications. Also, the value may be going up if there really is a move in the next two years to issue US long term Treasuries backed in Gold, which will do incredible things to the world's market, very dislocating.

The thing is, a lot of it has been rationalized as "normal" behavior. We've got seriously insane men who think they're women installed in government and making policy. It's gotten so routine nobody hardly gives it a second thought.
These people will break, if they're not already broken. At it will be (at times) violent as fuck. But I think most of the collapse will be more personal... suicidal even.
Rob Reiner checked himself into "a facility" because he was so agitated about Trump he couldn't deal with it. So, yea... there's going to be quite the mental meltdown over the next 4 years.

My favorite black market is the "dollar blue" exchange of Argentine Pesos to USD that shows the actual cost of AR$ since there is no penalty to engaging in it, outside of the cost of trading fees for going in and out of USD. That is required since at the moment all contracts in Argentina must be carried out in Argentine pesos to be considered legal and valid.

Gold is a hedge against insecurity and economic chaos. There are some problems with the gold market though, one is that there is about 1/3 of the reserve gold that no one is quite sure where it is. The second is that the central banks all over are fixing the price of gold on the market by all indications. Also, the value may be going up if there really is a move in the next two years to issue US long term Treasuries backed in Gold, which will do incredible things to the world's market, very dislocating.

There is NO WAY for a migrant caravan to cross Mexico without the active support of the Mexican government. Enforcement at our border means enforcement at their border as well.

You are neglecting the facts that Mexico imports nothing from us while we take in 35% from them, plus another 15% in remittances, et al. In addition, globalists like Germany invest billions in Mexico to get to our markets. Completely shut the border down and Florida orange farmers are the immediate beneficiaries. One way trade deficits are simply the Marshall Plan that never ends and we lose or start wars. This is economic leverage at its finest and the most potent weapon we have.
