Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on any goods coming into the United States from China--over and above any tariffs he has already pledged to impose on Chinese products--as well as a 25 percent tariff on all incoming goods from Canada and Mexico. He cited Beijing's broken promises to stem the flow of fentanyl, while saying that Canada and Mexico have failed to address the problem of illegal immigration through their borders into the United States. Donald Trump could have endless rounds of meaningless "high level" meetings with those three offending countries. They would go nowhere, and any agreement reached would be violated before the ink is dry. A tariff on the other hand? It is an immediate penalty, and one that is instantly felt by the entire country. Yes, those proposed tariffs will hurt the American consumer too, especially in the short term, as domestic products go up in price. But there is an argument to be made that driving domestic production is a very good thing, and is worth the extra costs associated with that shift. But the geopolitical message sent will be clear and powerful. Stop making illegal immigration into America easy, or you will be considered an enemy. Stop flooding America with fentanyl, or you will be considered an enemy. There are costs associated with every government decision, and an increase in the price of some goods is one of those costs of tariffs. Compared to the incredible mess that is our current chaotic and ineffectual policy in Ukraine, those proposed tariffs will be a paragon of efficiency. They will hurt Canada, because Canada is hurting America. They will hurt Mexico, because Mexico is hurting America. They will hurt China, because China is hurting America. That is their purpose. The Democrat-compliant media will focus on the economic side effects of those tariffs, and downplay their real purpose. They will decry the pain caused in the American heartland...you know, the people whose lives are an afterthought until they can be used as a cudgel with which to beat Donald Trump and the new paradigm. That paradigm is that the people of the United States of America are more important than millions of lawbreakers crashing our border and destroying our traditional way of life. I think that the good people of the heartland will understand and approve of some temporary pain when they can see the obvious and immediate benefits of those tariffs. I hope so, CBD. I am. . .let's say cautiously optimistic that the 'heartland' will see through any MFM propaganda, as they seem to have during the election. But I believe this is an area where Trump needs to be front and center as a leader / businessman, explaining that America may have to take it in the shorts in the short-term, but the effect of the tariffs will benefit us all in the long term. 24. Tariffs are done through regulatory agencies, such as the commerce department, federal trade, commission, etc.. so the president works through those agencies and that’s how they set tariffs. You can search through the Federal Trade Commission possibly the commerce department and treasury department and you can see what tariffs we currently have in place and for how long they’re never a permanent tariff they’ve always got periods in which they will go back for review to see if they need to be removed increased, etc.

I doubt Donald expects Canada to do anything concrete . We can't secure outflow out of a 5,525 mile long mostly unsecured border short of building one very massive wall and that's not feasible.
He's just turning up the heat so Trudeau becomes even more unpopular and gets turfed hard in the next election. Once that happens, and if a sane party gets in, Donald will hopefully back the tariffs off if he likes the next guy. Trudeau had a meeting with Trump in Canada years back and was very cordial in person, and as soon as Trump was back on Air Force One and flying out, he was blading Trump in the media. Donald remembers that kind of thing and intends to pay him back in spades. Canada's going to suffer for a while and that's going to suck while it's going on. People need to learn that elections have consequences, and we put a whiny bitch of a man in control of Canada, and now we're going to get bitch-slapped. Same source says Trudeau brought up the border stats with Trump, comparing Mexico and Canada. Chrystia Freeland’s office notes in a separate statement, US border guards encountered 2,475,669 coming from Mexico Duncan Dee @duncandee 3h Here’s the thing. While the Prime Minister is right that interceptions at the U.S. northern border are low compared to the U.S. southern border, interceptions have doubled. While the Prime Minister acknowledges 10,000 illegal border crossings in 2023, as of September, media reports indicate that over 20,000 interceptions had already taken place. Last December, U.S. Senator, Susan Collins, reported that "in the State of Maine, encounters have increased over 450 percent since fiscal year 2021." Add to that the recent arrest of an ISIS-affiliated Canadian student visa holder from Pakistan who was planning an attack in the U.S. and Canada’s record on border issues under Justin Trudeau’s watch has been bad. So, not as bad as Mexico but the trend lines are hardly worth bragging about. === Fentanyl pushing is probably the major shot at Justin. The incoming US @realDonaldTrump administration has valid concerns related to illegal activities at our shared border. We are calling on the federal government to work with the incoming administration to resolve these issues immediately, thereby avoiding any unnecessary tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S. Fortunately, the vast majority of Alberta’s energy exports to the U.S. are delivered through secure and safe pipelines which do not in any way contribute to these illegal activities at the border. Also somewhat related:
Steven Green on the Instapundit blog has an article about "Thyssenkrupp", with some sector that makes steel in Germany. They're cutting a good chunk of their employees because of various realities like energy prices and cheaper foreign steel. There was a related quote: "Economy Minister Robert Habeck said German-made steel should be protected, while standing by Germany’s commitment to secure the sector’s future with more climate-friendly production." Green's takeway is that you can produce, or you can be climate-friendly, but you can't really do both. But the quote is that Germany, the country, will take action towards steel protectionism. And with part of the problem being cheap steel from Asia, tariffs are probably one of their tools as well. Posted by: Another Anon at November 26, 2024 11:22 AM (QNMaY) 79

The Missouri court’s decision to uphold the voter ID law came after heavy criticism from groups arguing that such requirements could disenfranchise voters. However, Bailey’s office successfully presented evidence supporting the law’s necessity and effectiveness in maintaining the integrity of the voting process. The court’s ruling confirmed that the voter ID law does not impose a burden on voters.

You can't preach free markets with one side of your mouth while talking tariffs with the other.
Posted by: JBirks Sure you can. You can want free, open trade, but when trading partners don't do it, or do other economic BS against your country, you can retaliate with tarrifs. If the government of China directly steals the intellectual property of American companies, or covers for Chinese businesses that do so, maybe tarrifs are an appropriate response. When China slaps extra restrictive requirements on American grain imports, more restrictive than the same grains imported from other nations, maybe tarrifs on Chinese goods is a way to correct the behavior. When American companies like Apple abandon US manufacturing locations to open factories in China with literal slave labor and anti-suicide nets outside the forced housing, maybe tarrifs are an appropriate response. Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, criticized discussions around transferring nuclear weapons from the U.S. to Ukraine. Medvedev wrote: "American politicians and journalists are seriously discussing the consequences of transferring nuclear weapons to Kyiv. It seems that my sad joke about crazy, senile Biden, who decided to leave this life gracefully, taking a significant part of humanity with him, is turning into a frightening reality." "Give nuclear weapons to a country at war with the largest nuclear power? The idea is so absurd that it raises suspicions about a paranoid psychosis in Joe The Walking Dead and all those who would advise such a move." He continued, "Yet I must comment on the nonsense: 1) The very threat of transferring nuclear weapons to the Kyiv regime can be considered preparation for nuclear conflict with Russia; 2) The actual transfer of such weapons can be equated to an act of attack on our country under article 19 of the Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence. The second is that the central banks all over are fixing the price of gold on the market by all indications. Also, the value may be going up if there really is a move in the next two years to issue US long term Treasuries backed in Gold, which will do incredible things to the world's market, very dislocating. I have no complaints about the volume and quality of the 2024 meltdowns. While the night of the election produced less shock, the "I think I'll take a video of myself crying" genre has been rich, deep, and lasting.
I tend to agree that the cultural Left is a bit burned out. What we have to worry about is the true Commies, the Antifa types, who know that they came within a hair of absolute power and missed. They're not going to make crying videos. They are going to plan destruction. Our side needs to be ready. Posted by: Splunge at November 26, 2024 12:15 PM (hmKaK) 371

I don't discount a significant portion of the public having some sort of mental breakdown as Trump assumes office and thereafter.
The thing is, a lot of it has been rationalized as "normal" behavior. We've got seriously insane men who think they're women installed in government and making policy. It's gotten so routine nobody hardly gives it a second thought. These people will break, if they're not already broken. At it will be (at times) violent as fuck. But I think most of the collapse will be more personal... suicidal even. Rob Reiner checked himself into "a facility" because he was so agitated about Trump he couldn't deal with it. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at November 26, 2024 12:09 PM (D6PGr) well, the price includes the cost of evading the government's prohibitions and the risk of getting caught. My favorite black market is the "dollar blue" exchange of Argentine Pesos to USD that shows the actual cost of AR$ since there is no penalty to engaging in it, outside of the cost of trading fees for going in and out of USD. That is required since at the moment all contracts in Argentina must be carried out in Argentine pesos to be considered legal and valid. Posted by: Kindltot at November 26, 2024 12:21 PM (D7oie) 387

Prisons cost money. Mental patients cost money. And there is the issue of recidivism.
So, release the prisoners with the promise they will emigrate to the U.S. Then they become our problem. And no way will you ever send them back. There is NO WAY for a migrant caravan to cross Mexico without the active support of the Mexican government. Enforcement at our border means enforcement at their border as well. We just need to let them know a) we will not accept any more illegal crossers (they will become Mexico's problem) and b) we will punish them for illegal crossers with tariffs. Tell Mexico the tariffs are for the problem they are creating. Posted by: El Mariachi at November 26, 2024 01:23 PM (mvURQ) 406
tariffs do not occur in a vacum as economists ALWAYS assume ... the traiffed countries can do things to offset the tariffs ... Like CHINA did in Trumps 1st term ... they devalued their currency ... which lowered prices for ALL GOODS from China ... a tit for tat tariff like on the EU isn't to raise money or protect US companies ... It would be a hammer to get the EU to eliminate THEIR tariffs, which we have had to live with for decades ... surer NO tariffs would be a wonderful world ... but right its the US thats the NO tariff destination (mostly) ... our goods are hit with unfair tariffs all over the world and have been for decades ...

"Stop flooding America with fentanyl, or you will be considered an enemy."
Fentanyl is manufactured in China - if you want to stop the flow of fentanyl, bomb china, not the cartels. And there are only two main cartels involved with China and the Fentanyl Trade: Sinaloa and Jalisco Cartels. A war against ALL the Cartels would be a Wag the Dog type of event. As was said, only two cartels are mixed up with the Fentanyl Trade. And it totally ignores the cartels that are anti-fentanyl. A war against all the cartels would be Nancy Reagans War on Drugs 2.0. Don't get snookered into pushing Trump to be a war time president. Posted by: mossomo at November 26, 2024 02:32 PM (pky95) 409

Steel and aluminum prices actually fell overall from 2017 to 2020.
You are neglecting the facts that Mexico imports nothing from us while we take in 35% from them, plus another 15% in remittances, et al. In addition, globalists like Germany invest billions in Mexico to get to our markets. Completely shut the border down and Florida orange farmers are the immediate beneficiaries. One way trade deficits are simply the Marshall Plan that never ends and we lose or start wars. This is economic leverage at its finest and the most potent weapon we have.
