Posted by: Lari Pittman at November 28, 2024 09:47 AM (u1uWe)

73 Currin is one of those artists who has wonderful technical skills. Look at the detail and color choices in the painting. It is very realistic. However, he chooses a mocking, smarmy approach to the subject which detracts from the work. The girls are silly (and what the hell is the taller girl doing) and exaggerated and the older woman looks mind dead. It's what I think of as New York/Parisian modern art with a steady backdrop of disdain which is unattractive.

I hope everyone has a pleasant Thanksgiving: family, food and a few prayers.

164 I'd not heard of John Currin, so I looked him up. He's contemporary, born in 1962. He draws on popular art for his themes, but his technique draws on the Flemish masters of the 15th century (though he paints in oil rather than egg tempra). His exaggerated figures remind me of the work of Peter Blume, whose painting "The Rock" hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. FWIW, Currin says that all of his female figures are aspects of his own character; take that for what it's worth.

Stuffing the bird does add to cook time but the flavor makes up for it. If worried, test the stuffing with a thermometer to make sure it is cooked through.

I am eating dinner with an old friend, he made his living selling hearing aids over the Western states, and managing his own salesmen. He said the most important thing is to smile, and get others to smile. He spent a lot of time waiting in airports, and he tasked his sales people to see what percentage of people they could get to smile back at them while waiting in airports, the most stressful place you pay to get into. He said it was the best sales tool they had.

You don't really need to smile big, just draw your ears back and up a bit, smile just a little with closed lips, open your eyes a tad, and raise your brows just a touch, and people will smile back spontaneously. It is amazing.

Posture is important too, don't slouch like a question mark if you can avoid it.

Anyways, a very happy Thanksgiving everyone.

We're celebrating Christmas here in my part of Canada. Our friend's from across the street are coming over because the kids like to decorate the tree. So it evolved into a low key Christmas in October or November affair. Just 3 quick pleasant hours.

And from GatewayPundit.

Trump posted the statement to Truth Social on Thanksgiving Eve.

Trump wrote:

Happy Thanksgiving to all, including to the Radical Left Lunatics who have worked so hard to destroy our Country, but who have miserably failed, and will always fail, because their ideas and policies are so hopelessly bad that the great people of our Nation just gave a landslide victory to those who want to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Trump added, “Don’t worry, our Country will soon be respected, productive, fair, and strong, and you will be, more than ever before, proud to be an American!”

193 Yeah, but I was told it was a bad idea to cook a turkey with stuffing in it. Something about the insulating effects of stuffing, it being a bacteria sponge in that environment, and not getting sufficiently cooked...
Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 28, 2024 10:14 AM (ynpvh)

The stuffing goes in right before popping it in the oven.

The problem is when people stuff it and then let it sit; e.g. overnight. Butterball used to have a warning about that.

Sounds like a killer combination!

I had a brother-in-law with a resting scowl face. Friends at my wedding referred to him as "the smoker" because he looked like that dude from The X Files (except 6'4"). He had a grumpy attitude to back it up. However, once he had grandkids I witnessed his smile when he played with them, and it was glorious.

196 had.

You don't really need to smile big, just draw your ears back and up a bit, smile just a little with closed lips, open your eyes a tad, and raise your brows just a touch, and people will smile back spontaneously. It is amazing.

Posture is important too, don't slouch like a question mark if you can avoid it.

Both my grandfathers had a very distant, stern attitude towards their children. It was important to raise weaklings.

BUT, with the grandkids, the rules were completely different. Very affectionate, indulgent, lax discipline. My maternal grandfather repeatedly went to bat for me when I did something naughty at their house, totally perplexing my grandmother who watched this guy deploy an actual belt on his kids.

I was never that stern as a father, but I'm much more of a pushover to the grandkids.

For many songs, the writer had a specific story behind the lyrics. Listeners thought will come up with their own interpretation to fit their situation. Many though like to know exactly what the writer was thinking of and its meaning.

I think art is the same. The true meaning of the painting is the artist's but others can look at it and interpret it personally and that's okay.

I agree; it's pretty obviously a mean-spirited parody. The artist is talented enough, but choose to paint an ugly scene.

A quick perusal of Wikipedia (so you know it's true) found that John Currin specializes in "politically themed" artwork -- so probably a Commie.

A truism: a rejection of beauty is a rejection of one of the transcendental characteristics of God.
