Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread (11/24/24) DoofHowdy Hordelings, and welcome to the Sunday ONT! A mixed bag of fun and interesting stuff -- at least I hope you think so too. Shall we begin? R.I.P. Chuck Woolery Best State Flags (according to your humble host) Here in Maryland, people are obsessed with the state flag. It’s EVERYWHERE. The MD flag comprises the arms of the Calvert and Crossland families. The combination of symmetry and contrast works very well. There is a specific “official” direction the flag should be oriented (black square in the top left corner). Get that wrong, and many Marylanders will lose their ever-loving mind. Being as objective as possible, I do think it is the best of all of the state flags. 2 – Arizona The state flag consists of alternating red and yellow rays that represent the 13 original colonies and the western setting sun. The red and yellow are based on the colors of the Spanish flag that Coronado carried into the region. The bottom half of the flag is the same color blue found in the U. S. flag. The copper star identifies Arizona as the largest copper producing state in the union. 3 – South Carolina The indigo blue flag of The Palmetto State of course features a palmetto tree. And a crescent. The color and the crescent tie back to Revolutionary War times. A very early version of the flag, designed by Colonel William Moultrie, had the word LIBERTY inside the crescent. It did not have the palmetto. The blue was the color of the SC militia’s uniforms, and the crescent was a part of the insignia on their caps. The palmetto was added during Civil War times, signifying the importance of the palmetto trees as defense against British cannons. See all 50 state flags here. For whatever reason, New Mexico’s flag is often rated very high in these types of lists. I think it’s just kinda “whelming”. Some state flags are honestly just downright boring. Where does your state’s flag rate on the boring to cool scale? I guess you hoseheads from up in the Great White North can chime in on flags up in your neck of the woods if you don’t want to feel left out! Something to make you smile Hero abandoned dog saves 38 other animals and is then adopted herselfA remarkable tale of animal heroism unfolded when a 10-year-old Basset Hound ran away from her neglectful home and saved tens of other animals. The dog, now aptly named Hero, escaped wearing an ID tag that led animal control officers to a house with 38 animals in dire need of rescue. On this day in History: It's official. The song "Popular" was sung publicly, on national radio, on Friday, by Ariana Grande. Not Kammie Harris. And with apologies to A.G,.the entire cast of "Wicked" and Universal Studios, It really is about aptitude, Not just the way you're viewed. Don't be offended by my frank analysis, think of it as personality dialysis. I will refrain from swinging on a chandelier while doing a split. You're welcome. - G.K. There is a specific “official” direction the flag should be oriented (black square in the top left corner). Get that wrong, and many Marylanders will lose their ever-loving mind.
Well, upside-down flags are a distress signal. What do you do if your flag is symmetrical, like Japan's, so it's the same upside-down as rightside-up? Or if you're Indonesia, and turning it upside-down just turns it into Poland's flag? And vice-versa. Posted by: mikeski at November 24, 2024 10:20 PM (DgGvY) 97

I think the Nunavut flag has an image of the rock man from the Thor movies.
-------- The official flag of Nunavut was proclaimed on 1 April 1999, along with the territory of Nunavut in Canada. It features a red inuksuk—a traditional Inuit land marker—and a blue star, which represents the Niqirtsuituq, the North Star, and the leadership of elders in the community. The colours blue and gold represent the riches of the land, sea and sky. It was adopted following a process where input was sought from local communities and submissions were solicited from the Canadian public. === A style of cairn, yes, imitating a man. State seals (no, not the arf-arf-arf kind) on state flags are boring. At a distance you can hardly tell one from another. Great flags have distinctive, ideally unique, designs with few, high-contrast colors. I have to forgive the state seal flag states, though. It is difficult to come up with a distinctive design along with good (and few) colors when there are so many states.

Add lemon juice, black pepper and the bouillon and a little dried basil. I cook uncolver on high, stirring occassionally, until the liquid cooks off, or almost cooks off. The beans should be done but nor mush. If still a little raw, cover and vook on look for a short time. I hate muchy string beans. Once beans are cooked, toss in lemon zest and almonds and stir to mix. That's the basics. Questions? Posted by: RickZ at November 25, 2024 01:26 AM (gKDq2) 357

Antique furniture? Ha! I worked in a plant that made structural laminated beams. Occasionally a customer asked for a "rough timber" finish on the beams.
We had a huge electric chainsaw mounted on a wheeled carriage. Two of us would push the chainsaw along, using it to gnaw off an eighth of an inch off the exposed surfaces of the beams. We produced an epic amount of sawdust. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at November 25, 2024 01:27 AM (c9fCQ) 359

Posted by: 13times at November 25, 2024 01:26 AM (JqbO1) After The Split, taking the California ports would be a huge project, and there's no large ports in Oregon. Therefore, we'll need to invade Washington and take Seattle, driving a wave of rainbow-haired refugees before us. I'm sure Portland would be happy to take them in. RickZ, Perhaps minor questions, but my cooktop does not offer vook or look settings, is there a conversion chart that I might consult? Thanks for the recipe, they do sound delish, I think I might shake things up a bit and try them. This will entail yet another trip to the grocery store tomorrow. It is not so painful if you shop in $80.00 increments.

People have been talking about splitting California into two or three separate entities for decades. Ceding the coastline/ports to leftist rats is silly-minded tomfoolery. Posted by: 13times ============== That's not the split that's been proposed. It's North and South, above San Francisco (which makes you wonder why bother since the South part will be SF, LA, and an even smaller population of inlanders than before to resist them. Posted by: TRex at November 24, 2024 10:11 My family surname goes back to a Scottish clan. The old family crest shows a standing bare breasted woman, with the motto "Amo", Latin for I love. I really should dig into the origins of that. But it seems self-explanatory. Plus I was breastfed. Hey, this is just my heritage. I have a Readers' Digest Dictionary since in high school. There is an irony here as the dictionary is well over 3-1/4 inches thick, so not abridged. A real dictionary with hard to find words. From Readers' Digest. Go figure. On the inside, it says it's a third edition Funk and Wagnalls from 1969, under the Readers' Digest name. The fact that I still have it tells you it's a good dictionary. Posted by: RickZ at November 25, 2024 02:00 AM (gKDq2) 377

Current proposals include a coastal-inland division. It's stupid on the level of epic stupidity. That's being run up the flagpole.
Every proposal leaves the radical left in charge of our ports. Unless one considers Elk Snout Harbor a viable international port. Posted by: 13times at November 25, 2024 02:04 AM (UGS7U) 379
