Strange Geography – Kentucky Bend

While watching a University of Kentucky basketball game recently (#CatsBy90!), I noticed that there is now a watermark in the shape of the state of Kentucky on the floor at Rupp Arena.
doof-rupp-full.jpg

This is new for 2024 at the legendary college basketball arena. Something that caught my eye was an attention to detail that falls into the “If you know, you know” category. At the bottom left of the watermark, there is a circle which is disconnected from the rest of the watermark.

doof-rupp-bend.jpg

What may appear to be a mistake is actually a very astute accuracy. There is a very small part of Kentucky which is not connected to the rest of the state.

doof-ky-bend.jpg

This sparse and serene landscape is as remote as an island, and to get here you have to mean it. "Kentucky Bend," or “New Madrid Bend,” is encircled on the north, east, and west by a snaking hairpin turn of the Mississippi River, while the southern portion is joined to the state of Tennessee. It’s literally an exclave of Kentucky, 30 square miles of land completely cut off from the rest of the state, all formed by a combination of surveyor mishaps and raging earthquakes.

Kentucky's anomalous peninsula projecting into the Mississippi River, site of legendary earthquakes and local feuds.
Jutting out into the middle of the Mississippi River, the tiny community on the Kentucky Bend consists of a smattering of houses, cotton fields, and a lone cemetery. Yet this little spit of land has fascinated outsiders for well over a century.
The Mississippi River, central America’s preeminent determiner of East-West boundaries, was useless in marking ownership when it came to the Kentucky Bend. Missouri and Tennessee fought over the Bend until the mid-1800’s, when Tennessee finally relinquished its claim to Kentucky, which came out on top thanks to latitudinal jurisdiction.

Read the two linked articles for more information. Quite fascinating.

37 Another weird Kentucky geography fact. Adam Dunn was a big outfielder/first baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. He was playing a home game and hit a homer over the right field seats which ricocheted off a river walk and landed in the Ohio River. On that part of the river the Kentucky -Ohio border is against the Ohio side. Therefore Dunn is the only player to hit a ball out of a state

I watched 'Saw 6' just a few minutes ago. I'd like that to be how the DUGE works.

You know, most of the people involved and 'victims' were corporate or govt people. So you wanted them to suffer. Well I did.

Except....spoiler alert for 'Saw 6' so go away...

Now.

The villain, was ultimately a government employee.

Here's what I found funny..in his off hours, he kidnapped about 12 people, kept them alive and drugged, set up all the 'choices' and put all the bodies in place.

Plus, he lived the American Dream and did something nasty to his boss. Knives were involved. Throats. Fire. But anyways..

That is the type of employee the DOGE needs to have on staff to work 80 hours a week with no pay for fun to get rid of government people crew.

Their blood letting would just be for catharctic freedom.

And drunken entertainment.

I hate to break it to you but Norks are not now, nor have ever been in Russia. It is an info op, and a lame one.

The Russians are not the Soviets, do not use human wave assaults, and are very cleverly, and astutely chiseling their way into Ukraine's defenses. They've turned the flank and are sweeping the southern trench lines from the east.

The advance is slow, methodical, and effective. Note how they shift around fortified settlements and isolate them with fire control of the outlying roads before making their move. When Chasov Yar falls, that whole sector will collapse - there's nothing behind it but farm fields.

New Jersey has a very small corner of land across the Delaware river on the Delaware side. Not entirely sure why, or at least I cannot remember. It's not like the river changed course. It's like a 200 foot wide strip, I think, for a quarter of a mile. I could be off a fair bit though.

No one actually lives in that chunk of New Jersey... I think Delaware tries to keep the insanity confined on the other side of the river.

(I never brought up politics with her, she can't shut up about it so it was all her decision) Any way the letter is almost a parody of the lib rants we've been seeing with one Dem talking point after another, all complete distorted or a outright falsehoods. Always amusing to see this on-line but it is a little disturbing when it is directed at you (a white male who is directly to blame for this disaster)

I gave up on her years ago or any hope of having a good relationship again but was consider responding. Do I

1. Reply with a point by point rebuttal with calm, well reasoned and referenced debunking of idiotic accusations. I really doubt it would make he slights impression and would be dismissed as Fox news propaganda, more evidence of my racism
2. Ignore and forget about it(most likely)

188 There's also a chunk of North East Africa called Bir Tawil that's disputed (sort of) between Egypt and Sudan, with the peculiar distinction that neither of them wants it. The deal is that there are two different borders drawn at different times, and depending on which one you choose, the country that gets Bir Tawil loses out on another piece of land that both countries *do* want.

I believe there have been attempts to colonize the region, given that it's no-man's-land/terra nullius, but apparently neither country is gonna go along with that. Also, this area is a shithole even by the standards of Northeast Africa. No roads, no water, no population... even the local desert tribes pass through there as fast as they can on the way to some slightly less shitholey region.

The UK and probably the French or at least Brussels promised those lands, those minerals and that labor force to someone in return for the loans to Zelensky and the Ukrainians. The City of London banks got guarantees on the loans they issued, and Zelensky has defaulted. Because of the guarantees, the Exchequer is on the hook to the banks, which means Parliament is going to have to screw it out of the British taxpayer, which is what Starmer is apparently trying to do right now.
The big banking money people are thinking they can screw the money out of the taxpayers, since that is what they always did, but I am reminded of a time when the Knights Templar decided to call in debts against the French king to reconquer the Holy land, and wound up having their debt cancelled when the order was executed out of hand.

Sure, plenty. But without Lenin and his charisma, the only other revolutionary who might have pulled it off was Trotsky. Stalin was a nobody in 1917. Though Trotsky was efficient at organizing the Red Army, he didn't have the 'it' factor that Lenin had. With Trotsky, there probably would have been a power struggle much earlier, again with Stalin out of the picture. People like Derzhinsky or Tomsky, Rykov, etc. Who knows? Pure speculation. Lenin was the real deal, though, and proved it. His legacy of misery lasted 80 years.

Only understanding film clips and the writings of those who experienced Lenin in person, it's something we have a hard time understanding today. It was his power of oratory. Same as Hitler. Would there have been a Nazi Party without Hitler? Sure, there already was one which Hitler joined. But it would not have been the same Nazi Party? Who knows if a Goebbels or a Himmler would have made the cut in a different Nazi government, if one took over. Goering? Probably being a military hero and all. But it was Hitler, just like Lenin, who brought it all together. It's a skill/luck few people have, being true revolutionaries. Most play-act.

Not a clue, but the Poles had developed a Franco-Polish relationship in the 20's which would have gone a bit to create a block in central Europe, which the Brits felt was essential for controlling Eurasia; west of the Urals was a good path from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and that would have been a barrier to Russia and isolated the Balkans. After the war that is what Stalin wanted and wound up with.

470 That giant nutcracker is nightmare fuel. I hate those fucking things.
Fun Fact! My dad liked that type of nutcracker and had a big collection of them. He put them out at Christmas every year. They were stationed on a high shelf. High enough that someone had to stand on barstools to put them in place. And that someone had to walk on several barstools to get them all lined up on the shelf. Dad knew I didn't like the creepy fuckers and always, as in EVERY YEAR, expected ME to put them on the shelf. There were other people in the room. People who were unwrapping the nutcracker brigade, people handing them up to me, people who said stupid shit like "hey mayhem, you're doing that without a net!" But did they have to walk around on barstools setting creepy fucking nutcracker on a shelf every December and then walk around on barstools to take the damned things down in January? No. No they did not. They refused to do it because they said "it's her job".
And Pappymayhem laughed his ass off about it.

What worries me is the speed that magnetic north is traveling toward Siberia. If it keeps on going we may have a magnetic shift in the poles (it's happened before) and our electronics, maybe even us will be por cacada.

501 Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what Moltov tasted of desire
He holds with those who favor fire.
But if Trotsky had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

503 The earth's tilt, ~23 degrees, has a wobble to it. This affects the albedo and so makes ice ages occur regularly every ~125k years.

Reduce the human population to more manageable levels! Say, a 75% reduction. It's for your own good, Global Citizen.

Do the Dennis Miller approach: Agree with her ("You may have something there") then steer away to other non-political topics. It defuses the arguments they want to have
