Sequence of maturation of a single bloom

Happy Saturday, everyone! Have you had a chance to go outside? Have you been traveling? Today's opening photos (and those below) are from a lurker. The Horde is wonderful.

Do you recognize that flower? I've grown it.

A couple more photos from our lurker:

Young stag walking on the 20 foot grassy strip behind our house, bordering the nature reserve/wetland behind the house.

An impressive visitor!

Growing in its natural habitat, an area known for hiking and winter sports. And for a James Bond movie.

Edible Gardening/Putting Things By

From Neal in Israel:

After a long delay, I’d like to submit some photos for your consideration. The delay has been largely due to my preoccupation with concerns arising from the fact that we’re living through a war. A more routine contributing factor was a very tough summer, with long streaks of 30+ centigrade days, which caused distress to a lot of my plantings and thus reduced the number of attractive photo ops.

Here are some things I’d like to show you from the summer:

My lime tree is pretty hardy, and it did reasonably well this year despite the heat.

lime 2.jpg

lime 3.jpg

The limes are gorgeous. More photos coming up from Neal later.

Time to start reviewing those seed catalogs. Thought about growing Christmas Beans?

There is so much variety among fresh and dried beans.

80 days. Extremely productive, even during the hottest days of summer. Huge seeds - nearly the size of a quarter - with a rich, buttery flavor. Beautiful buff-colored seeds splashed with maroon are particularly good fresh, but also are superb if canned or frozen. Pole.

christmasbea.jpg

I've grown bush limas, but not pole limas. Limas and soybeans do a lot better in high heat than most green beans.

Ah, Nature

My town of 650 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland recently installed a "living shoreline" to mitigate shore erosion and flooding. The result has drawn a lot of new visitors. A very large blue heron is a daily visitor, and there is a lot more bird activity including Canada geese, egrets, and various gulls. I took this pic of the big boy at 7:45 am on Oct. 6.

What a wonderful photo!

If you look closely, he had just caught a fish that's dangling at the tip of his beak.

Hi Katy -

I’m not a regular contributor, but I thought I’d send along this photo of my climbing rose that is still blooming!

Thanks, I enjoy your thread.

Gorgeous. Anything going on in your garden? Putting up decorations?

how do you tell if the garlic is from china? They have no stalk. They chop the stalks off in order to lessen shipping cost. When you're shipping thousands of pounds of garlic, even the small stalk stubs add weight.

21 From Boise area: lows 23-36 F, highs 41-50. Our area's under an inversion layer, so air quality will be a bit sketchy until the next front blows in, maybe a week.

It took several sessions, but we got all the Christmas lights up - one session for around the door, one for the two pillars, a separate wreath-making day, then a last session to hang the wreath.

Still raking... we filled 4 leaf-cages, but they've settled a bit, so maybe we can shred a few more compostable leaves and stuff them on top. Otherwise, it's leaf bags - 63 done so far... Today was the last curbside pickup day. We only have 2 more weeks, then the dumpsters at the local park-N-ride go away too.

I've been making peppermint bark as gifts for friends, and we are blessed with a lot of friends, so I'll be making a bunch more.

25 Thanks for the garden thread, KT!

That flower at the top is gorgeous, as are the limes and the rose blooming.

My aunt gave me my late uncle's Christmas cactus. She sweetly wrote out the instructions for watering it and filled a pitcher with the nutrient mixture. I know nothing about cactuses like this, but I managed to get it home in the snow.

The cold meant I could burn hornets nests. Wow! I had no idea that hornets could excavate soil. There was a five-tier nest in one flower pot! Afterward I filled it with compost and soil, then moved it to the front garden.

30 To all of those who face difficulties in their lives, enjoy the gardening and puttering, and the pet threads. In these photographs, we see reminders that the world is a wonderful place, and that miracles do happen.

On the other hand, life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy Shit, ... What a Ride!"

I am partially joking, I have trees, a section out to the drip line under the eaves, a couple of paths including the one to the wood shed to keep my feet out of the mud in the winter, and of course all the roses and the currants.
I will also be refilling my worm bin after I dig it out this winter, and any extras can top off the compost heap.

Posted by: Kindltot at November 30, 2024 02:45 PM (D7oie)

34 also, if you buy garlic you will eventually find the cloves are starting to sprout. You can plant those, or if you don't want to wait, just break the whole thing into individual cloves and plant anyways. That is what the farmers do.

In Oregon there are always a lot of fields planted to garlic, but we don't have a garlic industry. The farmers plant the cloves, and then dig them up in the summer, and the cloves are shipped to California where they grow in soil where they do much better, and come out white, instead of tannish like the clay here stains them. Seed garlic is pretty much planting garlic.
The farmers don't raise garlic successive years on the same fields. It is considered that it won't grow well a second year. Garlic is used as a fallow type crop.

35 Hour of the Wolf. My mom was the gardener, she loved her flowers, especially the tulips, but she was also adventeruous and took up horse jumping in her 40s. When I did her funeral folder I grabbed from a mem the quote "Life should not be journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride" as a filler, I figured I'd find something more appropriate if dad didn't like it but he said "its perfect That's Gail"

36 I may have gone a bit crazy in ordering Spring Bulbs this year, but I want to be able to look out the window by my chair and see lots of pretty flowers as spring arrives this year.

Will leave it to our yard service to plant them all.

Told Mr. TiFW that I am going to be spending lots of money over the next few months and then he won't have to worry about it any more. Unless the next Mrs. iFW is a bigger spender than I am 🤣🤣🤣

I admit stealing the second half from a meme. I liked that one once I saw it, along with the one talking about people who prioritized their health above everything and finding out, on their death bed, that they were dying of nothing.

The first part, however, is just me. I've had ups and downs, faced death, wrote the obituary for my father, currently unemployed, but searching. Even so, life is still worth living, and is still a lot of fun. Not only am I still learning, and laughing at myself, but laughing at and with the world.
