Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Has anything filled you with wonder this year?I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.I think that many people have been surprised by many things lately. Some have been happy about their surprises and some have been very sad about their surprises. But has anything moved you to a sense of wonder? One thing that has filled me with wonder is that IT IS ASSORTED BILLIONAIRES who have been supporting our civil liberties, such as the right to free speech. Elon Musk went through a lot of pain and financial loss when he took over Twitter to protect the free speech rights of the Babylon Bee. DOGE is a big deal, promising to free us from a lot of excess regulation. It is also led by billionaires. (Chris Rufo, a former leftist activist, has some cautions). And then there is the push-back against the Biden Administration by several tech billionaires: Tech Billionaire Tells Joe Rogan the Govt. Plan 'to Control AI' is Why He Left WH Meeting, Endorsed Trump "They [Biden officials] said don't even start startups - there's just no way that they can succeed - there's no way that we're going to permit that to happen."Perhaps one of the most welcome surprises of the 2024 election cycle was the large number of Democrats and/or progressives who threw their support behind President-elect Donald Trump. The cumulative damage to the U.S. after four years of progressive rule, the deceitful way it had been implemented, and the speed with which it occurred, left even some lifelong Democrats disaffected. Silicon Valley venture capitalist Marc Andreessen was among this group. During a Tuesday interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, Andreessen described the moment he decided to leave the Democratic Party. In the spring, he had participated in a series of White House meetings about the future of AI. Over the course of their discussions, Biden officials fleshed out “their plan to control AI through government regulatory capture.” Horrified by the administration’s intentions, Andreesen walked out and endorsed Trump. What had left the tech billionaire so spooked? Andreessen explained: The AI thing was very alarming. We had meetings this spring that were the most alarming meetings I’ve ever been in. Where they were taking us through their plans, and it was – basically just full government – full government control – like this sort of thing, there will be a small number of large companies that will be completely regulated and controlled by the government, they told us. They said don’t even start startups – there’s just no way that they can succeed – there’s no way that we’re going to permit that to happen. The details are very creepy. Like this: Andreessen also claimed that the Biden administration has “debanked” more than 30 tech startups, including crypto companies. Debanking means that a bank will suddenly close an individual’s or an organization’s account, or refuse to open an account for a new customer. This typically occurs when a person or an entity is seen as a risk “legally, financially, or to the bank’s reputation.” Under the current administration, debanking was used as a means of control. The use of debanking as a control mechanism began under the Obama Administration, Andreessen noted. It was called “Operation Choke Point.” The administration started to debank “marijuana businesses, escort businesses and gun shops.” . . This administration [Biden] extended that concept to apply it to tech founders, crypto founders and just generally political opponents. That’s been like super pernicious. Operation Choke Point 1.0 was 15 years ago against the pot and the guns. Choke Point 2.0 is primarily against their political enemies and then to their disfavored tech startups. … We’ve had like 30 tech founders debanked in the last four years. It’s been a big recurring pattern. This is one of the reasons we ended up supporting Trump. We can’t live in this world. We can’t live in a world where somebody starts a company that’s a completely legal thing and they literally get sanctioned and embargoed through the United States government through a completely unaccountable [authority]. By the way, no due process. . .How do you interpret the possible order for Google to sell Chrome, given the news above? The ACLU has a battle-tested playbook to fight back - and win - against a second Trump term. We took legal action against the first Trump administration 434 times and we will do it again. Join us. Willowed post...
People are stupid and never learn as evidence, the people of Travis county in the AustinISD voted for a tax increase to pay for "teacher raises" since they just can't afford to be a teacher with the high cost of living and inflation. Most of the money that actually stays will probably end up paying for administrative cost or unfunded pensions.. My property taxes went up over $2300 from last year. The worst part is the school district only keeps 24% of that because we have recapture at the state level. But it's all Abbott's fault for not funding the schools enough and pushing school vouchers... My husband is correct that this whole proposition never should have made it to the ballot and those who knowingly pushed it on us are really at fault but voters ultimately voted for it without knowing what it was really about. Tammy, obviously it's hard to know - or in this case even explain - what's going on, but appears that the Turkish-backed "rebels" have taken most of Aleppo, while the US-backed SDF has the airport and as of yesterday was holding/protecting some minority neighborhoods (religious/ethnic minorities). Russian and Syrian aircraft bombed some spots in Aleppo this morning.
The action's moving on, to Hama, where there is video of regime forces gettin' out of dodge. And Idlib governorate, a long hotly contested area bordering Turkey, is reportedly fully under non-regime control now. Just have to wait and see if the regime still has the coherence to draw a line somewhere - and if the "rebels" can sustain what they're doing, and/or not turn on each other. The mental meltdown on the Left is hilarious, and continues. It’s different than 2016; then they thought it was a fluke and they could still win; now they know they’ve lost, and the bitterness and desperation is overwhelming.
Joy Reid, who knows she’s going to be fired any day now, unleashed the most bitter, venomous hate filled Thanksgiving message I’ve ever seen - even Jeffrey Dahmer would have been more civil than that. It was so over the top that it’s actually quite funny in its way. I think the only reason she hasn’t been fired yet is because they whoever buys it is going to clean house, so there’s no point to go to the trouble putting someone else there before that happens. As I said yesterday with regard to the Andreesen meeting and government plans to control AI by limiting it to a few big companies willing to do the government's bidding, this is the dictionary definition of fascism. Something has been nagging at me since the election.
KH told her supporters to leave the hall around 11 or so IIRC, she said she'd have news for them around 3. So I thought: here we go, the "ballot drops" are coming... News Nation was the first network to call the election for Trump, around 1:30 a.m. I think Fox followed shortly thereafter. Reading Cyrano de Bergerac. Learning a little Latin and seeing both the amazing continuity and sheer alienness of ideas across time. Great point. Earlier this year, I read City of God, by St. Augustin, and found it fascinating that someone from 2 millennia ago asked a lot of the same questions we do, and thought in similar patterns, except when he didn't. "One thing that has filled me with wonder is that IT IS ASSORTED BILLIONAIRES who have been supporting our civil liberties, such as the right to free speech. Elon Musk went through a lot of pain and financial loss when he took over Twitter to protect the free speech rights of the Babylon Bee."
I always thought that, if Twitter were an honest broker about the bot situation and how highly-inflated its value was ($44 billion?), and instead actually lowed the selling price to Musk, things would have been very different. He'd run it as a company, maybe keeping things going, fiddling with monetization to see how to make it profitable. Instead, they went "F*'k You, Pay Me" with the contract. And if he didn't go through with the purchase, he'd still be on the hook for the "Pay" part. so he was stuck with a $44 Billion hit to his net worth purchasing a pig in a poke. Except he knows there's a problem with the pig, and they extracting too much from it. So it's a sunk cost. Probably will never recover it from Twitter/X. What to do? Well, it's now his toy to play with. And he's sharing that toy with us. Posted by: Another Anon at November 30, 2024 11:46 AM (QNMaY) 94

I saw an interesting clip in which a "reporter" asked Pierre Poilievre whether he thought he could work with Trump, who is apparently a "transactional" leader. I'm in wonder at the technology in my life that's makes so many things effortless.
On Thanksgiving day Offspring Number One flew to Alaska to start his professional career. Three flights and four airports. Before I dropped him off at airport #1 he shared his location with me on Google Maps. Depending on my level of obsessiveness I could watch and see when he went through security or when he was walking to board. Then I could use websites to monitor the plane in flight as well as the status of the connecting flights. Providentially I awoke at 3:35 AM to see his location on a street near the hotel. Ten minutes later I saw he was inside the hotel and I could go back to sleep assured he had made the journey safe and sound. Yeah. I think back to previous decades and all of the fretting, worrying and not knowing. I'm in wonder at it all. So now I'm in my living room checking to see if my local Wallymart has Italian green beans in stock, and on what aisle will I find them. All with a few taps on the Omniscient Glowing Rectangle. They said don’t even start startups – there’s just no way that they can succeed – there’s no way that we’re going to permit that to happen.
Interesting. Apple Computer was a start-up, Amazon was a start-up, Facebook was a start-up, Twitter was a start-up. Going back 100 years, almost all the companies that we now know as successful were small start-ups. That was the American dream, the American spirit. This used to be encouraged. It was what made America great. "Land of opportunity". But now after the Long March Through the Institutions succeeded, the Left wants to crush that American ideal. Hopefully this election result is the first step in removing those opportunity-crushing tyrants from power and getting America back to the land of opportunity and innovation. I use ChatGPT a lot for work. Pre gpt, Id have to Google what I needed then go through a few things, scroll up and down until I found it. Sometimes it took many many tries before I got where I needed.
Now I ask what I need. And 10 seconds later I have my answer. Not just a basic answer. But a detailed answer with specifics. And if I need some fine tuning, I’ll have a conversation just like I would with a person trying to get more details. I can also ask what if questions, it’s like debating with a person. It’s pretty fucking awesome. Yeah it’s got the risk for a lot of bad stuff too, obviously. But to just dismiss it as idiots talking on their phone is head in the ass thinking. Also don’t confuse Siri with AI. Siri is a fucking joke and always has been. It’s the one thing Apple can’t do well. Posted by: It is Go Time Donald at November 30, 2024 12:23 PM (Jo6t3) 159

Remember the 6000 votes in MI that flipped to Bidet and were caught by a GOP worker because she knew the voting habits of those precincts? Voters in TX were reporting in real time that their votes were flipping from Trump to Bidet. I printed out a deposition from a guy in Italy who worked for a defense contractor. He described how votes were being manipulated from his country...recall 0bama visiting Tuscany, which is the locus for communism in Italy...and telling reporters he was visiting some "interesting Italians"? Megthered,
My spouse was gardening and was bit several times by a scourge of black flies. Fast forward several days and spouse's hand had a creeping streaking redness, then fever set in. There is a renowned ER doc at our church. That Sunday spouse sheepishly tracked him down for some advice. Er doc became quite alarmed and prescribed a double antibiotic on the spot and called the scrip in that day. He said one more day and spouse could lose the hand. Cellulitis turns to gangrene in hands and feet rapidly. Absolutely a miracle that this doc was in attendance that day, AND that he cared enough to react so compassionately by taking personal action. He could have told spouse to go see our own doc (which in this situation could have been too late) and washed his hands of the situation. There are still good docs around that take their profession seriously. I am still in wonder with gratitude that God was with us that day. Posted by: Derak at November 30, 2024 12:47 PM (pcsm8) 186

@justinebateman has a statement up about privilege and about being grateful; excerpt:
RIP "Privilege" and the Death of Resentments This is a good day to tell you that the term “privileged” is over. For about ten years now, this term has been used as a weapon against others. That’s over now. This characterization of someone as “coming from a place of privilege” or the accusation of “a privileged way of thinking” is nothing more than expressions of resentment, and a distraction from the gifts the accuser has themselves. I don’t care who you are, there is some way that you are better off than someone else. I don’t care what your situation is, you are right now blessed with something. Maybe you have both legs, maybe you have your sight, maybe you have a place to live, maybe you simply woke up today, maybe you have a couple of days of sobriety, maybe you got to do something nice for someone, maybe you made the rent this month when you didn’t think you would, maybe you saw a pretty flower today, maybe a worst case scenario this year didn’t turn out so bad, and maybe little surprises happened this year that you absolutely did not expect. SNAP Households with at least one member who is 60 or older can have up to $3,000 in countable resources, such as cash or money in a bank account, and still be eligible for SNAP. SNAP benefits are based on household income, size, and allowable expenses. In Pennsylvania, the maximum gross monthly income for a household of one in 2024 is $2,510. Etc.
