  • The problem is clear: Our customers are dumb. (Intel)

Intel commissioned a study to find out how much more efficient users were when equipped with a fancy new "AI PC".

    It turned out:
At the same time, AI PCs offered a potentially transformative impact on people's lives, saving individuals roughly 240 minutes a week on routine digital tasks. But the study also highlighted that current AI PC owners spend longer on tasks than their counterparts using traditional PCs. Study results show that greater consumer education is needed to bridge the gap between the promise and reality of AI PCs.
AI PCs make things worse, but the real problem is the users.

  • Meanwhile at Microsoft. (Business Insider) (archive site)

Microsoft Copilot is a little too efficient, it seems... At sharing confidential information with people who shouldn't have it.

8 Willowed: I think the reason conceiving in space wouldn't work is not so much the conceiving, but that in low-g conditions the baby will grow much too fast. There was treatment of this in passing in Larry Niven's first novel, World of Ptavvs. The Belter culture, humans who lived and worked among the asteroid belt of Sol, dealt with zero-g for long periods. But they built an artificial asteroid that rotated for artificial gravity, "Confinement Asteroid," to which pregnant women needed to go early in their pregnancy so their fetuses would develop properly under gravity.

12 Meanwhile those respondents who already own an AI PC are actually spending longer on digital chores than those using a traditional PC. This suggests that consumers are spending a long time identifying how best to communicate with AI tools to get their desired outcomes.

Or maybe they're spending more time trying to figure out how to shut it off and work around it.

13 Temp is 54 F., feels like 52, w/ NNW wind at 9 mph. Good workout weather. Now I just have to kick myself into it.

Our last weekend before T'giving. Which means it's time for me to ask Miss Linda what she wants for her b'day, 12/1. Her first response will be, "I don't know." Then I'll say, "Yes you do, now what do you want?" Lately I've taken to saying, "What do you want for your birthday? Yes you do, now tell me," thus telescoping the exchange.

14 I looked up how to disable MS Copilot on my Win 11 PC at work, and did so. Didn't get any response when I searched on the PC for "Recall"; is that because MS hasn't instituted it yet on the current release?

15 Question: is anybody else having issues with their Win10 computer?

I got an 'error' a few days ago (and no, it didn't stay on the screen long enough to write it down...), and once it fully booted up...EVERYTHING had changed, my primary browser (Vivaldi) had been deleted...it was like I had totally different computer.

Well, I restored everything I needed, and went about my business. HOWEVER, twice now after starting up my laptop, I found myself at square one...browser deleted and NOW Edge is refusing to unpin from Task Bar.

This is getting f*cking old, fast...any tip, hints, or is anybody else getting their computer hijacked by MS?

16 I like my Win10 machine. I think when I bought it, it had Win8. So, 7-8 years old now? Something like that. If it's still chugging along next Oct, I'll just put some variety of Linux on it and keep going.

Back in the days of the big cattle drives to KC and thereabouts, there was a trailhead in the area where the Clear Fork and the West Fork of the Trinity River meet. The drive was subsequently replaced by rail and a huge industry of feed lots and associated businesses grew up there.

Link at Insty reports that the mother left the son with her father ( Perfectly legal in that area) who then let the son take the walk without her granting permission for the son to do so.

So...she was arrested for allowing the son to do something that she never actually granted him permission to do.

161 At a cost of around $12,000 installed, that translates into a cost of $36,000 per home. The U.S. has over 80 million single-family homes and over 130 million dwelling units. Hence, 240 million Powerwall units would be required just for single-family homes, costing almost $3 trillion. By comparison, Tesla’s current manufacturing capacity is 700,000 units per year. Thus, outfitting all single-family homes with them would require almost 350 years of Powerwall production.

"Leveraging the power of Intel® Core™ Ultra processor's NPU to assist virtual collaboration efforts helped find a new way to effectively and efficiently onboard new employees."

I remember that well. It was between 5:30 and 6:15PM, after sports and just out of the bath at boarding school in Nairobi and the news came over the radio. Dinner followed and lots of buzz.

it would be great to know the truth before I die. Same with 9/11. That shit about 'well some people are still alive' tells me people who shouldn't have been, are implicated and deserve all the shit that would befall on them.

I mentioned it here a year or so ago, but I bought a new gaming laptop with a high-powered 4080 video card. Immediately after setup I accidentally got to some "be greener" settings in setup, and one of the options was to temporarily disable telemetry (the system collecting data, spying, and sending all the information to their owners).

Projected battery life went from 1.5 hours to 6 hours.

It's insane to ponder how much processing power and internet speeds aren't tied to us using the things we paid for, but the things we paid for reporting on us.

178 I've seen more than a few auto repair videos where they did something the hard way.
-

Sometimes the harder way is useful to explain the underlying procedures and give a fuller explanation of what is actually happening.
-

I recently learned that there is the way to repair a car, and an insurance quote "these are the steps required to make the repair."

As you can imagine, the latter takes a LOT longer.

179 I hate that I can't pin things to the taskbar that I want there. I hate that the start menu shows nothing because they want me to search for it. I have a fucking brain. I can find my own shit.

The Start menu is definitely a problem in Win11.
But I can drag any App icon onto the left side of the taskbar and it will stay there. Do you mean you can’t drag files to the taskbar? Because I’ve never tried that.

I was on MacOS exclusively for years. So I managed to miss every Windows version from 7 to 10, only using Windows on other people’s/business’ machines.

So yeah, my last personal PC had WindowsXP.
Windows 11, therefore, is a big improvement for me.

And yet it still has all those weird bugs and annoyances that Windows has always had.

180 Morning. Sittin in the breakfast room of a La Quinta in Bowling Green KY, heading to FL via Nashville, Chattanooga, I-75, and realizing we'll sit for hours in Atlanta Friday evening rush hour traffic.

Hours of 3 mph crawl. Yuk.

Might just say fuck it, try getting to Marietta, stop for the night there, go through the city early Saturday.

182 I had no idea Pam Blondy was Jeb Bush's Attorney General in Florida. Anyone associated with the stink of the Bushes should have been avoided like the plague.

And I found this: Bush "is the type of leader our country is looking for in our next President. I look forward to traveling around Florida and across our country to talk directly to voters about Jeb Bush's vision for the future," Bondi said in a statement released Friday by the Bush team. 184 At the same time, AI PCs offered a potentially transformative impact on people's lives, saving individuals roughly 240 minutes a week on routine digital tasks.

Very reminiscent of when Adobe rolled out its OCR capability to turn .PDF files into editable documents. That, too, was going to be a big time-saver. Except that having OCR'd the document, you had to very closely proof it to make sure the resulting text was correct. Not a time-saver at all, it turned out, and hugely annoying to boot.

185 Windows 10 was released in 2015. It's ten years old. Recall is a serious problem, sure, but Windows 11 is just Windows 10 with a different shell. If you don't like the shell, install a better one. We did it with Windows 8.
