Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I am truly grateful to have all of you as readers. Particularly those of you who are approaching 29 years old and have been here a long while. But also the new morons.

I am very grateful to those who donate to me. It really helps. The blog makes little money in ads. I'm mostly supported by your generous donations.

And of course the great and untiring coblogs, who run this site more hours of the week than I do.

Thank you all so much. I don't know how I'd manage without you.

Seriously though, there's an existential threat, when internet people are saying "old media is dead," and these people are criticized for being such a monolithic voice, to the point where it doesn't really matter whether you work for the NY Times or CNN or Faux Nooz or BBC or AP or on and on and on, you have to fit your words into the narrative that has already been created for you. Nothing outside the lines is allowed.

And here they are, in unison, quitting twatter.

108 Seriously though, there's an existential threat, when internet people are saying "old media is dead," and these people are criticized for being such a monolithic voice, to the point where it doesn't really matter whether you work for the NY Times or CNN or Faux Nooz or BBC or AP or on and on and on, you have to fit your words into the narrative that has already been created for you. 153 Whoever said Thanksgiving is the greatest American holiday is right. I see it kind of like Christmas vs Easter. One is a birthday, the other is in honor of what its all about.

Thanksgiving is about a small band of people who got fed up with being told what to think and broke off to a new land to be free, despite all-too-harsh hardships. They were city people suddenly trying to be survivalists - they didn't know what the hell they were doing, and half of them died. But it was all for freedom.

When they found themselves starving to death they resorted to things the autocracy back in their homeland would never consider. (1) CAPITALISM, in other words, economic freedom. They had tried an essentially communist system, and that's why they were starving. (2) They consulted experts - in other words, the people who had learned how to live in that harsh environment centuries ago. The "savages" no self-respecting Englishman would ever listen to.

Unfortunately, they got the wrong message, and credited God with saving them, instead of their own wise decisions. Well, that's pretty American too, is it not?

Maybe this year we can take a step towards re-learning what really made America great.

172 Breaking News: Orcas start wearing dead salmon hats again after ditching the trend for 37 years

Orcas off the coast of Washington State are balancing dead fish on their heads like it's the 1980s, but researchers still aren't sure why they do it.

Northwest Pacific orcas have started wearing salmon hats again, bringing back a bizarre trend first described in the 1980s, researchers say.

Last month, scientists and whale watchers spotted orcas (Orcinus orca) in South Puget Sound and off Point No Point in Washington State swimming with dead fish on their heads.

This is the first time they've donned the bizarre headgear since the summer of 1987, when a trendsetting female West Coast orca kickstarted the behavior for no apparent reason. Within a couple of weeks, the rest of the pod had jumped on the bandwagon and turned salmon corpses into must-have fashion accessories, according to the marine conservation charity ORCA — but it's unclear whether the same will happen this time around.

No word on whether bell-bottomed trousers are making a comeback, though.

183 This may be my best turkey ever. I put a spicy rub under and on top of the skin and the piece I just sampled is tender and delicious.

Tried to spatchcock this monster but I don't have the right knife. Oh well.

Almost time to take the bird out and put in the sausage and cornbread dressing and the other sides.

I think the term for it is Imposter Syndrome, people who realize, deep down, they haven't earned what they have, and the concept of the "journalist," which meant something else not that long ago, now means some douchebag who monitors twatter, and reacts to it.

Although I believe they use the term to describe people who only THINK they are frauds. These people actually are.

I am grateful for my Honda Trail 125, 50 cent Taco Tuesday tacos, smoking cigars and drinking scotch with my 29 year old friends, that I was able to buy a home after moving to New Mexico after ending up in a car 15 years ago, celebrating Trash Day Eve each week, that the boy spawn graduated from college thus getting him off my books, that I have medical insurance again, the very kind gentleman that sold me half cord of pecan firewood for $60, my millennial 2nd cousin is living proof that her generation are not complete idiots, to CBD for posting the painting by the French anarchist who had a thing for lesbians, and all the Morons here that have kept me endlessly entertained. The waning year is the natural time to reflect on and measure our blessings be you alone or surrounded by many on this day. Live in such moments as they are fleeting and enduring simultaneously. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

224 It is easy to forget to be grateful for our lives, partcularly when we seem to be beset with difficulties or sorrows.

Around here, almost the first topic that is raised is the consequence of the storm/flood. When asked, the almost universal reply is something like, 'We were truly lucky, we only suffered the loss of a few trees and the front porch'. My standard reply is, 'Well, I still have all ten fingers and all ten toes, so I have nothing to complain about'.

A while back, Moron thathalfafrican suggested a book by Prager, 'Happiness Is A Serious Problem'. Whatever one thinks of Prager, it is a thoughtful book. There is one chapter that addresses the significance that gratitude plays in our lives. Worth the read.

227 Werner comes here to wish all a happy Thanksgiving and an early Merry Christmas. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Deutschland as it is here, in part because each day reminds us of the Cosmic Void drawing closer to us with every nano-second, and partly because it interferes with our longstanding national pastime of despair and alienation. Ach, that went dark. Sorry about that.

Someone showed Werner a clip from a Seventies sitcom from the United States associated with this day, and it struck a chord with me. My documentary "Encounters at the End of the World," which depicts the unique terrain of Antarctica, as well as those who live and work there had just been released. Documentaries need promotion as much as any cinematic product, and I was at a loss for what to do.

Klaus Kinski assured me that he had it covered. A blimp arrived over Yankee Stadium in the Big Apple. As Werner and an expectant throng watched, a flood of dark objects flooded from the gondola. These were living creatures, rendered by gravity into a disgusting death. Later, as I was pimp slapping Klaus, he swore "As Gott ist mein witness, I thought penguins could fly!

Auf Wiedersehen, alles!

I had a great day - went to my sister's, enjoyed a really well-cooked (my husband cooked it and brought it with us). She and my brother provided the rest.
Except for the cranberry sauce - homemade by moi. MANY compliments were received - here's the recipe.
1-1/2 cups sugar
bag of cranberries
3/4 cup of water
I added about 1/2 cup or so of orange juice, and brought it to a boil. Lowered the heat for 15 minutes more.
Fabulous, and EASY.
