Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - November 27, 2024 [TRex]

20241122-Prayers.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. We are thankful for many things. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of an ONT (which is a synonym for happiness, right?).

Always tastes great AND less filling: this is the Wednesday night ONT. May your cup runneth over...

Socialism Failed Miserably For The American Pilgrims, Just Like It Does Everywhere

[S]ome [settlers] doe it not willingly and others not honestly.

So they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery. At length, after much debate of things, the Governor (with the advice of the chiefest amongst them) gave way that they should set corn every man for his own particular, and in that regard trust to themselves; in all other things to go on in the general way as before. And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number, for that end, only for present use (but made no division for inheritance) and ranged all boys and youth under some family.

[I]t made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could use, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.

20241125-beavers enjoying thanksgiving dinner.jpg

The Pilgrim Quest for Beaver (alternate title: Bibles and Beavers Brought American Bounty).

The Bible and the beaver were the two mainstays of the Plymouth Colony in its early years.

The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to trap beaver in exchange for metal objects, grain and finished clothing.

The establishment of the colony was an economic investment. Merchant backers put up money, but the colony was not prosperous in the early days. The Pilgrims bought out their backers for partial assumption of outstanding debt.

The price for beaver pelts was relatively low during the early 1620s but increased in 1627 and 1628 because England was at war with France and Spain. Beaver fur became more scarce in Europe, and so the price went up and Pilgrims got the benefit. Most of their pelts came from Maine.

The success of the Pilgrims led to the larger emigration and founding of what became Boston.

America was built on beaver and the beaver became the national animal of...Canada. The end.

Twas the night before Thanksgiving

We play because our childhood friendships mean more to us than we can truly describe. We play so we have that special night to look forward to, where we can all be together to turn back the clock and be kids again. We play to keep up a special holiday tradition and to make certain we all find time to be with each other. We play because we realize how fortunate we are to have such close, long-lasting relationships -- and to make even more special memories.

NBC honors John Madden on Thanksgiving by taking the original Madden Cruiser on one last trip

On Thursday, NBC will continue to honor Maddens legacy when it opens its broadcast before the nightcap between the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers.

The two minute open features the original Madden Cruiser traveling from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, to Lambeau Field last week. It has remained in Green Bay and will also be featured during the game.

The idea of bringing the bus out of retirement first came up during NBCs Sunday Night Football production meetings in early June. Madden donated the Madden Cruiser to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Hall was all in on the idea of the cruiser taking one final ride around the Midwest. It is a featured attraction during enshrinement week activities, but most of the year, it is stored in a warehouse in northeast Ohio.

Turkeys being pardoned at the White House always stay at the Willard Hotel the night before the ceremony. There are two turkeys but seems like practice varies between including one or both in the ceremony.

This year, the turkeys were selected out of a flock of 44. The winners rode in the back of a minivan for 16 hours to DC. Selection depends in temperament (ability to behave at a ceremony with lots of commotion and people) and plumage nicest feathers). The names (Peach and Blossom) came from a suggestion box at the Minnesota State Fair that were winnowed and submitted to the President to decide. The pardoned turkeys will go to an agricultural interpretative center in Waseca, Minnesota called Farmamerica. The unpardoned turkeys will not. The crime for which clemency was granted was not disclosed.

20241122-WHTurkey.jpg

Since the ONT is concerned with facts of the most important historical significance, here are the names of the pardoned turkeys of the past ten years:
2024: Peach and Blossom (from Minnesota)
2023: Liberty and Bell (from Minnesota)
2022: Chocolate and Chip (from North Carolina)
2021: Peanut Butter and Jelly (from Indiana)
2020: Corn and Cob (from Iowa)
2019: Bread and Butter (from North Carolina)
2018: Peas and Carrots (from South Dakota)
2017: Drumstick and Wishbone (from Minnesota)
2016: Tater and Tot (from Iowa)
2015: Abe and Honest (from California)

Random Vatican news:
Vatican to install a webcam at St. Peters tomb as part technological outreach for Holy Year

Pope Francis will inaugurate a webcam on Dec. 2 to be installed beneath the main altar of St. Peters Basilica.

Another webcam will be placed on the basilicas Holy Door for the 2025 Jubilee, during which indulgences for the forgiveness of sins are granted to pilgrims who travel to Rome and enter through it.

Jim Abrahams, Writer and Director of Airplane!, Naked Gun and Other Zucker Brothers Comedies, Dies at 80

The ONT offers the following in recognition and memory of Mr. Abrahams:

30th anniversary Airplane! reunion in 2013:20241117-8921695915247.jpg

Related trivia:

David Letterman read for the part of Ted Striker

Kareem Abdul Jabbars role as Roger Murdock was originally written for Pete Rose.

The film producers received permission from The Bee Gees to speed up Stayin Alive in the bar scene by 10%.

For the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same people who made the real announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. They were also married to each other in real life.

The three directors had a long battle with the Directors Guild of America, who initially refused to allow for a three director credit. Jim Abrahams legally changed his name to [Abrahams and Zuckers] in order to ensure credit was given to all three directors in the credits. The Guild ultimately allowed the three director credit.

Otto, the automatic pilot, ultimately disintegrated after spending several years in Jerry Zuckers garage.

The movie cost $3.5 million and only took 34 days to make.

Airplane! was based on the 1957 movie Zero Hour. It mostly follows the same storyline but adds gags and jokes:

20241127-Zerohourposter.jpg

And for a big ONT finish:

August 12 through September 24, 1991 (in this order):

Try to think of it this way
1) We injure ourselves (sin)

2) We have an operation to remove the injury so we don't die from it (confession and absolution)

3) We still have to undergo rehabilitation to heal ourselves completely (temporal punishment)

All the indulgence does is help with the third step. They used to be purchased, but now they are obtained with prayer.

I think there was an effort to "sanitize" the original renaming from the Beavers to the Bombers. In the late '80s some people more to the west, probably, got uncomfortable with the original mushroom cloud mascot. So an old story about a B-17 that Hanford area workers helped finance after news about D-Day inspired a "pass-the -hat" campaign to donate money to finance one Boeing built bomber was grafted into the school's history. B-17 "Days Pay" is that "imposter. "

345 318, agreed., For some reason, all the retail stores play the pop music from 1987 when I graduated high school. We didn’t think there was anything particularly special about it, but they’re still playing it well over 30 years later. They either think the music is good or they know who is shopping at their stores

I know my music tastes keep going back and with country and rock. I’m firmly in plate the 1970s. Sure there was a lot great in the 80s like George Strait but as the years go by my tastes go back before my time.

NEW: Mormon soft-swinging lesbians start feuding on social media after regretting their actions that led to the destruction of their marriages with their husbands.

These clowns won't drink coffee but will do this. Wild world we live in.

One Mormon soft swinger has come forward and said she is "ashamed" of her actions with another Mormon couple that led to their divorce.

The video stems from a May 2022 scandal where the TikTok group came forward and revealed that they were all having "soft swinging" parties with each other.

The scandal blew up and led to several divorces.

The moms say people shouldn't criticize them because "a lot of things happen in the church and a lot of sins are committed every single day."

Texas Children's Hospital is associated with the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest in the world. Texas Medical Center is the locus point of children's mutilation. It is where the whistle blower called them out for breaking the new law forbidding these mutilations. It also has another associated lawsuit against it.

The Nexus of this is The Texas Medical Center. Dr. Hotez is the leading aspirant promoting the Covid Shot and under his tutelage the Methodist Hospital was the first hospital in the US to force Nurses and other employees to take the Covid shot. Also the lawsuit continues between the Methodist and Mary Tally Bowden on them revoking her privileges at the hospital.

There is a big nasty connection between US Govt bureaucrats, Insurance companies, the medical system and The Texas Medical Center specifically.

Yes, I agree. Criminals don't expect consequences anymore because there hasn't been consequences. It will be a necessary shock if behavior is going to change.

I think it was in the book, One Second After, that capital punishment was put in place for looting and the first to loot was just a kid but the consequence had to be delivered or the community would fall apart.

Children should learn actions have consequences while they *are* children but that hasn't happened for a few generations.

Northwest Pacific orcas have started wearing salmon hats again, bringing back a bizarre trend first described in the 1980s, researchers say. 416 405, that used to be a thing. I am not saying it is not a thing anymore because this is a big country but back in the day people that lived in military towns, particularly small military towns would regularly invite service people to Sunday dinner. Almost always the single guys. My grandfather used to do that.

I’m just spitballing here. I have never been to a Mo meet or MOME, But it would seem to me it would be cool to do one on a Thanksgiving. Kind of a get-together with two meanings. I’m just throwing that out there as an idea.

424 The late defrost is the worst play, but you do what you have to do. There’s a reason frozen turkeys are basically worthless on Thanksgiving day or even the day before at the store.

So many ways to go with turkey, but the best is probably brining, but then you have to do the stuffing outside of the turkey. But you can put that thing in the brain for a couple days easy. I love that turkey is a common national culinary challenge and still it is so difficult to do right. There are actually people that think a dry turkey. It’s the norm and that’s why you have all the different sauces, etc.. In the end, it’s about tradition not really about how well prepared the food is. In many ways, that is a real cool thing about us. For sure, Thanksgiving is not a competition for most.

Ugh. Ice pick & cool, running water?

No. Use BOILING water, right outta the tea kettle.

Upend that bird in the sink, either neck or ass-up. Won't matter, either way.

Keep pouring in the boiling water. Every time the kettle is ready again, flip the bird and pour off the now tepid water.

Keep pouring the boiling water to it. In under an hour, you'll have defeated the ice block, and cleared the innards of the carcass.

NOW return to your ordinary, slower thawing process, if you still have time.

The MEAT will still be +90% frozen at this point, but at least the body cavity will be clear to let further thawing proceed.

436 I usually do the stand-it-up and run water thing Thanksgiving morning anyway, because I've had many a "fresh" turkey that was partially frozen, but this thing was beyond any frozen I've had.
Last year, frozen, asked the butcher how many days, he told me, it happened.
This durn thing (now I know why it says "Do not open package until turkey is fully defrosted". I bet it's pretty impressive, and should probably include "open in sink") even says on the package that this poundage will thaw in fridge in 3-4 days for a 12-16 pounder.
No.
Hence my "I now hate pre-brined" fussing.
Our local market has one of those discount/earn points cards, and you can save your points for a Thanksgiving turkey, an Easter ham, etc, and the selections have been good so far (even including kosher turkeys).
this year has been so tough on so many, they ran out of the free/points selections a couple weeks ago, so this was an "all natural! no hormones or antibiotics! pre-brined!" substitution they provided.
Next year if that is the selection again, I won't have to worry about the freezer being too small for a bird; I'll just throw that sucker in the fridge two weeks before I want it!

438 The cool thing about turkey is three parts cook at different times. The breast get done way before the thighs and the stuffing. It will always be a conundrum, and there are many options to go with with their positives and negatives. There is brining, Cooking the bird upside down half the time, Flat out, cutting off the breasts 30 minutes before you take out the rest of the bird. To be honest, most of them work particularly the last option, though you don’t get a beautiful bird that is browned. Most people are with family and if the sides are good and the turkeys OK, there are no concerns. But as a challenge, it is always interesting. People talk about deep fried birds, even today. My guess is in someways that is a fad And not the ultimate answer, but I would like to try one.

And to you, sir.

Point of order. Few years back, I bought some 168gr Match King .308 loads you had cooked up.

They produced CLOVERLEAF groups, from a 1960s, Winchester 88 lever action with pencil barrel, WORLD'S WORST 15 lb trigger, and old, mottled, Weaver K-4 fine wire scope!!!

Write to me with a quote for 60 rounds of such, if you still have the data?

Almost ALL my guns will be up for sale, and that one, I want to sell with a sample target, and enough rounds to make a "convert".

If "Game King" projectiles can be predicted to do the same, even better.

Reminds me of the Crossman 760 pump air rifle I had as a kid. 25 pumps max, but a Godzilla trigger at that.

And THAT damn air gun is what gave me competition grade trigger control. Go figure.

447 442, me too. There are many. I know to some it would be disaster to be alone on Thanksgiving, but I’ve experienced a different part of the world over the last many years and for many is the most normal thing ever.

I say to each there is a season, Everyone is going through their own thing at their own time. What is unusual to one person becomes normal to another, Because that is reality. I had so many great Thanksgiving before and expect many great ones in the future. Tomorrow, I will have my fun, watch football and eat well. I will also be out there hustling to make a few bucks from others tired of Thanksgiving dinner.

You for sure, not alone in that many of the hoard will be alone on Thanksgiving. But we should all be thankful that Trump won and things are looking up. Where will I be next year? Where will any of us be? I personally am looking forward to tomorrow and I hope to make the best of it. Best wishes to you all the hoard who are alone and all the horde that are with family and friends.

450 I was joking, JQ--the whole "don't open till thawed" and the way it's behaving make me wonder if it would TAKE two weeks to thaw.

Anyway, victory! neck is out, and in crockpot. Cavity cleared of iceberg with steak knife that ultimately freed neck, and tomorrow it shall sit in the sink with water running through it to get the last.

451 Stuffing/dressing on the side, FTW! It gets that lovely, crunchy crust on top, which doesn't happen inside the bird.

453 I haven't put the stuffing inside in a few years, so no worries.

Posted by: barbarausa at November 28, 2024 01:35 AM (enw9G)

454 451, no doubt I love in the bird. It’s the best way to do it. And it is the difference between stuffing and dressing. But also, you are correct. Technically, the best way to do it is to brine the bird and make the stuffing outside. Add a lot of turkey broth for sure.

Like I said above, That is what makes turkey so infuriating but also awesome, There are so many ways to do it, but the funny thing is their very few ways to do it right. I still say the idea of cutting the breasts off 30 minutes before the rest of the bird is done is the best way to have non-dry breasts. That isn’t the end, but it is a good way. I personally prefer the dark meat.

Now I am the old one at the table telling stories to the young'ens.

My kids were all baking today, singing their favorite Christmas songs together. Will be different next year as the youngest boy's voice is headed much lower!
