Comcast Announces It's Dumping MSNBC and Other Dying Cable Channels

Comcast is making a major play to displace Groomer Corporation Disney as America's top tourist destination with its Epic Universe theme park in Orlando.

What they don't need is Disney's disgusting baggage in the form of toxic extremist politics.

I'm just guessing about the relationship between these stories. No one is saying this.

Whether my guess is true or not, Comcast is attempting to ditch MSNBC, and sooner rather than later.

John Nolte says the move is just for purposes of separating Comcast's viable properties from its dying ones, so that its stock price isn't weighed down by dying cable channels.

Maybe.

With the inevitable death of cable TV accelerating, communications giant Comcast has decided to cut its losses and separate from MSNBC and other cable networks.

"Comcast Corporation today announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company comprised of a strong portfolio of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel," read a company statement.

Also spinning off into the new company are the "complementary digital assets including Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow and Sports Engine[.]"

For now, Comcast is calling this new company "SpinCo."

Here's what Comcast will hold onto...

"The planned spin-off will also strategically position NBCUniversal with its leading broadcast and streaming media properties, including NBC entertainment, sports, news and Bravo -- which all power Peacock -- along with Telemundo, the theme parks business and film and television studios."

NBCUniversal is, of course, the NBC broadcast network and the film and TV studio, Universal Studios. Bravo, which originally launched in 1980 as an upscale performing arts network, is now a powerhouse of reality TV. It delivers programming that's cheap to produce (Real Housewives franchise, Top Chef, Project Runway, etc.), that attracts millions of viewers, and makes insane profits. Bravo is vital to Comcast's streaming platform, Peacock (which will also remain with the mother ship), not only because its programming is popular but Peacock subscribers love to dig in and binge those shows.

...

So why is Comcast dumping the rest? Three reasons... 1) stock price, 2) stock price, 3) stock price.

Cable TV is dying. It is a slow death, one I've been documenting for a decade, and we have now reached the beginning of the end.

I saw a claim, either on X or in the comments, that NBC was attempting to distance itself from MSNBC, even though NBC "News" is just as bad as MSNBC and features many of the same "journalists," and supposedly was cutting off ties with MSNBC. But I can't see that being reported anywhere.

The Flagrantly Adulterous Duo of Joe and Mika joked -- or "joked" -- "We can be fired tomorrow," discussing the move.

From your lips to God's ears, Hitler-Lovers.

70 Morning Joe suffers ratings nosedive after hosts met Trump at Mar-a-Lago. 56 minutes after the hosts began explaining their trip to the Trump residence, viewing figures began to tumble. Between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., they had fallen 17 percent from 839,000 to 694,000.

I believe those two don't care about their own ratings. They bent the knee, and now they’re happy to have avoided hanging on the wall.

They both have plenty of money. They are trying to stay out of the Rapist's Gulag. I'll give them another 2 months - at the most - before they are cancelled. It is their audience they need to cater to.

I had MSNBC on my TV 24/7 during the week before the election, but sparsely after Nov 5. After Monday's MJ confession, MSNBC hasn't been on once. Not even for Jen & Rachel on Monday. It's part protest, but it's also part "i need to get my head out of this political space that's occupied it for months"

Their ratings sucked even before this. How can a network survive on only 800,000 eyeballs? Anything under 4 million should be canceled immediately. Can we at least have over 1 percent of the population watch a show?

Yes, spinco is a generic name given to an entity that will take on the unwanted assets and then transfer them to a new entity after the spinoff. It is just funny that they used spinco as a name for channels that literally do nothing but spin.

94 Cable TV is dying. It is a slow death, one I've been documenting for a decade, and we have now reached the beginning of the end.

It's a self inflicted death.
Simply because they never allowed ala carte channels. You had to take all thousand channels for an exorbitant price instead of simply paying for the four or five channels you watched.

I watched Animal Planet, Discovery, the Hitler Channel and maybe one or two others BUT I had to pay the $100+ price tag dragging along the Watching Paint Dry (golf) and Tennis Channels.

SMOD, I could save the researchers and activists the David Hogg consulting fee and just point them to ShoeonHead's vid about why the dems lost males. But I'm ok if they never figure this out, and the redpilled males still vote red in the midterms and 2028.

Her roasting of those masculine men for Kamala ads with the soyboy actors, instead of finding real men, was pretty great.

But I've thought about giving it a try under a pseudonym. This stuff is catnip crack to middle age women, and ever since the pandemic the push for cozy anything--cozy romance, cozy mystery, cozy fantasy--has not died down. It is a tempting side hustle. But you have to produce like a machine or the indie book audience gets bored.

305 The utter failure of cable TV is an issue that needs to be addressed by Congress. American taxpayers no doubt spent billions of dollars to wire the entire country with cable in the last 50 years, so we have skin in the game. Unfortunately, the business model of the mega corporations who control cable is to subsidize channels nobody watches with the subscriber fees of people who don’t watch. Now that that no longer works, they are simply going belly up. How about stepping in and preventing them from doing that so we get some return on our investment for once? À la carte pricing for all.

313 The parodies of these on FB Reels and TikTok are hysterical. Not to disparage the indie authors that write this stuff, they do 4-5 books a year and are workhorses.

I have read a lot of them since my mother and sister had a bunch and I couldn't carry 10 books to Xmas vacation I needed something to read. The good ones are pretty entertaining since you could do anything with it under the main plot - Gal meets boy, misunderstanding 1 happens and she hates him, event 2 happens and she realizes she loves him and he hates her now then crisis 3 happens and everything is fixed up and its happy time. If its light adult throw in some sex scenes in there. But the framing around that can be anything - I remember one where the dude is a time traveller.

387 I've posted this before but the US and New Zealand are the only two countries that allow pharm ads on TV. It is appalling as the risks of many of the drugs they are selling have very harmful if not deadly side effects for some people. They also send out a very bad message to kids and young people that just a pill a day can take all of your troubles away.
Posted by: Cheri

They also employ out of work auctioneers to read off the side effects very rapidly.
Posted by: Thomas Paine

I think it should be like gross sidebar ads. If your drug can cause gangrene, projectile vomiting, liver cancer, and diarrhea, you should have to include a two or three second still pic or video of each side effect in your drug commercial.

If nothing else, the stiffy pill ads will go away, since a picture of "priapism" won't get past the censors.

401 Fen, I have some ideas for cozy romances! I really love the old films like It Happened One Night and Shop Around the Corner. Want to do some cozy romance stories that pull from what made the classic romances great, vs the Hollywood fluff they call romcoms nowadays. Woke kind of killed the romcom off. Only a few have really emerged from this era that I like.

(Yes I know you've got mail was an update of the shop around the corner. But that kind of idea of vivid, interesting characters, sharp men and women with fun dialogue sorting out their feelings while wackiness ensues. With some deeper themed b plots going on that ground the fluff.)

Under a strict interpretation of the old Mann Act, yes. But, they have revised it to make it easier. Scotus case in the 20's involved a married man buying a ticket for him and his fancy lady to go from California to Nevada for a bit of illicit fun. The old Mann act required merely that you cross state lines with an immoral purpose in mind. Scotus agreed that a married man paying for going across state lines for his mistress for a quickie affair was included under the scope of the act. Conviction affirmed.

Chuck Barry among others ran afoul of that act and it was a terror among the DC yutes of a certain age about getting into trouble over it.

470 NetFlix has a sudden deluge of romantic comedies with Christmas themes.

You'll be shocked to learn in all of them the attractive (but not too attractive) young-ish (but not too young) leading lady meets a disproportionately attractive man who nearly instantly throws himself at her. It was probably more because the Greek adult men were idealizing pre-pubescent male bodies, since that’s what they were having sex with.

According to the most reliable historians, the pederasty and homosexuality supposedly engaged in by the Greeks has been IMMENSELY overstated.

489 Fen, I have some ideas for cozy romances!

Posted by: LizLem, Lord of the Rings and the Reckonings at November 20, 2024 02:27 PM (wcIbG)

I read a lot of early SF, Stanley Weinbaum from the 30s and a lot of his stuff is framed as a romance arc, guy meets girl on jungle planet Venus, misunderstandings happen and they figure it out and get married in the end. There are even sequels where the married couple explore more planets.

I don't think modern romance does that, having the couple start out married much anymore.

527 Fen, I have some ideas for cozy romances!

Liz, I'm one of the few straight guys you'll ever meet who likes both Shop and You've Got Mail. Funny dialogue, charming likeable characters -- and in both, the guy is NOT painted as a doofus, and in fact resolves their situation himself. I don't think you see that much any more.

I did something that pissed her off, she pissed at me about it and stormed off.

I stayed my usual, then went home. We talked and I told her that that's my 'place' and my environment. If you don't like it, fine, but we're going to have a problem. I don't do anything wrong, I don't cheat and I come home to you. If that's going to bug you, then this isn't going to work.

556 Oldcat, you're thinking of Affair to Remember!! Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr!! Yes, she's running to meet him at the Empire State Building and gets hit by the car. The grandma subplot in that always gets me.

(People want to say Cary Grant was gay, but he filmed Affair right after his love affair with Sophia Loren imploded and she wouldn't marry him. He was bitter and lovesick, and he poured those feelings into the film. I think it's his best acting ever. Deborah was having her marriage implode at the same time. They bonded as friends during the film since they were both were having romance troubles, I think it's why they have such great chemistry.)

It happened one night has Clark Gable and the dialog is fantastic. The walls of Jericho!

I'll have to check out those old sci-fi books with the romance subplots! I'm interested in that, especially ones with married couples. I think it's an interesting challenge.
