Carefully heat the can. A candle with do a good job. You can also low heat melt in a cradling pan. Despite many recommendations, do not directly ignite the saddle soap or like polishes. Yep everyone knows someone that does this with success and at least four to one you will have a story of "napalm" like incidents. Just one last caution, be aware of the heat of the can while handling or removing from heat as to avoid a napalm incident.

Shave soap. I use this instead of cream, or whatever. It smells good, doesn't lather too much and provides a slick surface when I shave with my single blade razor.

Condition the leather's deep grain with mink oil before applying the saddle soap. Saddle soap is to keep the stitching from rotting. Side note, none of these excellent natural preservatives will prevent formation of mildew as temperature goes up and down in storage area. Do not ask how I know this.
You put saddle soap on with a hot moist cloth. The heat re-forms the soap to fit the tin. The soap should be worked up to a mild frothing foam to be rubbed into the leather. Then you buff. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at November 24, 2024 02:15 PM (zdLoL) 31

Here's a first world problem...
I have a Samsung gas stove. It has a control board with buttons so you can punch in the temperature you want the oven set to. The row that has the numbers 1, 4, and 7 died. I could care less about 1 and 7 but this means I can't set the temp to 400ish. Now amusingly it has a "pizza" setting that sets it to exactly 400. I can do that, but I contacted my local guy to fix it and he told me they don't make that part any more - I have no idea how old the stove is, it was in the house when I bought it. So am i just stuck never cooking at 425 or 450? Posted by: 18-1 at November 24, 2024 02:31 PM (oZhjI) 60
A double boiler limits the heat to 212F (or, at my location about 201F). Can't control temperature very well with heat gun/hair dryer. Volatiles boil off at too high a temperature, which makes it worse.

My FWP this week is my own damn fault. Being 29, I take a number of prescriptions and OTC vitamins and supplements twice daily. I got on of those weekly pill organizers to keep track. On Saturdays, I place the Saturday evening pills in another bottle so I can refill my dispenser for the next. All that's well and good but my 29 year old dog also takes twice daily pills. So I often use one of her empty pill bottles to hold my Saturday evening pills. Last night, I grabbed what I thought was my Saturday night pills and downed them. Then I found my actual pills and realized I had downed my dog's pill bottle overdosing on Gabapentin. I didn't panic because my dog weighs 15 lbs. and I weigh, uhhh, somewhat more. I looked up Gabapentin and it wasn't too scary considering I had only taken maybe twice an adult dose so I decided to just ride it out. I got higher than I've been for decades, stumbled to bed, and slept like a dog. I didn't wake to a host of Heavenly angels so I seem to have survived although I'm still a little more relaxed than usual.

On the one hand I hate the interference of government and graft and corruption that goes hand in hand with regulation. On the other hand, I hate that major appliance manufacturers are selling us very expensive, shoddily made shit products that break early and often, have inadequate or nonexistent support, and/or have arrangements that prohibit unrelated third-parties from fixing them. They're fucking the consumers to a point that's almost fraudulent, but I worry the cure may be worse than the disease.

10-key style keypads are a grid: 123 456 789 There's 3 vertical lines (1/4/7, 2/5/8, and 3/6/9) and 3 horizontal ones. You have a bad connection on the leftmost vertical line. Probably a cracked solder joint because RoHS lead-free solder is the devil. If you have a multimeter and a soldering iron you should be able to find where that line goes to (probably a pin on a microcontroller) and touch up the connection there. Or, as someone else suggested, you can find a part number off the board and check eBay. Posted by: Ian S. at November 24, 2024 02:53 PM (0A/JS) 107

also who uses saddle soap
I used saddle soap on our tack when we had hay burners and rode them regularly. I learned a great deal about leather care from an older gentleman who still teaches leather working for kids in my wife's home school program. He also worked with my son's BS troop. Saddle soap is primarily a cleaner. It will condition to a certain degree, but if the leather needs to be restored, I use SS first to clean and follow up with Neats foot oil to condition. Never used it on dress shoes. Kiwi worked just fine for those. Posted by: Sock Monkey * Justice for Peanut at November 24, 2024 02:56 PM (F3SmE) 111

Linked in nic: pic of a carriage bolt that came from Mom's piano, a 70-some-year-old Knabe baby grand.
When the piano movers set it up about a year ago, they told us there was a bolt missing. Months later, we found a bolt on the floor under the piano. Wiggled out from wherever it was hiding. In the photo, the bolt on the left is the original carriage bolt, which you may see is bent to unusability. SonM shopped at Tractor Supply and Lowe's for possible matches. Thread was matched, but length - not quite but close enough. No match on the slotted head. Settled on the bolt on the right, which you cannot see has a recessed hex head, as the most suitable, but necessarily using a smaller washer. SonM, of course, had the right tool for the job. After years in storage and a year without that bolt, the piano is all together again. Now it just needs tuning… Posted by: mindful webworker - first world traveler at November 24, 2024 03:21 PM (vUvG1) 158

After years in storage and a year without that bolt, the piano is all together again.
Now it just needs tuning… Posted by: mindful webworker - first world traveler at November 24, 2024 03:21 PM (vUvG1) A quibble: the original bolt is almost assuredly not a carriage bolt, since it has a slotted head, which implies it is meant to be turned by a screwdriver. Second one is a carriage bolt, since it has no slot, and it has a squared shank immediately beneath the head, which is intended to wedge tightly in the drilled hole in a piece of wood, locking the bolt from turning as the nut is tightened. I would characterize the piano bolt as a truss-head slotted machine screw, and it is probably obsolete. Myself, if appearance were an issue, I would go with a black iron carriage bolt of suitable size, grind the square shank round and smooth, and slot the head. If it is out sight, the hex socket-head bolt is is perfectly fine, too. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 24, 2024 03:30 PM (0IhkV) 176

At my new development it’s a golf cart friendly community . I wouldn’t consider one except they also have a private golf course where you would have to rent as not included in membership.
So I went on line to see what a refurbished used cart would cost. Shocked. I always invert paint cans with the friction-fit lids for a few seconds after reclosing them, to get a film of paint to seal any leaks in the lid. POR-15 is notorious for going hard in the can. What I did for it was use the CO2 cylinder on my welder to fill the headspace on the can with CO2, and then close the lid.
