Trump was already a pop culture legend back then. 30-some years later, NFL players who weren’t even born at that time are proudly imitating his goofy dance during games. The guy is an enigma!
Random Historical Trivia Nugget of the Night How many of you can name all 50 State Capitals? I get mixed up on a few, but for the most part, I can. But over the years, some states have relocated their capital to a different city for various reasons. Do you know that last time this occurred? If you said Oklahoma in 1910, give yourself a high-five! Admitted to the United States in 1907, Oklahoma’s first capital was Guthrie. Then in 1910, voters approved a ballot measure to move the capital 30-ish miles south to Oklahoma City. 25 states have relocated their capital at least once – here’s a lighthearted judgment of each of those states. So... I go out to the garage today to look for some wire my wife used for tying Christmas ornaments onto various things... like a wreath.
Instead I get into a box of various fasteners, and spend the next hour organizing them into various styles, sizes and colors. No clue what I originally was out there for at the time. But I did have a beer. Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 19, 2024 10:27 PM (Q4IgG) 119

Then in 1910, voters approved a ballot measure to move the capital 30-ish miles south to Oklahoma City. I seem to recall they had to smuggle the capital goods out in the middle of the night. 2. Don't know about yours, but in my yout', that MF word would get you whupped & possibly mouth washed out with soap, but most likely wasn't said. Especially to Ma. 3. Several decades back, family Thanksgiving at my younger sister's house, we sat around the table one evening naming all the state capitols. My young nephew looked at us all like we were from another planet: why would anyone care about such trivia? He grew up. That tweet of 70s fun took me back.
My boyhood was the 50s. No Atari, more time for weapons. We had Ben Pearson fiberglass bows, made our own arrows, and hunted in the woods along the main line of the B&O, a short hike from home. The neighbor lady had it in for me and my buddies, and after seeing me carrying home a rabbit bristling with arrows, told the cops I was shooting animals, not saying which or with what. A knock on my 7th grade classroom door, the sister called me to the door, let me out into the hall, where a detective asked me where I got the gun. I said no gun just bows arrows and varmints. Dad got pissed at the cops, called them up and told them to get fucked for hauling me out of a classroom at St Joe elementary for tagging a goddamn bunny. Posted by: M. For the vets in the crowd, Google (yeah, yeah, I know) launched a program for vets to get one of their certs for free. I was in the first group of 4000 people. Two days of "webinar" at 8 hours each, then some free web based training over the weekend and passed the test tonight. It's very much an overview that doesn't dive into anything technical, but hey, free cert.
It also comes with (if you express an interest) a free AI course that I haven't got to just yet. I'll let you all know when I see anything for later offerings along these lines. But I am not having schadenfreude over the others. It's a sense of foreboding. It's not like last time. The media are handling it much better, but the rank and file are handling it much worse. The shrieking, crying NPCs on social media disowning their friends and family are bad enough. And the lovely ladies going "4B." But there have also been a couple of horrific election-related family massacres, and now these "MATGA" chicks as locating for women to poison their husbands and lovers, as well. 'm enjoying the happy Trump people. I like Trump, and I feel good for his supporters (and myself).
I don't think these people will ever stabilize. I think things are going to get worse at the street level in the coming years, not better. Because of that confidence, it appears as there was no contingency in the event of a loss. That's what I don't get. I'm not exactly splitting atoms with my brain but it was obvious to anyone who actually followed the race Trump was going to win. It was only by how much. Trump had an army of red hat wearing white supremacist Nazis, including a large number of whom were Hispanic and black, who were constantly at his rallies and very publicly supporting him. Harris had paid twerkers and bussed in paid "supporters". And Trump had taken over the RNC and their primary focus was election integrity including thousands of paid lawyers and poll watchers in swing states. They announced what they were going to do for months. Actually make elections as secure as possible for the first time in years. And they did. There were always more of us than them. That's why they cheat. Stop the cheat, win elections. It's not a hard equation. Posted by: JackStraw at November 20, 2024 12:00 AM (LkLld) 397

They failed last Winter. Well, their little batteries were all stone dead. Maxell CR2032's, all test zero volts. Makes me wonder if the devices were on the shelf for a long time before they were sold to me. The OEM sensors lasted a lot longer than that. Doing without, for now. Stupid useless system, anyway.

I have had sushi in a classy Japanese restaurant, and it was fine, but not so wonderful that I would Jones for it. What I do love, and wish I could get more often, is ceviche, which is white sea fish marinated in lemon juice until it goes from translucent to white. Basically pickled or cold-cooked. Very yummy.

Posted by: JQ at November 20, 2024 12:52 AM (njWTi) Most North American cars and pickups use the same bulbs, and the same filaments in them for both stop and turn functions. The turn signal switch connects both bulbs to the stop light switch when no turn is selected. When a turn is selected, the bulb for that side is disconnected from the stop light switch, and connected to the signal flasher. Turn signals get their power normally from the accessory terminal of the ignition switch, and won't work if the key is off. Stop lights get their power from the battery side of the ignition switch, and will work if the key is off. Four-way flashers are powered the same way. First thing to check in this case? Try the 4-way flashers. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 20, 2024 01:01 AM (m7e0/) 488

It's been gentrified to a degree, so that Beale Street no longer features scores of hookers and junkies like it did in the Seventies. But it's still a crime-ridden, dangerous locale. Extremely accurate picture of Memphis at the moment. It's been gentrified to a degree, so that Beale Street no longer features scores of hookers and junkies like it did in the Seventies. But it's still a crime-ridden, dangerous locale. Jackson, Mississippi is on track to become its smaller-scale replica, and Nashville has become a new target of that Venezuelan gang (tren de something) that's making such a name for itself elsewhere. The South ain't doing too good at the moment.

Posted by: Scarymary I'll give them credit for Memphis style BBQ, a personal favorite of our family, but that's about all. Been to the Delta a couple of times, and it's definitely just as you describe. Especially around Clarksdale, near where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul to the Devil to gain the talents of a Blues legend. I'm obviously rather skeptical of the idea, but in the part of the Delta, it's eerie enough that you can envision something like that taking place. Add in some bottle trees and overhearing comments about Hoodoo and High John the Conqueror, and the eerie quotient goes up to X Files/Twilight Zone levels. An academic friend of mine theorizes that the Robert Johnson legend might arise from folk belief in the Loa, specifically Papa Legba, the Voodoo deity who is associated with doorways and crossroads - and of course, Johnson was said to have made his famous bargain at the crossroad just outside Clarksdale. Dang, I just heard a semi-shocking story that reminds me that Trump's victory may bring change to Washington DC, but the leftist totalitarian mindset is still deeply embedded in many states and at the local level, and not only would it "take a long time to roll back" the leftist takeover, any roll-back hasn't even begun, as blue states/sanctuary cities/leftist enclaves continue to spiral into madness at an ever-accelerating rate.
Anyway, here's the story -- just got off the phone with a friend, who told me this: Her husband is a schoolteacher at a K-6 elementary school in California. Last week a second-grader in one of his classes was being disruptive and refusing to pay attention, playing a game on an electronic toy (some sort of Gameboy-type device for little kids) that made a beeping noise and distracted the class and made teaching impossible. No matter what the husband/teacher said, the kid wouldn't stop. (The kid is a known "problem student" and troublemaker, so this wasn't much of a surprise.) So the teacher eventually just calmly lifted the device out of the kid's hand and put it on a side table, saying that the kid would get it back after class... (con't)... Kids openly disrespect him, etc. He feels his life is ruined. Unrelated to any of my few comments earlier, but there is this amazingly insane WWII film scheduled for release that many might enjoy - "Dick Dynamite-1944." The trailer is making the rounds now, and it looks awesome. Imagine a combination of "The Dirty Dozen," "Where Eagles Dare," and the popular pulp novels of the Thirties and Forties. It may turn up in one of Ace's "Is This Something" threads. People are trying to label it as a Grindhouse-style production, but I think a better description would be WWII Jack Reacher with a lack of impulse control and anger management issues. One scene in the trailer has the hero, undercover, about to attend an elegant dinner party. 'What kind of party is this, he asks the doorman, who replies that "It's a Nazi party." The hero smiles and says "My favorite kind." Things for the Nazis do not go well after that. I can't guarantee that it will be to everybody's liking, but it's worth having a look at it.

Many moons ago but I recall the effort of the fish ladders and the onsite (I think) hatcheries. The tour guides spent a lot of time talking about the fish and what they were doing to keep things viable. And the greenies can suck a bag.

The irony? Both my friend and her husband are total moonbats, died-in-the-wool naive white liberals. I've been to their house and heck, they don't have a mere "Black Lives Matter" sign in the window, they actually permanently painted it on their fence.
When she tearfully recounted that he would NEVER do anything racist, I believe her. He's been teaching there for 8 years and until this moment never had a complaint. Anyway, the upshot is, they didn't fire him, but he has to take anti-racism brainwashing classes, and now's he's basically a marked man. People avpid him in the halls. Kids openly disrespect him, etc. He feels his life is ruined. Side note: This is NOT some disadvantaged inner-city school, nor an upper-class suburban school, but a typical/random/average American public school with all races and predominantly average family income. I doubt this will him wake up from his leftist worldview, but it probably caused some cracks in it. Posted by: zombie at November 20, 2024 02:04 AM (pMi6S) I'm in TX so sorry but not sorry for this dude. I have a limited experience in working with kids--helped with the local school book fair. I would not do more. The liability issues. Posted by: Scarymary at November 20, 2024 02:15 AM (t8a1K) 572

I knew how this was going to go from the second you mentioned a disruptive student. >>>When she tearfully recounted that he would NEVER do anything racist, I believe her. He's been teaching there for 8 years and until this moment never had a complaint. I believe it, too. Struggle sessions aren’t actually effective against real racists. And a real racist never would have made the mistake of taking a game from a non-white kid. >>>I doubt this will him wake up from his leftist worldview, but it probably caused some cracks in it. Personally, I doubt it. People are very good at rationalizing being abused, especially when they are devout believers in the worldview that is abusing them. If you met this guy, you'd believe. Very soft-spoken, very dorky, a classic "beta" type. That kind of man is acceptable.
