Posted by: Anna Puma at November 18, 2024 10:29 PM (iU/IZ)

Honestly? I have no idea.

So the good news the smell is a lot less. At one point you could smell the damn thing from 100 feet away. Now I basically got to pop the hood and get my nose over where the poor creature died. Unless the car has been running, in which case you can just stand in front of it with the hood open and catch a whiff.

As for inside? Aaahhhhh...I'm really not sure. I've sprayed all sorts of shit and have got so many striped and bent clips and all I don't even know what I'm smelling anymore.

But it doesn't help things that I have a very dull sense of smell and I've also been congested.

I'm probably gonna go nose blind by this point.

54 I remember before rotary phones.

You picked up the earpiece, waited for the operator to come on, & gave her (in those days all telephone operators were women) the number you were calling. Either the person would pick up, or the operator would come back on, and say "Busy," or "No answer."

My grandparents had these. The earpiece was connected to the speaker by a chord.

It's a good observation. However, I think it might have less to do with the person, and more to do with the precariousness of the position. DNI oversees the cooperation of the intelligence agencies (some of them who have been farming out to contractors who go in and play around with the metadata). They need a stooge in the DNI position. The DOJ is their gatekeeper. No repercussions for wrong doing, or illegality on their side if the DOJ doesn't pursue indictment. Lie before congress, raise funds illegally, pressure your opponent, influence the courts....once you take those abilities away they're naked to blind justice. Kennedy is getting flack due to his willingness to shut down the pharma graft. Dept. of Defense...well, same on the graft.

Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at November 18, 2024 10:53 PM (3/kEz)

They were behind a spring-loaded door on the front panel of my family's first TV, a Visionaire, 17". Looked a lot like a table model counterpart to the "Metropolitan" show here:

www.oldtymeradio.ca/antique-televisions.php

May have been a private brand manufactured by Magnavox.

Vertical hold was a big problem on many older TV sets. Maybe because the vertical sweep frequency was 60 Hz, but not necessarily in sync with the 60 Hz line power.

219 Kenislovas the Lithuanian Beaver Buster really needs an epic theme song. Either something especially Baltic in its composition, or something from the Golden Age of Disney, before they went insane. The Davy Crockett theme song could provide a template there, or the numbers they did for Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill.

"Born on a mountain top in Kvedama,
Christened in the saline waters of the Baltic Sea
Swore to his Papa and his dear Mama
That he'd never leave any beaver free.

Keni, Kenislivas, bane of all the beavers near."

Go to the link. Yes, she was absolutely a Sikh, as is her mother. Unfortunately, Sikhs are not immune to honor killings. There was a very sad case in Vancouver, maybe 40-odd years ago. Young Sikh couple, newlyweds, received a wedding present from her estranged father, an electric kettle. She was estranged from her father because he wanted her to marry the son of one his business cronies, and she refused, and married a man she met on her own.

Well, she plugged in the kettle, and the dynamite concealed in its base killed both her and her husband.

Hey, not fair. Seems as if Aaron Rodgers would be the better comparison. Favre was still a top QB until the NFL wanted the Saints in the Super Bowl so allowed the Saints defense to wreck his ankle with penalty worthy late hits. Favre did not want to come back for his last season as he knew his mobility was gone but allowed his Viking teammates to convince him to return, where the loss of his avoidance ability caused him to play badly.

It's kind of like the ending of Shane and that final scene leaning loosely in the saddle as he passes Boot Hill. What should we read into that?

When it went wonkie we would pull off the knob and slide the 'screwdriver' in - you could tell when you made contact - and make fine adjustments.
Posted by: Braenyard at November 18, 2024 11:55 PM (CjRYq)

Back in the day, there were two main types of TV tuners. There were "switch tuners" and "turret tuners". The former had a 12-position wafer switch, with maybe six layers of wafers, one for each of the tuned circuits in the tuner's circuitry. They went "click, click" as you turned the knob. The turret tuners had a drum about the size of a soup can, with inset Bakelite strips, each of which contained several coils and capacitors, making up the tuned circuits for each channel. There was also a notched disc with a detent roller. Those tuners made a "clunk, clunk" sound as the knob was turned.

Ours had channel knobs (VHF and UHF) with adjustment "rings" around them for fine tuning.

There was both a "channel 2" and a "channel 4" where we lived, and the Atari 2600 would "broadcast" on either 2 or 3, so we had to set it to 3. But you had to mess with the fine tuning so you wouldn't get ghosting from TV channels 2 or 4 over the top of your game of Missile Command. The tuner drifted a bit with time or temperature or the phase of the moon, or something. I guess it wasn't very high quality, heh.

I’ve stayed up late at the overlook and watched for the Marfa lights, down near the bug bend era. You can stop in a little rise and the topography is such that you can probably look over 30 - 40 miles of desert scrubland. At first you don’t see anything but then - stuff shows up. The one that got me was 2 l that looked like headlights out where there weren’t any roads. Well I figured maybe someone 4 wheeling late at night, or atmospherics bouncing an image in from somewhere else. Watched it for a couple minutes - and then suddenly one of the lights broke right and the other broke left and they took off at 180 degrees to each other.

One of the comments was, and I paraphrase: "Meh, it's just a foldover error, not worth very much" I would tend to agree. Looks like another bill got between the plate and the bill being printed, and some of its wet ink transferred to the blank area. It's a production error, not a design error. 432 Color TVs were pretty expensive, at first. My parents weren’t poor, but they had 1. Central air conditioning when this was not common in the middle class-ish nabe. I think the Apollo space program maybe helped spur people to save up enough for a Color set. The networks didn’t start broadcasting in Color in earnest until about 1967.

Bonanza was designed to be watched in a TV outlet store. Every episode, they are all wearing Reds, Yellows, Greens, Purple, Orange, you name it. I just spent $500 bucks, let me see some fucking color!

439 225-75R18 exist, and would gain you an inch in ride height. Plenty of load capacity for an SUV.

tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=225-65r18-225-75r18

Those sound most interesting. I will be investigating them. I want something closer to a truck tire and that extra inch is kind of perfect for the roads I drive around on. My RAV4 TRD is not a Jeep but it is remarkably capable. An extra inch is something useful but the heavier rubber is a big win. Thank you.

Yeah, that one stuck around on the front panel for a long time. Likewise brightness and contrast.

Horizontal hold got relegated to the back (and later, to the interior of the set) around the early '70s, if I remember right.

Muntz aka “Mad Man Muntz” sold stripped dosn, inexpensive sets for use in markets where sensitive and selective tuner sections could pick up distant stations. In the kitchen picking off the meat from a roasted chicken, all of a sudden there's a loud slamming sound from the front porch. Both dogs jump up and run there, as do I.

It's the screen door, slipped the latch and is banging in the wind. Grab it, pull it shut and head back into the kitchen. In the seconds it took to do that I find the chicken sitting on the dining room floor and Flash, our 16 mth old, running out of the room.

Rinsed it off and was tempted to save some for myself but decided it was cat and dog food. I'm really having trouble with him chewing things up, but I truly did laugh and needed that. It was the absurdity of it all.
