After 1900 Remington produced an evocative series of nocturnes that feature darkness as an essential narrative element. Rendered in a muted palette of blue, green, and brown, A Reconnaissance depicts three cavalry soldiers and their horses in a moonlit, snow-blanketed landscape.

I recently saw some of his work in person. So amazing. I really enjoyed it. Or maybe it was the setting. Or the folks I was with. Anyway, he imparts a sense of the West. True, the fellow on horseback has a U.S. Army style of coat with the buttons; he could be another regular soldier. On the other hand, the Indians often used elements of white people's clothing, especially in bad weather.

The Met:
After 1900 Remington produced an evocative series of nocturnes that feature darkness as an essential narrative element. Rendered in a muted palette of blue, green, and brown, A Reconnaissance depicts three cavalry soldiers and their horses in a moonlit, snow-blanketed landscape. An officer and scout have ventured forth to a hillcrest to survey a distant tree line, alert to the possibility of confrontation. By turning the figures away from the viewer, Remington creates an aura of moody mystery and enhances the suspense of an uncertain outcome. This one of my favorite Remington paintings. You can feel the cold, the light wind and the silence, perhaps broken by one of the horses. The stars showing against the deep night sky, the only real contrast in the image, enhances the cold and quiet. The bright moonlight allows the viewer to see enough detail, bringing out shadows in the snow, but doesn't clash with the soft blues, greens and grays of the scene. It is hugely effective and evocative.

That could also be George Peppard and Henry Fonda from How the West Was Won, with Ricardo Montalban from Cheyenne Autumn on the horse. (Yeah, I watch a lot of Westerns.)
The standing soldier on the left: His hat looks closer to regulation, while the one on the right seems to have a hat that's been weathered a lot and serves only to keep sun, rain, and snow off of his face. He could thus be a scout, Indian or white, while the one on the horse could be another recruit. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 21, 2024 09:43 AM (J2vNu) 54

Posted by: 18-1 at November 21, 2024 09:28 AM (oZhjI) *** Not quite. It was big news here locally in FL-01 when it all came about. No one hired the con man, Joel Greenberg, and he was not "fresh out of prison" when he made the allegations against Gaetz. He was under federal indictment on a whole list of charges and was out on bond awaiting trial. Looking for a reduced sentence, he entered into a plea deal with federal prosecutors by agreeing to provide information about Gaetz to the FBI. As you correctly stated, the FBI closed its investigation when it determined that Greenberg (and the one chick who supposedly corroborated Greenberg's allegations against Gaetz) to be unreliable. Got to leave in a bit to deposit a check for work. Yes, we still use checks now and then in the 21st Century.
I hate checks only slightly less than I hate automatic checking account bill paying. Hey, weve got this ridiculously insecure system that allows anyone who sees this piece of paper to withdraw any arbitrary sum from a checking account. How can we improve on that? What if we were to take the same information and store it in plain text on networked computers, so that anyone with access to the network anywhere in the world can withdraw an arbitrary sum from the account? And to make it easier well only use minimal security and make sure even thats easily overridden using public information and a phone call or email. 176 We don't give a shit about the enmity between England and the Dutch because we don't know about it and because WTF?
Didn't they have a naval battle like 500 years ago? --------------------- They had four wars, and then one with the French. The Dutch Republic upset the Aristos. She told me "stupid people" elected Trump. And also that they bought "the lies about the economy". She said the economy is amazing. Also it's not fair that Kamala was blamed for what this administration did because "the vice president has no power". I didn't argue because I had to pretend to nod along, but it was fun to listen to. Same person told me back in April that Biden's condition was fantastic and he was sharper than ever. I said they were going to replace him with Harris and she said no way there's no reason to. Posted by: ... at November 21, 2024 10:21 AM (tjmEP) 209

In my opinion there are few more stimulating scenes than a sub-freezing night in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, lit by a full moon and millions of stars, walking through snow with a lightly crusted surface. You can hear the mist of your breath freezing in the night air and the steady "crunch, crunch, crunch" of your boots in the snow. Add a cabin with a glowing light inn the window and smoke from a blazing fireplace rising from the chimney and a pot of Missus Muldoon's chili on the stove, and you are talking almost heaven.

One that makes sense, and is really cool -- between the 3rd and 4th quarters at Florida Gators football games -- they play "I won't back down". Tom Petty was from Gainesville. Tradition started after he passed away.

All politics are local & K-12 public schools need 'saving.' Perhaps engage in a renaissance period of Western American history and art. (It would, of course, be much more broad than I recall it so many years ago by including, i.e., the Black Cowboys of Texas, Vaqueros, etc.) Maya Angelou, "We can learn to see each other and see ourselves in each other and recognize that human beings are more alike than we are unalike." 🤷♀️ Posted by: L - Rooster today, feather duster tomorrow. That could also be George Peppard and Henry Fonda from How the West Was Won, with Ricardo Montalban from Cheyenne Autumn on the horse. (Yeah, I watch a lot of Westerns.)
The Hollywood film Cheyenne Autumn is terrible. Were it in my power I would order all copies gathered up.and burned. Marie Sandoz's book, Cheyenne Autumn should required reading in 8th grade and be on the Commandant's Recommended Reading List if not already on it. Recommend: The Last of the Dogmen as entertainment after reading Cheyenne Autumn. Posted by: waepnedmann at November 21, 2024 03:00 PM (jurm8) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0736 seconds. |
