The thing about SPs and a lot of other counter cultural 'things/artists/etc' is that, without the dominant normal culture are they any good on their own merits?

An interesting bit. Lewis Capaldi's 'Someone you love.'
Do not think I had ever heard the artist before a couple weeks ago and when I first heard the song I kept thinking 'What is hitting my ear wrong about his voice?' He's scottish. It's his accent. And I was struck that a lot of modern pop for the past 40 or 50 years have had their accents muted to the point where it is hard to tell they have them. https://tinyurl.com/bdz5nrxy Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 16, 2024 07:42 PM (bss/y) 11

I saw Carl Palmer and his current band in concert several months ago. Half of the night, he played live drums while flanked by large video screens on each side of him. Video of Greg Lake on one, Keith Emerson on the other -- Palmer played along to songs from their iconic early 90s Royal Albert Hall show. The look on his face as he kept watching and "playing along" with his late band mates was just awesome!

As antidote to ELP's bastardized, trivialized version, here's the original "Fanfare for the Common Man", as composed by Aaron Copland and performed by the US Marine Band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KxMc_tyQBo Copland composed it in the dark days of 1942, in the midst of a war of the common man against the "elites" of Japan and Germany who would enslave us. On November 5, America performed another fanfare for the common man over the so-called "elites". Let Copland's music celebrate that victory! Posted by: Nemo at November 16, 2024 08:15 PM (S6ArX) 70

From Jethro Tull's 1987 album, "Crest of a Knave":
Steel Monkey https://is.gd/AghAGr "Crest of a Knave" is the album that won them "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental" at the 1989 Grammy Awards, beating out Metallica (who were apparently more than a little salty about that at the time.) And this song is actually how I found Jethro Tull, and from there I bought the entire catalog. One of my all time favourites of theirs is "Broadsword" from their "Broadsword and the Beast" album from 1982: https://youtu.be/7itp81Q7XGk Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 16, 2024 08:28 PM (O7YUW) 106

Aww, Elvis. My good friend I lost to cancer this year was an Elvis fan. He was my boss for awhile and then my peer - my promotion was thanks to him and all he taught me. When you negotiate CBAs you spend an inordinate amount of time in the back room and very little time at the table until the last 24 hours. To pass the time we would watch terrible, and I mean terrible, movies and create our own MST3000. We would also do what is your favorite skinny Elvis, fat Elvis, movie Elvis.
Good memories. Maybe a little teary, but good. Thank you. Posted by: Piper at November 16, 2024 08:29 PM (QzINz) 110

Caught a replay of a Casey Kasem's America's Top 40 from 1978 while running errands today. Fortunately, I heard the top 8 songs which were ok. In past I've caught a replay and heard the songs nearer to the bottom of the list. Holy crap where there some terrible songs. The type of songs you want to poke your ear drums out with pencils to stop the sound.
I always wondered how they picked the long distance dedications. You just know there were 1970s Morons sending fake requests and outlandish stories just to get on the air. "Hi, Casey, would you play Jimmy Buffet's Boat Drinks for my long distance dedication? You, see I worked as a Yacht girl on a boat out of Key West, and was the play thing for the crew. I'll always remember those memories of running to the rail and throwing up after a night of drinking boat drinks and the STD parties. I want to dedicate the song to the crew of the Been Over. ELP…
Somewhat entertaining, but not something I indulge in at all. I’m a HUGE Pink Floyd fan! Have been since I was 13. Synthesizers totally rule! That said, Gary Wright’s Dream Weaver album was truly incredible. No guitar whatsoever, except for a minor showing on one song. ELP had whiny synthesizer action. The others were truly melodic, with PF showing absolute genius. I still know all of the words from each song on Animals. An unsurpassed masterpiece. @Doof - If you loved RATT, check out something lead singer Stephen Pearcy did in a band called "Arcade" with a track called "Messed up World"

Very obscure unless you were in Seattle for the original band or 15 years later for the cover version. Maybe Nurse R or some other NW commenters remember: Kim The Waitress?

Because it was the 80s, we listened to "Love Shack" every time we ran laps in gym when I was in elementary school. My teacher must have been a fan, but I have no idea how they got away with that! I think a lot of the lyrics went over our heads.

Another good one! My wife refers to the entire set of albums by this group as simply, "The RATT song". :-) Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 16, 2024 09:52 PM (O7YUW) 266

Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at November 16, 2024 09:50 PM (lUFok) They were a Canadian band, and got a lot of airplay in Canada. "Go For Soda" was a big hit for them. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 16, 2024 09:52 PM (EOLxR) 267

I think Blancmange is a pretty obscure 80s band.

Oh yeah, Kim the Waitress was the song. Green Pajamas is the band. Material Issue (Chicago?) did a cover around year 2000.

@261/Doof: "Nice! Wish I had seen them back in the day. I was just a bit too young and they faded too fast."
I saw them in a relatively small venue (Roadhouse Ruby's) in Kansas City in 1997 - problem was they had the sound set up for a LARGE venue. Other than shooting on the range, I believe I can blame this concert for a good bit of my tinnitus. Shoulda brought hearing protection. Lesson learned. 131 Who was it, Don Henley? (It helps that I hate the eagles.)
I think the Eagles (or what remains of them) are in residence at the Sphere in Vegas. There are many bands I'd like to see at the Sphere, but the Eagles ain't one of them. Maybe just Joe Walsh, though. Posted by: Frasier Crane at November 16, 2024 08:39 PM (9IWfl) The story I've heard is that when Joe Walsh joined the Eagles he had a pretty bad substance abuse problem and was probably headed for a bad ending. The Eagles told him that if he was going to play with them he had to get straight, and he did, and has been ever since, which probably saved his life. I generally think the Eagles suck, but I'll give them a little credit for saving Joe. I had a "Driving tape" mix that earned me one hell of a speeding ticket. It included Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55" followed by his unofficial sequel to that one called "Privacy", and then I included Joe Satriani's "One Big Rush" and finally AC/DC's Thunderstruck.
I learned to use Cruise control after that. Here's Joe Satriani's "One Big Rush" https://youtu.be/joI9V_5ewN4 Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 16, 2024 10:01 PM (O7YUW) 277
