  • The EU has fined Facebook 800 million euros for making the Facebook Marketplace part of Facebook. (Ars Technica)

Even Ars Technica knows this shit is coming to an end:
In the past five years, EU regulators have also passed a landmark piece of legislation–the Digital Markets Act–with the aim to slow down dominant tech players and boost the local tech industry.
There is no local tech industry.
However, some observers expect the new commission, which is set to start a new 5-year term in weeks, to strike a more conciliatory tone over fears of retaliation from the incoming Trump administration.
There are going to be so many tariffs. Beautiful tarriffs. You've never seen tariffs like them.

Holocure 0.7 Trailer Video of the Day

Holocure 0.7 is out today.

This is a Hololive-related game as the name would suggest, but unofficial, fan-made, and completely free. (Hololive is perfectly happy with that although technically they own the IP.)

And it's good.

It's basically a Vampire Survivors clone where you battle swarms of annoying fans as one of - hang on - 47 playable characters, all with unique weapons and skills, and a crazy number of upgrades that switch around randomly between games.

It's also starting to be a Stardew Valley clone with home-building, farming, fishing, and mining (and slave labour), and apparently now a Jump King clone, and has a casino where you can bribe the dealer, and I don't know what else. The Jump King sub-game isn't even in the trailer; Calliope Mori (of Hyte Y40 Limited Edition PC case fame) got early access (since she's in the game) and stumbled across it.

Small problem for the team working on the game is that Hololive is adding new talents faster than they can be added to the game. There are two EN generations and four JP generations yet to be added, with the latest group appearing only a week ago.

I don't know, but the odds are pretty good on the moth's side. He can fly up where they can't reach him.

Stirling has been an insect hunter since his kitten days. More than once a wasp got in here and he spotted it before I did. I'd kill it and give him a treat.

24 We have a Panasonic cordless set of phones, with answerer, for the landline. It has built-in call blocking that works very well (uh, once I switched it on... the default setting was off, grr)

Anyway, it's nice because hubby CANNOT manage to ignore "unknown" callers. He just HAS TO answer any call that rings through... and, sometimes, his mind isn't all there, iykwim... it's not good for him to talk with scammers!

Why do we keep landline?

Because: cell service is still *crap* in our area. Not enough bandwidth, especially if there's a Function at some venue nearby.

Posted by: JQ at November 15, 2024 04:29 AM (njWTi)

25 @19/Ciampino: "Scam phone calls? Caller ID. If I don't recognize it I don't pick up. If it's important they can leave a voice mail and number. "

This is the right way to handle incoming calls.

Caller ID spoofers are another thing I'm seeing. They'll use an inactive number in your area code and local exchange to make you think it's someone in your city trying to reach you, hoping you'll be more likely to answer.

The best one was when they accidentally sent the "Calling this #" field over to the "send this # as the caller-id string" field, so it looked like I was calling myself. Since I know better than to risk a temporal causality event, and since I follow the rule above, I told myself to talk to the machine and I'd better make it good. :-)

When I buy my house, if it already has a modern shower with a plexiglas door, that will be a big selling point. Otherwise, I'd love to get one of the modern Jacuzzi remodel things that I see the ads for with a seat and a shelf in it. Of course I have no idea how much they cost. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 15, 2024 04:57 AM (omVj0)

39 I keep a landline for mostly security. Doesn't cost a lot, but Frontier has to add on all those charges that cells don't have. Like a fee to pay for the underprivileged, taxes and taxes and taxes. Frontier has a big reel of fiber parked in my back yard for something. But I have a local fiber service which works just fine. Frontier is owned by Verizon now I think. The Panasonic phone does have lots of features and answers all the spam.

We are doing a "Digging in the Past" program in my Cub Scout den. This week they "invented" their own dinosaur using paper parts (glued to another piece of paper), markers and stickers.

Two of them included a flaming asteroid headed Earth's way in the scene. I remarked, "I see that your creature is about to have a really bad day."

"Yup!" was their gleeful response.

50 @36/JQ: "The only thing missing, is "white list" capability. Maybe there's an upgrade by now?"

At one point I was considering setting up my own in-house PBX using the Asterisk software on a PC (needs line cards, one for the incoming line, one for the in-house extensions) to do exactly this and more (set of rules handles incoming calls.)

Known whitelisted caller? Check the current time and if it's in the allowable "put the call through" hours, ring the handsets and display the caller-id string, otherwise, send them to their personalized voicemail box.

Unknown caller? Straight to the automated attendant with the option to dial the extension of the person they're trying to reach (this is essentially a password so I could ring into my own home if I was calling from a payphone, and the call would be put through to the handsets with a customized caller-id string saying it's me, calling from a different number. Don't enter an extension? Off to voicemail you go.

Blacklisted number? (Known scammer/advertising spammer): You get this audio (and no way to leave a message):
https://is.gd/wCA7S3
(turn your audio down a lot for that one, it's loud.)

77 I wonder how long the migration from X to Bluesky is going to last. I have a feeling that the enthusiasm is going to wane.

Best case scenario for them: they finally stick it to that bastard Musk, kill X, and reduce his net worth by 10%.

Most likely scenario: they all quietly return.

Best case scenario for us: they remain sequestered on BlueSky and are stunned every two years when reality doesn't match what they tell each other.

The scope of work for the bathroom here is tear out everything down to the studs and the slab, repair any insect or water damaged framing and then restore. Tile on the floor and in the tub alcove. I'm doing all the electrical and buying all the fixtures (tub, toilet and dual sink vanity). Bids range from $13-18k so far.
