Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - November 13 2024 [TRex]

While wandering around AoS HQ this evening, I found a set of keys. The attached keychain has a tag with three letters - ONT. You know what that means, kids? Yep. Fire up the hot rod and take it for a spin. Hooray!

Welcome to the Wednesday ONT. This the Hammer of Justice edition.

A large rock sits in the center of campus at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. It is a blank canvas and available for painting on a first come, first served basis. Some efforts are artistic, others are...ummm....less so. Themes typically include upcoming events and big football games. This was the mural the students painted for Veterans Day 2024. Proof that the kids are alright (at least some kids)...

Two - sometime back on one of the ONTs, you wrote a brief account of hearing your mother calling you and your sibling from the direction of some shrub and brush a good distance from your home....at a time when your mother was definitely in your home and had not called anybody. A very creepy situation and one that more than a few of us wondered about - not my business, of course, but what do you think actually happened?
Posted by: Cardinal Biggles at November 13, 2024 09:48 PM (tmPIh)

The voice (in her voice) called from all the way in the back of the property, more than 1000' away. Voice was faint but called, in a stilted way using my and my brother's name specifically to "come here right now!". I asked my brother if he heard it, and his face, turning a bit pale said "yes". We knew mom was in the house and ran there instead; she was cooking in the kitchen and said she hadn't. She always told us when we were little to never listen if voices called us back there...all I'll say to what I think it was is that there are more things in heaven and earth than science acknowledges.

Jim in Kalifornia, it is awesome to hear that you are back home, and here's hoping for nothing but good news on the horizon.

Second, minor and possible none-of-my-business questions, but several of us were intrigued from an ONT entry of yours a short while back. It was something like you and your sibling, as children, heard your mother calling you from a distant point, a brush area near a creek. Yet you and your sibling saw that your mother was in the house and hadn't called anybody. Again, probably none of my business, but that's a fairly singular and creepy occurrence, and I can't help asking if there was more to the story here.

181 I picked up an old toaster at a rummage sale, a Sunbeam AT-W

It is an odd toaster, it does not have an external lever to move the slice of bread and start the toasting, what you do is put the slice in the slot, and it lowers it automatically, and then when done (theoretically) it raises it back up to be removed, automatically

It is the freakiest thing in the world, and it was built when Sunbeam was a premier mark.

I have to adjust it, it is out of whack and it burns the toast. It is the first toaster I have had that reliably toasts home made bread though.

No. If we're hoping - I'd hope he'd pick people for every position that had such an obvious, fire breathing hatred for each agency that the Senate would blush at the prospect of even discussing their candidacy.

Don't even mention her name there.

Seger was in Ann Arbor when he did "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," but he took a break from the business to go to Eastern. He spent a couple of years just standing in with Teegarden and Van Winkle, who'd had a big hit record at the time.
The whole Silver Bullet thing was after he "went commercial."

During that time, he had a stagehands' card, and used to work his own concerts, saying he made more money humping the gear than he did singing.

414 I was watching the ShoeOnHead video again and one thing really struck me.

She pointed in most of the video that the Democrats have demonized men and are out to get them which is what has drawn them to voting GOPe. She then notes that this is a mistake because the GOPe isn't going to help men either.

And...here is where she misses the re-alignment that Trump brought in. Mitt Romney's policies wouldn't have done much to help young men...but that's because his policies would have been barely different from Obama.

But Trump? Presuming he is successful you are going to see something very different from old school uniparty corporatism in a social-left storm trooper uniform as we've been facing for now for most of this millennium.

Sure, Trump would have to fill the position with a warm body and appoint the Czar's, they would have no real authority and the moment they tried to tell anyone what to do or direct action the Donks would go to court so fast your head would spin.

This sort of thing was always going to be the stick wicket.

https://is.gd/O2pzB5

[Washington Times: "How Fracking Has Saved Obama"]
By Richard W. Rahn (2014)
https://is.gd/T8Ay89

[Pull Quote:]
"Without fracking of oil and gas deposits, there would have been no economic growth in the U.S. over the past five years."

2nd paragraph: "During the first five years of the Obama administration, economic growth averaged a dismal 1.2 percent, and only 2.2 percent in the four years since the recovery from the Great Recession began ... [and] the contribution to GDP from the development of [FRACKING] is now running at more than 2.5 percent of GDP per year and rapidly growing. This addition to GDP is expected to peak in 2016 at about 3.2 of GDP, and thereafter reach a permanently higher, steady state, which would not have occurred without [FRACKING] production."

BOTTOM LINE: Through DogEater's first 5 years, FRACKING contributed more to GDP than the overall economy's GDP (would have been NEGATIVE otherwise), and the FRACKING component was expected to rise during his final 2 years (those #s obviously N/A at that time).

498 Merging one thread theme with another, people revealing the relative distance of their age to 29 and discussion of the mysteries of the female of the species, when did the whole "chicks dig scars" trope emerge? Scars as a sign of social prestige has a definite history in limited contexts, the best example being the Heidelberg alumni, especially the Prussians, who seemed to have treasured the scars they received in student dueling societies. So we've got a late nineteenth/early twentieth century example of scars, especially facial scars, visually denoting the elite of the day in one particular country, but I'm not sure whether that tracks with attractiveness.

Disclaimer: Not being a woman, I have no idea if the trope itself holds any truth, and I'm far enough from 29 to suggest that those aspects of masculinity women find attractive are universal.

I think he is probably better suited to VA, but it is important to get somebody who believes that having forces able to defend the US, protect the sea lanes, and project force wherever the people of the US deem necessary is the only reason we have a military, and all the SJW pandering is detrimental to the cause. Hegseth seems to be all there for that.

Remember all the hoopla about Mattis in 2017? How did thst really work out for Trump? He had the credentials, but he didn't have the mindset for a Trump administration, preferring business as usual. Trump has learned from that. Take the person who shares you vision, or at least accepts your vision and will help you implement it, to the person who has his own agenda.

"Why aren't you a Republican?" they ask.

"Republicanism isn't an ideology or platform. Republicanism is merely a brand in coopetition with Democrats. Like Coke and Pepsi. Neither side wants the other defeated, they only want to make sure a third competitor doesn't enter the fray and gain footing. This is why Democrats tank it periodically, lest conservatives organize in a group outside the control of establishment headship" says I.

There IS a vacancy appointment for a Senate seat, such as Rubio's. The appointed Senator serves until 2026.

However, House vacancies (Gaetz) are filled by special election, not by appointment. DeSantis has some latitude as to when he wants to schedule the special elections to replace Gaetz and Waltz. I'm pretty sure both special elections will be on the same date-- to avoid the expense of having 2 separate election days.

Gaetz has already resigned, in order to allow for a special.election before the new Congress sits on Jan 3, (though really to short circuit the release of the ethics committee report, which is almost guaranteed to leak anyway if there is so much as a single Democrat on the committee.) Since the elections for Waltz and Gaetz replacements will be in two different jurisdictions anyway, there probably won't be an unreasonable amount of added expense if they are held on different days.

586 Morning, insomaniacals. The 1972 reminder is wonderful, and at the same time saddening, huh?

Speaking of 72, that's the temp outside. Not much better than yesterday, as the humidity is still high, but 4-5 degrees makes a difference in a workout. In theory it's supposed to be 70 as a high tomorrow. Y'know, the sort of temp it *should* have been in Sept., and is in civilized climes.

The cats are tearing around chasing each other in fun, or fighting, I don't know which. I broke it up just in case it was the latter.

Thursday. Yay?

587 When I was in High School cars still had vacuum tube radios. I was for a time learning to repair them but life took me elsewhere.

I can remember when I was small that the AM radio in my dad's '58 Chevy took a few moments to warm up before it began to play.

588 Joey Mannarino

@JoeyMannarinoUS

Matt Gaetz just resigned from Congress so that DeSantis can call a special election eight weeks from today and his seat will not go empty for a minute.

Also, this means Gaetz knows something about confirmations.

They’re likely going recess for the whole Cabinet.

We’re about to save this damn country.

The left here is now in overdrive to get rid of Netanyahu. A new "scandal" pops up in the media every day.
