Trump Announces Director of National Intelligence Pick: Tulsi Gabbard

I'm not sure I love this pick on qualification or policy grounds, but is in keeping with Trump's Party of Unity campaign closing message. I will be open to it.

He also picked Maro Rubo for Secretary of State.

Tulsi is too much of a peacenik absolutist to me, and Rubo seems like a true believing neocon who's only slightly moderated his views.

But I don't think that's a bad thing. Trump may be trying to put together a Lincolnian "team of rivals," with people of very diverse views, to get a balance of opinion and advice.

It's interesting, at least, if that's what he's doing.

Update: but does maro rubo have the heart -- or the heartlessness -- to purge the State Department? Can he take the fire? Or does he want to be adored?

I suspect the latter.

Supposedly -- supposedly -- he's going to pick... Matt Gaetz for AG. Matt Gaetz. Are you kidding me?

That's #based.

He also will supposedly appoint Kash Patel -- who blew up the Russiagate hoax by revealing all of its lie -- to head the FBI, according to Steve Bannon.

Wow, those last two are going to drive the left crazy. If those are real.

Someone I trust believes that Kash Patel himself is putting out these "leaks" that Trump is picking him to head the CIA or FBI. Trying to get some "heat" going for him.

But someone Trump definitely did name:

Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense pick:

I am honored to announce that I have nominated Pete Hegseth to serve in my Cabinet as The Secretary of Defense. Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country. Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America's enemies are on notice - Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down. Pete is a graduate of Princeton University, and has a Graduate Degree from Harvard University. He is an Army Combat Veteran who did tours in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan. For his actions on the battlefield, he was decorated with two Bronze Stars, as well as a Combat Infantryman's Badge. Pete has been a host at FOX News for eight years, where he used that platform to fight for our Military and Veterans. Pete's recent book, "The War on Warriors," spent nine weeks on the New York Times best-sellers list, including two weeks at NUMBER ONE. The book reveals the leftwing betrayal of our Warriors, and how we must return our Military to meritocracy, lethality, accountability, and excellence. Pete has also led two Veterans Advocacy organizations, leading the fight for our Warriors, and our great Veterans. Nobody fights harder for the Troops, and Pete will be a courageous and patriotic champion of our "Peace through Strength" policy.

Hegseth has declared that the military must be reformed, and "woke sh*t has got to go."

The left is attacking this choice claiming he's just a "morning show host." Um, no, he's a combat veteran who reached the high rank of Major and won two bronze stars.

People are questioning if he has the management skills to run the DOD but... doesn't a major have thousands of soldiers under him? Update: EFG says no, a major doesn't necessarily have command experience over more than a platoon.

Hegseth's book, The War on Warriors, is all about military wokeism:

Pete Hegseth joined the Army to fight extremists. Then that same Army called him one. The military Pete joined twenty years ago was fiercely focused on lethality, competency, and color blindness. Today our brass are following the rest of our country off the cliff of cultural chaos and weakness.

Americans with common sense are fighting this on many fronts, but if we can't save the meritocracy of our military, we're definitely going to lose everywhere else.

The War on Warriors uncovers the deep roots of our dysfunction--a society that has forgotten the men who take risks, cut through red tape, and get their hands dirty. The only kind of men prepared to face the dangers that the Left pretends don't exist. Unlike issues of education or taxes or crime, this problem doesn't have a zip code solution. We can't move away from it. We can't avoid it. We have only one Pentagon. Either we take it back or surrender it altogether.

The left is melting down about this. Jim Acosta and Joy Reid are just beside themselves!

"In a sign he has been making his cabinet selections while watching TV, Trump picks Fox anchor Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense," Acosta tweeted.

So just like Warren, he isn't being honest/informative about Hegseth's actual background. Some "journalist" -- he can't even be bothered to do five minutes of research on Hegseth's background.

Fox's Janice Dean said somehow Acosta missed Hegseth's "three deployments including Iraq and Afghanistan with Two Bronze Stars in your smug little post." Fox contributor Ben Domenech noted Acosta's "experience" consisted of "his two Bronze stars for combat in the White House press room." Fox contributor Joe Concha laughed at him, speculating he might be out the door in the cuts coming to CNN, "You'll never guess who will be one of the first to be let go when CNN does its massive cuts next month..."

59 Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
It is my Great Honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz, of Florida, is hereby nominated to be The Attorney General of the United States. Matt is a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney, trained at the William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice. Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department. On the House Judiciary Committee, which performs oversight of DOJ, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, and exposing alarming and systemic Government Corruption and Weaponization. He is a Champion for the Constitution and the Rule of Law...

Most politicians staff with their own age group, their peers. They don't have much contact with younger generations .
Trump has good contact with his kids, and they cover a large age range and are very influential in their own right.

Don and Eric seem to have weighed in, and those proposals suggested their own nominees.

117 People are questioning if he has the management skills to run the DOD but... doesn't a major have thousands of soldiers under him?

Eh, no.

A Captain commands a company. Which has a couple of hundred. Give or take.

A Lieutenant Colonel commands a battalion. Which is about four or five times the size of a company. Give or take.

A Major is right between the two and doesn’t really tend to command anything. He could be the Battalion Commanders XO. His right hand man. The hammer. But not generally a commander.

And not to knock this guy…but retiring at 20 as a major generally is not knocking it out of the park, career wise. It is the lowest rank he could have retired at, as an officer.

Unless he did like ten years as an enlisted man before getting commissioned as an officer.

But generally speaking, a major does not have any more command experience than a term as a platoon leader and a company commander.

143 Not a veteran, but my understanding is a major in the Army infantry typically heads up a battalion which is less than 1,000 men, or, "men" in Biden's Army.

You don't get command over a thousand or more until you make at least Colonel.

Also if you're a major who's NOT in the infantry, i.e. intelligence, MPs, artillery, etc., you may see command over just a few hundred or less.

My nephew was a Captain in Field Artillery and he had very little interaction with enlisted personnel. Most everyone he worked with was an engineer and hence a commissioned officer.

But whatever, I still say Hegseth is qualified, more so maybe than if he were higher rank.

But, what I think is more important than the head at the top, are those who will appoint Trump loyalists below them.

Consider these named as heads have already assured Trump the next 10 positions at the agency are the folks Trump really needs; e.g. "I can't get this person through the Senate, but I can get you--and you'll appoint them to this job."
Which is also insurance against them going rouge--stay in line or I fire you and the second takes your job w/o Senate approval.

270 Oprah Winfrey Responds To Claims She
Was Paid 'Personal Fee' To Endorse Kamala Harris

Days after an exhausting election cycle, Oprah Winfrey is being accused of accepting money to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

The Washington Examiner published an article last week investigating the Harris campaign’s spending. The conservative news outlet reported that Harris’ team paid upwards of $15 million for “event production,” including $1 million paid to Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions.

“Not true,” Winfrey replied on video. “I did not get paid a penny. Ever.”

“My production company Harpo was asked to bring in set design, lights, cameras, microphones, crew, producers, and every other item necessary (including the benches and chairs we sat on) to put on a live production,” she wrote.

“I did not take any personal fee. However the people who worked on that production
needed to be paid. And were. End of story.”

279 The choice of Hegseth reminds me of a move made by Teddy Roosevelt when he took office; he moved BlackJack Pershing to be the head of the Army over 21 or 22 more senior commanders, who of course were outraged. (especially since the Army brass had never like Pershing). But TR was facing an old and sclerotic leadership in the Army of his day, and he wanted someone whol would retire all the old generals and replace them with new field officers of a much younger generation.

This move is why, a few years later, the US was able to participate with a good record in WW1, as opposed to the Spanish American War, which was a victory but was also mostly a high casualty fiasco.

319 The choice of Hegseth reminds me of a move made by Teddy Roosevelt when he took office; he moved BlackJack Pershing to be the head of the Army over 21 or 22 more senior commanders, who of course were outraged. (especially since the Army brass had never like Pershing). But TR was facing an old and sclerotic leadership in the Army of his day, and he wanted someone whol would retire all the old generals and replace them with new field officers of a much younger generation.

Here is Ike's status at the start of WWII.

396 296 I still worry that Tulsi is another Nikki Haley, and is trying to cut Trump off at the knees, but it was a big risk she took joining him so her intentions might be pure. If so hopefully she does take that woman scorn energy and just goes nuts on lefties.
Posted by: Rbastid at November 13, 2024 04:27 PM (5uIH1)

I doubt any politicians intentions are ever PURE, but my gut on Tulsi is that she will be a good pick. I've seen her on many podcasts, speaking for many hours at a time, and she has always come off as very sincere and likeable.

And I imagine Trump got the same impression.

She also got called a Russian asset by HRC and was relentlessly harassed by the TSA, so she's got some axes to grind. Also, lets not forget -- she got drummed out of leadership of the dem party by saying that the intel community is full of shit about Assad and chemical weapons in Syria (thus the "shes a Russian!!!" accusations) among other things.

But TR was facing an old and sclerotic leadership in the Army of his day, and he wanted someone whol would retire all the old generals and replace them with new field officers of a much younger generation.

The Hill, 11/10/24, 'Murphy on Democrats’ losses: ‘Our tent is too small’

In part, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) offered his thoughts on Democrats’ losses in this year’s elections in a Sunday thread on the social platform X.

“We are out of touch with the crisis of meaning/purpose fueling MAGA,” Murphy said in the thread. “We refuse to pick big fights. Our tent is too small.”

The Connecticut Senator noted multiple issues he thinks the American left is struggling with when it comes to reaching voters, including having “never fully grappled with the wreckage of fifty years of neoliberalism” and moving “past the way people are feeling (alone, impotent, overwhelmed) and straight to uninspiring solutions.”

Ehhhh... I think he probably has skeletons in his closet. He definitely strikes me as the type.

But who knows?

Also, the story with the 17 year old was very convoluted. Age of consent is Florida is 18, but the age of consent in Georgia is 16. If I remember the story correctly, he met some girl in Georgia (or another state, details are murky) and venmo'ed her for the hotel room.

Which the feds said meant he crossed state lines to have sex with a minor. Because she wasn't legal in FL, but was in GA. Or whatever.

I don't know. On the one hand -- I could see it. On the other hand -- it's the DOJ. I could also see them fabricating the whole thing.

On the other other hand, I think it came out that some con artist was using that venmo payment to a young lady to try to extort Gaetz.

544 I think both picks are excellent.

I ...like Tulsi. She says things few Dems have said and is open to changing her mind about stuff.

For DoD you need a fighter. I think someone with two Bronze stars will command respect from the rank and file. That is important. I also like what he's saying, about the military having ONE mission - defend the United States of America. That's it. Anything that contributes to that goal = good. Everything that detracts from that goal has to go. Every minute a soldier spends in DEI training is a minute they didn't spend honing combat skills. Every dollar spent on that crap is a dollar not spent on bullets and training.

If we make our military the most lethal and competent fighting force on the planet, then we never have to fight any wars at all. People should take one look at the U.S. military and say...no thanks.

Gaetz should invite Murkowski onto his podcast to defend her position.

The DOJ and FBI tried to frame Matt Gaetz in one of the worst ways possible for a man. Imagine what he would do to hold these awful, corrupt people to account.

The FBI and DOJ previously tried to frame Matt Gaetz with the help of a con artist who was trying to extort Gaetz’s family out of tens of millions of dollars. I can’t think of a more perfect choice to tear the most corrupt agency on earth down to the studs. Bravo, President Trump.

700 There are two types of bronze stars. The bare bronze star can be awarded to a clerk for inventing an office procedure that speeds up processing. (When I was in Vietnam one of our clerks got one for just that). The second type of bronze star has a "V" device pin on it. That "V" stands for "Valor", and is only awarded for heroic behavior in combat. One of my friends in Vietnam had one of those. It is a much bigger award than a plain Bronze Star.

My Pop received two in the European Theater. One with the "V", one without. The one without was for his platoon physically hauling jerrycans for 48 hours to supply vehicles. He said it was not fun.

710 I think Rubio is the most problematic choice among what we have seen so far. But Rubio is not a potential rival so that Lincolnian reference doesn't hold water. Still with a strong team, Rubio can be boxed in and should he go full RINO, he can be fired. Plus, DeSantis has a chance to elevate a more conservative person to the Senate. I think Rubio will be among the first to leave Trumps cabinet. He simply thinks too highly of himself.

State is tied strongly to the President's own policies if the President isn't a corpse. And there might even be reason for a youngish neocon to tack away from the deep state neocons as their Ukraine fiasco is blowing up in their face.

718 I don't know who or what EFG is but he or they (are they trans) is wrong. I was an infantryman and a major who is a battalion commander can have as many as 1,000 troops under his command. I have listened to Pete Hegseth and believe he will make a competent and possibly a great SecDef. I have no doubt he will return our military to its wartime job: killing and breaking things. MAGA!

721 A good major is better than a mediocre general officer. (Ask me how I know.) In any rate, command over 50+ men and women almost all under 30 can be a nightmare. He just has to lead a few generals and admirals and they lead the rest.

722 Re: Tulsi.

At first I had the same thoughts. She's a peacenik, using her experience as a managine nurse in a combat zone, a combat zone I admit, as a foundation of her national security cred. I still don't buy that. I also don't buy her managerial skills, though she could grow into it, she is a smart chick, but what changed my mind was thinking. . "What CAN she bring to the management of National Intelligence?" Well, little to nothing in terms of coordinating a complex op that will defeat our standing enemy made up of. . . . .everyone? Well, no one is qualified for that no matter how many times Jack Posobiec applied for the job.

No, I came around because She's in charge of ALL Intelligence agencies, and virtually impossible to not be confirmed, AND more than anything else, despite my lack of being impressed on her service, or her stature or her history or education, I change my mind and 100% Support her for 1 reason, in 2 notes.

Trump seems determined to "drain the swamp" and his appointments seem to be borderline rabid supporters of the ACTUAL constitution, who want to burn down the "career" bureaucracy who have trodden on every American based on a whim.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 14, 2024 05:34 AM (XKj0h)

723 And though she has no "intelligence" experience, in it's execution, she doesn't need it. She's not there to manage actual intelligence gathering for the purposes of national security, and I think anyone can read a brief and be like "supporting LGBT in Iran to subvert the new califate? Yeah, no going." I think everyone knows that's stupid, so she's fine for being a stop gap against that stuff.

But most Important, and what I think made him pick her has nothing to do with intelligence gathering for us to have an upper hand against our enemies, but rather.. . . . .

She is the highest profile person to be on EVERY SINGLE list by the Intelligence agency's as a Threat to America. One of them, A mistake. . .same mistake for months, and still not recinded? 3! agencies, all together at the same time saying that she's a risk to FUCKING FLY!?

Tulsi might be a war squish, but I know women, and no woman takes a personal slight lightly.

I bet she will identify and punish every person who targeted her, and every other person unjustly.

So as a clean the swamp pick? I'm all for it.
