Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Portability

When Barack Obama delivered the White House to the most radical faction of the Democrat Party and then his people took over the major institutions, many assumed that he had remade the Party, cemented it firmly and installed it permanently. The first is true, the jury is out on the third and the second is increasingly in doubt. He remade the Party, certainly, and remade it in his own image (or his shot-callers' images - the difference is perhaps irrelevant). The pre-2008 Democrat Party no longer exists, and hasn't for some time.

But that remaking - despite how deeply its product has infested the entire administrative state, the corporate world and the media complex - may be its undoing. Obama's Party takeover on the back of identity politics of all kinds is a hard thing to keep together, and its fractures have been showing for a while now. Outside of the strongholds, the Party is finding itself to be a tough sell. Obama remade the Party, but that remaking was not portable. Without Obama at the top, it doesn't have the juice. None of his successors could do it.

Part of the reason for his lack of portability is the nature of his coalition. Obama built a coalition of hatred. The various sub-groups all hate each other along with the designated enemy, and have no common purpose and often have little intra-group commonality. Trump's remaking of the Republican Party has been - to borrow a phrase - a "coalition of the willing" and that makes it distinctly different. One thing that I think will help with portability is that Trump's coalition isn't built on mutual and universal hatred, which has the potential to make it more coherent and robust.

That basic and important difference may not be enough, which is why I am pleased to see the focus from the "New Conservatism" on the future. Yes, we won in 2024. We won in 2016. We probably won in 2020. I think it is safe to say that Trump has remade the Republican Party in terms of its base, the expectations of that base, and the demanded policy positions and actions. The Party itself still hates him, you, me and everyone outside the Beltway's "good 'ole boys" network, but he remade it regardless and his coattails prove it.

But that remaking must survive Trump and those coattails must be be transferable. He is walking into office a lame duck and the mantle will be passed in just four years. The ground-level infrastructure that helped deliver 2024 needs to be expanded and refined, not left to languish because "we won." I like what I'm hearing along these lines from people like Charlie Kirk and Scott Presler.

Trump's picks will also be vital to the portability of his remaking. Getting good people in place to build track records and learn how to cut through the Gordian Knot that is Washington D.C. will be helpful for the administration and provide a proving ground for the future. I think Vance was a very good pick, in part because of his age and also because of his ability to handle the press and deliver the message. If he holds up, he and hopefully other picks will strengthen the new GOP for the next round.

The new GOP must hold its acquisitions and keep expanding and building for the future. Strengthen the new institutions. Give no quarter whatsoever to dissemblers in the executive ranks. Appoint people who could take over when the time comes. Do everything possible to put the GOPe into a corner and force it out.

And, most vitally, keep winning and keep delivering. Nothing succeeds like success.

21 The only way this shit lasts is the red states institute laws preventing the overwhelming electoral cheat the left has been allowed to do, then the feds come in to the blue states and investigate then prosecute all involved in the cheat in THOSE states.

I have a feeling a LOT of the remaining blue states would turn red, were that ever to actually happen.

It needs to be fixed and never allowed to happen again.

25 Arguably the most important part of cementing the win now is changing the flow of money.

For the last 30 years the primary point of Fedgov has been to take money from generally conservative taxpayers and give it to generally leftwing bureaucrats, activists, and connected oligarchs.

Occasionally Republicans have talked about stopping this - though they've never actually DONE anything about it.

One of Trump's goals has to be to not only stop this but reverse it. The left has the votes of the FSA (or at least tacit permission to vote on their behalf) because they get paid. Let's reverse that. I want to see MASSIVE tax increases on blue locations with tax reductions AND funding for explicitly right wing organizations.

I checked back a few days later and every one of those remaining 5% of the votes were for Harris. And remember this was basically a 50-50 town this time around but somehow all the late ballots went for Harris...

=======

The SALT reduction was a major hit that I don't think the world has come to appreciate yet.

Trump did try to stop sue and settle which, if the bureaucracy stopped under him, Biden just reupped immediately afterwards.

I'm a broken record on this: but Loper, aggressive application of Loper dismantling the administrative state back to the levels of the 80s, would do remarkable things to change the makeup of American politics. So much financing of NGOs through government grants is probably completely unhinged from statute.

Combine that with a return to a budgetary process (this time the GOP not completely tanking the process because they object to $5 billion for the border wall).

I never got the big roles like that in major college productions; I was more that reliable character actor you called on for a steady performance. I played the priest (as a *young* man!) in The Rose Tattoo. My favorite role was the acolyte, "Monk," of a street prophet who was positive the world would end on a certain date, in a graduate seminar production called "Gof!" "Gof" being the name of the Prophet's god. He prophesied that the world would be turned into a giant pimple at midnight. Well, out went the lights, and then you heard my uncertain voice: "Prophet? Is this what the inside of a pimple looks like?"

72 Combine that with a return to a budgetary process (this time the GOP not completely tanking the process because they object to $5 billion for the border wall).

That's all fine but not good enough TBH.

Tax and spending policy need to be considered primarily as a weapon at this point.

And there are easy introductions into this kind of thinking. For example if Trump puts draconian tariffs on foreign solar panels - the people that will be hurt are generally coastal financial elites and the people helped will generally be middle class Americans with factory and/or engineering experience.

So yes this is an obvious win because it brings jobs home and makes the costs of "green energy" more immediate. But *more* importantly you'll be taking money from generally leftists and giving it to generally conservatives.

74 I'm a broken record on this: but Loper, aggressive application of Loper dismantling the administrative state back to the levels of the 80s, would do remarkable things to change the makeup of American politics. So much financing of NGOs through government grants is probably completely unhinged from statute.

Combine that with a return to a budgetary process (this time the GOP not completely tanking the process because they object to $5 billion for the border wall).

In my book, Obama is the worst president in my lifetime. On Election Day 2008, America lived up to its promise to heal the pain from the Civil War. His campaign implicitly ran on that premise. He squandered all the positive racial unity for pure partisan advantage, knowing that the Dem party had nothing else to run on if that were taken away. He set race relations in our country back 60 years. I never tour I would live in a country where whiteness was demonized in such a mainstream fashion. As a black man, I weep for the opportunity lost, and that is on Obama's head. Biden and Carter are distant placeholders in the Worst President Sweepstakes by comparison.

142 Obama built a coalition of hatred. The various sub-groups all hate each other along with the designated enemy, and have no common purpose and often have little intra-group commonality.
_______
That's true only up to a point. There are big cracks in the coalition, including both philosophical and practical ones. They're not a problem just now, because it's early. But just as it was obvious decades ago that feminists and Islamists are not compatible, in the long term the social conservatives and classical liberals are not, either.

And there are troubles even with the language, to my mind indicating a future left-like schism. Look at the way "middle class" and "working class" are conflated. That is not a lasting alliance. Or just the term "classical liberal". It now usually means Humphrey or Moynihan; it used to refer to John Stuart Mill - libertarians who aren't yet completely stoned. (Though Patrick Dineen points out that Mill is the thinker Marcuse most often cites.)

157 Trump needs to hire someone who gets the sobriquet "The Destroyer". This person gets assigned to an agency to close it down quickly and completely. Once the first one is done, they move to another one.

Actually, he needs four or five of these people. EPA, DOJ-Hate Crimes, NASA, and I'm sure there are a lot of others. One or two would need to pass the Senate, to close down cabinet-level positions, such as Education and HHS.

166 n our local Christmastime radio-on-stage adaptations of It's a Wonderful Life, I played "Uncle Billy" (he who loses the $8000), and doubled as "Sam," the entrepreneur who wants George to come into business with him. We had a good cast each year. Since the same guy cast himself as George every year (though he was very good), and nobody else had a chance to audition for it, I gave up on the production after two years.

Our "Clarence" was an English fellow. Rather neat it was to hear the lines in his Yorkshire-with-American-icing accent.

In my senior year we had a CYO contest one-act, "Hope Is the Thing With Feathers," where I played an elderly hobo among a group of down-and-out guys like Steinbeck's "Mack and the boys" in Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. As I recall the groups' goal was to capture a duck for some reason, and my character was the guy with the plan for doing it. A serio-comic play, not a comedy.

231 The dodge is that the votes were “received” before the end of Election Day.

Nope - in Washington, Oregon, and other states, votes that are merely postmarked by Election Day count.

(The D's in Nevada tried to count votes that weren't even postmarked.)

I believe that Oregon allows ballots received ten days after Election Day to be counted, so long as they were postmarked by Election Day.

233 I think Vance was a very good pick, in part because of his age and also because of his ability to handle the press and deliver the message. If he holds up, he and hopefully other picks will strengthen the new GOP for the next round.

--------------

My understanding is that the VP -- as the President of the Senate -- can preside over Senate sessions and thus, instead of a Treasonous Majority Leader like a McConnell or a Thune, can choose whom to recognize for proposed legislation & debate (and which Traitors to ignore).

I've heard that Trump considered doing this in his first term, but of course that rat-bastard Pence wouldn't cooperate.

Let's have JD Vance run the Senate daily when they're in session -- and have frequent recesses so that Trump can make recess appointments. MOAR BOSS MOVES!

236 John Stuart Mill - libertarians who aren't yet completely stoned. (Though Patrick Dineen points out that Mill is the thinker Marcuse most often cites.)
Posted by: Eeyore
=======
I am not a particular admirer of JS Mill. His principles were of a hothouse flower type and addressed the concerns of what in his day were the progressives--maximize their autonomy and screw the rest of society.

He did that by extending more balanced works like Adam Smith, Beccara, or Blackstone, far beyond what those authors intended and wrote in a milieu where UK had an empire spanning the globe.

JS Mill's arguments like David Ricardo and Mill's more direct line of argument derived from Hume and Bentham were more directed at uprooting their perceived roots of localism and social structures that hindered the investor class and the upper middle class.

They actually had little to say about actual improvement in mass living conditions (except cheaper food via abolishment of the Corn Laws) and the UK's internal society. It was a philosophy fit for an Empire.

The Wesley brothers had far more and better direct impact on the UK than the bien pensants of their age like JS Mill.

It is actually the constitutional option. Only leaders in the House and Senate specified by the Constitution are the Speaker of the House and the Vice President of the US who is also President of the Senate. The rules of either house flow downhill from those particular offices.

In many states, the Lt. Gov fulfills the original role of the VP in the US Constitution by running state Senates (sometimes that is affected somewhat by party control).

Or just the term "classical liberal". It now usually means Humphrey or Moynihan; it used to refer to John Stuart Mill - libertarians who aren't yet completely stoned. (Though Patrick Dineen points out that Mill is the thinker Marcuse most often cites.)

Posted by: Eeyore at November 13, 2024 11:24 AM (1bNHn)

The ideas and tendencies within classical liberalism were not new(nor even particular to Europe), so there is little reason to believe they had a particular incompatibility with social conservatism(by which we presumably mean Christian rather than pagan values) anymore than they had in the past.

It is more commonly the case that a society regulates matters pertaining to sexuality, family, and property, than it is not, since these are the things that people fight over. The choice of rules and means of regulation can be quite varied across countries with differing degrees of centralization.

Without it, we gat another blue president and everything he works on the next four years will be dismantled.

It reminds me of Akenaten, how he decided there was only one god, but the Egyptian culture, bureaucracy, and religious class all revolved around their pantheon of gods. He literally moved the capital away from that morass to be able to establish his own politics, religion, culture. But that culture died with him. They were quick to get his son king tut back to the old gods and back to the old capitol city. Trump cannot allow that to happen. His vision cannot die in the desert in 4 years.

Vance is a great person to pass the baton to, as are others. Kirk and Pressler and others . Elon already has his eyes moving forward to 2026, and is trying to get the voter registrations to continue so we are in good shape. Lots to do!

297 So there are four years now until the next national election. Do you think that is enough time to plan to get absentee ballots in the correct numbers to our Armed Forces who need them? Is it enough time for states to get their shit together whereas it doesn't take days, weeks, etc. to report election outcomes? How about keeping state voter rolls scrubbed and clean? 310 The delightful and intelligent Mrs naturalfake and I were talking about this very thing yesterday.

One thing she commented on was the fact that so many of his picks are relatively young. The way she described it is that "Trump has many children to carry on his legacy after he leaves office."

This is exactly right. Trump in his wisdom has provided for heirs to carry his legacy into the future in many different areas.

Unlike Obama who was all about Obama as The One and stuffed his cabinet and other positions with fawning leftard mediocrities and hacks and provided for no follow up as demonstrated by the incredibly lame bench of Dim presidential wannabes.

Should Trump be successful. The future looks very bright and...,intelligent.

JS Mill was an important critic of the society he lived in (ironically Marx was a decent social critic of the 1840's era Dickensian UK) but founding a society on the basis of utilitarianism and rationalism which Mill promoted is utopianism just as Marx's dream was.

But, both men downplay, if not ignore, the power of love, religion, and societal needs for bonds such as friendship, kinship, localism, etc.

To them, individuals were widgets that want (or should want) the same things, which is ultimately where rationalism breaks down.

I actually dated a girl once who shaved her head. It was odd and unusual, but also kinda hot. She looked like a younger version of the bald babe in Star Trek.

384 Bill Ackman @BillAckman 13h
The business community is giddy with excitement about the @realDonaldTrump administration. I am hearing this from everyone, including from people who didn’t vote for Trump.

Business confidence is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Business leaders are becoming more confident about the country and the economy. This means they will be making more investments in our future which will drive the economy and the stock market, reducing the cost of capital and bolstering confidence further, catalyzing more investment and more growth in a self-reinforcing, virtuous cycle.

Merger and acquisition activity is about to explode as there are an enormous number of deals that have been deferred pending a more favorable regulatory environment for transactions. M&A will drive efficiency, greater profitability and growth. It will also enable the return of capital to investors who will seek to redeploy their profits and proceeds in new investment opportunities.

The DOGE and deregulation will drive government efficiency and make America a vastly better and lower-risk place to do business efficiently and effectively.

I am also hearing about non-US companies that are desperate to immediately create a presence on U.S. soil. They are frightened to be locked out of the most important economy in the world. They will build factories and make new investments here to avoid the risk of tariffs and because they don’t have a better place to invest capital.

China’s economy is in trouble. Europe’s is a mess. The U.S. has now become by far the best country for investment.

Growth is about to explode.

In some ways yes, in other ways no. Megacorp has realized that Trump was right about China and no longer have dreams of being able to run China as a giant sweatshop. Xi's increasingly nationalistic stomping on MNCs and their peeps along with China turning insular again have killed the dream of a mass Chinese market for Western companies. This and the middle income trap regarding worker salaries in China are causing MNC to move operations in a lot of cases to other nations such as Vietnam or India.

In the US itself, revitalizing cheap energy via fracking, nat gas, etc. can speed the onshoring of industries along with selective tariffs. Cheap oil and gas also ends a lot of Russian, Iranian, and Venezuelan adventurism. Puts money back in the pocket of the US workers as well.

Now that liberal women have made the MAGTA movement go viral, I would not dare touch any tea Jill Biden might hand me!! Glad she's staying away.

"The "Make Aqua Tofana Great Again," or MATGA, movement is a recent online trend in which some women humorously advocate for "reviving" Aqua Tofana--a 17th-century poison used by women to kill and escape their abusive husbands. Aqua Tofana, named after its alleged creator Giulia Tofana, was a deadly, undetectable poison used across Italy, gaining notoriety for its stealth and potency.

In a video posted on Grabien, women embracing the trend appear with captions such as: "Sure, my body, your choice," before pouring unknown liquids into drinks. This is juxtaposed with medieval images of women pouring potions, while the captions tell the story of Tofana who was "responsible for the deaths of over 600 abusive husbands in 17th-century Italy.""

451 The party either lives or dies with Trump, not his words, his actual administration.

As a man who sat at the polls all during voting and talked with literally 100s of voters that I didn't know that approached me to say what they had to say, the general theme was this "if we don't win this one, the country is gone."

They don't expect new, unique ideas and platforms. They expect the fundamental basics of a government to be carried out, border security, sound monetary policy, removing degeneracy from the schools and workplace.

It's true, many love Trump. But more than that, I saw the same sort of reaction as I did with Bud Light. People didn't love Miller Lite and were persuaded by its promises, they just switched because they are revulsed by Bud Light.

If Trump just winds up, in action, leaving borders open, spending like a drunken sailer, and being all talk and bluster, there will be no carry-on for the party.

496 Majority and minority leaders are a historical latecomer and due in part to the reducing the filibuster requirement after WWI in the Senate.

With the basic end of unlimited debate in the Senate, management of the Senate floor for legislation, etc. became an issue and while the forms of the older order (such as the unanimous consent boiler plate exist), the newer party leadership part is tacked on.

An individual senator willing to gum up the works could do so by simply objecting to unanimous consent motions or using the various privileged motions such as a motion to recess. The fact that none do so indicates that the Senate has become a clone of the House where leadership runs the show.

Sorry, heard it from from a guest (some economic analyst) ) on Brian Kilmead's radio show this morning -- but I don't recall his name.

[Am driving for work so haven't had a chance to research & confirm it for myself yet -- but it struck me as likely true. And it would be nice to have a source to which we can point if indeed true.]

Sweet Cleansing Fire needs to be applied. And we need people who are able to take on our local Pravda every single time they try to say how fascistracistsexist we are as a nation under OrangeHitler.

OrangeManBad needs to have the Deguello blasting from the White House PA system during business hours. Give the WH a proper multicultural air.

Is there any significance between Thune and Cornyn?
They should have brought some muscle for Scott.
Typically, they give in easily.

509 It is very easy to primary him if he steps out of line. Running a primary challenge in Texas is way too costly to be effective.
