90 The MET
Title: Portrait of a Woman with a Lapdog

Artist: Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo di Mariano) (Italian, Monticelli 1503–1572 Florence)

Date: ca. 1532–33

Medium: Oil on panel

Dimensions: 35 3/8 × 27 3/4 × 1 in. (89.8 × 70.5 × 2.6 cm)

Classification: Paintings

NOT ON VIEW

Posted by: Xipe Totec at November 13, 2024 09:42 AM (pohLc)

92 I like the color and detail (especially in the clothing and accoutrements) Bronzino achieves in his paintings. At first I found the woman's expression somewhat stiff. But looking longer it seemed more still and introspective. The skin tones of his subjects may be a bit idealized but they aren't unnaturally so. This is one of those paintings that seem to improve the longer you look at it.

And the dog is cute as could be. I can't be the only one going "Awww!"

Shakespeare knew how to take a good urban legend (in this case, one fostered by Sir Thomas More) and run with it. It's a lot more likely, I understand, that Henry VII (the more famous Big Guy's father) did away with them to strengthen his own claim to the English throne.

122 Painting had to have been done after cochineal dye reached Europe because that color red would have been impossible before it.Posted by: sniffybigtoe

I'm back from the rabbit hole you just sent me down. This painting was done about 1532 to 1533. Cortez conquered Mexico between 1519 to about 1522. Of course this is where cochineal dye had produced for years. So yes it's very possible the dress in this picture was dyed with cochineal and would have made it the latest fashion and most likely cost a small fortune.

>Maniera at the Stadel Museum, 2016.
An excellent article. If interested in this painting, scan down to Mise-En-Scene.

In part, "The young lady casually directs her gaze directly at the viewer. Nevertheless no real sense of closeness comes about."

And, "Like its mistress, the lapdog also looks the viewer directly in the eye. Dogs are traditional symbols of loyalty, docility and domesticity in women."

Also, "The sinister visage alludes to the brutish side of the human being that lies concealed behind the facade of the social rules and norms."

Wouldn't hang this particular piece but it's an interesting art lesson. Thanks.

"This Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in the mid 70s, featuring 2 members who were previously in a band called Abernathy Shagnaster. When guitarist and vocalist Rik Emmett joined the band, they changed their name and would go on to release 10 studio albums before disbanding in the early 90s."

Nevermind.

Trump’s actual pick for CIA Director, John Ratcliffe, is as entrenched in the surveillance state as they come.

Over the past year, Ratcliffe joined forces with Mike Pompeo to push for the renewal of FISA warrantless surveillance, a tool that allows the government to spy on American citizens without due process.

Ratcliffe’s classified briefings reportedly played a key role in convincing Speaker Mike Johnson to reverse his prior opposition and throw his support behind FISA.

Ratcliffe’s roots in the surveillance swamp run deep. Appointed by George W. Bush as “Chief of Anti-Terrorism and National Security” for the Eastern District of Texas, he cut his teeth during the Bush administration’s post-9/11 assault on privacy rights.

Later, he co-founded a “strategic advisory” firm with John Ashcroft, Bush’s first Attorney General and an architect of the Patriot Act, a law that opened the door to unprecedented government spying on its own citizens.

Ratcliffe’s career seems to be defined by allegiance to the surveillance state, not resistance to it.

This isn’t an outsider or a reformer—this is someone deeply embedded in the national security...

364 I think what I said last night about Ron Paul is true for many of us:

Ron Paul never learned "perfect is the enemy of good."

He has the opportunity, if he wants, to work in the executive branch to cut down, drastically, the size and scope of the federal workforce. Enjoy that, Ron. You're not going to get everything you want, but you're getting more than anyone ever thought you would.

It's true for all of us. Trump is setting up the most transformatively small government administration since Coolidge. We're not going to get everything. Ratcliffe is very much in bed with the CIA. Okay. I wish it wasn't like that.

We're not going to get everything.

We’ve just been through a period where we, appropriately in my estimation, savaged Doug Emhoff for his nanny escapades. Pete was doinking his producer at Fox and got her pregnant, all while his wife was at home. I don’t expect that should get treated any differently, nor should it, and blaming it on his service tours is no excuse.

Yes, he f'ed up. If I was his 2nd wife, I'd never vote to confirm him. But, like Trump, who also struggled with fidelity and marriage, it seems high T/power/money ends up in sh&tbag behavior...some repent from that (like Trump) and should be supported in higher offices, some don't...

Every one of us makes mistakes. Fair or not, they become fodder during the political process. Trump was able to overcome them first because a lot of people understand divorce and his were the garden variety. I think the kind of behavior Pete displayed, multiple times, shows at a minimum a substantial error in judgment and personal discipline. Second and more importantly, Trump is an accomplished person who has successfully run large companies and dealt with complex matters. He understands how things work at that level and how to change or fix them. Pete has zero real world experience outside his military service and as a tv host. In my opinion that’s not someone who can get the things done that must be accomplished at DoD to reform it. I wonder if he even knows where to start. Nonetheless I like the idea he is outside the process and was never in the contracting world. That could cause him to ask a lot of questions. But changing things takes a certain level of knowledge and there isn’t time for a learning curve. I feel like he’s in way over his head and destined for failure. But that’s just me. I truly hope he succeeds
