Is This Something?

Probably not, but let's try anyway.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 was a damp squib at the box office, so the final part of the story, and the Tom Cruise era of the franchise, has been renamed "The Final Reckoning."

Haley Atwell and the girls are back. Maybe Vanessa Kirby is too. There's a blonde woman in the mix.

I didn't hear anything about this -- The Return, about Odysseus' return to Greece after his ten year odyssey. A group of suitors is pressuring his wife to declare him dead and marry one of them, making them king.

He comes back to kill them all. I don't buy Ralph Fiennes as a bad ass warrior but I guess they're showing him as emaciated to suggest he was starving at sea for a while.

Is that something? I dunno. I just watched Troy. I dug Sean Bean as Odysseus.

Against all reason, the ".... Has Fallen" franchise is still going.

I wouldn't link anything by that deranged hack Steven King, but there aren't many trailer (apart from Marvel and Star Wars trash) so...

The promotional campaign for Wicked is going GREAT:

Mattel may be safe from the Wicked Witch of the West, but it has had to issue a mea culpa to avoid the wrath of angry parents.

The toy company said the web address for a pornography company was mistakenly printed on the packaging for dolls tied to the new film "Wicked" instead of the official website for the coming Universal Pictures release.

Social-media users pointed out the mistake, noting that the URL directs to an adult-content website. The film's website is wickedmovie.com. The URL on the box omits the word "movie."

Wicked.com is a porn site, I gather. I wouldn't know.

"We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this," Mattel said, adding that the misprint affected dolls primarily sold in the U.S. "Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children."

The company didn't disclose how many toys were affected or if it was recalling any products. Mattel said customers who purchased the toys should discard the packaging or obscure the web address.

As of Sunday, the dolls were being sold by Amazon, Target and other retailers. On Monday morning, a Target link to the dolls said, "We're sorry, but the item you're looking for is not available at Target." A similar link on Amazon said the product was "currently unavailable."

Has anyone brought up the main reason? That with Trump in charge and Elon looking to cut, all the laundered taxpayer dollars on "media campaigns" to liberal networks are now zeroed out and the gravy train is ending. No more Covid vax campaigns. No more healthcare.gov campaigns. Heck, possibly no more Military sign up campaigns (at least not with that media). And the list goes on and on.

"Heretic" is quite good.

"Saturday Night", which my kid wanted to see, was quite entertaining. It's hyper-condensed: Real stories compressed into a real-time 110 minute movie.

44 When Odysseus returned from his wanderings he disguised himself as an old bum to get the scope on the old suitors. He then arranged a contest that the one that could string Odysseus' bow could marry the wife Penelope (she put them off by weaving her wedding garb first, then unwove it all at night).

The climax was after a few suitors had failed, the old beggar came in to try, the suitors laughingly let the old guy try, and he did, and used the arrows to shoot the whole set.

I recall reading about such stories being written for fanzines in the period between the end of the TV show and the appearance of the first movie, and the 'zines were given even more circulation at ST conventions. So, closer to 50 years of this stuff.

I'd never heard of Solo/Illya stuff until about 10 years ago -- but I'll bet it's been going on quite a while too.

Think of the early scenes explaining the situation. Essentially, any scene involving the Entity.

There's a dourness to the explanations that doesn't mesh well with the amount of exposition.

Instead of explaining things in a spring with a smirk, it's explaining things with a frown while seated. It's not the whole movie, but chunks of it.

And the treatment of world-ending events feels heavier than in Fallout where treatment of world-ending events could be handled with little jokes about which wire to cut at the end. It's a fairly subtle tonal thing, but I think it prevents the movie from being as fun as its predecessors and might be a reason why it wasn't as fully embraced as Fallout.

Something that should be totally achievable (notwithstanding politicians bought off by Big Pharma) is getting drug commercials off tv. That was a great part of the Rogan-Vance interview when Rogan makes the point that it's not to really sell the drug for some random disease like WetAMD that will give you a deadly bacterial infection on your taint ... it's to bribe the media into never investigating why a company is selling a drug that will give you a deadly bacterial infection on your taint.

99 It wasn't really a damp squib. It made less than Fallout, but the main problem wasn't the gross, it's that they went INSANE with the budget because 'muh covid' idiocy.

Fallout had a budget of ~$175 million, and it made $791 million worldwide, a respectable return.

Dead Reckoning made less, at $570 worldwide, but the problem is they spent ~300 million making it, nearly TWICE what Fallout cost.

That's the issue. If they'd stuck at ~$175 million budget, Dead Reckoning would have still made money.

That's the problem Disney has as well, where they seem incapable of making anything for less than $300 million.

When you spend that much on a movie, you HAVE to make a billion for it to be successful.

Hollywood has to re-learn to control their budgets to the expectations of the movie and the franchise.

103 No, I can see Ralph Fiennes as Odysseus. The Greek warrior heroes were not body-builders; their muscles would have been lean, from doing actual work, wielding a sword, rowing, etc. And as for him not being young, like Kirk Douglas in the Italian flick of decades ago: Remember, O. was gone to the Trojan War for ten years, and then it took him ten years more to get back home to Ithaca. And he was no boy when he left for Troy. He'd be at least forty-five, maybe fifty years old.

(And now that I've mentioned it, probably some goofball will...)

Wolfus, you'll hate to hear this, but in actual film classes, they teach that there is gay subtext in westerns. Two guys talking about handing their guns is just subtext for Brokeback stuff. There WAS gay subtext in Ben Hur, but that's because screenwriter Gore Vidal was gay and put it in to spite Heston, who didn't know.

Anyone who wants to read gay subtext into LoTR can, it's a free country, but that was nonexistent Tolkien's mind. Frodo and Sam replicated his relationship of a military officer and batman in WW1. It was a crucial, sacred role. But modern kids are insulated from this and can only let their minds see it one way.

I WILL say this, though. If you genderswapped the Trek movies 2-4, and made Spock female, it would be the greatest sci-fi love story of all time. If.

I remember a 'mainstream' Trek story planet where Kirk was turned female and Spock got the equivalent of XYY for Vulcans.

And of course the classic final Trek episode in the Old Series where crazy Janice Lester brain swaps with Kirk. I love the acting in that one, the girl does a great Shatner impression and Shatner has no problem doing a psychotic woman.

The Judy Garland one is one of those movies that was restored in part with stills composing certain scenes because the audio exists but the film was lost.

One of my fave movies. I like the way they adapted the story to make it current, and also use Judy’s epic voice.
The Barbra Streisand version was dreadful. No chemistry between her and KK.
Same for the latest one with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

169 Wicked is trying REALLY hard to be the next Barbie movie as far as box office. They've had a few hiccups (Ariana stealing a costar from his wife and newborn baby, Cynthia accusing fans of racism, the whole porn site on a toy box debacle.)

I think it will still do well, despite the hiccups. Never underestimate the power of a now grown female fanbase that adores this music and has pretended to sing it on broadway for over 20 years! And expect if you see it in theaters, to have grown women singing along to the music. I don't like the musical, I could never get over the clear anti-Bush strain in it, and I thought the book was superior. So I feel like I'm in this weird position as a musical theater lover where every woman my age is OBSESSED with it and I'm so meh.

I still think they should have found a way to film this where they got Idina and Kristen to be the leads. Despite the age gap. Ariana and Cynthia are the Wish version of Idina and Kristen. That's not cruel, it's just fact.

171 I had an Epson Eco-tank printer that takes bottled ink rather than cartridges. It quit printing color pictures then it quit doing black and white. I bought a newer model and reading the instructions carefully I found out why the first one quit. If the ink bottles have been partially used - you can't keep them to finish them off. Exposure to air causes the ink in the bottles to go bad and it clogs the printer up. Lesson learned.

An interesting thing about the Homeric story is the stories about how most of the heroes try to dodge the call to the Trojan war. Odysseus himself pretended to be crazy and was plowing salt into his fields until one of the dudes testing him put his infant son Telemachus in the path of the plow and he had to turn aside and stop and the jig was up. He then tricked Achilles out of his disguise as a girl by putting a sword in among the clothes he was showing them and Achilles grabbed it and waved it about.

177 Wolfus, you'll hate to hear this, but in actual film classes, they teach that there is gay subtext in westerns. Two guys talking about handing their guns is just subtext for Brokeback stuff. There WAS gay subtext in Ben Hur, but that's because screenwriter Gore Vidal was gay and put it in to spite Heston, who didn't know. . . .

I WILL say this, though. If you genderswapped the Trek movies 2-4, and made Spock female, it would be the greatest sci-fi love story of all time. If.
Posted by: LizLem at November 12, 2024 0

***
Good point. But the "subtext" was probably only something academics started discussing in the late Sixties, when it became possible to do so without being shamed or driven from polite society. There's a long novel from '64, Boys and Girls Together by William Goldman of Marathon Man fame, which contains a gay subplot; but it is not painted as some happy-go-lucky relationship, but as shameful and requiring secrecy.

Barbie has more appeal, and was a compact, short, non-musical comedy for all ages. Wicked is a 3 hour musical for part 1...as we saw with MI, no one likes to just see just part 1. I expect millennial white women to show in droves...and gay men. And who else?

Social-media users pointed out the mistake, noting that the URL directs to an adult-content website. The film's website is wickedmovie.com. The URL on the box omits the word "movie."

One of my favorite stories to share about my 4+ decade career in Print Advertising has to do with how a simple typo managed to insult an entire island. CompUSA had just expanded into Puerto Rico, and when our Christmas insert was delivered to the stores just ahead of the newspapers, the Manager of the San Juan location opened the box, got to the back page of the insert, and exploded. He called the CEO to basically demand that the entire Art department be fired. All because someone had typed "semama" instead of "semana" in the large corner bug. No one got fired, but we immediately hired a bilingual copy editor.

In this case, someone absolutely screwed the pooch, since everyplace I've worked at has a procedure in place to test all URLs or QR codes before Final Proof.

195 Okay, after ten years of fighting in Troy and another ten years of ridiculous detours on the way home, Odysseus would be rather old by the time he returns, so a seasoned actor like Feinnes would be appropriate, but are you really going to make a movie solely upon his return home? Most of the drama is irrelevant high school made up crap of Oddyseus. For so.e reason, deciding not to reveal himself upon his return, but, I guess arriving home and saying, "Hey, y'all, I'm back and taking my seat on the throne again," misses out a lot of subterfuge and mean girl snippyness.

"Red One" trailer starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans.

https://youtu.be/xBCGAt2AbS0

It's another Christmas action-comedy movie.
Is this a thing now?

God Almighty.

She received chemotherapy treatments over 7 - 8 years?

I assume it was periodic and not constant?

[Don't know anything about it, but assume they take breaks -- especially if the cancer is in remission.]

Varied from once every three weeks to, near the end, once a week w one week off. She did chemo for metastatic cancer for almost 12 years.
Posted by: jim (in hospital in Kalifornia) at November 12, 2024 05:42 PM (SSBCb)

Many cancers don't have breaks. My genetic type and cancer doesn't once you start treatment (which I did). It's why you prioritize treatment that extends your quality of life first, since it's not like you have to worry about a cure that's not arriving...

It's why I see my cancer as AIDS vs cancer (which so many see as solid tumor) - same every day treatment, same immune compromise, etc...

I don't how or why they are making a 4th FALLEN movie, I do like Gerard Butler and his last movie escaping Iran or Iraq was really good.

I take that back with all the attempts on Trump a new Fallen movie might be realistic especially if IRAN is going after the President

Ferris Bueller didn't pull me out of Ladyhawke anywhere near as much ad Kirby did Flesh and Blood. He couldn't seem to lose thst New York accent, and a midget marauder didn't seem very likely.

Posted by: tankdemon at November 12, 2024 05:49 PM (K2HbW)

311 There is a Rutger Hauer flick called Flesh and Blood set in medieval times. The casting of Bruno Kirby as one of Hauer's associates makes my disbelief unsuspended.
Posted by: tankdemon at November 12, 2024 05:38 PM (K2HbW)

Maybe Bruno was related to the casting director?

I just saw him in a Columbo episode; he looked like a kid in it. So I just looked him up and learned: a) he died in 2006, I did not know this. And b) I recognize his dad but never knew his name.

312 267 Hey remember when there were so many good to great movies being released on a monthly schedule that it was nearly impossible to see them all first run?

Two movies or more, on average, get released every day. It's impossible to see the good ones. The problem with the great ones is just being able to ID which ones they are.

|| I don't want to see Jehovah's Witness missionary girls terrorized by some nutcase in "Heretic" although

Latter Day Saints.

And the terrorism is emotional. I expected much worse, or even just predictable averageness. It's a very good movie.

314 >>> 287 I saw "Best Christmas Pageant Ever" last weekend and recommend it. It does not mess with the plot and as someone above pointed out, they do not make the Herdmans conform to DEI. Just a wholesome film that can be enjoyed by the entire family. It is sweet without being sappy and conveys its message without being preachy. Jenkins knows how to tell a story. Posted by: sal at November 12, 2024 05:42 PM (f+FmA)

Nice.

Because it's the season, there is a play called "The Thanksgiving Play" that was written by a Native American woman. It's a satire about some woke, well meaning college kids trying to put together a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving play, and it goes off the rails as they double down on being sensitive. The playwright clearly is poking fun at the well meaning but silly white students. The theater where I saw it might be secretly based, because in the list of trigger warnings for the play, they put "woke." It was pretty funny, though didn't really cover new ground.

315 "London has Fallen" is one of my favorite action thrillers.

Great action from start to finish. The great Gerard Butler giving jihadis what for from beginning to end.

Highest recommendation!
