A powerful piece, painted in 1827. Yes, I'd certainly consider hanging it.
-- Let's Explore Art, WordPress, 2014/03/13 Powerful: Simpson’s “The Captive Slave” Elysia A few lines: "The man posing for the painting was not a slave. He was a Shakespearean actor. Had you been a fashionable Brit at the time, you might have recognized him from the theater. Aldridge would go on to become quite well known on the European stage, but here, in this bit of “acting” early in his career, he shows us a thoughtful, non-threatening, forlorn slave. I wonder if Simpson wanted to paint an actual slave, but couldn’t make it work." Thank you! Posted by: L - If they'll do it with you... at November 12, 2024 09:39 AM (NFX2v) 65

Soemthing about the orange jumpsuit says "state prison," not "slave." Though I suppose, when you're in the prison, the distinction is academic.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 12, 2024 09:45 AM (J2vNu) 91
I think Captive Slave refers to a slave that broke free and was recaptured. The double manacles probably mean that he did that before. Like in the movie Cool Hand Luke where a prisoner who had escaped was forced to wear chains to lesson the chances of his running again. Since slaves were considered economic property by their work, the second manacle wasn't there to restrict movement but as an identifying device which says "This was never a free man".

Former Wall Street money manager Ed Dowd:
"I have never seen such blatant manipulation of government statistics. There is government spending and government hiring to paper over what is truly a bad economy for the average man. When I was asked prior to the election who do you think will win the election, I said Trump has already won, according to the economic statistics. That’s why he won. Bobby Kennedy helped along with Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, lots of people switching and what have you. What really got Trump in was the economy, the real economy, not the stock market. It was not the ‘everything is hunky-dory’ pablum from the mainstream media. The real economy has been rolling over, and we are just waiting for the financial markets to figure this out. When they do, Trump is going to inherit a turd of a financial market crisis. Government statistics will be updated, and it will show we started a recession sometime this year... The incoming Trump Administration has to get out in front of the narrative. This was already baked into the cake. They just got handed fraudulent books. So, they are basically going to get blamed for what is coming. Posted by: SMOD at November 12, 2024 09:49 AM (RHGPo) 111

---------- "The medallions were likely distributed through the network of the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Wedgwood sent parcels of cameos to Thomas Clarkson as well as to Benjamin Franklin in the United States. Historians generally accept that Wedgwood himself financed the cost of production and distribution; cameos of a similar size were commercially sold for three guineas each (£3/-3, equivalent to £506 in 2023).[1][3]" https://tinyurl.com/53a7t8ey IMAGE; BTW, I think the 2023 price is wrong as it's probably based on 3/4 of an ounce's gold spot price for 2023 and not its real buying-power equivalent. The artist did a great job on this fellow. His hands are perfect. His expression seems tired as if he just can't take much more. But the set of his jaw says "you will not win because I will never break.". That chain is enormous, almost like something on a ship. I think it symbolizes the enormous burden born by the slave and the fear of the owner that he cannot truly control the slave. That chain can't protect the owner from the real judgement and punishment he faces. And both master and slave probably knew that. Oh, speaking of gubmint spending, is this a solemn portrait of an American taxpayer?
A near family has 2 foster black girls, kindergarten and 3rd grade, who are scheduled for hair extensions this week. Last month's salon braiding lasted 3 days, at a taxpayer expense of $70.00 *each,* $140.00 for 6 and and 8 year old KIDS hairdos, and both of them still wear diapers at night. How many hours does it take for (an average, any ethnic) JoeSixPack to earn $140.00, just to watch his county piss it away on hair? A truck driver neighbor, who lost his health insurance under obamacare, complained to Sen Amy Klobucher, whose staffer merely sniffed, "poor people have health insurance now..." And so do illegals. This is an excellent take, with a clear parallel to LoTR:
ANALYSIS: TRUE. It Wasn’t an Election. It Was an Intervention. Trump drove so many mad, from the Never Trumpers to the Woke Left, because they destroyed themselves trying to destroy him. Their biggest problem was that they were never fighting the real Trump. They were fighting one they invented, a supervillain whose mere presence could end democracy itself. It’s hard to imagine such smart people losing their critical thinking ability. Power will do that to you, though. No one gives it up willingly. But still, you’d think some of them might have had an inkling America was ready for change by now. https://is.gd/kLaoVP Posted by: Archimedes at November 12, 2024 10:23 AM (xCA6C) 215

That is where the whole czars of this and that came about--they act as the president's emissary to the agency staff itself but do not require Senate confirmation. England in Roman times drove on the right, so why do they drive on the left now? They had a time of civil war (the Anarchy 1138-1153) where you had to be able to defend yourself against attacks on the road. So you needed your sword arm (your right) presented to anyone you encounter on the road. So you travelled on the left. Japan had the Warring States period (roughly the 14th to 16th centuries). This only works on island nations since you still have foreigners coming in driving on the right on the mainland.

People freaking out about Trump's cabinet picks need to remember that Trump is not like any other President.
Other presidents pick people to think for them. Trump is a CEO and his cabinet members are junior executives. They report to him. They carry out his agenda. They offer advice and he may or may not take it. It's why he had so much turnover in his first term, because those old washington goons thought they could railroad him as a newbie. When he pushed back, many quit (others subverted him). The people around him will be a mix of non-political, former GOPe types who came around to MAGA, and old deepstaters who will either play ball or get out. BTW, State Department head has as much or as little power over foreign policy as the President in power wants them to have.
Goes back decades---Cordell Hull under FDR was ignored and treated like a mushroom--policy and diplomacy was ran out of the WH. Ditto for Nixon and Sec. Rogers--Kissinger as NSA ran Nixon's policy implementation over Vietnam and eventually combined the NSA and the Sec. of State role for Nixon and later Ford. Ike ignored John Foster Dulles as his red baiting Sec. of State and curbed his ass after the Hungary revolt in 1956. So watch for advisors inside the WH more than who is Secretary. AG, Treasury, and some of the agency heads like FBI, EPA, etc. matter more. Intl Trade Rep and Sec. of Commerce too due to using tariffs as economic policy implementation. Look for Trump to concentrate on two maybe three big things domestically--immigration, inflation, and trade/industry. Abroad, ending the wars without end which deemphasizes the DoD secretary, teh generals, and the whole Nat Sec. outer focus. That allows reform internally to be the concentration. Remember Trump trying to turn the 2020 riots against Biden? "This is what Biden's America looks like"? It wasn't what Biden's America would look like because while lawlessness in certain localities went up, there was no riot season for four years. That's because the riots were never genuine. yes. this. no residents in the district shift non-gov residential areas to newly named districts in MD and VA. actually all to MD bc fuck them they're stupider than VA Posted by: BlackOrchid Fedgov already ceded the Virginia portion of DC back to VA in the 1840's. Easy enough to do residential areas back to Maryland which means the DC Circuit is no longer needed and can be dispersed into other circuits (slight window of really old caselaw to 'fire' sitting judges (see Stuart v. Laird). That case involved the 1802 Judiciary Act rolling back the lame duck Federalist Congress's Judiciary Act of 1801 and its additional judges and ended Justices riding circuit to hear appeals in the sticks. Marbury was the other case involving the Judiciary Act of 1801 but not involving the constitutionality of the Judiciary Act of 1802. Posted by: whig at November 12, 2024 10:53 AM (ctrM5) 372

I like the layout gives a lot of negative space for him to fill up by looking in that direction. It's somber but supremely hopeful. 358 Noem is a very successful governor of South Dakota. They didn’t lock down during Covid. Their economy was doing well not sure how it is now with Bidens stranglehold on drilling. She has great administrative skills, and yes, her decision making in writing autobiographies is questionable. She has been a great champion of freedom , and has supported Trump since his first administration. The dog shooting and rumors of infidelity are noise in the big picture.
Posted by: Jen the original ====== Doesn't really matter about Noem so much as the average Dept. Secretary has a tenure of 2 years or less.
